2008 XTERRA WINTER WORLDS IN REVIEWMARCH 8, 2008 – Brian Smith, 32, of Gunnison, Coloradojolted past Josiah Middaugh, 29, of Vail, CO, less than 20meters from the finish line to win the inaugural XTERRAWinter World Championship in dramatic fashion atSnowbasin Resort this afternoon. After nearly two hours of grueling racing action thatincluded mountain biking, snowshoeing, running and skimountaineering in snow flurries at 6,000+ feet elevation,Smith pulled off a jaw-dropping come-from-behind victoryby a little more than one-second in 1:58:29.92 (withMiddaugh right behind in 1:58:31.21).“I didn’t think I could do it until four gates before the finishand I saw Josiah snow plowing,” said an exuberant Smith.“I’ve been alpine racing since the third grade so that laststretch was my cup of tea.”Spectators at the finish line remarked that it was the mostunbelievable 13 seconds of racing – in any sport – they hadever seen.“I had goose bumps, it was unreal,” said Mike Caldwell ofOgden, UT. “That’s about as pure and epic a sportingmoment as I’ve ever witnessed.”It went something like this – 200 yards of downhill skiingthrough eight gates – all viewable from the main plaza atSnowbasin. Middaugh comes into sight of the spectatorsand falls rounding the first gate. At this point all he needs todo is stay upright and the race is his. He picks himself upand slowly rounds the next two gates only to fall on his backagain, this time sliding down the hill. As Middaugh gets upand going again Smith, fueled by years of alpine racing anda natural competitive fire, emerges from the tree line like aman possessed. Seconds later and with just two gates togo Smith zooms past Middaugh on the inside and speedsacross the finish line arms raised high.‘I did everything I could do,” said Middaugh. “I thought if Icould make all those gates without falling then maybe I’d beok but I was lying on my back up there half way down.”Middaugh, who is one of the most decorated winter athletesin the U.S. - went out onto the fourth and final stage – theski mountaineering leg featuring 2,200 feet of climbing –with a two minute lead by virtue of crushing the first threestages (he had the fastest run, second best snowshoe, andthird best bike split).Alas, it came down to equipment. Middaugh was usingNordic skis (aka skate skis) that are not suited for steepdownhills while behind him Smith slipped into a randonneeski set-up better suited for both climbing and descending.“If it wasn’t about equipment, Josiah would’ve blown awaythe whole field,” said Smith. “Even on nordic skis I didn’tcatch him until the end. The guy is so strong, just amachine.”Even more amazing is that two-time Winter Triathlon WorldChamp and 2005 XTERRA Off-Road Triathlon WorldChamp Nicolas Lebrun almost made the whole Brian-Josiahmoment a mute point. Lebrun was in the lead just minutesaway from his own crowning moment when he took one ofthe final turns too fast, lost control, one of his skis, and wenttumbling 30 feet down the mountain. He still finished in thirdjust 11 seconds behind Smith.“It was my fault,” said Lebrun. “All I needed to do was justhang on and race safe but I caught an edge and wentdown.”Mike Kloser and Michael Tobin of the world’s winningestadventure racing team came in fourth and fifth, respectively.“Even when I was suffering I was thinking this was a coolevent,” said Tobin. “The snowshoe was fabulous, runningthrough the woods like that was really neat and then at thetop of the skinning, the wind was blowing and you were in ablizzard, it felt like you were way up there.”At the beginning of the race Smith and Kloser used theirwinter tri experience biking on the snow to pull into the earlylead. Once on the snowshoe, Greg Krause (the 2004 U.S.Snowshoe National Champ) and Middaugh put the hurt onthe field and pulled ahead. The pair did more of the sameon the run and headed into the ski more than two minutesup. Kloser and Lebrun had the fastest times up-and-downthe mountain to get back into the race, but ultimately it wasSmith that put all the pieces together.“It was a blast, just tons of fun,” smiled Smith.20

2008 XTERRA WINTER WORLDS IN REVIEW“This mountain is incredible and the course is great, perfectfor summer and winter XTERRA.”Kloser, who at 48-years-young just won the Winter TriathlonU.S. Championship and has traveled across the world winningraces for the better part of two decades, echoed thatsentiment. “Snowbasin and XTERRA Winter is a fantasticfit. Great venue, and the guys figured out a great course.”ANDERSON LEADS THE MOM-SQUADTalk about Mommy power - the top four women across thefinish line all gave birth in the last year-and-a-half, and SariAnderson, 29, of Glenwood Springs, CO – with an eightmonth-oldin tow – led the charge.Anderson staged perhaps the most unlikely comeback ofthe afternoon by making up more than two minutes in thefinal stage to jump from third-to-first with a winning time of2:29:47.“I can’t think of much that I’ve done individually that’s betterthan this,” said Anderson.snowshoe and run splits. She headed out on the ski leg insecond place behind Dussault but couldn’t muster enoughleg strength to pull her heavy rig up the hill and eventuallyfinished 7th among pro women.Dussault held off everyone but Anderson for second whileLisa Isom (who has an 18-month-old and 6-year-old) wassteady throughout and worked her way into third by the endof the day. Jenny Tobin, who has the youngest of the kids(a 7-month old along with a three-year-old), used a pair ofstellar runs and a solid ski to finish in fourth.SULLIVAN, COLONNA WIN AMATEUR TITLESEric Sullivan (Gunnison, CO) won the men’s amateur race(placing 7th overall in 2:10:51) and Caroline Colonna (Taos,NM) won the women’s amateur overall (placing 5th overallin 2:52:56). Drew Casselberry of Ogden, UT - a SnowbasinResort staffer - was the top local finisher placing 9th overall(2nd amateur) in 2:21:23. Rachel Cieslewicz of Salt LakeCity was the fastest local female, winning the 20-29 division(11th overall female) in 3:39:56.What made the move so remarkable was who she caught –none other than 8-time U.S. National XC Ski Champion and2006 Winter Olympian Rebecca Dussault (who has a 13-month old and 6-year-old).