3. Historical significanceHistorical value is an important aspect of Earth sciencesite assessment. Britain played an important role in thehistory and development of geology and consequentlymany sites are of importance as the place wherescientific concepts were first demonstrated. Recordedhistory is also important in making links between thenatural environment and our cultural heritage and localdistinctiveness, for example, the link between localgeology, quarries and building stone.Criteria for assessing sites of historical value.H1 If the site is historically important in termsof advances in geological/geomorphologicalknowledge, it will be considered eligible forselection.H2 If the Earth science interest of the site has importanthistorical links with the local environment,vernacular building stones etc, it will be consideredeligible for selection.H3 If the site has any important associations withculture, folklore or religion that can be directlylinked to the Earth science interest, it will beconsidered eligible for selection.H4 If the site has any archaeological significance thatcan be directly linked to the Earth science interest,it will be considered eligible for selection.St Erth Pits.4. Aesthetic value (value for publicawareness and appreciation)Local sites give the opportunity to raise awareness of thewider significance of rocks, soils and physical processesin our daily lives and as a key part of our naturalheritage, landscape and scenery. The aesthetic value ofa site therefore plays an important part in stimulatinginterest and awareness in the Earth sciences and leadingthe way to unlocking the educational potential forpeople of all ages to learn about the natural world.Criteria for assessing sites of aestheticvalue (value for public awareness andappreciation).A1 If the Earth science interest of the site is an essentialcomponent of an attractive or evocative locallandscape it will be considered eligible for selection.Castellated Cliffs.A2 If the site could be used to promote publicawareness and appreciation of geology/geomorphology, it will be considered eligible forselection.County Geology Site Criteria for Cornwall & The Isles of ScillyPage 11
