Exercises <strong>in</strong> Aimed Solar Returns<strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> Blog <strong>of</strong> Ciro Discepolo (91)Dear Ciro,Is <strong>it</strong> possible for you to repost <strong>the</strong> letter one should carry w<strong>it</strong>h (expla<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gactive astrology) when go<strong>in</strong>g overseas just <strong>in</strong> case <strong>of</strong> gett<strong>in</strong>g deta<strong>in</strong>ed atcustoms/immigration. Thank you k<strong>in</strong>dly,JulieDear Julie, surely. It is here:The Active Astrology by Ciro DiscepoloI discovered astrology at <strong>the</strong> age <strong>of</strong> 22, dur<strong>in</strong>g my mil<strong>it</strong>ary service at <strong>the</strong>airport <strong>of</strong> Lat<strong>in</strong>a <strong>in</strong> 1970. I dipped <strong>in</strong>to <strong>it</strong> immediately and w<strong>it</strong>h a greatpassion. I understood that <strong>the</strong> only way to learn astrology is not by study<strong>in</strong>gdozens <strong>of</strong> books (which I actually did for many hours a day, yet).On <strong>the</strong> contrary, you have to practise <strong>it</strong> on <strong>the</strong> field; you have to meethundreds <strong>of</strong> people and cast <strong>the</strong>ir natal charts; thus mak<strong>in</strong>g mistakes andlearn<strong>in</strong>g by mistakes. I don't th<strong>in</strong>k that <strong>the</strong>re is any better way to learnastrology. Before meet<strong>in</strong>g somebody I studied his/her chart for hours,dropp<strong>in</strong>g notes and wonder<strong>in</strong>g how he/she would look like; what wouldhis/her character and cultural <strong>in</strong>terests be, and so on. I eventually met <strong>the</strong>consult<strong>in</strong>g person, whom <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> great major<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> cases I didn't know before, and my real study began after he/she had gone away. Then I reconsidered<strong>the</strong> whole try<strong>in</strong>g to understand what I had mistaken, and why. Such tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>gcourse was giv<strong>in</strong>g me good results and I noticed that, even if <strong>the</strong> path I wasstepp<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>to was boundless, every day I was advanc<strong>in</strong>g a l<strong>it</strong>tle fur<strong>the</strong>r.Astrology had become my great passion; <strong>it</strong> had an even stronger charm

on me than <strong>in</strong>formatics – <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r nourishment <strong>of</strong> my soul. But <strong>the</strong>re wasone th<strong>in</strong>g that I wasn't able to accept and I couldn't stand at all: <strong>of</strong>ten I metpeople who were to face very hard trans<strong>it</strong>s and evidently dramatic s<strong>it</strong>uations– and I could do noth<strong>in</strong>g for <strong>the</strong>m! To hide <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> truth? This was aga<strong>in</strong>stmy pr<strong>in</strong>ciples: I didn't want to deceive <strong>the</strong>m. To tell <strong>the</strong>m <strong>the</strong> truth – well Ihad to, but how? How could I face <strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ir disappo<strong>in</strong>tment, <strong>the</strong>ir fears? That was <strong>the</strong> most impell<strong>in</strong>g knotty problem I had to solve if I wanted tokeep be<strong>in</strong>g an astrologer. Dur<strong>in</strong>g those years I also undertook my first Jungianpsychoanalysis and I used to read loads <strong>of</strong> books on psychology. Verysoon I got fasc<strong>in</strong>ated by <strong>the</strong> concept <strong>of</strong> "constellat<strong>in</strong>g a symbol" or, as Inamed <strong>it</strong> later on: "exorcization <strong>of</strong> a symbol".In psychology to constellate means to activate, i.e. to br<strong>in</strong>g someth<strong>in</strong>g tolife. Once I happened to read w<strong>it</strong>h an extraord<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>terest <strong>the</strong> preface thatGianfranco Tedeschi, a Jungian psychoanalyst and a school founder <strong>in</strong> Italy, wrote to <strong>the</strong> Italian paperback ed<strong>it</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Jung's study on schizophrenia(Psicologia della schiz<strong>of</strong>renia, Newton Compton Italiana). You'll read more about <strong>it</strong> a l<strong>it</strong>tle fur<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> this book; <strong>the</strong>n you'll understandhow this example can be considered <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> a good portion <strong>of</strong> mypractice <strong>of</strong> astrology, which consequently goes under <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong>"exorcization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbol".While I was greedily absorb<strong>in</strong>g those read<strong>in</strong>gs I also studied <strong>the</strong> SolarReturns. From <strong>the</strong> very beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g I discovered that <strong>it</strong> was possible to change<strong>the</strong>m, even <strong>in</strong> full, by simply be<strong>in</strong>g somewhere else on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> your birthday. These two co<strong>in</strong>cident discoveries l<strong>it</strong> a sparkle <strong>in</strong> me – <strong>the</strong> desire to follow away, to try to make light, to check up on some possibil<strong>it</strong>ies. I had found asemi-hidden path and I was try<strong>in</strong>g to light <strong>it</strong> up w<strong>it</strong>h a weak torch. Thatwould be my future way. I would never leave <strong>it</strong>. I'm still try<strong>in</strong>g to improve <strong>it</strong>every s<strong>in</strong>gle day s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong>n.The Exorcization <strong>of</strong> Symbols and <strong>the</strong> Aimed Solar Returns are <strong>the</strong>foundation <strong>of</strong> my Active Astrology. The Exorcization <strong>of</strong> SymbolsI'm sure that <strong>the</strong> more watchful readers and followers <strong>of</strong> astrology cannotignore this current s<strong>it</strong>uation. We, <strong>the</strong> authors, are aligned essentially on threealmost <strong>in</strong>compatible pos<strong>it</strong>ions that eventually determ<strong>in</strong>e one's personal way<strong>of</strong> understand<strong>in</strong>g and mak<strong>in</strong>g astrology. The first, yet not <strong>the</strong> most importantschool claims that astrology is an <strong>in</strong>strument <strong>of</strong> knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> humanpsyche and <strong>it</strong> doesn't allow <strong>the</strong> least prediction. Those who th<strong>in</strong>k so argue

that Saturn and Uranus have noth<strong>in</strong>g to do w<strong>it</strong>h John Sm<strong>it</strong>h even if JohnSm<strong>it</strong>h is be<strong>in</strong>g robbed <strong>of</strong> all his goods <strong>the</strong> very same moment when <strong>the</strong>setwo planets cross <strong>the</strong> threshold <strong>of</strong> his natal 2nd House. It's <strong>the</strong> sameas imply<strong>in</strong>g that trans<strong>it</strong>s, Solar Returns and primary directions are goodfor noth<strong>in</strong>g.The second sort or "school" <strong>of</strong> astrology fully adm<strong>it</strong>s <strong>the</strong> power <strong>of</strong> trans<strong>it</strong>s,to such an extent that <strong>it</strong> is considered useless to "apply yourself" becauseeveryth<strong>in</strong>g is already wr<strong>it</strong>ten <strong>in</strong> your natal chart; and no one can do anyth<strong>in</strong>gaga<strong>in</strong>st fate.F<strong>in</strong>ally, here comes <strong>the</strong> third school: those who th<strong>in</strong>k like me: i.e. thattrans<strong>it</strong>s, Solar and Lunar Returns, and primary directions work faultlessly, but you have got <strong>the</strong> chance to antagonize <strong>the</strong>se forces: i.e. to fight aga<strong>in</strong>st<strong>the</strong>m. Of course, all I wrote <strong>in</strong> my previous books – and above all <strong>in</strong> thisone – has been borrowed partly <strong>from</strong> Trad<strong>it</strong>ion, partly <strong>from</strong> my masterAndré Barbault's teach<strong>in</strong>gs. It also derives partly <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> results <strong>of</strong>astrological research, partly <strong>from</strong> my personal experience <strong>of</strong> almost thirtyyears <strong>of</strong> activ<strong>it</strong>y; and partly <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> personal way I have arranged thosepieces <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>formation toge<strong>the</strong>r, amalgamat<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m w<strong>it</strong>h some aspects <strong>of</strong>Jungian knowledge, which has been conduct<strong>in</strong>g me s<strong>in</strong>ce <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong>my studies. I am sure that we can and we must try to weaken <strong>the</strong> negativetrans<strong>it</strong>s and to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> pos<strong>it</strong>ive ones w<strong>it</strong>h all <strong>the</strong> means at our disposal. We can do <strong>it</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>ly