How will success be measured on an individual and aprogramme basis? You are only able to define these once you haveset clear aims and objectives specific to your situation. These maybe described in terms of improving <strong>coach</strong>ing practice or increasingthe <strong>coach</strong>ing skills of a particular target group. It may be that theaims of your mentoring programme will be delivered against awider <strong>coach</strong> education and development strategy such as thoserelated to <strong>UK</strong>CC qualifications.Defining the problem and purposeThe first step in creating your road map is to clearlyarticulate the problem you are attempting toovercome. In describing the problem, you mayidentify the reason <strong>for</strong> its existence.Example problemA growing number of women <strong>coach</strong>es lack theconfidence and know-how to obtain employment andbe self-sufficient due to a lack of practice opportunitiesin the region.This is the critical first step in any planning process.You must be clear about why a mentoringprogramme is required and what it will be used <strong>for</strong>.There<strong>for</strong>e, the next step is to outline the intendedaim of the mentoring programme (ie the changeyou hope to achieve) and the objectives (ie whatyou need to do in order to achieve the aim).Example aimTo improve the quality of <strong>coach</strong>ing withindisability sport.Example objectives• To help <strong>coach</strong>es within the area take responsibility<strong>for</strong> their learning.• To support <strong>coach</strong>es to make links with <strong>coach</strong>ingenvironments to increase opportunities to practise.• To provide a mentor who <strong>coach</strong>es can turn to <strong>for</strong>advice and support.• To provide a signposting service that enables<strong>coach</strong>es to further develop skills.
