XTERRA TRAIL RUN NATIONALS RACE PREVIEWFitting for a place with hundreds of running trails, hundredsof running tales can be found in Bend, Oregon, on Sept. 18.The XTERRA Trail Run National Championship returns toBend for the third consecutive year, and runners fromacross America – and beyond – will gather in CentralOregon for the XTERRA experience. This year’s field features more than 500 runnersrepresenting 23 states. Some are teachers, some arestudents; some are laborers, some are retired; some areexperts, some are beginners. All are trail runners. And although it is considered a national championshipevent, it has some international flavor as well, with runnersfrom Canada, France, Japan and New Zealandparticipating.Every runner seemingly has a tale to tell, ranging from elitecontenders looking to dethrone defending champion MaxKing, to everyday runners looking to experience Bend’spristine trails for the first time.In 2010, 10 different regions across the nation hosted anXTERRA Trail Run Series: Alabama, Northern California,Southern California, Georgia, Long Island, North Carolina,Ohio, Philadelphia, South Carolina and Texas. All 10regions will be represented at Bend, including more than 25age-group regional champions aiming to become nationalchampions in 2010.Oregon does not host an XTERRA Trail Run Series, but theBeaver State certainly has its share of runners participatingin the XTERRA Nationals. It all starts with the 30-year-old Max King, who is the twotimedefending national and world champion of XTERRATrail Running. He works as a bio-chemical engineer right inBend, so the trails of Central Oregon serve as his trainingbase. Coincidence or not, King also happens to be one ofthe fastest trail runners in the world. He won last year’sXTERRA Nationals at Bend with a time of 1 hour, 6 minutes,46 seconds, on the 21-kilometer course. He finished morethan six minutes ahead of his closest competition – anastonishing margin when considering the depth of the field.King is again the overwhelming favorite, but there are manyother contenders. An intriguing entry is Fujio Miyachi fromJapan. He placed fifth at the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship race in Hawaii last year, and this will be hisfirst try at Bend.Greg Mitchell from nearby McMinnville, Justin Thomas fromNevada, California runners Sean Kievning and ScottDunlap, and Pennsylvania runners Derek Schultz and BrentWright are all fast. How fast they are against the pace ofKing on Sept. 18 remains to be seen. The women’s field appears to be far less predictable.Defending champion Lauren Fleshman of Eugene, Oregon,is questionable to enter the XTERRA Nationals this yeardue to a scheduling conflict. Also, Susannah Beck of Mainewill not enter the 2010 race. Beck won the women’snational title in 2008, and placed second to Fleshman lastyear. With that said, a new women’s champion could emerge in2010. Leading the way is another elite runner from Bend –Kami Semick. She placed second in the women’s field atthe 2008 XTERRA Nationals, and third last year. If she is tobreak through this year, she will have to be faster thanseveral other top female contenders from Bend, includingKatie Caba, Stephanie Howe and Pam Bradbury. RachelCieslewicz of Utah and Claudia Spooner of Texas are alsoconsidered contenders. In addition to the overall elite champs, the XTERRA TrailRun National Championship will crown age-group nationalchamps. The gamut of contenders ranges from 16-year-oldTexas high school student Dylan Johnson to 85-year-oldJohn Keston, who transformed from a singer/actor to runnerextraordinaire in his senior years.7Max King

2009 XTERRA TRAIL RUN NATIONALS REVIEWBend, OR (September 13, 2009) A pair of professionalrunners from the Beaver State – 29-year-old Max King and27-year-old Lauren Fleshman - dominated the men’s andwomen’s races at the XTERRA Trail Run NationalChampionship half-marathon in Bend, Oregon.Lauren Fleshman from Eugene (originally from California) isa bona-fide superstar – a 5-time NCAA Champion and15-time All-American at Stanford University, 3-time Olympictrials qualifier, owner of a 14:58 5k, and a member of theNike Oregon Track Club Elite team.King, a Bend local, won in 1:06:46, a full six minutes aheadof runner-up Ben Bruce (1:12:58) and more than a minutefaster than his own record time from last year's race.Fleshman won in 1:19:10, placed 5th overall, and finishedmore than two minutes ahead of the women’s runner-upand last year’s National Champ, Susannah Beck. The victory is King’s third straight XTERRA Trail RunningChampionship win (he also won Nationals and Worlds lastyear) and it also marks the third straight time Bruce hasfinished 2nd.