EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Research in the College of Engineering continues to flourish, ensuring that we maintain our position as one of the top ten engineering research colleges in Canada. This Research Report is a detailed account of the faculty and other research personnel, research funding, graduate students and research publications in the College of Engineering. It has been an annual publication of the College for more than 20 years. The College is actively engaged in research in its constituent departments of Chemical and Biological, Civil and Geological, Electrical and Computer, and Mechanical Engineering. Engineering related research is also conducted in Engineering Physics within the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics. In addition, there are two research divisions within the College involved in interdisciplinary research; the Divisions of Biomedical Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The College of Engineering remains committed to its traditional strong emphasis on research performance and the training of graduate students and other research personnel. Research continues to be impressive again this year according to all indicators. In our constituent departments, there were close to 433 graduate students enrolled during the report period of which 153 (35%) were PhD students. Females made up nearly a quarter of our student body (28%). Seventy seven graduate students were awarded their degrees. A total of 508 scientific articles were published and presented. Faculty in Physics and Engineering Physics and their 58 graduate students published and presented another 207 scientific articles in total. The Divisions of Environmental Engineering and Biomedical Engineering together accounted for 63 of our graduate student population. Research funding to the constituent Departments was $9.4 M which was augmented by an additional $3.2 M from the Physics and Engineering Physics Department. Collaborative research and the many synergies that it offers has always been a cornerstone of research in the College of Engineering. This year was no exception. For example, 127 of our graduate students were co-supervised. Some of the research projects involved close collaborations with some 43 major industrial sponsors and partners. The Research Report consists of four main parts. Research Theme Areas which represent our areas of research strength and focus are featured in Part I. Part II includes information regarding faculty and staff, research activities, graduate students, grants and contracts, degrees awarded, publications, and honours and awards in each department or division. The details of graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and visiting scholars are presented in Part III, whereas Part IV contains a detailed list of all publications by department and division.
