400: Length (in meters) of the intervals that Ciera Hunter ran, alone, in the November cold and under the football lights during the last week of practice. Dedicated Ciera wanted to make sure she did the workout even though T8 Writing Workshop and the early darkness of Daylight Savings Time overlapped. 25: Number of ab-‐busting scissor exercises that loyal LCXC senior Meaghan Reid challenged herself and her teammates to do just right during every core-‐building session — symbolic of Meaghan’s dedication to the cause. 0: Races that Shannon Deveney wanted to miss, even though a lingering injury demanded otherwise. Also the number of races we hope Shannon will miss next year when she comes back strong and, as always, eager to run. 29: Girls who experienced team in its very best sense because of the leadership of senior captains Katie Kent and Hadley Merrill, who brought good will, joy, sisterly love, and uncommon perceptiveness every single day of the season. Thank you, Katie and Hadley. 3:54 and 1:45: PRs achieved in November by assistant coaches Dennis Robbins (in his second marathon) and Anita Rackovan (in the Philadelphia Half Marathon). Dennis and Anita understand first-‐hand what the runners they coach must endure and overcome on their journeys to athletic achievement. This understanding is clear in their impressive new PRs, but even more so in their daily interactions with the girls on this team. With the best interests of the girls and the team as a whole always at the front of their minds, Dennis and Anita made a huge difference in the lives of these girls at every practice and every meet, and I thank them sincerely for all that they do as coaches and as my sounding boards, counselors, and friends. Awards Most Valuable Runner Caitlin Farrell Caitlin finished every race as our No. 1 runner this fall, and she placed eighth at the Founders League Championship to earn All-‐Founders League honors. Until this year, Caitlin raced under the tutelage of older, more experienced teammates. With her mentors off at college, Caitlin found herself at the front of the pack this fall, and she grew into the role wonderfully. Coachable, earnest, talented, and tough as nails, Caitlin turned in an impressive series of races in the second half of the season, concluding with her fastest 5k of the season at New Englands with a time of 19:44 on the 3-‐mile course at Northwest Park. Her best all-‐around race — and a real fan-‐pleaser — was Caitlin’s come-‐from-‐behind win in the Parents Weekend home meet against Greenwich. She ran a smart first mile, a relentless second mile, and a take-‐no-‐prisoners final mile, passing three Greenwich speedsters and outkicking the final front-‐runner in the last 200 meters. One spectator told me, in a scratchy voice, after the meet that she had gone hoarse from

cheering on Caitlin in that exciting final straightaway. We are looking forward to more excitement from Caitlin next year. Most Improved Victoria Smith Vic was new to cross country last year, and she improved rapidly, a hallmark of many a cross country runner’s rookie season. As she gained experience and fitness, her times got faster. But this year, in her second year on the team, Victoria continued to chop minutes off of her times, and we couldn’t be happier for her. Her 5k PR improved from 27:17 last year to 22:34 by the end of this season. That’s an improvement of 4:43, which is more than a minute and a half per mile. It’s no accident that Victoria has continued to improve. She is a true student of the sport, heeding the advice of her coaches, training assiduously over the summer, working on her form, and asking astute questions about the physical and mental aspects of racing before putting the answers into action. With each improvement in her performance, she gained confidence and humility. And her honest assessments of her rare so-‐so races were as sincere as her delight in the good ones. Victoria’s contagious enthusiasm for the challenges of cross country exemplify the Loomis Chaffee’s ideal of striving to be one’s best self and working toward the common good. Coaches’ Award Taylor Page Taylor has put Loomis Chaffee cross country first in her heart for four years, and she has never wavered. Always willing to give her best, always positive but realistic, always eager to welcome and mentor her younger teammates, always loyal to LCXC, Taylor has not only been a stalwart, ever-‐improving runner on the team, but also has served as the team’s de facto historian for four years — no humorous anecdote (especially about us coaches) escapes her voluminous memory. Taylor’s improvement as a cross country runner in her years on the team is remarkable. A 25-‐minute 5k runner and a non-scoring JV competitor as a freshman, she consistently scored for the varsity this fall, capping off her LCXC career as the No. 3 Pelican at New Englands with a lifetime best time of 21:07 on the 3-‐mile course (equivalent to 21:49 for 5k). It's hard to imagine the team without Taylor, her commitment, and her ready laugh. But, alas, we will have to adjust as it’s unlikely we can convince Taylor to PG for us. Taylor, thank you for all your lasting contributions to your team — in swiftness and in spirit. We will miss you, but you will always be part of the LCXC family.