“Ben (Bruce) went out really hard from the gun so it set agood pace for me, and from there I just tried to go reallyhard the whole time and be smooth through the technicalsections,” said King, a former steeplechase All-American atCornell University.Bruce was able to stay with King through about the first 2.5miles but by mile five King had put a minute on Bruce andby the 8-mile turnaround he was leading by nearly two-anda-halfminutes. That’s about when the trail gets truly technical, zigzagging on narrow singletrack along the river, andwhere King put even more distance on his long-time rival."Max was just in great form today and he pulled away fromme pretty early," said Bruce, a member of the prestigiousNike Oregon Track Club Elite team. “By about mile six hewas gone and I looked back and didn’t see anyone behindme so I just settled in, relaxed, and had a good time.”Enjoying the trails and this "Central Oregon mountain townthat has it all" was a common theme, especially from thelarge collection of out-of-state runners.“It was an awesome course, just beautiful,” said RichardBurgunder, a 30-year-old from Astoria, New York. “Thevenue is amazing and the river trail is epic. Plus, thepeople in Bend are awesome and the spectators that linedthe course were so supportive. There were a couple guyson bikes that rode alongside me for a little bit and reallymotivated me. It was neat, a real breath of fresh air.”22“It was a tough course, my best distances are the mile and5k so this is pretty long for me, and I’ll run this distance fora long run once a week but I never try to run it hard and Inever try to run over crazy rocks and roots too often so itwas fun just letting it rip and hanging it all out there andrunning with some really good trail runners,” said Fleshman(pictured), who missed the Olympics by one spot in 2008.The XTERRA Trail Run National Championship was the lastrace in a 50-stop U.S. Tour that hosts races in 15 states. There were 25 regional series champions from SouthernCalifornia to Georgia, Virginia and beyond that took part, and here’s a look at the 2009 National Champs:Men Name Hometown Time15-19 Dmitry Ponder Prineville, OR 1:37:4020-24 Sean Stafford Reno, NV 1:22:0125-29 * Max King Bend, OR 1:06:4630-34 Andy Martin Bend, OR 1:15:0735-39 Mark Robins Aumsville, OR 1:25:1240-44 Scott Dunlap Woodside, CA 1:23:0945-49 Jim Bendis Palm Springs, CA 1:27:2450-54 Jeff Spangler Bend, OR 1:27:1555-59 Dave Webster Bend, OR 1:28:1460-64 Kenneth Geljack Bristol, IN 1:52:5265-69 Jerry Graham Spokane, WA 1:41:2875-79 * Don Hildebrand Sisters, OR 2:56:0380+ Charles Hoover Bend, OR 3:57:04Women Name Hometown Time15-19 Kristen Reichardt Foresthill, CA 1:58:5320-24 Kristiann Vlieger Sunnyside, WA 1:47:4125-29 Lauren Fleshman Eugene, OR 1:19:1030-34 Rachel Cieslewicz Salt Lake City, UT 1:31:1835-39 * Katie Caba Bend, OR 1:26:5840-44 Susannah Beck Brunswick, MA 1:21:3745-49 Tawnie McDonald Bend, OR 1:39:2150-54 Sue Dougherty Bend, OR 1:50:2055-59 Suzanne Ray Medford, OR 1:37:5560-64 * Jessie Stratton Redding, CA 2:11:2265-69 * Amy Galbraith Venice, CA 2:44:01* Repeat Champions

After just winning a six-day 125 mile racethrough the Rockies earlier this month and coming in secondat the 2008 World Mountain Running Championshiplast weekend, King was able to use his hometown advantageto edge out steeplechase star Ben Bruce, 26, ofEugene, Oregon by just over a minute. Ryan Bak, 27, alsofrom Eugene and King’s teammate on the 2008 USA WorldCross Country Team, took third in 1:09:41.“When I spoke to Ryan, he said he was just coming to dothe race for fun. Both he and Ben entered the race at thelast minute, but I knew they would be tough competition”King said.Being from Bend, King was familiar with the course and wasable to run part of the upper track last night giving him agood feel for the twists and turns. “I love to run a course withtight curves. It might be because of my low center ofgravity” he joked. It was a close race for the first section, but at mile 3 Max took the lead and never looked back. When talking to Bruce and Bak, they said that as primarilytrack racers, “The course was more technical than theywere used to. Max was able to take the sharp turns andreally open up his lead.”