PRIZE SCHOLARSHIPS AND ACADEMIC AWARDS >The Max Tishler Prize Scholarship, established in 1951by Merck and Co., Inc., to honor Dr. Max Tishler of theClass of 1928, H’55, is awarded each year to an outstandingstudent in the sciences, preferably in chemistry,entering the senior year.Trefethen Research Award The Lloyd MacGregorTrefethen Award is named in honor of Lloyd Trefethen,professor of Mechanical Engineering, and is presentedannually to mechanical engineering senior who has conductedoutstanding undergraduate research.The Norbert Wiener Award in Mathematics is given onthose rare occasions when a very young studentexhibits such prodigious strength in mathematics as torecall the highly unusual talents of the child prodigyNorbert Wiener, LA1909, who went on to become one ofthe giants of twentieth-century mathematics. Asidefrom his vast legacy within mathematics, he left hismark on popular culture by founding the discipline andcoining the term “cybernetics,” which has spawnedtoday’s notions of cyberspace.The Etta and Harry Winokur Prize for OutstandingAchievement in Artistic or Scholarly Work Award inthe Department of Music for music majors in junior orsenior years is given in recognition of outstandingachievement in artistic work such as composition or performance,and/or scholarly works such as a thesis.The Etta and Harry Winokur Prize for OutstandingContribution to Performance Award in theDepartment of Music for music majors in junior or senioryears is given in recognition of continuing outstandingcontribution to the performance activitiessponsored by the music department, such as leadershipin performance studies and department ensembles,chamber groups, and recitals, and/or leadership in audiencedevelopment, concert management, and artsadministration.The Marianne J. H. Witherby Prize in Archaeology wasestablished by Marianne Witherby, an alumna of Tuftswho is a devoted supporter of archaeological studies atthe university. The prize is awarded each year to anarchaeology major in recognition of scholastic ability,dedication to the discipline, and resourcefulness.The William Frank Wyatt Prize, established in 1962 forexcellence in the translation of Greek or Latin, isawarded by the Department of Classics to the studentwho best exemplifies Professor Wyatt’s sound scholarshipand catholicity of interest. Professor Wyatt was ateacher of Greek at Tufts from 1914 until his death in1961, and chairman of the classics department from itsestablishment in 1940 to 1952.The John W. and Katherine L. Zarker Award forExcellence in Classical Studies is awarded to a studentwho has demonstrated overall excellence in studies asdetermined by the members of the Department ofClassics. Preference will be given, but not limited, to studentswho plan to pursue a teaching career.290