LOOMIS CHAFFEEBOYS WATER POLO2012TEAM HISTORYWater Polo at Loomis Chaffee dates back to the late-70's when Coach Bob Hartman createdone of the first high school programs in New England. This co-ed team eventually split intogirls and boys varsity programs in the mid -90's with both teams having consistent success intheir respective leagues. The Pelican's won the New England Prep School ChampionshipTournament in 1994 and 1996, finished second in 1999, 2002, and 2003 and third in 2001.2012 STATISTICSOverall Record: 6-9Goals – L. Miller -23Goal Tending: Ryan Shelby56% Save Percentage, 8.45 Goals Against Average, 10.9 Saves/Game2012 SEASONComing off of a 2011 campaign that ended with an 8-8 record, the Pelicans were hopefulabout making another run at qualifying for the post-season tournament. The challenge wouldbe formidable as only two starters and seven letter winners were returning for the varsity, fortunately a very motivated and successful group of jv players were coming up through theprogram. Senior Tri-Captains Ryan Shelby, Tyler Rehor and Phil DeLaMater along withseniors Doug Gorman and Rob Nighingale led the squad through a very productive preseason.Juniors Jeremy Bogle and Tripp Miller and sophomore Landon Thies joined Shelby, Rehor,DeLaMater and Gorman in the starting lineup and the squad got out of the gate quickly witha dramatic come from behind victory over Andover and a decisive win over Hopkins in theopening weekend of play. A closely contested loss against defending New England ChampsDeerfield indicated that the squad was ready to compete at the highest level and we did thatconsistently over the course of the season. The team improved substantially during thesecond half of the season, becoming more disciplined and fluid at the offensive end, but theinability to turn quality chances into goals prevented the group from pulling off victoriesagainst the top teams (Exeter, Brunswick, Deerfield and Suffield) in the league. A hugethanks to all the seniors who gave so much of themselves to the program over the years, nowit’s up to juniors Jeremy Bogle, Tripp Miller, John Furlong, Fred Mun, Jeff Greenberg,Dennis Joyce and Owen Dumais to see if they can build on the foundation constructed thisfall and push the program even further. Senior Recognition: Doug Gorman – Though he narrowly dodged a case of hypothermia during our games at Suffield, Doug was a strong contributor at both ends of the pool throughout the season. His sharp shooting helped earn the win over Andover and nearly toppled Brunswick. His competitiveness and good humor will certainly be missed. Rob Nightingale – Though he was probably the slowest and smallest member on the varsity, Rob was also the most improved swimmer on the team and his leg strength

allowed him to battle much bigger opponents. By mid-‐season he was making terrific contributions with his great court vision and creative passing and we will sorely miss his impassioned approach to every practice. Phil DeLaMater – A captain and leader by example, Phil played thoughtfully and with great determination. Throughout the season Like a good center back on the soccer pitch, Phil’s ability to defend bigger, faster players and his poise under pressure on the offensive end enabled the team to improve dramatically, freeing others to attack the goal more vigorously. Thank you, Phil! Tyler Rehor – As a captains, Tyler’s positive energy and enthusiasm buoyed the program throughout the ups and downs of a very hard fought season filled with tightly contested games. Tyler provided scouting reports, and psyche music and his dedication to practicing and playing water polo infused the team with a passion that made being together as a group a really fun part of every day. Awards: Coaches Award: Landon Thies. As a sophomore, Landon was our only returning starter and really the only field player with extensive experience scoring goals at the varsity level. He took on this responsibility with a terrific sense of purpose, improving his effectiveness at 2m and as a threat on the counterattack. He doubled his goal production and dramatically improved his ability to draw ejections and put his team on the power play. We congratulate Landon on his selection as a member of the All New England Team and we can’t wait to see where Landon and this team will go over the next few years. Most Improved: Jeremy Bogle. Jeremy finished last year, his first playing water as a leader on a very good jv team. This fall he made the big jump to varsity starter and quickly emerged as one of our key players at both ends of the pool. A rangy and talented defender, Jeremy spent a good deal of time neutralizing our opponents key weapons, but he also established himself as a dangerous threat in front of the goal where his strong legs and good vision produced goals, assists and power play chances. Jeremy was also recognized as a selectee for the All New England Team and was invited to Princeton to participate in the fist annual East Coast High School All Star game. Congratulations to Jeremy on a break out varsity season! MVP: Ryan Shelby. In his third season as our varsity goalie, Ryan was the bricks and mortar that held this young team together and allowed it to compete at the highest level. We didn’t qualify for tournament play, but Loomis Chaffee was a feared opponent on every Wednesday and Saturday because our opponents knew they had to play well to get anything past our strong goal tending. Ryan’s confidence and understanding of the game helped the team improve dramatically over the past three years and his dedicated work “grooming” Jeff Greenberg to take over in the goal was a true gift. We thank Ryan for all he has given the team and will miss his leadership and determined play.