HOUSE CHARITY FUNDRAISING over £14,000 raised this term...Chris Sharp-Paul, Ed Dyer and George Rounce before their Gorilla run; Will Baker during his Channel swim & ‘Gorillas’ in thegrounds at Reed’sCapel has continued to support the Hascombe Children’s remaining wild populations of mountain gorillas are found. TheWard at Royal Surrey Hospital, Guildford, in memory of Old presentation culminated in an intriguing debate where members ofReedonian Emma Crook who was treated there and the House has the Debating Society contested the motion that human survival israised an amazing £12,046.89 so far. Will Baker’s herculean effortsat swimming the English Channel have eclipsed everyone else’sfundraising efforts and, in fact, even eclipsed his own target of £5,000as he actually raised £11,216.22 in the end. Donna Townsend,Clinical Nurse Specialist for Children and Teenagers with Cancer atthe Royal Surrey, said: “We would like to congratulate and thankWill on his amazing swim and fundraising achievement. The moneywill be used to create a space where patients can relax away fromthe clinical areas of the ward. The Teenage Cancer Unit is a uniquespace already having been purpose built for young people so this willadd an area for them to talk to other teenagers and catch up withtheir friends and family.” Pupils in Mullens have supported the GorillaOrganisation this term. Jillian Miller, the Gorilla Organisation’s ChiefExecutive delivered a fascinating presentation to pupils in Assemblyon the work of her charity in developing countries where the lastmore important than animal life. Matthew Callender’s impassionedfinal speech captivated the audience. Pupils in Mullens then took tothe sodden turf of 12 Acre dressed in gorilla suits for the inauguralReed’s Great Gorilla Run. All participants showed terrific spirit bybraving the elements to make this a highly memorable and enjoyableevent. The total amount raised from this event as well as the CharityArts Revue and a cake sale now total £1,700 with a pledged total of£2,000 in all. This includes individual amounts raised of £460 by MattTzemis (U6th) and £260 by George Rounce (L6th) in the Gorilla Run.Blathwayt and Bristowe supported the Pancreatic Cancer ResearchFund, and Harrison’s Fund (which works to fight Duchenne musculardystrophy) respectively, raising a total amount of just under £1,000 intotal at the Charity Arts Revue from ticket sales, a cake sale and abadge sale to be split equally between the two charities.THE CLOSE BOYS SETTLE IN with fun-filled activities...The first event of the year in the battle for the Kemp Cup - theHouse sporting cup for Year 7 & 8 pupils in The Close – wasthe Tug-of-War. Each House entered two First Form teams and aSecond Form team. After pouring grit, determination and sweat intothe mix to help their Houses, Reedhams ran out eventual winnersto take an early lead in the Kemp Cup with Royal Wanstead comingin second. It was an excellent event with bundles of House spiritand endeavour on show. Many thanks to the impressive number ofparents who supported so vocally. The day after the great tug-ofwarcompetition the First Form boys took on the challenge of theHigh Ashurst Outdoor Centre. They all threw themselves into theactivities and impressed both their tutors and instructors with theirdetermination to succeed. With some manoeuvres more akin to aSpiderman movie they clambered up and down the climbing andabseiling wall. Overcoming their fears on the ‘leap of faith’ high ropescourse was brilliant to watch with everyone getting cheered on bytheir teammates.