w<strong>it</strong>h our own knowledge; w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> enlightenment, whichis <strong>the</strong> highest form <strong>of</strong> emancipation at our disposal. Secondarily, we can use<strong>the</strong> techniques that I have already described elsewhere and that I am aboutto complete here, <strong>in</strong> this syn<strong>the</strong>tic work. The ma<strong>in</strong> operation that I am go<strong>in</strong>g to describe is what I call <strong>the</strong>exorcization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbol, or if you prefer, <strong>the</strong> r<strong>it</strong>ualization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbol."A miracle," was <strong>the</strong> cry <strong>of</strong> a great part <strong>of</strong> my students after read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>Italian translation <strong>of</strong> Schicksal als chance [Dest<strong>in</strong>y as Choice] by ThorwaldDethlefsen, published <strong>in</strong> Italy by Ed. Med<strong>it</strong>erranee. Still, much <strong>of</strong> what myGerman colleague wrote had been published previously <strong>in</strong> my books over<strong>the</strong> last two decades, w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> exception <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> part about re<strong>in</strong>carnation –someth<strong>in</strong>g I don't believe <strong>in</strong> at all.Let's start <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g, by recall<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> example that I have alreadyreported <strong>in</strong> one <strong>of</strong> my wr<strong>it</strong><strong>in</strong>gs, first described by <strong>the</strong> analytical psychologistGianfranco Tedeschi <strong>in</strong> his preface to <strong>the</strong> Italian ed<strong>it</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> Jung's study onschizophrenia (Psicologia della schiz<strong>of</strong>renia, Ed. Newton Compton Italiana). In his preface, Dr. Tedeschi talks about a Jewish student <strong>of</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e <strong>in</strong>

Rome, who had started to manifest symptoms <strong>of</strong> mental dissociation yearsbefore: he had begun to behave like a priest <strong>of</strong> ancient Jerusalem. Dr.Tedeschi told him that he himself was a Jew too, thus <strong>the</strong>y could celebrate<strong>the</strong> holy r<strong>it</strong>es toge<strong>the</strong>r on cond<strong>it</strong>ion that <strong>the</strong>y strictly followed <strong>the</strong> rules:fast<strong>in</strong>g first <strong>of</strong> all; purify<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>mselves; wear<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> right dresses; spread<strong>in</strong>g<strong>in</strong>cense; read<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> orig<strong>in</strong>al scriptures, etc. They did so for many monthsuntil <strong>the</strong> young man abruptly said, "All this is <strong>in</strong>terest<strong>in</strong>g, but – what do <strong>the</strong>Jews do today?" From <strong>the</strong>n on, hav<strong>in</strong>g rega<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong>terest for actual<strong>it</strong>y, <strong>the</strong>young man was dismissed <strong>from</strong> hosp<strong>it</strong>al to beg<strong>in</strong> his psychoanalysis w<strong>it</strong>hDr. Tedeschi – who tells <strong>the</strong> reader that <strong>the</strong> young man recoveredcompletely and eventually graduated <strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>e. The doctor hadconstellated <strong>the</strong> symbolism that was press<strong>in</strong>g <strong>from</strong> <strong>in</strong>side <strong>the</strong> patient: thisway <strong>the</strong> problem had been "exorcized".Let us consider two fur<strong>the</strong>r examples whose central characters are tw<strong>of</strong>emale clients and good friends <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e. The first one is a univers<strong>it</strong>y pr<strong>of</strong>essorw<strong>it</strong>h a vast general culture and a good knowledge <strong>of</strong> psycho astrology.Dur<strong>in</strong>g a trans<strong>it</strong> <strong>of</strong> Saturn over her natal Venus she was left by <strong>the</strong> man sheloved. She felt such a devastat<strong>in</strong>g pa<strong>in</strong> that <strong>in</strong> order to cope w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>it</strong>, <strong>in</strong> orderto deta<strong>in</strong> <strong>it</strong> somehow, she went <strong>in</strong>to mourn<strong>in</strong>g and dressed <strong>in</strong> black for onewhole year. To those who asked her <strong>the</strong> reason <strong>of</strong> such a choice she used tosay, "I've lost my love." She went on for one year, exactly <strong>the</strong> same timerequired for Saturn to pass beyond her natal Venus; <strong>the</strong>n she went out <strong>of</strong>mourn<strong>in</strong>g – back to normal life. The second case is ano<strong>the</strong>r lady pr<strong>of</strong>essor as cultured and <strong>in</strong>telligent as<strong>the</strong> former. As <strong>the</strong> trans<strong>it</strong> <strong>of</strong> Saturn on her natal Venus approached, sheasked me what she could do to avoid los<strong>in</strong>g her love. Her partner lived <strong>in</strong> adistant town; <strong>the</strong>y met on a regular basis, say once every fortnight. I advisedher to meet as rarely as possible, even fur<strong>the</strong>r: not to meet at all dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>entire com<strong>in</strong>g year. They did so. Thus Saturn "was given" what <strong>it</strong> required:sentimental mortification, subtraction <strong>of</strong> lov<strong>in</strong>g enthusiasm, temporarily death<strong>of</strong> sentiment and sex. Then Saturn passed over and everyth<strong>in</strong>g turned back<strong>the</strong> way <strong>it</strong> used to be.In both cases we can say that <strong>the</strong> given procedure was to make <strong>the</strong>"ghost" act; i.e. what <strong>in</strong> psychoanalysis we could well def<strong>in</strong>e <strong>the</strong> "technique<strong>of</strong> restra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> field". In <strong>the</strong> case described by Dr. Tedeschi <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple<strong>of</strong> identification was employed too – a Jew was <strong>the</strong> student, and a Jew was<strong>the</strong> doctor. This procedure has been <strong>in</strong>vented nei<strong>the</strong>r by me nor by Dr.Tedeschi or by Jung: <strong>it</strong> belongs to <strong>the</strong> r<strong>it</strong>es <strong>of</strong> any religion; <strong>it</strong> can be appliedvery <strong>of</strong>ten w<strong>it</strong>h excellent results; and <strong>it</strong> can be compared to <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong>

homeopathic medic<strong>in</strong>e similia similibus curantur (<strong>the</strong> similar cures <strong>the</strong> similar). Can we state that all <strong>the</strong> cases must be treated <strong>the</strong> same way? No. Theabove mentioned Thorwald Dethlefsen suggests to wear <strong>in</strong> black, to vis<strong>it</strong>cemeteries, to meet grave people and so on, <strong>in</strong> order to cope w<strong>it</strong>h a trans<strong>it</strong><strong>of</strong> Saturn, say, on your natal Sun. But my personal experience and even <strong>the</strong>teach<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>of</strong> psychoanalysis don't agree on <strong>it</strong>. In fact, <strong>in</strong> many cases onemust employ a pros<strong>the</strong>tic technique: i.e. a technique <strong>of</strong> compensation. Letme expla<strong>in</strong>. Let's say that <strong>the</strong> one who copes w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> mentioned trans<strong>it</strong> <strong>of</strong>Saturn is a native Pisces whose Sun or Moon is afflicted by an aspect <strong>of</strong>Neptune. In this case we are before a psycho labile <strong>in</strong>dividual; an extremelyfragile person; an emotional sponge who fully absorbs <strong>the</strong> atmosphere aroundhim/her. It is not wise to advise such a person to read Les Misérables byVictor Hugo and/or to associate w<strong>it</strong>h sad people. On <strong>the</strong> contrary: we'll ask him/her to meet healthy happy people andvery equilibrated persons; to watch amus<strong>in</strong>g films such as <strong>the</strong> Americancomedies; to read Wodehouse's works all <strong>the</strong> time. For we must never th<strong>in</strong>kthat everyth<strong>in</strong>g has to be read, <strong>in</strong>terpreted and developed <strong>in</strong> one directiononly. Some people react better to allopathic medic<strong>in</strong>e than to homeopathic;similarly we should use <strong>the</strong> exorcization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbol w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> strongest<strong>in</strong>dividuals and <strong>the</strong> compensatory technique w<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> weakest ones.Sometimes <strong>the</strong> two pr<strong>in</strong>ciples can be melted. In <strong>the</strong> case <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> fragile andvulnerable lady born under <strong>the</strong> Sign <strong>of</strong> Pisces, we'd advise her to f<strong>in</strong>d