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY SALLY KNIGHT At one point or another this fall, the Loomis Chaffee harriers defeated every one of their Founders League competitors; the victories have been brought home in the form of myriad titles and tons of hardware, including the sterling Scott Bowl for best season-record among Connecticut teams, second-‐place trophies from both the Canterbury Invitational and the Northfield Mount Hermon Invitational, and third place trophies and recognitions from both the Shaler WNH Invitational and the League Championships. Far more precious than any titles or hardware, however, are the guys whose hard work and season success have earned LCXC’s silver bowl, rainbow ribbons, shiny medals, and hefty trophies. Before I introduce these Pelican harriers, I would like to first introduce my fellow coaches. In coaching our athletes, we often reference Bill Dellinger, long-‐time coach of the University of Oregon powerhouse teams and of the legendary Steve Prefontaine and of the 1980s marathon phenom Alberto Salazar, himself now a coach of Olympians. In describing our coaching styles, I am more inclined to reference Frank Baum, author of The Wizard of Oz: I, of course, am Dorothy, with the vision and the organization of our motley crew. Andrew Bartlett is, of course, the Scarecrow—with not only the height and the tousled look, but most importantly, the brain, which he puts to use crunching numbers and strategizing tactics. Pete Gwyn is, no surprise, the Tin Man, wielding his chainsaw like an ax to clear our trails, and, as he puts it “nurturing the human spirit” with his big heart. Joe Neary is our Cowardly Lion, not because he shies or cowers, but because he has is all terrifyingly inspirational roar and bark, and with not even the tiniest bit of bite. And now to introduce our runners: First, the seven who represented us at the end-‐of-‐season varsity championship races: Captain Michael Horowicz Seniors Dan Lanza, John Macdonald, and Eli Robbins Juniors Tate Knight and Bobby Turner And Sophomore Dontay Downer. Special kudos to Bobby, our New Englands All-‐Star, and to Michael, Tate, Bobby, and Dan, our Founders League All-‐Stars. Next, harriers who have represented LCXC for four years: Leon An, Michael Basmajian, Andy Munoz, Representing LCXC for three years: Captain Jeff Stantial and fellow seniors M.Y. Jung, Krishna Kulkarni, Demarco Palmer, Paul Lee and Juniors Benjamin Laprise and Tim Mahoney.

Representing LCXC for two years: Juniors Emilio Arellano and Alex Calle, and sophomore manager Andrew Jones. Finally, in their first year of LCXC, Sophomore Frank Tucci and Freshmen James Jin and Colin Phelan. For their award winning finishes at Founders and New Englands, special shout outs to Benjamin, James, and Emilio. Each one of these runners has contributed in award-‐worthy was to the measure and immeasurable successes and memories of the 2012 season. Coaches Award Winners John Macdonald and Eli Robbins: John Macdonald: John came to cross country probably on the urging of his big sister, a Pelican runner herself, and stayed with cross country probably on the urging of his coaches and teammates. This season, however, John needed no urging: he fully embraced his speed and endurance, and converted them into scoring Pelican finishes week after week, always pushing and pulling his teammates along to faster races of their own. Thank you, John. Eli Robbins: Eli made more improvements on his time in half a season than many runners do in an entire season; with an injury relegating him to pool and bike workouts for the better part of the fall, Eli harnessed his ire and impatience, channeled his energies into supporting his team from the sidelines as he prepared to rejoin them on the race course at the end of the season. Undaunted by thwarted goals or recovery time, Eli resumed races with confidence and success, finishing as third Pelican at the New England championships. Well done, Eli. Most Valuable Runner: Michael Horowicz. Last season, Michael was number one Pelican on one occasion; this season, Michael ran number one in all but two races, and finished third in the Founders League Championships on Taft’s hilly course. Since his freshman year, Michael has been recognized as a bonafide runner, logging the extra conditioning miles between seasons, attending summer camps, staying in touch with teammates and coaches, and generally providing inspiration to all on his team and to the competition. With friends on almost every team we raced, Michael epitomized sportsmanship as well as speed and endurance. Congratulations, Michael, and thank you.

