SUMMARY OF RESEARCH ACTIVITIES – DIVISION OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING The primary objectives of the Division of Biomedical Engineering are to provide for the training of graduate students and to foster and coordinate interdisciplinary research in the area of biomedical engineering. In fulfilling these objectives, the Division administers the degree programs of M.Eng. (non-thesis Master), M.Sc., and Ph.D. in the College of Graduate Studies and Research and has a membership that includes faculty members from the Colleges of Engineering, Medicine, Kinesiology, Arts and Science, and the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. There were a total of 54 students enrolled in the Division including 21 Ph.D. students, 28 M.Sc. students, 3 M.Eng. students, and 2 PGD students as of June 30, 2011. Several engineering graduate students, who are registered in other departments, are doing research in the area of biomedical engineering under the supervision of members of the Biomedical Division. In addition, fourth year undergraduate students in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering are often involved in projects in the biomedical engineering area. Research projects of current interest include many areas within both engineering and life sciences. Within engineering, these include cognitive science and health, bioinformatics, biomaterials, biomechanics, biological control systems, signal processing, pattern recognition, ultrasound imaging, image processing, bioengineering, biosensors, bio-actuators, bio-mechatronics, modeling, electroradiography, expert systems, tissue engineering, and artificial neural networks. Within the life sciences, research projects include ultrasonography, cardiology, neurophysiology, electroradiography, and magnetic resonance imaging. In addition, several members of the Division are involved with the Biomedical Imaging and Therapy Beamline currently under construction at the Canadian Light Source. W.J.
