Biodiversity
The forest in the National Park contains over
2,000 plant varieties and 400 species of bird.
There are 50 different types of deer and over
200 species of butterfly. This diverse ecosystem
is one of the main reasons that tourists come to
the region.
Fishing
In the upper reaches of the Paraná River, one
of the world’s greatest game fish can be found.
It’s called the dourado and is also known as
the Golden Salmon because of its size and
colour. The fishing season for the dourado is
between October and March. Thousands of
people get their fishing tackle out on the river
banks every year.
The Hydro-electric Plant
Foz do Iguaçu is only a medium-sized town,
but it’s the third biggest tourist attraction in
Brazil, after Rio and São Paulo. Many people
come here as a base for visiting the nearby
waterfalls, but a massive hydro-electric plant is
also a popular place to visit. The dam at Itaipu
is, in fact, the second biggest hydro-electric
plant in the world, and it produces a lot of
Brazil’s electricity.
