Thank youThank you Vielen Dank Gracias Obrigado MerciThe generosity of the Cushing Academy community has been truly inspiring. Overall giving to Cushing Academytotaled nearly $4.5 million, an 11 percent increase, including a record-breaking year for our annual fund.We had more than 400 new donors this year and together they donated $439,105 to the Academy. Many of thosenew donors had their gifts matched through the generosity of two challenge matches by members of our Board ofTrustees—Jeremy Duffy, Richard Harrington, along with Mark Casady and his wife Julia. This kind of support is a solidfoundation for the future of our school. It means we’re engaging new alumni and new families. And in the end, acommunity that is fully engaged in the mission and excellence of the Academy bodes well for its future.Support from our international families has been especially generous, highlighting just one more way the Academy’sdiversity adds to its excellence. Of particular note is that 100 percent of our Japanese families gave this year, setting animpressive bar for other countries to follow. There are several gifts that deserve particular mention. A gift from the Schottland family enabled us to renovate theMary Hare House, providing updated space for female students and a faculty family. Joining the Schottlands in theircommitment to enhancing living spaces on campus, the Chu family of Hong Kong also made a gift that will enableupgrades to Alumni Hall.We also received several important gifts in support of programs on campus including funding from the E. E. FordFoundation, which supported Chemistry teacher Grant Geske’s innovative iClass table (see page 20).Several projects funded this year were possible because a group of donors were united in a common purpose. The Classof 1971 is funding a “Spinmobile” to aid visitors to campus who have issues with mobility (see page 18) and our seniorclass parents, under the leadership of Cindy Pasternak, P ’12, pooled their resources to help us renovate the studentcenter (see page 25), leaving a legacy for future generations of Cushing students. Finally, I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the ongoing generosity of the Watkins and Fisher families, whose giftsto the Cushing endowment have been instrumental in providing educational opportunities for our students. Each of you is a partner as we develop programs that will prepare our students for the challenges of a world that ischanging quickly. You help ensure our campus facilities stand the test of time and that we are offering our studentsthe very best educational experiences we can. On behalf of everyone at Cushing Academy, a most sincere thank youfor your support.Gratefully,Seamus CollinsVice President of Development1

They have come together to donatea golf cart to Cushing, dubbed the “Spinmobile.” The giftwill benefit every visitor to campus by providing valuabletransportation for guests who have challenges to their mobility.“It is with great affection and pride that I am able to supportSpin’s memory and to have known such a wonderful spiritand person” said one class member of her gift to support theSpinmobile. Spin also remembered Cushing Academy as partof a bequest. The funds from that bequest will also support theproject, ensuring that no visitor to Cushing will be frustratedby its terrain.Student DevelopmentAdvisory BoardAngelique Arazi ’12Grace S. PICTURE THIS...IMPACT OFGIVINGPARENTS PLAY KEY ROLEIN ADVANCING CUSHING’SACADEMIC SUPPORT PROGRAMAS YOU MIGHT IMAGINE, a student body as diverseas Cushing’s encompasses many learning styles. The Academic Support Program helps studentsdevelop skills and strategies that help them excelat Cushing, in college, and in the workplace, andit helps students in all aspects of their lives—arts, sports, personal development, study skills—not justacademics. During the 2011-2012 school year, therewere nearly 90 students in the program—almost 20percent of those who attend Cushing.CUSHING ACADEMY DONORSRISE TO THE CHALLENGESIn fiscal year 2012, several donors challenged Cushingalumni and parents to raise more than $200,000in support of the school. Last fall, trustees DickHarrington, president of the board and parent ofa member of the Class of 2007, and Jeremy Duffy, vice president of the board and an alumnus fromthe Class of 1989, launched the Harrington-DuffyChallenge. In that challenge, all new and increasedgifts received by December 31, 2011, were matcheddollar for dollar. Similarly, in January 2012, trusteeMark Casady and his wife, Julia, parents ’08 and’15, issued a challenge to all Cushing parents. Theywould match new or increased parent gifts made tothe Cushing Annual Fund. Like the Harrington-DuffyChallenge, the Casady Challenge was a dollar fordollar match, made through the Casadys’ foundation,One Step Forward Education Foundation, Inc.Gifts to the program provide resources for capitalimprovements as well as endowment income. Thepurchase of ergonomic furniture, noise-dampeninghead phones, and other tools will take the programto the next level. Endowment income providesregular and ongoing resources that help staff attendconferences, both to enhance their own professionaldevelopment and to make presentations, showingCushing as a leader in the field. The endowment willalso help upgrade technology as the older technologybecomes obsolete. This year, a gift from one family, made in recognitionof their son’s graduation as part of the Class of 2012,is being used to support the program. This supportof the Academic Support Program will help theAcademy advance the educations of nearly a hundredstudents in 2012-2013. “We are deeply indebted toall Cushing Academy has done for [our son] to helpnurture his growth. . . .Cushing Academy will alwayshave a special place in our hearts,” they said ofmaking their gift.Alumni and parents rose to those challenges, raising$276,676 and ensuring that the Academy received thematching gifts of $250,000.2011-2012 CUSHING ANNUAL REPORT 19

