<strong>Nordstrom</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> School’s<strong>Spell</strong>-A-<strong>Thon</strong> & <strong>Spell</strong>ing <strong>Bee</strong>The <strong>Nordstrom</strong> Home & School Club is happy to announce that this year our school will participate ina <strong>Spell</strong>-A-<strong>Thon</strong> fundraiser as well as a more traditional academic <strong>Spell</strong>ing <strong>Bee</strong>. It is a fun event, opento all students. All the money raised will benefit the school and it is rooted in academics (writing,reading, and listening skills in addition to personal growth such as self-esteem and competitiveness).Here’s how it works: Students will study the grade-level word lists and collect pledges from familyand friends. For every word that the student spells correctly during round one, our school enjoysfinancial benefits! The top 15 spellers in each grade will advance to a grade-level academiccompetition.March 8th – Round I [K – 6 th ] <strong>Spell</strong>-A-<strong>Thon</strong>Pledge forms are due March 8 th but we encourage you to get them in sooner. Each classroom willadminister a written examination (approx. 20-30 words depending on grade level). The words willbe selected from the enclosed grade-level word list, which is also available on the school’s website.Challenge words will be used to break a tie. The top 15 spellers from grades 1 st through 6 th willadvance to round two. Kinders do not move on to the <strong>Spell</strong>ing <strong>Bee</strong> but all kinders will participate ina spelling activity.Week of March 11th – Round II [1 st - 6 th ] Academic <strong>Spell</strong>ing <strong>Bee</strong>Grades 1 st – 3 rd (Bumble <strong>Bee</strong>s)March 12 th Written CompetitionResource Room (Time – TBD)Grades 4 th – 6 th (Worker <strong>Bee</strong>s)March 14 th Oral CompetitionMulti-Purpose Room (Time – TBD)This round is grade-level specific. The words will be randomly selected from the grade-level wordlist. When those words are exhausted, we will randomly use words from an additional list. AllBumble <strong>Bee</strong>s will receive the same word orally and then write that word. Each Worker <strong>Bee</strong> willreceive a randomly selected word orally and then be asked to spell the word orally. Students willremain in the competition until they misspell a word. Rules will be posted on the school’s website.Ribbons will be awarded to all round two participants. The winners will receive other awards and berecognized on a school plaque.


NORDSTROM ELEMENTARY SCHOOLSPELL-A-THON PLEDGE SHEETI will be participating in a <strong>Spell</strong>-A-<strong>Thon</strong> on March 8 th 2013, at <strong>Nordstrom</strong> <strong>Elementary</strong> School.I am asking you to please make a pledge of a set amount or a per-correct-word pledge to helpmy school raise funds (K – 20 words, 1 st – 3 rd 25 words & 4 th – 6 th 30 words). The funds will gotoward replacement of our old play structure and other enrichment activities.After my test is scored, I will let you know the total amount due.
