SPORTING ROUND-UP FOR THE AUTUMN TERMRugby records another competitive season...Our rugby fixture list is now stronger than ever; despite twoblock fixtures with very winnable games being lost we stillmanaged to gain a 47% win ratio this season. The 1st XV have playedMcKellar and Oliver Wallis have all been nominated for Surrey trialsthat start in January. The U 14 age group has a lot of depth in the yeargroup and I expect them to improve over the next few years.good rugby and had some creditable wins but two one point lossesAntony Talbot, Head of Rugbyput a dampener on the season. Yiannis Loizias has been outstandingas Captain. Marcus Sirmon and Theo Vukasinovic have played forMiddlesex and Matt Macpherson has been selected for DivisionalTrials in January. The 2nd and 3rd XV’s have also been competitivebut wins have been hard to come by. Pleasingly the Middle <strong>School</strong>have made great strides this year with the U15 and U16 age groupsreally developing. The U16 age group have won the majority of theirgames with only three losses from eighteen games played. The A’scame close to an unbeaten season, only losing narrowly to Cranleigh.The U15 teams have had a really strong year. Their highlight was allthree teams beating St. John’s. Michael Wasko, Harry Spawforth, KyleThe 1st XV in action against Brighton CollegeFantastic results for the Reed’s Powder Byrne Ski Teams...A team retained the title of English <strong>School</strong>boys Open Champions andCaptain James Sieber retained his individual title of English <strong>School</strong>boysIndividual Champion; the girls suffered at the hand of fine marginsand one mistake pushed them back into 4th place. The Reed’s boysski team won the British <strong>School</strong>s’ Championships in Pontypool. Theyhad a difficult time of things on the first run but James Sieber gavethem a healthy lead. On the second run England <strong>School</strong>s racers SamGirls U19 National ChampionsThe Reed’s Powder Byrne ski teams took part in the English and British<strong>School</strong>s’ Championships coming away victorious in many races. In theEnglish finals the Reed’s girls’ U19 team took fifth, sixth and seventhplaces resulting in gold medals and the title of National Championsfor the second time in three years; the U16 boys came up againstsome experienced, older racers but the team was in excellent formand they raced into second place to take the silver medals; the U19boys faced strong opposition, one small mistake proved costly and theHinton and Rory Shiells both recorded good times whilst Ben Fluckcelebrated his international call up to the Wales team by blasting atop 10 time to give Reed’s the trophy for the first time.Congratulations also to Sam Hinton, James Sieber and Ben Fluck (allLower Sixth), Calum Pitkethly and Morgan Davies (Third Form) andRhys Jones and George Dendle (First Form) who have been selectedto join the English <strong>School</strong>s’ senior and junior ski racing squads forthe 2013 season. They form an unprecedented “magnificent 7” of skiracers from Reed’s <strong>School</strong> recognised in the National squads, whichis a feat previously not matched by any other boys’ school!boys had to settle for bronze medals. In the Open Championships theMark Vernon, Head of SkiingU13 Tennis team are 2012 National <strong>School</strong>s’ Champions...The U13 tennis team (Jack Molloy, Brandon Drew, Louis Newman, championship tie-break ensued and this time the pair played brilliantlyJulian Robinson and Tom Thelwall-Jones) played in the finals of theNational <strong>School</strong>s’ Championships. An initial win against Lancaster<strong>School</strong> from Leicester 6-0 was followed by a close and extremelyexciting contest with Merchiston Castle from Edinburgh. At 3-1 downafter four matches the boys managed to claw back to 3-3. In thedeciding tie-break they finally prevailed 10-8. The final, against longterm rivals Millfield, started badly with the boys going 2-0 down butto win 10-5.Adrian Blackman, Head of Tenniswith perseverance they pulled it back to 3-3 after the six matches. Take Three Girls Hockey teams...It has been a season of continued development for the Girls’ Hockeyat Reed’s <strong>School</strong> with great achievements, new initiatives, a greaterdepth of fixtures and teams and further international successes. The1st XI