THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA<br />
Media efforts are critical to the success of any program to eliminate g<strong>ender</strong>b<strong>ased</strong><br />
violence. Media already provide a valuable functi<strong>on</strong> as watchdog, highlighting<br />
abuses, encouraging better policies and legislati<strong>on</strong>, and ensuring that<br />
governments follow through with their commitments. The Beijing Platform for<br />
Acti<strong>on</strong> also challenges media establishments to police themselves in an effort to<br />
eliminate g<strong>ender</strong>-b<strong>ased</strong> stereotypes and erase negative and debasing portrayals of<br />
women <strong>on</strong> televisi<strong>on</strong>, and in magazines, newspapers, and other mass media.<br />
The articles in this collecti<strong>on</strong> dem<strong>on</strong>strate that media have already entered the<br />
fight to end g<strong>ender</strong>-b<strong>ased</strong> violence. Their efforts include highlighting its prevalence,<br />
challenging attitudes, questi<strong>on</strong>ing traditi<strong>on</strong>al g<strong>ender</strong> roles, publicizing efforts to<br />
end the violence, and placing the problem squarely in the view of society.
