<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Japan Campus – School of LawJ.D. Semester-Abroad ProgramSpring 2013<strong>Temple</strong> <strong>University</strong>, Japan Campus (TUJ) sponsors J.D. Semester-Abroad Program studentson student visas. You must complete a two-step process to obtain the visa.Step 1: Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (<strong>COE</strong>)Please complete <strong>and</strong> return the enclosed Certificate of Eligibility (<strong>COE</strong>) <strong>Application</strong> Form<strong>and</strong> supporting documents no later than October 15, 2012. To prevent anyunnecessary delays, we strongly encourage you to submit the necessary documents assoon as possible.In addition to completing the <strong>COE</strong> application, please submit the following documents bythe <strong>COE</strong> application deadline. All supporting documents must be in English. Documentssent to TUJ will not be returned.1. Copy of your passportCopy of passport page that shows your photo, personal information, <strong>and</strong> signature2. Two identical passport photos (4 cm high x 3 cm wide)Photos must show a clear, full, front view of your face from the bottom of your chin to thetop of your hair against a white or off-white background. Photos must be official passportphotos taken at such places as a pharmacy or a professional photography studio. Theyalso must be in color <strong>and</strong> printed on photo paper. You may submit 2 inch x 2 inch photosif they are official passport photos.3. Proof of Financial ViabilityTo issue a student visa, the Japanese Immigration Bureau requires that all studentsshow the ability to support themselves. TUJ estimates U.S. $20,000 as the amountnecessary to cover costs, including tuition, school fees, <strong>and</strong> living expenses, for thespring semester. You can show financial viability by submitting copies of anycombination of the following documents: financial aid award letter, bank statements,investment or retirement account statements, available credit lines, loan approvals, orscholarship award letters. Parents, relatives, or acquaintances may submit documentson your behalf. These documents must reflect your current financial situation <strong>and</strong> mustbe dated within three months of the application deadline. You cannot submit documentsafter the application deadline.TUJ will submit your visa application to the Japanese Immigration Bureau. Uponapproval, Immigration should issue a Certificate of Eligibility (<strong>COE</strong>) in either lateNovember or early December.The <strong>COE</strong> authorizes you to apply for a student visa. The <strong>COE</strong> must be processed at aJapanese embassy or consulate outside of Japan. You may not process yourstudent visa in Japan.


Step 2: Apply for the Student <strong>Visa</strong>To apply for your visa, you typically need the following materials: (1) the <strong>COE</strong> (2) visaapplication available at the embassy/consulate, (3) valid passport, (4) one 2-inch squarepassport-sized photograph, <strong>and</strong> (5) proof of residence.The embassy/consulate might also require a copy of your TUJ admission letter, <strong>and</strong>some may charge processing fees. If you need an official admission letter on <strong>Temple</strong>letterhead, please contact the Office of Graduate <strong>and</strong> International Programs at the maincampus on an as-needed basis.Each consulate sets its own hours <strong>and</strong> requirements for visa applications. Some requireappointments or a few business days to process applications, while others will processyour application while you wait. Some require you to send all your materials by mail.You must call or visit the web-site of your local consulate to determine that consulate’sprocedures <strong>and</strong> requirements, as well as to plan for any holiday closures (especially inlate December).