“It’s a great course and nice to show all these runners fromout of town what we have here in Bend and how you can gofrom this really cool downtown-type setting to forestedsingle track in just miles,” said King. “Today was beautifulin Bend, the trails weren’t dusty, just perfect. Bend is reallya great place for XTERRA to be, and I think that showedtoday.”In the women’s race it was marathon specialist SusannahBeck, 40, who took home the women’s top prize with hertime of 1:23:07. This Eugene native “duked it out” for firstplace with Bend local Kami Semick, 42, who finished just 19seconds later. These two ultra trail runners battled eachother just six weeks ago at the USATF 50 Mile TrailChampionship in Crystal Mountain, Washington where Beckand Semick also took the first and second place. This morning, it was an all out tug of war as Beck took thelead from the start giving way to Semick at mile six, andthen regaining the lead at mile ten to take the women’s title.2008 World Mountain Running Champion Lisa Nye, 40, ofBend, who was under the weather and only made it to therace by her children’s urging, came in third at 1:25:11.2008 NATIONAL CHAMPSMen Name Hometown Time15 - 19 Eddie Lacy Bend, OR 1:48:2020 - 24 Joseph Gray Lakewood, WA 1:13:5325 - 29 Max King Bend, OR 1:08:0130 - 34 Rich Skorczewski Portland, OR 1:15:0135 - 39 Richard Bolt Portland, OR 1:15:3240 - 44 Mark Ryan Redmond, OR 1:19:2145 - 49 Bernie Boettcher Silt, CO 1:16:1650 - 54 2 Kevin Tuck Salt Lake City, UT 1:21:5355 - 59 Don Morrison Brandywine, PA 1:36:1860 - 64 Phil Rossi Lake Oswego, OR 1:40:0665 - 69 Steven Humphrey Reno, NV 1:57:4875 - 79 Don Hildebrand Sisters, OR 2:33:1480+ John Keston Sunriver, OR 2:19:16Women Name Hometown Time15 - 19 Amanda Root Bend, OR 1:59:3620 - 24 Ixel Sanchez Ashland, OR 1:33:3125 - 29 Jenn Shelton Ashland, OR 1:30:0430 - 34 Holly Hight Wilsonville, OR 1:32:3035 - 39 Katie Caba Bend, OR 1:25:1840 - 44 Susannah Beck Eugene, OR 1:23:0745 - 49 Jodi Ruby La Verne, CA 1:37:0850 - 54 Maureen Schlerf Bend, OR 2:01:2255 - 59 Leah Whipple Kimberton, PA 1:47:2660 - 64 Jessie Stratton Redding, CA 2:04:0565 - 69 Amy Galbraith Venice, CA 2:21:3523

XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING SERIES OVERVIEWAt the heart of XTERRA is the fundamental idea of puttingon great races in epic places with friendly faces. Prettysimple, really, and it’s a formula that has proven successfulover the years with off-road triathlons. That samephilosophy is being used to grow the XTERRA Trail RunSeries. Now in its sixth year as a stand-alone set of races outsideof the off-road triathlon circuit, the XTERRA Trail Run Seriesboasts more than 60 races in 15 states and severalcountries, giving runners the opportunity to chase trailsaround the world literally. In 2010, 10 regions across the United States hosted anXTERRA Trail Run Series: Alabama, Northern California,Southern California, Georgia, Long Island, North Carolina,Ohio, Philadelphia, South Carolina and Texas. There werealso races (but not series) in New Hampshire, Virginia,Nevada, and Utah.Several other regions, including Arizona, Colorado andFlorida, are expected to join in 2011. What’s more, international XTERRA trail runs were staged in South Africa,Saipan, Portugal, New Zealand, Brazil and Japan in 2010.XTERRA’s main focus is on the off-road half-marathondistance trail run, or what XTERRA calls an “Xduro.” Whenasked about the paradigm shift(XTERRA Trail Runs used tobe mostly 5km and 10km runs), Tom Kiely, CEO ofXTERRA, explained that “after a decade of producing trailruns alongside our XTERRA off-road triathlons we learnedthat our audience wanted a bigger challenge than a 10k.What the market told us was to create a series of halfmarathonsthat have a physical challenge parallel to that ofa road marathon, but with Mother Nature along for the ride.”Two significant races, both staged in truly stunningadventure destinations, were added to the lineup in 2008,and remain the crown jewels of the XTERRA Trail RunSeries: the XTERRA Trail Run National Championship atBend, Oregon, and the XTERRA Trail Run WorldChampionship at Kualoa Ranch, Oahu, Hawaii. Thenational championship race is traditionally held inSeptember, with the world championship race in December.