FOOTBALL CHUCK REID The 2012 addition of the Loomis Chaffee football team produced a fine season. The young men who reported to preseason camp on August 28th came well-‐prepared for the rigors of preseason. Though small in stature, the competitive will of the team was never questioned. Week after week, despite facing much larger opponents the Pelican ground attack led by offense of line of John Redington, LJ Lawrence, Dakota Hunter, Brendan Edwards, Kevin Sears and tailback Luvin De Leon averaged over 200 yards a game. Not to be outdone the passing attack also average over 200 yards again as Mandy Williams targeted Tucker Cheyne, AJ Poplin, Reinaldo Maristany, Durelle Napier, Brendan Wagner and Josh Sussman time and time again. Defensively the Pelicans started six underclassmen along with five seniors to form a team that was opportunistic, created several turnovers and was always a threat to score on defense. RJ Paige, Pat Afriyie, Andrew Cowan, Graham Cox, John Reddington, LJ Lawrence, Errol Francis, Javier Baretto, Dan Wade, Sebastian Dovi, Durelle Napier, Zach Harris, and Dakota Hunter led the unit. Greg Duverge, Aaron Chiu, Tucker Cheyne, Ashton Ross, Mike Wang, and Zach Ellish led the special teams. Unfortunately, we missed the services of Colin Morris on defense and Nate Harris on offense due to injuries. We must credit our managers, Taylor, Kassidi, and Payge for their tireless work throughout the season. However, none of this success would've come to fruition without the efforts of our senior class. We had a core group of young men who were committed to their teammates and their school. As we graduate 21 seniors this year, they leave behind a legacy of turning around the football program. It was the character of these young men that carried the team. Each player accepted his responsibility completely. The true character of our team lay within the young men who contributed in ways not often seen. Whether it was on special teams, as a scout team player, or as a third-‐down pass specialist these men who embraced their specific roles were the backbone of our team. Each teammate commanded their responsibility and put the team ahead of themselves. That sort of commitment is the reason why we had a successful season. Award winners The New England Preparatory School Athletic Council has named RJ Paige as a first team linebacker, John Reddington as a first team offensive tackle/nose guard and Emanuel Williams as the first team quarterback. Unsung Hero Award: LJ Lawrence The Unsung Hero award honors a young man who contributes to the team greatly. However, the athlete’s contribution may not be recognized by the casual fan. This person comes a practice each day not expecting accolades and fully accepts his role within team. This year's winner is only in his second year of playing football. He came to Loomis with hoop dreams however is leaving with gridiron dreams. LJ Lawrence contributed greatly to the success of our team he was one of three full-‐time

two-‐way players in our program this fall. LJ never backed down from a challenge and helped lead us to a very successful fall. The Persuader Award: Graham Cox The Persuader Award originated in the 1960’s and is given to the player who would spark to the team with outstanding play and emotion. This year’s recipient is Graham Cox, a four-‐year player, who began by contributing at the lower levels and worked his way up through the program. During the off-‐season he worked tirelessly and as a senior, he started the season as an outside linebacker and as a receiver. Graham’s biggest contributions came on the defensive side of the ball as a pass rush specialist. Graham consistently pressured the opponent’s quarterback on third-‐down situations while he recorded many key sacks. Graham’s emotion, energy, and willingness to be a team player are the reasons why he is this year's recipient of the Persuader Award. The Ralph Erickson Award: Durelle Napier The Ralph Erickson award is named after long time Loomis Institute Coach who led the Pelicans on the gridiron for 18 seasons, including two undefeated seasons. This year’s recipient of the Ralph Erickson award is Durelle Napier. Durelle arrived on the Island as a shutdown corner with a strong reputation from St. Anthony's High School in Long Island. We expected big things from Durelle from day one. Not only did he deliver on the field defensively, he also he ended up being a dynamic playmaker at wide receiver. Behind the scenes Durelle quickly became an emotional leader of the team and a teammate that the younger men could model themselves after. The Coach Nathaniel Batchelder Award: AJ Poplin Coach Batchelder was the first coach at the Loomis Institute and he led Pelican Nation to its first two undefeated seasons. This recipient is a three-‐year senior who has been a key contributor since the day he stepped onto the Island as a 120-‐pound sophomore. AJ Poplin was called upon the to play varsity running back after Ladarius Drew was injured. AJ responded with two game-‐winning touchdowns one against Avon Old Farms and one against Trinity Pawling. That fall was as a precursor of things to come. As a junior, AJ played a key role on special teams and on defense until a high ankle sprain slowed his season. Going into his senior year AJ was determined to have a great season and he put in countless hours of work over the summer in preparation for the fall. He was named captain and lead by example with emotional play all season. AJ led the team in receptions and played on every single special team. AJ also repeated his performance of his sophomore year, this time in even more dramatic fashion as he scored game-winning touchdowns again against Trinity Pawling and Avon Old Farms. Both of these touchdowns happened during the last two minutes of the game as we pulled off exciting come from behind victories. AJ has set the standard for which the younger players can model themselves and his hard work and dedication is appreciated by the coaches. Most Valuable Player : John Redington On most football teams, the MVP is typically a player with his ball in his hands. However, the glue that held the team together was an offensive tackle. From the moment John Redington stepped onto this campus, he took control of its young

