Cheap shopping Close to the National Park is the national border with Paraguay. The taxes that people pay in Paraguay are not as high as in Brazil. This means that if people leave Brazil for the day and go to the town of Ciudad del Este in Paraguay they can buy things much more cheaply. Lots of tourists cross the bridge into Paraguay and go shopping for cheaper and often counterfeit clothes, shoes, perfume and electronic gadgets. How is the North East being developed for tourists? The government of Brazil knows that tourism is very important for the country – it brings in a lot of money from foreign and domestic visitors. The government has invested a huge amount of money in developing tourist facilities and the North East region of Brazil has been boosted by this. The number of people taking a holiday in the North East region has shot up – and the number of hotels has grown to match this. Major hotel chains like Sheraton, Accord and Best Western now have bases in the North East and there are hundreds of smaller guest houses. In the area around Itacaré there are miles of beautiful beaches with palm trees, mangrove forests and streams that crash over waterfalls on their way to the sea. As well as enjoying the coastal area tourists can also head inland to enjoy some exciting extreme sports in the rainforest. Among those on offer are river rafting, abseiling and mountain biking.
