14EWC Distinguished Alumni AwardsThis award honors former East-West Center participants for exceptional accomplishments in their professions andcontributions to East-West relations and understanding. The award was established by an endowment fund donatedby the late Dr. Dai-Ho Chun, former director of the Center's Institute of Technical Interchange. Two outstanding alumni will receive the 2012 EWCA Distinguished Alumni Award:Senen Bacani, FormerPhilippines Secretary ofAgriculture under PresidentCorazon Aquino, is currentlythe Chairman and President ofthe agri-business La Frutera, Inc.,one of the top banana exportersin the Philippines. Previously,Bacani, who pursued an MBAfrom the University of Hawai‘iwhile he was at the East-West Center from 1966-1968,had spent 20 years in a successful career with Dole FoodCompany, including serving as Dole’s country managerin Costa Rica and the Philippines. After leaving Aquino’sadministration, he spearheaded the establishment of thefirst large-scale banana plantation in the autonomousregion of Muslim Mindanao, helping to bring jobs andstability to the war-torn region in his belief that “peaceand development go together.” Employing more than1,800 people, roughly 90 percent of whom are Muslimsand 10 percent are Christians, Bacani and his businesspartners envisioned La Frutera as a model of how Christiansand Muslims can work together. In 2006 he was namedEntrepreneur of the Year by SGV Ernst & Young.Amanda Ellis, who pursued aPhD in Political Science whileshe was at EWC from 1986-1989,is currently New Zealand’sDeputy Secretary of ForeignAffairs and Trade in charge ofinternational development. Before returning to the ministry, where she had earlier been in theForeign Service at postings inParis, the Pacific and Asia, Ellis worked as the LeadSpecialist for Gender and Development for the WorldBank, where she played a vital role in economicallyempowering women in an impressive number of theworld’s developing countries. “It’s fascinating howthings I was involved with at the Center in my earlycareer, how these connections have been maintained andstrengthened to become a theme in my professional life,”remarked Ellis.East-West Center AssociationPresidential Recognition AwardThe newly established East-WestCenter Association PresidentialRecognition Award will be givenby outgoing EWCA PresidentRicardo Trimillos to tirelessvolunteer (and 1962-64 alumna)Itsuko Suzuki. Itsuko establishedthe Association’s MentoringProgram 10 years ago and hasbeen the key force behind theprogram’s success. In addition to her leadership of theMentoring Program, which has involved hundreds ofEWC students and professionals from the Honolulucommunity, she has served on the EWCA-Hawai‘iChapter Board for many years. Her dedication andcommitment to the EWC is an inspiration to otheralumni volunteers. Selected as one of two grantees outof 2,000 applicants from Japan, Itsuko, going againstcultural norms for Japanese women at that time, came tothe Center in 1962 from Tokyo as a graduate student inSocial Work, a field not offered at the graduate level inJapan in the ’60s. After receiving her degree, she workedfor the Japanese Red Cross and the International SocialService in Tokyo and eventually returned to Hawai‘iand served for 30 years as a medical social worker anddiagnostic clinic coordinator for the Hawai‘i StateDepartment of Health. Recognizing how fortunate shewas to receive the EWC Scholarship and how it shapedthe course of her life, she felt moved to give back to theEast-West Center community and share the benefits shehas received with the next generation of students.