offensive line and set an example of work ethic for his teammates to this follow. John’s summer conditioning was outstanding he never took a repetition off during preseason camp. He played almost every snap of offense and defense all fall and when he was off the field on defense he was constantly begging to go back into the game. John was an emotional leader and set the tone on the field as to how the offensive lineman would play each game. Without question, John's play on the offense line provided the spark that our team needed as a set the school scoring record this fall. Defensively he was the anchor of the defense of line as he controlled the center of the field from his nose guard position. Opposing teams simply could not run directly up the middle against us. Congratulation to John for a well deserved award.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL JEFF DYRESON 2012 Roster: Haley Magwood OH 2013 (captain) Ji Hee Yoon DS 2013 (captain) Catherine Dunleavy RH/DS 2013 Dionna Rivers MH 2013 Sarah Regan DS 2014 Maxine Offiaeli MH 2014 Kayla Schriebstein RH 2014 Allison Yeh S 2015 Marguerite Chapman L 2015 Greer Davis OH 2015 Madeline Ash DS 2016 Vanessa Young MH/RH 2016 Samantha Perry 2014 (manager) Season Summary (8-‐8): The 2012 volleyball season was a successful campaign. The program has taken a significant step forward and has returned back to prominence in the league; winning the Founders League and making it back to the New England playoffs. The overall record of 8-‐8 is deceiving because only 2 of the losses were 3-‐0 sweeps and 4 of them were lost in five set matches; the team easily could have been 12-‐4 or even better. Highlights included wins versus Exeter, Taft (on the road) and Hotchkiss at home(all in the same week). Every player on the team made significant contributions and many new faces once again had an impact. Freshman Maddie Ash and Vanessa Young may be young but there play earned them valuable time on the floor. The return of our 3 sophomore starters (Greer Davis, Maguerite Chapman and Allison Yeh) was exciting as they all improved on their individual play and leadership. The future is bright for these 5 underclassmen. Juniors Kayla Schreilbstein and Maxine Offiaeli were both returners and made significant strides in their play and leadership and newcomer junior Sarah Regan fit in immediately. The seniors, Haley Magwood, Ji Hee Yoon, Dionna Rivers and Catherine Dunleavy all made valuable contributions. Haley and Ji Hee were captains that always put the team before themselves, nurturing the young players and motivating the older. Dionna and Catherine both accepted their new roles on varsity with the utmost sense of pride and conviction and lead by example. All of them helped bring the team together and leave behind a positive legacy to follow. LCVB would also like to thank Samantha Perry serving as manager, the parents, family and friends who were loyal fans travelling frequently and supporting the team at every turn. Lastly, I would like to thank Nancy Cleary for her support and leadership as assistant coach and the entire athletic department for their support throughout this season (I truly believe our athletes have the best school and staff backing their endeavors). Of special note Haley, Maxine, Greer and Allison were nominated to the New England All star team. All did a fantastic job representing their school, the team and themselves well.

Most Improved/Comeback Player: Dionna Rivers Dionna had a special senior season. New to volleyball as an incoming freshman Dionna started her LCVB career on JV learning the game. Thanks to her coach-‐ability and positive attitude Dionna made the varsity her sophomore year as a project player, developing in practice mostly. Her time on the floor was not significant but she showed improvement and left the season with a promising future as an upperclassmen. Unfortunately, Dionna missed her junior year and it looked like Dionna’s career in volleyball was over. Last spring, Dionna came to see me and asked if she could return. She was told that she was welcome to try out but no guarantees would be made. She understood and returned back her senior year ready to prove herself. She had no expectations and came to every preseason practice with a quiet yet strong work ethic and fantastic attitude. She made the team but was low on the depth chart for both the middle hitter and right side positions. She didn’t complain or have a drop off in her work ethic as the season kicked off. Her game time early was limited but, again, her work ethic and attitude never waivered. Midway through the season the injury and illness bug hit the team and Dionna’s opportunity presented itself. Thanks to her approach she was ready and seized the moments granted. She not only filled in, but managed to prove that she was needed on the floor, emerging as the team’s best blocker and a much improved hitter. Her greatest testament and legacy will be the fact that she started in the quarterfinal match against St. Paul’s and held her own playing the middle blocker position. Dionna’s story is rare and special and I know I will refer to it for years to come. Coaches Award: Haley Magwood & Ji Hee Yoon This year’s coaches award goes to the senior captains because together they led this team in spirit and chemistry. Together they worked hard in the off season in preparation for the upcoming season and together they kept spirits high during preseason. During the season, when the tough losses came and adversity faced the young team, both Ji Hee and Haley worked hard to keep spirits up and the focus on positive. They stayed focused at practice, supportive of teammates and sacrificed their own personal goals for the betterment of the program. Both of them can be proud to say they were part of some very special moments including a Founders League Championship. They leave behind a wonderful legacy for others to follow and hope they stay connected to the LCVB family for years to come.