recorded eight wins and reached the semi finals of the SurreyCup, despite losing their captain and England international, EllenPaterson, for the whole season. They also reached the semi-final ofthe St George’s 6’s plate. Reed’s once again hosted an invitationaltournament and it proved to be a highly successful day blessed withsunshine and the presence of teams from CLFS, Churcher’s College,Lancing College, Sevenoaks <strong>School</strong> and Wellington College. TheReed’s girls acquitted themselves well; Wellington took the title forthe second consecutive year and we aim to retrieve it from them nextyear! The 2nd XI have shown real progression over the course of theseason and gained some very creditable results. Highlights of theirseason include victories against King Edward’s Whitley 1st XI, Box Hill1st XI and a first victory at 2nd XI level against St George’s. The biggestachievement of the whole season however was the 2nd XI winningthe KCS Wimbledon Invitational Tournament. Here the team playedsuperbly beating KCS 1st XI, KCS 2nd XI, Reed’s 3rd XI, Box Hill 1stXI and drawing with Tiffin 1st XI. The whole squad deserve muchGolf Team makes regional finals...Two Reeds Golf teams played in the ISGA SinglesMatchplay Tournament, Southern region semifinals. Stephen Hobson, Max O’Hagan and JamieDawson battled the rain and RGS Guildford’s bestgolfers on their home course and came awaywith a convincing win. The other team playedCharterhouse at Burhill but facing tough oppositionthe net result was only one Reed’s team through tothe regional finals. 18 teams from schools all overthe UK travelled to ‘The Shire London’ to compete inthe annual ISGA Junior <strong>School</strong>s Cup. Reed’s enteredtwo teams; with five holes over 500 yards, the ‘courseThis has been a very exciting term for the squash teams at Reed’s<strong>School</strong> who have progressed through to the knockout stagesof both the U15 and U19 National <strong>School</strong>s’ Squash Competitionafter coming second in both of the group stages. The U15 team arethrough to the second round after beating Epsom away 4-1. TheU19 team have had a superb success rate beating all oppositionincluding Wellington College and Cranleigh whilst only losing to StPaul’s <strong>School</strong> and Eton College in close 3-2 battles. Our U15 team hasreally developed and they are strong in depth too having had a nearclean sweep of victories, only losing to Eton College.Alexa Prior, Head of Squashcredit for this achievement and they have been well captained byPippa Wood. The 3rd XI have played more fixtures than ever beforeand have had some success – even doing the double over theirCharterhouse counterparts. The fun and enjoyment that the girls inthis team have had is just as important as the success; we have trueprogression through our three teams. The opportunity for all to playat their respective level remains just as important as the desire forsuccess with the 1st XI. The season finished with an inaugural GirlsHockey Dinner with Team GB Bronze Medallist Sally Walton as ourguest; she presented awards and gave a very inspiring speech.Ben Edwards, Head of Girls HockeyThe 2nd XI hockey team with their winning trophymanagement’ skills of the young Reed’s teams weretested fully. Hugo Figueiredo and Lewis Brownstarted really well and showing great determinationand concentration they finished in second place.Enrique Dimayuga and Alexander Gadd playedwell over the first half of the course, but then lostmomentum to finish in a very creditable sixth place.Second Former Scott Murray was recently crownedSurrey County U14 Order of Merit Scratch championbeating 64 top golfers in the county. Scott is only 12and is the youngest ever winner of this title.Terry Harrison, Head of GolfSquash and Cross Country run ahead...Scott MurrayThe Reed’s <strong>School</strong> Inter Boys team ran at the English <strong>School</strong>s’ CrossCountry regional final finishing sixth out of the twelve schoolsthat took part. The conditions were wet and slippery but the coursewas flatter than expected so some fast times were posted. HarrySpawforth did well to stay with the leading pack and, with a strongfinish, came third overall. George Robbins ran a gutsy race to finishin 25th position. Other scorers were Will Maslen and Hector Earley,both of whom secured places in the top 50%.
