Murder, They Wrote<br />

Her sister was brutally murdered; the tabloids played up every gory detail. This is Pennie Azarc<strong>on</strong> Dela<br />

Cruz’s experience with how taboids treat violent crimes.<br />

On the evening of January 10, 1998,<br />

when I saw the bloodied sheets<br />

wrapped around the lifeless body of my<br />

sister, Ver<strong>on</strong>idia Azarc<strong>on</strong>-Lui, little did I<br />

know the cruelty she’d be subjected to by<br />

the tabloids.<br />

The news broke <strong>on</strong> January 12.<br />

Ver<strong>on</strong>idia had been knifed to death. Her<br />

killer was roaming free …<br />

As a mainstream journalist and an<br />

advocate of women’s issues in the media<br />

for the last 10 years, I know how the<br />

media works and how it affects readers as<br />

news c<strong>on</strong>sumers. But my experience with<br />

the tabloids made me realise how news<br />

can affect readers. Am<strong>on</strong>g the few less<strong>on</strong>s<br />

I’ve learnt, which crime reporters might<br />

remember, are:<br />

1 STRESSING THE VICTIM’S APPEARANCE<br />

ADDS LITTLE SUBSTANCE TO CRIME<br />

REPORTAGE. Why use this angle at all?<br />

Most news stories began with Nidia’s<br />

good looks. If anything, it makes us w<strong>on</strong>der<br />

if it <strong>on</strong>ly adds to the titillati<strong>on</strong> factor<br />

and speculati<strong>on</strong>: If she was pretty, could<br />

it have been a love angle? A spurned or<br />

jealous lover? A crime of passi<strong>on</strong>?<br />

Focusing <strong>on</strong> looks also trivialises the victim<br />

and the crime.<br />

2 DOUBLE-CHECK YOUR FACTS, ESPECIALLY<br />

WHEN IT CONCERNS THE VICTIM’S REPUTA-<br />

TION. When victims aren’t around to<br />

defend themselves, their closest kin feel<br />

obliged to do so. By questi<strong>on</strong>ing the victim’s<br />

reputati<strong>on</strong>, you are adding <strong>on</strong>e<br />

more burden for the family. They have<br />

enough <strong>on</strong> their plate as it is. They can<br />

<strong>on</strong>ly take so much physical and emoti<strong>on</strong>al<br />

pressure. D<strong>on</strong>’t add to it.<br />

3 GRIEF IS A PRIVATE EXPERIENCE, NOT A<br />

PUBLIC SPECTACLE. Ask permissi<strong>on</strong> before<br />

you barge into a wake and burial rites<br />

with your obtrusive cameras and tape<br />

recorders. Tread gently while asking questi<strong>on</strong>s<br />

and leave the bereaved al<strong>on</strong>e.<br />

Though it may be cathartic, few people<br />

relish being shown at their most vulnerable<br />

<strong>on</strong> nati<strong>on</strong>al televisi<strong>on</strong>. Realise that<br />

friends and neighbours who drop in during<br />

the wake are not very savvy about the<br />

media. They are easy prey and can be<br />

manipulated to say what you want them<br />

to through loaded questi<strong>on</strong>s. Shame <strong>on</strong><br />

you if you talk to the relatives just to get<br />

sensati<strong>on</strong>al quotes they may regret later.<br />

4 BE HONEST. Introduce yourself properly<br />

when you c<strong>on</strong>duct interviews. At<br />

Nidia’s wake, two tabloid reporters tried<br />

to pass themselves off as mourners and<br />

probed relatives about what they knew of<br />

the case. Such speculati<strong>on</strong> and unguarded<br />

revelati<strong>on</strong>s, when magnified in the<br />

media, might jeopardise investigati<strong>on</strong><br />

and scare off potential witnesses.<br />

5 DON’T STOOP FOR A SCOOP. Underhand<br />

tricks may be fine for government<br />

officials trying to fudge public records,<br />

but not when dealing with individuals<br />

grappling with grief. One tabloid photographer<br />

wanted to take photos of the<br />
