S&S racing pistons offer a highdegree of flexibility to the engine builder, but require fairly sophisticatedmachining capability in order to make use of them. Compression ratiodepends on the engine displacement and cylinder head combustionchamber volume, and are therefore not shown in most cases. All pistons areavailable only in sets, and come complete with rings and wristpins. Racingpistons will be machined for piston-to-piston and piston-to-flywheelclearance if engine stroke, connecting rod length, and flywheel diameterare known. One common area of confusion is the meaning of theterms "piston deck" and "piston dome". The deck of a piston is the point atwhich the dome begins. Some pistons have a flat area at this point and somedo not. The dome is the very top of the piston, which in some cases extendsup into the combustion chamber, and in some cases is flat at the level of thedeck or even below. "Deck Height" refers to the distance between the centerof the wristpin hole to the deck of the piston.