FIELD HOCKEY BOBBI MORAN This season’s 9-‐3-‐1 record and New England Tournament berth can be directly correlated to the dedication of our senior athletes. From the onset of preseason through the chill of November our three captains Alli Byrne, Melissa Haganey and Lauren Yue have consistently placed the needs of the team above their own and set the tone for this year’s squad. Juniors Charlotte Blumenthal, Julia Crerend, Karina Masri, Hannah Oganeku and Lily Rosenberg followed the lead of our seniors and arrived each day ready to play. Sophomores Brittany Bugalski, Kristy Cheyne, Charlotte Gacek, Noelle Gauthier and Sierra Semmel each added their own talents and depth to our roster. Their tenacious spirit helped the seniors to double their efforts and the level of play rose daily. Finally freshman Samantha Roy was perhaps one of the best new surprises to this year’s program. Sam should never underestimate the power of what one freshman can bring to a team with determination and sportsmanship. Not only were our athletes outstanding this year, but the addition of assistant coach Amanda Holland should not be overlooked. Amanda’s dedication and desire to learn the game remained at the heart of our team’s success. Amanda’s keen eye, calm demeanor and sense of fun infused daily practices. I could not have asked for a better co-‐pilot at my side this season. Thank you Amanda! Senior Recognition: Alli Byrne: for your dedication and service to the team. Alli was willing to play any position on the field this fall for the good of the whole and her attitude and selflessness was a testament to her character. Jordan Niezelski: your can-‐do spirit and commitment to the team were infectious this fall. Jordan kept us laughing when things got tense and understood that each player had a role to fill, behind the scenes she worked to help her teammates understand this as well, and we are grateful for Jordan’s dedication. Effie Xistris’s compassion for her teammates was evident from day one, she was a great friend to all and came into preseason ready to go, working her way through shin splints and broken bones to give the team her very best, it was great to have you on the field this season Effie.

Most Improved: Nina Sayles I am so proud of Nina's work this season. She stepped into a daunting role as goalie and commanded the field as if she had been there for four-‐years, which in essence she had, watching, waiting and learning, Nina made the most of her solo role this fall and helped LC field hockey to six shut-‐outs and a New England tournament berth. It is not easy to be a goalie and even more difficult to be the team's only goalie. It will be hard to fill her space next season and I am grateful to Nina for her enthusiasm and dedication this fall. Congratulations Nina on a terrific season! Coaches’ Award: Caroline Landy Carol was an unsung hero of the girls varsity field hockey team this fall. Always in the right place at the right time working to make a critical pass that led to a critical play, Caroline could be counted on again and again to sustain the midfield and support her teammates. The team depended on Caroline to give her very best at every turn and she never disappointed us. Little did I know three years ago when I made Caroline and Melissa roommates that this dynamic duo would be so much fun to watch on the field hockey field. All the years of living together had the two of them playing more like siamese twins than teammates. Caroline has a way of making every practice fun while raising the level of competition on the field. I will miss seeing "Singy" every day, but look forward to watching her play at the next level. Founders League All-‐Stars: Melissa Haganey and Leah Zavalick This season two of our athletes have been awarded the Founders League All-‐Star Award for their excellent play throughout the Founders League. Seniors Melissa Haganey and Leah Zavalick were scoring machines on this year’s squad. Every single goal that the team earned this season can trace its roots to the touch, shot or assist of one or both of these two ladies. Co-‐captain, Melissa, was also a Western New England All-‐Star and a three-‐year varsity letter winner. Her dedication to the team and lead by example attitude set the standard in practices and games. Teammate Leah Zavalick joined us as an All-‐American post-‐graduate this fall, choosing to be a Pelican instead of a Bearcat or Wild Boar, Leah’s lethal shot on goal quite literally broke the backboard with its sheer power more than once this season. From the moment Leah stepped on the field this fall the team’s destiny was set. She works hard, gives her all and leaves everything on the field. Together Melissa and Leah were a force to be reckoned with and they leave not only the forward line but also the heart of our program with big shoes to fill. I will be excited to follow their efforts in collegiate athletics next year. Thank you ladies. All New England Team: Lauren Yue Senior co-‐captain Lauren Yue earned herself a spot on the All-‐New England Team for her composed and consistent play throughout the season, and also for her demeanor and determination during the New England Tournament. Lauren’s steady stick in the LC backfield has been a constant source of poise this season. More than once the team would breathe a sigh of relief when Lauren would appear, from what seemed like out of no where, to swoop down and steal the ball from an opponent who threatened our defensive zone. This fall Lauren was determined not to let opponents get shots off in our "D". She commanded the defensive team with a calm, cool and collected voice that her teammates came to rely on. I am tremendously proud of Lauren's growth, both as a player and a leader and I look eagerly forward to following her field hockey career at the collegiate level.