help<strong>in</strong> certa<strong>in</strong> medic<strong>in</strong>es used <strong>in</strong> psychiatry while spend<strong>in</strong>g a few months <strong>in</strong> adeeper sol<strong>it</strong>ude.The basic pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> exorcization <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbol is <strong>the</strong> notion <strong>of</strong>sacrifice: exactly <strong>the</strong> same concept that thousands <strong>of</strong> years ago made <strong>the</strong>Greek pastors select and sacrifice <strong>the</strong> best lamb <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir herd <strong>in</strong> order toconta<strong>in</strong> Zeus' wrath. The bottom l<strong>in</strong>e is that you have to pay your due <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>same analogical direction <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> symbol, and <strong>in</strong> an expectedly adequateextent <strong>in</strong> order to discharge <strong>the</strong> trans<strong>it</strong>. So if you are a female and Uranustrans<strong>it</strong>s on your natal Mars <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 5th House, <strong>it</strong> wouldn't be sufficient to havea dentist fill your cav<strong>it</strong>y – but <strong>it</strong> would be expectedly enough to undertakean operation and have your some-year-old uter<strong>in</strong>e fibroma removed. The ma<strong>in</strong> piece <strong>of</strong> advice that I feel like giv<strong>in</strong>g to anyone is to "anticipate"<strong>the</strong> trans<strong>it</strong>s; to "<strong>of</strong>fer <strong>the</strong> sacrifice" when <strong>the</strong> trans<strong>it</strong> is about to arrive.Ano<strong>the</strong>r extraord<strong>in</strong>ary <strong>in</strong>strument <strong>of</strong> self-defence <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> cr<strong>it</strong>ical periods –or at least a good way to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong> well-promis<strong>in</strong>g periods – is to use<strong>the</strong> Solar Returns <strong>in</strong> an "<strong>aimed</strong>" way. That is, to choose <strong>the</strong> most su<strong>it</strong>able

astral s<strong>it</strong>uation to spend your birthday w<strong>it</strong>h: i.e. <strong>the</strong> best annual sky which<strong>the</strong> horoscope <strong>of</strong> your follow<strong>in</strong>g year derives <strong>from</strong>. For many years I havebeen advis<strong>in</strong>g my clients to use this technique and I have tried <strong>it</strong> out myselfseveral times – always obta<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g excellent results.I suggest consider<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> consult<strong>in</strong>g client's general s<strong>it</strong>uation about onemonth before his/her birthday, i.e. when <strong>the</strong> previous year is com<strong>in</strong>g to anend and <strong>the</strong> astrologer is adequately updated about <strong>the</strong> facts thatcharacterized <strong>the</strong> astral map <strong>of</strong> his/her prior Return. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand, onemonth before <strong>the</strong> birthday one has got time enough to organize even a veryexotic journey. My personal technique is to cast a dozen <strong>of</strong> Solar Returns maps rang<strong>in</strong>g<strong>from</strong> Los Angeles to Tokyo scann<strong>in</strong>g all over Europe. If none <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m issu<strong>it</strong>able I explore some "extreme" terr<strong>it</strong>ories such as Siberia, New Gu<strong>in</strong>eaor Easter Island. Far<strong>the</strong>r <strong>in</strong> this book you'll f<strong>in</strong>d suggestions on <strong>the</strong> right wayto proceed, based upon practical cases.Solar ReturnsThis is a topic my heart gets <strong>in</strong>flamed w<strong>it</strong>h, because <strong>of</strong> my significant andsatisfactory experience <strong>in</strong> this field. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1970, i.e. my first year <strong>of</strong> study<strong>in</strong>gastrology, I feel I am on <strong>the</strong> same spir<strong>it</strong>ual wavelength w<strong>it</strong>h this technique.Such a "tun<strong>in</strong>g" would not develop <strong>in</strong> a fideistic way, but on <strong>the</strong> base <strong>of</strong> mypractical experience. Nowadays I wouldn't be able to analyse anybody'sastral s<strong>it</strong>uation w<strong>it</strong>hout consider<strong>in</strong>g at least three maps: <strong>the</strong> natal chart, <strong>the</strong>current Solar Return, and <strong>the</strong> SR map for <strong>the</strong> next year. W<strong>it</strong>hout <strong>the</strong> threemaps <strong>the</strong> client's