The new tool is theiClass table and it is possible in part because of gifts to the Academy. The iClass table is highly adaptive, serving the needs of varied learningand teaching styles. The tables can be operated independently or linked, allowing for a variety of learning opportunities. Geske created the tableto put technology to work in the classroom and use it to make learningfun. “My biggest fear is that we’re killing kids’ imaginations and desire tolearn more about what’s around them by boring them. This helps connectkids back to science, why it’s fun and why it’s neat,” he said. It’s working. “It’s impossible to be bored while using these tables,” saidjunior Mallory Fredericks. “And you can’t stray from chemistry because Dr.G has full control over the screens and sees what you do.”Gifts to Cushing provide the fuel for innovative programs like the iClasstable. This year, gifts to the Cushing Academy Fund have helped offsetsome of the cost of developing the table. The Academy has also receivedfinancial support from the Edward E. Ford Foundation, which approveda $50,000 matching grant to support the acquisition of componentmaterials, teacher training, and curriculum and program development.A generous Cushing family stepped up to meet that challenge, helpingus complete the grant and sending a strong message that they believein Cushing’s commitment to developing creative educational tools andprograms.Learn More To see a video and learn more about how the iClass tableworks, visit cushing.org/iclass.20WWW.CUSHING.ORG/GIVE

IMPACT OFGIVINGMaintaining our Heritageand Advancing our FutureCUSHING’S RESIDENTIAL FACILITIES are an essential part of the Academyexperience. Approximately 85 percent of our students live on campus and in ourdorms, where lifelong friendships and student-teacher bonds are forged. As such, webelieve it is important to design, build, and maintain residential spaces that reflectand nurture the sense of community that makes Cushing special. Many of the residences on the Cushing campus have been housing our students andfaculty for generations. These historic buildings add to the charm and community ofthe Academy, but they also require regular maintenance and upgrades to ensure weare providing quality living spaces that meet the needs of our contemporary studentsand faculty.Gifts to the Cushing Academy Fund provide needed resources to maintain our historicbuildings, but this year, gifts to the Cushing Academy Fund have also offset the costsassociated with the construction of new faculty housing. The new building, housingtwo faculty residences, is now occupied and providing a home for two Cushingfaculty families .New faculty housing made possible because of donations to Cushing Academy2011-2012 CUSHING ANNUAL REPORT 21

