Thepace is intense butthe rewards areconsiderable.<strong>THE</strong> PROGRAMThe Academy’s intensive, weeklong programof instruction focuses on the trial processitself, everything that happens in the courtroomfrom voir dire to verdict. With the useof interesting and challenging case files, allparticipants are given specific assignmentsfor each day of the program. Four days ofthe course are devoted to trial exercises (e.g.,delivering an opening statement or conductinga cross examination of a witness); the otherthree days involve complete trials. On the finalday of the program, cases are tried in sixseparate courtrooms before jurors selectedfrom the community.Under the tutelage of Clifford E. Haines and afaculty of premier trial lawyers and eminentjudges, participants engage in this rigorousand comprehensive schedule of trialassignments, all of which is observed andcritiqued by the instructors and fellow students.Students’ performances are videotaped forlater review and analysis and the facultycritiques each trial exercise. Following thesetrial exercises, demonstrations and lectures bythe faculty are offered.While some attention is given to the fundamentalsof trial lawyering, the Academy’semphasis is focused on theory development(conceptualization), tactics (strategy), and effectivepresentation (persuasion). Inherent in each caseused in the program are practical and ethicalproblems that are carefully addressed.Many consider the Academy of Advocacy at<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>University</strong> James E. <strong>Beasley</strong> School of Lawto be the best program of its kind in the country.The pace is intense and the work is exhausting,but the rewards—as attested to by more than800 lawyers who have completed this programover the years—are considerable.WHO SHOULD ATTENDThe training program is structured particularly for lawyers with morethan five years of experience; many of its participants have come tothe course after ten or even twenty years of courtroom practice.In the thirty years the Academy of Advocacy has offered trainingto practicing attorneys, participants have come from a geographicallydispersed, wide range of law firms, solo practices, governmentagencies, and other institutions.<strong>ACADEMY</strong> <strong>OF</strong> <strong>ADVOCACY</strong>DIRECTOR, CLIFFORD E. HAINESClifford E. Haines enjoys a national reputation as a trial lawyer andas a teacher of trial advocacy. The founder of Haines & Associates,Haines is an expert in jury trials. In addition to directing theAcademy of Advocacy at <strong>Temple</strong> <strong>University</strong> <strong>Beasley</strong> School of Law,Haines teaches in <strong>Temple</strong>’s LL.M. in Trial Advocacy program, teachescontinuing legal education courses, and presents professionaldevelopment seminars for practicing attorneys.Prior to starting his own practice in 2004, Haines was a memberof the Litvin, Blumberg, Matusow & Young law firm for 23 years,representing catastrophically injured people in malpractice andproduct liability suits. For nine years at the outset of his career, Haineswas an assistant district attorney in Philadelphia, where he was chiefof homicide and chief of hiring and training. Haines earned his J.D.,cum laude, from the Ohio State <strong>University</strong> College of Law.Haines was the 1997 chancellor of the 13,000-member PhiladelphiaBar Association, has chaired numerous committees of the PhiladelphiaBar Association, and is a delegate to the American Bar Associationand was a member of the Board of Governors of the Pennsylvania BarAssociation. He is also the current chairman of Pennsylvanians forModern Courts, vice-president of the Opera Company of Philadelphia,and sits on the Board of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.FACILITIES AND TUITIONThe program is conducted atShusterman Hall on <strong>Temple</strong><strong>University</strong>’s main campusin Philadelphia.Tuition for the entire week(inclusive of all course materials,continental breakfasts, three-courseluncheons and one dinner party)is $2,200.OVERNIGHT ACCOMODATIONSArrangements have been made forovernight accommodations at theConwell Inn, conveniently locatedon <strong>Temple</strong>’s campus.