s<strong>it</strong>uation would appear "bl<strong>in</strong>d" to me. In my op<strong>in</strong>ion,understand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> mean<strong>in</strong>g and function<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> a Solar Return allows you topenetrate <strong>the</strong> secrets <strong>of</strong> one year <strong>of</strong> somebody's life; <strong>it</strong> makes you read <strong>the</strong>most important and sure events one is about to face dur<strong>in</strong>g that 12-monthperiod. My first master on Solar Returns was Alexander Volgu<strong>in</strong>e, whosefundamental work I asked and obta<strong>in</strong>ed to be translated <strong>in</strong>to Italian by mypublisher Armenia. Later on I abandoned Volgu<strong>in</strong>e's method for <strong>the</strong> reasonsI expla<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> my Trattato pratico di Rivoluzioni <strong>solar</strong>i, Blue DiamondPublisher. I believe that only few and clearly def<strong>in</strong>ed elements <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> SolarReturn chart need be considered, avoid<strong>in</strong>g to burden <strong>it</strong>s analysis w<strong>it</strong>h w<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gcorrespondences and analogical mutual l<strong>in</strong>ks. I do believe that <strong>the</strong> elementsto be considered primarily are <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g ones:- Where <strong>the</strong> cusp <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Ascendant <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Return map is w<strong>it</strong>h<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Houses

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> natal chart.- Where <strong>the</strong> Sun <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Return map is w<strong>it</strong>h<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Houses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Return map.- Where a stellium <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Return map is w<strong>it</strong>h<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Houses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Return map. Then, but only after <strong>the</strong> above listed elements, one should also consider<strong>the</strong> planets <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Houses <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Return map, and a l<strong>it</strong>tle – but very l<strong>it</strong>tle – <strong>of</strong>everyth<strong>in</strong>g else. I believe that not follow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>se rules may lead you toserious oversights. The Solar Return is based on <strong>the</strong> pr<strong>in</strong>ciple <strong>of</strong> cycles. Innature we f<strong>in</strong>d, as an example, Circadian Rythms <strong>of</strong> about one day <strong>in</strong> whichcockroaches sleep or are <strong>in</strong> activ<strong>it</strong>y; not to mention <strong>the</strong> almost monthlycycles <strong>of</strong> menstruation <strong>in</strong> women. Every year <strong>the</strong> Sun goes back exactly to<strong>the</strong> same natal pos<strong>it</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> a person's map and a new year beg<strong>in</strong>s for <strong>the</strong>native, carry<strong>in</strong>g <strong>it</strong>s own special features – <strong>the</strong> features marked by <strong>the</strong> native'sSolar chart, which <strong>the</strong> astrologer casts for that moment and that place.Accord<strong>in</strong>g to some colleagues <strong>of</strong> m<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong> Solar Return map should becast for <strong>the</strong> native's birthplace, not for <strong>the</strong> one <strong>the</strong> native actually is <strong>in</strong> when<strong>the</strong> Return takes place. This is nonsense both <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>the</strong>oretical and <strong>from</strong><strong>the</strong> demonstrative po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong> view. You can read about that <strong>in</strong> my a.m. Trattato. In this chapter I would liketo describe one only example that demonstrates <strong>the</strong> absurd<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> mycolleagues' view. Let us consider Mata Hari's astral s<strong>it</strong>uation. The well knownDutch spy was sentenced to death by <strong>the</strong> French Government dur<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>WWI. I already exposed this case years ago ask<strong>in</strong>g my colleagues tocomment on <strong>it</strong>: hav<strong>in</strong>g received no remark at all I'm