BOYS SOCCER CHARLIE BOUR The Loomis Chaffee Boys Varsity Soccer Team was more than a team this year. The boys set high goals for themselves and worked hard to achieve those objectives. A few of our successes this season include winning the Founders League, earning a spot in post-season play as the #6 seed in New England, and also winning the WNEPSSA Team Sportsmanship Award. The sportsmanship award is most special to me on a personal level because it represents the culture that we strive to live by in the program. This year, the seniors played the fundamental role in building a culture of inclusion regardless of age or playing time, and especially a “no complaining” attitude but rather an attitude of encouragement. Control what you can, and let the rest roll by. As Coach Hutchinson would say, Be in the moment. This year’s seniors and post-‐graduates include Manager Emelynn Abreu, Ben Alziari, Alex Buis, David Calafiore, Henry Gilpin, Manager Nicole Lantigua, Nick Miceli, David Olio, Dale Reese, Nick Sailor, Mauro Serrano, and Eric Venezia. These humble, yet passionate young people are what helped turn this group into a family. TEAM AWARDS The team captains contacted me this summer and essentially demanded that we have a meeting. I did not go to them first, they requested the conference. During the meeting we discussed how the practice sessions should be run and that we needed more consistent routines in both training and games. These captains understood that they had incredible power in their hands and wanted to use it for the good of the team. Their abilities on the field were indispensable as the center midfield created and scored a number of extremely important goals, while the center back helped the team and his goalkeeper earn 9 shutouts in 18 games. Both Dale Reese and Nick Sailor are this year’s Co-‐MVP’s. The next two young men have rarely been recognized for their incredible contributions to the program. I want to let you both know that we do see what you do and who you are, and that we could not have come so far without you. Our left back is a tough, yet technical soccer player. He is probably the most competitive guy on the team, and it’s because of him that often times I actually had to tell the guys to calm down during the training sessions! This player’s motivation and selflessness were an ideal example of how every player should focus and get down to business. The next player’s energy and enthusiasm is contagious. He embodies what it means to get fired up, or get fired. He also played just about every position possible this season. Whenever he came off the field, I literally thought he was going to pass out because he never stopped running, he always gave his all in practice and in games. His personality is no different; describing his voice as loud is an understatement. I usually have to stop teaching every time he walks by my Spanish class as he’s giving a tour. I cannot say enough about the fire and the memories that these people have brought to our organization. The Co-‐Coaches’ Award goes to David Olio and Nick Miceli.

LOOMIS CHAFFEE GIRLS SOCCER2012 SEASON SUMMARYThe 2012 Loomis Chaffee girls soccer team entered preseason with only four startersfrom the previous year and many questions to be answered. After two weeks oftraining and preseason scrimmages, it was clear that the twenty players on theVarsity team were committed to maintaining the tradition of excellence at LoomisChaffee. While losing the first game of the season to Nobles, the team grew strongerand learned how to compete against the top teams in New England. The team wenton to win 13 straight games, outscored its opponents 54-8 and recorded 10 shut-outs.Among the highlights of the season included a 2-1 comeback victory overWestminster under the lights at Westy, a 1-0 win over Wilbraham and MonsonAcademy who were undefeated at the time, and a 1-0 win over Andover onHomecoming Weekend. With great play on the field and leadership from the seniors and captains, the teamwon the Founders League and Class A of the WWNEPSSA League. In addition, theteam entered the New England Championship as the #1 seed and with a 13-1 record.Despite falling short in the quarterfinals, the girls should be proud of all that theyaccomplished. Throughout the year, the success of the team was attributed to thestrong bonds amongst the players and the willingness of each player to accept herrole and commit to the team. The players worked extremely hard, challenged eachother to compete at a high level, and focused on improving their strengths andweaknesses. Often times, it is very difficult for players to whole-heartedly believe inthe team concept, but this group truly sacrificed individual needs for the commongood. That in itself defines a successful season and it was an extreme pleasure andhonor to coach this team. We’d like to thank Lindsey Kendall our team manager, Coach Hinchman whoassisted the Varsity team, Coach Kennedy and Coach Leyden who coached the JVteam, Coach Hutchinson and Coach Nguyen who coached the thirds team, and theentire athletic department. We thank them for their commitment to the girlsprogram and for all of their efforts throughout the fall season.Senior RecognitionSophie Kokoska, Danielle Marmer, Faith McCarthy, Molly Strabley, andOlivia Szczerbickyj all set high standards for the team and did a wonderful jobcreating a welcoming