Durkee, A’88, G’89, H’21,and their children, is awarded to senior students in theDepartment of Chemistry who have undertaken aresearch problem in the field of chemistry.The Margaret Durkee Angell and Henrietta BrownDurkee Scholarship Fund, in memory of ProfessorFrank W. Durkee, is awarded to that Jackson College seniorwho has demonstrated high promise and achievementin the field of chemistry. The prize commemoratesProfessor Frank W. Durkee, A’88, G’89, H’21, who waslong chairman of the department, a renowned chemist,a man of great energy and diligence in all that he undertook,and a most loyal alumnus of Tufts.The Alex Elias Memorial Prize Scholarship, establishedin 1966 by the Brotherhood of Alpha Epsilon Pi andfriends of Alex Elias within and outside the university, isawarded to that junior or senior who best displays thosehigh standards in community activities and in athleticand scholastic pursuits for which Alex Elias was wellknown.The Eliot-Pearson Department of Child DevelopmentPrize is awarded to that senior majoring in child developmentwho best exemplifies a combination of highacademic achievement and the promise of outstandingteaching ability.The James Vance Elliott Political Science Prize isawarded in the senior year to the student majoring inpolitical science whose achievements best combine academicexcellence with active participation and effectiveleadership in campus and civic affairs.The Frederick Melvin Ellis Prize, established in 1968 byfellow alumni, students, and friends of the late ProfessorFrederick “Fish” Ellis of the Class of 1929, the outstandingfour-sport athlete of his day and possibly the greatestTufts College has ever known, is awarded to a studentwho has demonstrated marked athletic versatility, amodest manner, successful academic achievement, andthe potential for effective leadership of youth.The Department of English Prize was created by theClass of 1898 Fund and is awarded to that student whohas shown excellence in English studies.The Ivan Galantic Special Achievement in HumanitiesPrize, named after Ivan Galantic, Professor of Art History1971-1989, is awarded to a student who has demonstratedthe inclination and capacity to cultivate an integrativeapproach to learning; one who reaches forwisdom, not simply knowledge.The Constantine Ghikas Prize in Romance Languageswas established in 1957 by George C. Ghikas in memoryof his son, Constantine Ghikas of the Class of 1941, forexcellence in a program of major study in romancelanguages.The John S. Gibson Award, named after the first directorof the International Relations Program at Tufts University,is given to the author of the most outstanding paperwritten by an undergraduate in one of the participatingdepartments in the International Relations Program.The Goddard Rhetorical Prizes, from a fund created in1862 by Thomas A. Goddard, then treasurer of TuftsCollege, are provided annually in the field of dramaticinterpretation and acting. These undergraduate prizesmay, at the discretion of the Department of Drama, beawarded for marked excellence in acting as demonstratedduring the student’s career in stage productionsof the university theatre.The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences OutstandingAcademic Performance Award recognizes the overallacademic achievement of graduate students as evidencedby course grades, quality of papers, theses, andprojects in the arts, humanities, natural sciences, andsocial sciences.The Graduate School of Arts and Sciences OutstandingContributions to Undergraduate Education Award recognizesexcellence as a teaching assistant or other rolessuch as mentoring undergraduates in the arts, humanities,natural sciences, and social sciences.The Graduate School Council Awards are given annuallyto outstanding graduate student organizations and facultymentors.The Graduate Student Research Awards are given semiannuallyto graduate students enrolled in either theSchool of Arts and Sciences or the School of Engineering.Awards are competitive and decisions are made by studentpeers and based on the proposal, significance ofthe scholarly activity and need.The Marjorie B. Greene Award is made to a graduateoccupational therapy student who has demonstratedoutstanding achievement in the areas of leadership andinvolvement in student and professional activities.The Greenwood Prize Scholarship, created in 1877 byMrs. Eliza M. Greenwood of Malden, Massachusetts, isawarded for excellence in state production and technicalarts, as demonstrated during the student’s career in theuniversity theatre.The Audrey Butvay Gruss Science Award is awardedannually, with preference for a female student, to a studentwho has demonstrated outstanding academic workin any of the sciences and who is a scholarship recipient.This award was established in 1992 by Audrey ButvayGruss, an alumna of Jackson College.The Robert P.