propos<strong>in</strong>g <strong>it</strong> once aga<strong>in</strong>.The stunn<strong>in</strong>g spy-dancer-prost<strong>it</strong>ute was born <strong>in</strong> Leeuwarden on <strong>the</strong> 7th <strong>of</strong>August 1876 at 1 p.m. We'll consider one episode <strong>of</strong> her life for <strong>it</strong>s crystall<strong>in</strong>ecleanness, whatever be <strong>the</strong> reconstruction that any <strong>of</strong> you can make <strong>of</strong> <strong>it</strong>.The astrologers claim<strong>in</strong>g that Solar Returns are to be cast for <strong>the</strong> birthplace(<strong>in</strong>stead <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> actual place <strong>of</strong> station <strong>of</strong> that moment) shall comm<strong>it</strong> <strong>the</strong>mselvesand cry aloud to persuade those who disagree. Let's see <strong>the</strong>n. Beforebecom<strong>in</strong>g a spion and a prost<strong>it</strong>ute, Mata Hari, who was already an amaz<strong>in</strong>gdancer, had been married to an <strong>of</strong>ficial, major MacLeod, who took herw<strong>it</strong>h him to Indonesia, precisely to Medan. There <strong>in</strong> Medan dest<strong>in</strong>y stroke her tremendously on <strong>the</strong> 27th <strong>of</strong> June1899. A native servant poisoned her two sons. One <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, Norman, diedafter appall<strong>in</strong>g suffer<strong>in</strong>gs. Hence we have got all <strong>the</strong> ideal cond<strong>it</strong>ions to make

an accurate comparison. Mata Hari's date <strong>of</strong> birth is sure – all her horoscopeconfirms <strong>it</strong>; we know <strong>the</strong> precise date <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> event we are talk<strong>in</strong>g about; andgeographically speak<strong>in</strong>g, Leeuwarden and Medan are very distant places. So what do we observe <strong>in</strong> Mata Hari's Solar Return map <strong>of</strong> 1898-1899drawn for her birthplace, Leeuwarden? Noth<strong>in</strong>g, virtually noth<strong>in</strong>g that mayforetell her tragedy – start<strong>in</strong>g <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> SR Ascendant <strong>in</strong> her natal 4th House, which is miles away <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong> peak events we are exam<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. Then we seean empty, <strong>in</strong>significant 5th House.Let us consider what her SR map <strong>of</strong> 1898-99 tells us if we draw <strong>it</strong> forMedan, i.e. <strong>the</strong> place where <strong>the</strong> family actually was at <strong>the</strong> moment <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>murder. In what natal House do you th<strong>in</strong>k <strong>the</strong> Ascendant <strong>of</strong> SR is?Precisely: <strong>in</strong> her natal 8th House. Weren't <strong>it</strong> enough, we also f<strong>in</strong>d Uranus<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 5th House while Mars and Pluto, <strong>the</strong> two dispos<strong>it</strong>ors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> 5thHouse, are conjunct <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> 12th House. If <strong>the</strong>y tell you that <strong>the</strong>y still doubt,<strong>the</strong>y simply lie.Aimed Solar ReturnsI shaped this expression myself to <strong>in</strong>dicate <strong>the</strong> possibil<strong>it</strong>y for whoever togo away on <strong>the</strong> day <strong>of</strong> his/her own anniversary <strong>in</strong> order to take advantage<strong>of</strong> a birthday astral s<strong>it</strong>uation better than <strong>the</strong> one <strong>the</strong>y would experience if<strong>the</strong>y rema<strong>in</strong>ed on <strong>the</strong>ir own place <strong>of</strong> birth. In <strong>the</strong> January 1999 issue <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>Italian magaz<strong>in</strong>e Sirio my colleague Grazia Bordoni published an anthology<strong>of</strong> declarations about <strong>the</strong> Aimed <strong>solar</strong> <strong>returns</strong>. At <strong>the</strong> end <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> article myfriend Grazia was sad to <strong>in</strong>form me that I had been <strong>the</strong> only one whoexpressed <strong>the</strong> confidence that Solar Return maps are to be cast for <strong>the</strong>place where you spend your birthday – not for your birthplace.Actually, this lent me a hand. In fact, when I began claim<strong>in</strong>g <strong>it</strong> w<strong>it</strong>hconviction thirty-one years ago, I had to face <strong>the</strong> oppos<strong>it</strong>e, <strong>of</strong>ten