“The U.S. Trail Run Series is the fastest-growing segment ofXTERRA and the National Championship race is turninginto a really big deal,” said Kiely. “We think Bend is an24XTERRA Trail RunningWorld Championship atKualoa Ranchamazing place to visit and explore, and an ideal venue forthe last race in the U.S. series.”The age-group winners from each respective region aroundthe country receive free entry to the National Championship, setting up a showdown of champions in Bend.Following Nationals, runners can say aloha! The XTERRATrail Running World Championship at Kualoa Ranch kicksoff the “greatest week of running on Earth,” as it is held theweekend prior to the Honolulu Marathon. The XTERRAWorlds offers $10,000 in prize money, and the top trailrunners from America, South Africa, New Zealand, theCzech Republic, Germany, Italy, and Japan are expected tocome join in the adventure. The site at Kualoa Ranch on the northeastern side of Oahuis nothing short of magical. Arguably the most stunninglandscape in Hawaii, the 4,000 acre working cattle ranchhas been the setting for major motion productions such asJurassic Park, Godzilla and LOST. Lightweight XTERRA ShoesDesigned to Help Athletes StalkTheir On-Course PreyXTERRAGEAR.COM NEWSTJ Gray — one of the designers ofXTERRA’s new line of footwear andapparel — stood at the finish line of theXTERRA World Championship in Mauiin October 2008. While many of thecompetitors lay in bed the night beforecounting sheep in anticipation of therace, that afternoon Gray was countingshoes.Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe.As athletes poured down from thelower slopes of Mount Haleakala from their nearly sevenmiletrail run over roots, rocks and ravines, Gray and Browncouldn’t believe their eyes. “Maybe one in 100 was a trailrunner,” said Brown, who along with partner Gray have alsodeveloped shoes for Nike, adidas and Salomon. “Theywere all sacrificing stability for less weight.”They returned to the drawing board, determined to makeXTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail runningshoe on the market. With four months until the launch of theshoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City, designs were tweaked, materials tested — including aunique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefootand a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel. But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come. After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, amolding model never before seen in the category wascreated. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole, replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of twolayers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfortand stability while taking away weight. The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightesttrail runners ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces formen, 9.5 for women. With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Grayand Brown began to research every movement taken on atrail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degreedirectional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water, the balanced gripped-toe run across a log.As they were going for a timed run in the woods near theirstudios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as thelead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s newfootwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digginginto loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on everystep, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathleteat Syracuse.“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” hecontinued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’sunique outsole lug concept.”The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray andBrown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design formsindependent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flexzones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted thelugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center, helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creatinga larger surface area.“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’sco-existence with all things found in the environment, saidBrown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it beanimal, plant or any of nature’s elements.Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new lineis that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’reto be connected with.”XTERRA’s footwear launch includes five styles: trailrunner, trail trainer, ultra trainer, performance sandal, andperformance slide. For more information on the product — or what retailersare carrying XTERRA — multisport athletes can go towww.xterrafootwear.com27