“It was really a pleasure racing here today and the crowdreally kept me going. Each time I came into transition theymade me feel like I could do another leg, the fans weregreat,” said Dussault.Just like in the men’s race, however, it was all about theskis. Anderson, who is a member of that same phenomenalTeam Nike adventure racing squad with Tobin and Kloser, was on the same “rando rig” that Smith was using whileDussault pulled a much heavier telemark set up themountain. The race started with Dussault way out front, putting fourminutes on Anderson in the bike leg and 10 minutes on KeriNelson. Nelson, the North American Snowshoe and WinterTriathlon National Champ last year, worked her way backinto the race and all the way up to the front with the fastestArmin Beyrich from Germanywon the 70+ Division.21

2009 XTERRA WINTER EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPFormer XTERRA World Champ and two-time ITU Winter Triathlon World Champ Nicolas Lebrun served as the racedirector for the inaugural XTERRA Winter European Championship that was held January 17 in Chabanon, France.Styled after the first-of-its-kind XTERRA Winter Worlds format (where Lebrunfinished 3rd last year, just 10 seconds off the pace set by race victor BrianSmith) that debuted in Utah in March 2008, the race combined a 10kmmountain bike with 5km snowshoe, 5km trail run, and 8km mountaineeringsegments (in that order). The race site was nestled in the heart of "Vallee de la Blanche", an intimatefamily-size resort in the sunny south French Alps between Provence andGrenoble. In addition to the 5,000 euro prize purse for professionals, thewinner of each age group earned free entry into the XTERRA Winter WorldChampionship at Snowbasin Resort in Utah, and five representatives from theEuropean race are headed to Utah, including women’s champ Myriam Guillot.Race Recap: Jeremie Gachet and Myriam Guillot, both from France, won theinaugural XTERRA Winter European Championship at Chabanon in thesouthern French Alps in January.JEREMIEGachet, a former junior Winter Tri World Champ, led from start to finish andcrossed the line exactly six minutes ahead of Swiss Othmar Brugger.“When I realized I was stronger on the bike than the rest of the field I decidedto put the pressure on my opponents taking the lead early in the race. But Irealized the first place was not that comfortable and I have been looking backto see if someone was coming back for the rest of the race”.In the women’s race Guillot, a world-class adventure racer, put a ton of time(more than 13 minutes) between herself and former Olympic triathlete SybilleMatter from Switzerland. Two-time French national winter triathlon championJulie Arnaud placed third.“I had no idea if I could be competitive in such a race” said Guillot. “I am usedto adventure races which are not that fast but I was happily surprised to see Iwas in front during the run. I always expected someone to come from behindand pass me on the bike, & then during the snowshoe. Only during the skisection did I realize I could win this race when I saw the gap I had.”MYRIAMTOP 3 PRO MEN: Jeremie Gachet (1:50:14), Othmar Brugger (1:56:14), Nicolas Mazetier(2:02:00). THE XTERRA PLANETAt the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more thanjust a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes ofthe competitors and an unwavering feeling thatXTERRA was destined to become a lifestyleAnd look at what XTERRA has become- The first piece of expansion started with moreraces, a lot more. From one to 100+ in 15 countriesin a 12-year span including a 60-stop America Tourfor amateurs and a full-blown European Tour.- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them startedtowards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus thechance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.- We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garnerthe attention of national and international media.- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize hundreds of amateur regional championsand dozens of amateur national champions, plus relay team and collegiate national champs, XTERRA Trail RunSeries, National and World Champs, and XTERRA Winter World Champions.- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running andbike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over theworld with inspiring images of fun activities in great places. We also launched our very own 24/7 web TV network,www.xterra.tv, where viewers can watch our shows on demand for free.- We became consumer friendly with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition.- With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profitspecifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Trail Running Series, and thisyear there are more than 50 5k, 10k, and 21k runs reaching into 15 U.S. States and seven countries.- We expanded on the XTERRA Winter format by adding a European Winter race, and have plans to add qualifyingevents for Utah’s Winter Worlds in the U.S. in the coming years.- We created a platform for our dog lovers with the Breeder’s Choice XTERRA K9 Challenge.- We launched the XTERRA Eco Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to thecommunities that host us.- And XTERRA is only getting better...23