fierceop<strong>in</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> overwhelm<strong>in</strong>g major<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> my colleagues. They even deridedme for this, harshly and openly cr<strong>it</strong>iciz<strong>in</strong>g my custom <strong>of</strong> suggest<strong>in</strong>g AimedSolar Returns to my clients. Later on, as my works were published <strong>in</strong>magaz<strong>in</strong>es and books, grow<strong>in</strong>g legions <strong>of</strong> readers embraced <strong>the</strong>se studies,swell<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ranks <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> persuaded followers <strong>of</strong> this technique; <strong>in</strong> order todo that, some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m even disobeyed precise orders <strong>of</strong> censorship <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>irown masters – my colleagues. Today an op<strong>in</strong>ion poll would show that <strong>the</strong>"base", even those belong<strong>in</strong>g to schools o<strong>the</strong>r than m<strong>in</strong>e, believes – <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>great major<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong> cases – <strong>in</strong> Solar Returns and <strong>in</strong> Aimed Solar Returns. On <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r hand a grow<strong>in</strong>g number <strong>of</strong> Pharisees, who have repeatedly

affirmed <strong>the</strong>ir own scepticism on this topic until <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r day, has suddenlybegun to assert that <strong>the</strong>y have always been persuaded <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> valid<strong>it</strong>y <strong>of</strong>ASR's; and that this matter is so evident that <strong>it</strong> is not even worth mention<strong>in</strong>g.This is <strong>the</strong> reason why I am particularly glad for <strong>the</strong> testimonials publishedon <strong>the</strong> a.m. issue <strong>of</strong> Sirio. Why have I been <strong>the</strong> first one to embark on this k<strong>in</strong>d <strong>of</strong> study w<strong>it</strong>h sucha great fervour – at least compared to my colleagues? There are exactlytwo reasons. To study an Aimed Solar Return w<strong>it</strong>h all <strong>the</strong> pert<strong>in</strong>ent chartsand <strong>the</strong> calculation required to cast each <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>m, you must have adequatetechnical means at your disposal. In <strong>the</strong> early 1970s I already used t<strong>in</strong>yHewlett-Packard pocket computers – <strong>the</strong> real programmable ancestors <strong>of</strong>Personal Computer. W<strong>it</strong>h <strong>the</strong> help <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essionals on <strong>in</strong>formatics, on suchmach<strong>in</strong>es I elaborated programs that took full care <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> long and laboriouscalculations necessary to SR's.Today's program Molriv <strong>of</strong> ASTRAL is one <strong>of</strong> those l<strong>it</strong>tle jewels: <strong>it</strong> scans<strong>the</strong> entire terrestrial surface <strong>in</strong> a few m<strong>in</strong>utes. The o<strong>the</strong>r reason that favouredme very much <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> study <strong>of</strong> Aimed Solar Returns is that, differ<strong>in</strong>g <strong>from</strong> <strong>the</strong>times <strong>of</strong> Alexander Volgu<strong>in</strong>e, nowadays whoever wants to spend a birthday<strong>in</strong> New York C<strong>it</strong>y – now as well as twenty years ago – must not sell his/herown house away any longer, for you can afford <strong>it</strong> for less than 1,000,000Italian Liras.I have been "send<strong>in</strong>g" hundreds <strong>of</strong> people (more than 25,000<strong>in</strong>dividuals as on January 2013) to spend <strong>the</strong>ir birthdays abroad everyyear for 43 years. The balance I have drawn up is astonish<strong>in</strong>gly pos<strong>it</strong>ive, as you can read <strong>in</strong>my bookTrattato pratico di Rivoluzioni <strong>solar</strong>i, Blue Diamond Publisher.Ma<strong>in</strong> author’s bibliography- Ciro Discepolo, Astrologia applicata [Applied astrology], Armenia,Milan, 1988, 294 pages.- Ciro Discepolo, Tra<strong>it</strong>é complet d’<strong>in</strong>térpretation des trans<strong>it</strong>s et desrévolutions solaires en astrologie, Éd<strong>it</strong>ions Trad<strong>it</strong>ionnelles, 2001, 502 pages.- Ciro Discepolo, A Few Facts on Aimed Birthdays, Ricerca ’90, 2001,104 pages.- Luigi Galli and Ciro Discepolo, Geographical Atlas for <strong>the</strong> Solar