HOW XTERRA GOT STARTEDIT REALLY STARTED in the late '80's. That's when TomKiely (CEO of TEAM Unlimited - owners and producers ofXTERRA) was tasked with creating more publicity for theWaikiki Oahu Visitors Association. His idea was sports TV."First, sports is part of our life blood in Hawaii, and second, what looks good on TV? The beaches and the ocean,"explained Kiely. The concept was pretty simple. TV sports andentertainment is one of the biggest industries in the world. The travel industry is THE BIGGEST industry in the world.Bring those two together in programming, and you've gotsomething big.So he came up with the idea for the Hawaiian InternationalOcean Challenge - a lifeguard skills competition thatattracted water safety specialists from Australia, NewZealand, California, and of course, Hawaii. Then, he forged a relationship with ESPN - the worldwideleader in sports. In 1990 the Ocean Challenge was broadcast on ESPN,and millions of viewers were exposed to the beauty ofWaikiki - the sun, sand, and crystal clear blue water of thePacific Ocean. Subsequently, this is where David "Kahuna"Nicholas enters the picture - as "race director.""So we get into producing the Ocean Challenge," saysKiely. "And now I'm thinking I've got all these athletes andTV crews and if it costs me this much to produce one show,it'll cost less for another, and even less for a third."ESPN approves two more shows (Waikiki King's Race andDiamond Head Wahine Windsurfing Classic) and in 1991TEAM Unlimited produces three events and three TVshows. The concept is working, and Hawaii is reaping thebenefits of the outdoor exposure the shows are generating."So the next year (1992) we produced seven HawaiianSports Adventure Showsmultiple segments, differentstories, great scenics, and 30-minutes of entertaining, goodfun stuff," said Kiely. Those seven shows were in addition to the OceanChallenge and a few others televised events, including theinaugural Tour O' Hawaii."Now that was a great event," said Nicholas - now themanaging director of the XTERRA Global Tour. "The TourO' Hawaii happened before professional cyclists wereallowed to compete in the Olympics so the top riders fromevery country kept their amateur status so they could racein the Olympics. We just missed Lance because he signedwith Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich,Tyler Hamilton, and dozens of others. Looking back, thefield was a who's who of international cycling."A few years later the Olympics allowed pros to compete, road cycling in the U.S. was on the decline, and the Tour O'Hawaii was no more. At the same time, however, mountainbiking was taking off. So in 1995, in addition to 12 other TVshows and several events, TEAM Unlimited produced theHawaiian Mountain Tour.In doing so Nicholas and mountain bike Hall-of-FamerDean Crandall established the rules and held the first-evermountain bike stage race. This is also where many of theXTERRA greats first appeared. The likes of Ned Overend,Shari Kain, Melanie McQuaid, Steve Larsen, Mike Kloser,Leslie Tomlinson, and host of others were taking part in theHawaiian Mountain Tour. Now these races took place atKualoa Ranch on Oahu, where the Koolau mountain rangemeets the ocean, and the story goes that after their racesthe mountain bikers would ride down to the beach and jumpin the water. It sparked a thoughtwhy not have amountain bike triathlon?By 1996 TEAM Unlimited had produced more than 50shows and sporting events, and while the idea of an off-roadtriathlon was enticing - who'd pay for it?Almost simultaneously, the Aston Hotel in Maui (now theWailea Marriott Resort) was shopping for a good idea fortheir grand opening and the Maui Visitors Bureau waslooking for a new event that could tell a different story aboutMaui's south shore because all the exposure up to that pointwas golf. Well, what better way to show off the hotel andsouth shore than 1) starting the race at this beautiful beachin front of the sponsor hotel, 2) follow a race that covers 21miles of terrain with two dozen camera's, and 3) put it on TVfor the whole world to see?Add a phone call to Kiely from a friendly competitor in themarketplace (to remain unnamed) inquiring on the verysubject of producing an off-road triathlon and you have allthe main ingredients for XTERRA's birth.Kiely likes to define luck as the "intersection ofopportunity and activity." He recalls bringing Nicholas andVP of Marketing Janet Clark into his office."Look, I said, so-and-so called me and said that they werethinking about doing an off-road tri and if they do, then we'reforever second, so we have to be the first ones to do it. Iimmediately called Aston and the MVB and said O.K., I'vegot the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely."And that's what got us started in XTERRA."28