Donors Help CushingStudents Dream of BhutanAT CUSHING ACADEMY, fostering acommitment to principled leadership is afundamental part of our commitment todelivering an advanced education. Centralto achieving that goal is giving studentsthe opportunity to engage in cross-culturallearning experiences so that they can fullyenvision and consider the complex issuesthat will impact their future. In March2012, three Cushing Academy facultymembers and four Cushing Academystudents went on a journey to a countrymany Americans have never seen: Bhutan. The trip was a joint venture betweenCushing Academy and the Bhutan CanadaFoundation. Bhutan’s reigning monarch,His Majesty King Jigme Khesar NamgyelWangchuck, graduated from CushingAcademy in 1999.Students involved in this program participatedin a cross-disciplinary course of study duringthe 2012 winter term called “Dreams ofBhutan.” The purpose of the course was tointroduce Cushing students to the history, culture, and religious heritage of Bhutan,as well as its 21st-century geo-political andsocial challenges. But more than being justan educational experience for one group ofCushing students and faculty, the trip was thefirst step in building an ongoing partnershipwith a Bhutanese high school that will open adialog and exchange of ideas between CushingAcademy and the Asian country.Gifts to the Academy helped make the trippossible because the Cushing Academy Fundprovides resources that ensure CushingAcademy leadership has the flexibility to takeadvantage of such opportunities when theypresent themselves. Without the support ofdonors, it would be more difficult to offerthese kinds of experiences to our students.MEETING THE KINGWhile visiting Bhutan, the Cushingdelegation had the opportunity tomeet with the country’s king, a 1999graduate of the Academy.22WWW.CUSHING.ORG/GIVE

NYC ReceptionFeatures StudentArtworkARTWORK ON THIS PAGEYe Bai, Alanna Priest, Fiona Kusza, Jennifer Tonti, and Seung Yong KimCushing alumni and donors advance the institution in many ways. They do itthrough giving, they do it by hosting and attending events, and they do it by givingtheir time and counsel to Cushing leadership. Aaron Earls ’90 has done all of that.He was a featured speaker for the 2011 commencement ceremony and also hosted analumni event at the Soho Club in New York City in December 2011.The event featured student artwork and while attendees were reminiscing andreconnecting, they were invited to participate in a silent auction of artwork created by11 Cushing students. The entire collection of over 25 pieces – which included jewelry, pottery, photography, paintings, stained and fused glass – sold that night, and studentschose to donate 50 percent of their profits to the Cushing Academy Fund.24WWW.CUSHING.ORG/GIVE

RENOVATIONSDay Student RoomRenovationAlthough a majority of Cushing students are boarding students, our daystudents are a valued and important part of our community. For severalyears, the Academy’s day students have spent time between classes, as wellas before and after school, in the day student lounge in the Main Building.Often, boarding students join them there and the space serves as a commonspace that facilitates the Academy’s sense of home and community. However, the space was furnished with old furniture and cast-off lockersand was in need of attention. The day student room renovation wasa project initially proposed by a group of organized, thoughtful daystudents who asked for help in getting their space updated. The renovation included removing a wall and taking over space fromthe old dance studio and a storage room to create a much larger spacefor the students. The room has new lighting and glass to bring in morenatural light, brand new lockers—in purple, of course—as well as all newflooring, furniture, and fixtures. It has tables and c hairs for study aswell as comfortable furniture with tablet arms for laptop use. Perhapsthe most interesting change in the space is uncovering some archways inthe back of the room that were part of the original gymnasium and lendcharacter to the space that it had previously lacked.Student CenterRenovationThe Cushing Academy Student Center is often hopping in theafternoons and evenings. It’s a place where students gatherto chat, play games, or purchase snacks at the snack bar. It ishome to post office boxes and the school bookstore. Becauseof its regular use, the space was in need of an update and theparents of the Class of 2012 stepped up to the plate to ensureit got one.During the 2011-2012 school year, senior class parents raised$170,000 to support the renovation of the student center. Theupdated student center has new furniture; new pool and pingpongtables; up-to-date video games; an updated media space;general upgrades of carpeting, paint, and lighting; and thecreation of outdoor space for student use.The cost of the renovation was offset with funds from the CushingAcademy Fund, proof that every day, the generosity of our donors isimproving the quality of life on campus.SULLIVAN GIFT KEEPS CUSHING HEALTHYIn March 2012, George and Tammy Sullivan made a donation in honor oftheir daughter Jordan, a member of Cushing’s Class of 2011. The donationmade possible the purchase of new cardio equipment in the Iorio Arena.Because it is hard for many members of the Cushing community toget off campus to take advantage of local gyms, this equipment is acritical part of Cushing’s commitment to promoting good health amongits faculty and students. Further, equipment like that donated by theSullivan family promotes excellence on Cushing’s athletic teams byproviding first-rate training equipment.2011-2012 CUSHING ANNUAL REPORT 25