environment for so many new and young players. In their ownways, they challenged the group to play their hardest and to never give up.Playing in a new position as a central defender this year, Sophie seamlessly madethe adjustment and was a key member of our back four. In practice and in games, she led by example and never gave up. Throughout the entire season she workedhard to defend, win the ball, and start the attack. With her positive attitude andstrong work rate, Sophie was a great role model for our younger players. She willtruly be missed next year and we thank her for all her contributions to LC soccer. As a captain and team player, Danielle started as a forward in the first game of theyear, and then started as an outside back in the second game. While a major changein position could have been difficult, Danielle played with confidence and composureand had no issues adjusting. Her willingness to help the team in whatever capacityshe was asked was tremendous. When healthy, Danielle was a threat on both sides

of the ball and her tenacity, knack for scoring, and easy-going nature will be missed. We thank Danielle for her leadership on- and off-the field and we wish her all thebest in college.Faith helped set the tone for this year's team through her hard work, determination, and play on the field. As a veteran player and a captain on the 2012 LC squad, shecontinually pushed herself and her teammates to be the best that they could be.Faith always gave everything that she had and never gave up. This attitude and hercommitment to the team inspired her teammates and we thank her for leading thisyear's team with positive leadership and a desire for excellence.Molly worked hard all season and emerged as an integral member of the Loomisdefense. She was part of a back line that shut out its opponent ten times thisyear. In addition, Molly had the ability to join the offense and create dangerousopportunities in the attacking third. Along with her strong play on the field, Mollywas a great role model and represents all that we hope for in our student-athletes.As a returning varsity player, Olivia’s commitment to the team and desire to playwere tremendous. Unfortunately her knee injury kept her off the field for most of theseason and while she was disappointed with this, her positive attitude and the wayshe handled this adversity was outstanding. It was great to have her training duringthe last few days of the season and we appreciate her efforts these past two years. We thank all five seniors for their contributions to the soccer program and wish themall the best in their future endeavors.Post-season AwardsAs always, when a team achieves success, individuals are recognized for post-seasonawards. This year, the following players were recognized for their outstanding playon the field:WWNEPSSA All-League teamFaith McCarthy (senior)Abby Pyne (junior)Danielle Snajder (junior)CGSCA All-State teamFaith McCarthy (senior)Abby Pyne (junior)Danielle Snajder (junior)Abby Sotomayor (freshman)Melanie Vangel (junior)NSCAA All-Region teamFaith McCarthy (senior)Abby Pyne (junior)Team AwardsOur 2012 team awards go to senior Faith McCarthy, junior Danielle Snajder, andsophomore Anna Costello.Faith McCarthy is this year’s Team MVP. Faith did an outstanding job as a teamcaptain. She led the team by working hard, demanding that other players work their

hardest, and had a desire to win that was contagious. Whether the team was playinga simple possession game, running sprints, or playing soccer tennis, Faith wanted towin. Her competitive spirit will be missed and we wish her all the best as she moveson to college.Danielle also has the competitive nature and desire to win that sets players apart.Named a junior captain by her peers, Danielle’s presence on the field is one ofcomposure, tenacity, and simplicity. She does the little things right, and the rightthings extremely well. When we ask something of Danielle, we never have to asktwice. A coachable player is one who is willing and eager to listen and accept advice, but who also has the ability to take that advice and translate it to the game.Danielle’s eagerness to learn, positive attitude, leadership on and off the field, andher continuous desire to achieve excellence as a LC student-athlete are commendedand for these reasons she is the recipient of this year’s Coaches Award.Sophomore Anna Costello: Anna is this year’s Most Improved Player. As afreshman, Anna contributed to the success of the team, but this year she was aconsistent impact player on the attacking line. She came back fitter, stronger, andmore confident. She started every game up top and scored the tying goal againstWestminster in an important Founders League and Class A match-up. Through hertireless work ethic, willingness to defend as a forward, and her improved ability tocombine with other players, Anna was a threat up top throughout the entire season.Congrats Anna!LOOMIS CHAFFEE GIRLS SOCCER2012 Team and Individual AwardsTeam Awards/Accomplishments1 st Place Founders League1 st Place WWNEPSSA Class AFinished regular season ranked #1 in New England – Class AQuarterfinalist New England Prep School TournamentIndividual AwardsAll New EnglandFaith McCarthyAbby PyneAll StateFaith McCarthyAbby PyneDanielle SnajderAbby SotomayorMelanie VangelAll League – WWNEPSSA All Star GameFaith McCarthyAbby PyneDanielle Snajder
