TheRichardson College for the Environment and Science Complexis a model <strong>of</strong> green building technology, constructed to aLEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) SilverStandard. It is one <strong>of</strong> the most energy efficient educationallaboratory buildings in North America, using less than halfthe energy <strong>of</strong> a conventional building.Approximately 2,000 students daily will use the building,which will house the <strong>University</strong>’s departments <strong>of</strong> Biology,Chemistry and Environmental Studies. The facility will also be a policy centre for environmental issues,community learning, and a centre for applied research in environmental technologies.The Richardson College for the Environment, established through a lead gift <strong>of</strong> $3.5 million from the RichardsonFirm, Family and Foundation, is situated on the building’s 3rd floor and includes the Canada Research Chairin Indigenous Science Education and the Canada Research Chair in Inner-City Issues, Community Learning,and Engagement; the Institute <strong>of</strong> Urban Studies; the Master’s in Development Practice program; the IndigenousStudies department; the CISCO Centre for Collaborative Technologies, which includes a world-class TelePresencesystem and the endowed Cisco Chair for Collaborative Technology; the <strong>University</strong>’s Sustainability Office; the<strong>University</strong>’s medical isotope initiative; and the UW Community Renewal Corporation.The Science <strong>of</strong> GivingPower Corporation <strong>of</strong> Canada - Power Corporation <strong>of</strong> Canada generously donated a gift <strong>of</strong> $1 millionto support The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong>’s ‘A World <strong>of</strong> Opportunity’ Capital Campaign. Directed to the state<strong>of</strong>-the-artRichardson College for the Environment and Science Complex, the <strong>University</strong> will recognize thegift by naming the atrium within the Science Complex, the Power Corporation <strong>of</strong> Canada Atrium.The Atrium is a beautiful open space that encompasses the entire complex and represents the ‘lungs’ <strong>of</strong>the building. It will be the primary gateway to the Complex and main hub for students, faculty and staff.The atrium’s feature wall, which is four stories high, is made from the original <strong>Winnipeg</strong> Roller Rink flooringwhich was carefully removed and restored as another recycled component <strong>of</strong> the LEED certified building.Manitoba Hydro – Understanding the benefits the Science Complex will provide to <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong>Students and citizens <strong>of</strong> Manitoba, Manitoba Hydro donated a tremendous $750,000 donation towards thecapital costs <strong>of</strong> the new building. This donation marks the beginning <strong>of</strong> a cooperative working relationshipbetween Manitoba Hydro and The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong>’s Faculty <strong>of</strong> Science leading to positive resultsfor the environmental future <strong>of</strong> our Province.16

The Laboratory will be used to providestudents with a well-founded understanding <strong>of</strong> aquaticbasedchemistry, a "chemical perspective," essentialto those with a concern for environmental issues. TheLecture Classroom is in a high-traffic area, open to thestudent common spaces, and will see hundreds <strong>of</strong>students as they come and go throughout the day.Thomas Sill Foundation - The Thomas Sill Foundation donated $115,000 to create the Thomas Sill WaterResearch Laboratory for trace environmental contaminant analysis. This facility will be used to train thenext generation <strong>of</strong> leaders in understanding how pollutant exposure is linked to potential risks that maybe posed to human and ecosystem health.HudBay Minerals Inc. and the Robbins/Miller Family - A unique collaboration between HudBayMinerals Inc. and the Robbins/Miller Family resulted in a $100,000 gift recognized with the Flin FlonLaboratory naming. Dr. Peter Miller, who helped coordinate the gift, is a Senior Scholar and past Chair <strong>of</strong>the Department <strong>of</strong> Philosophy at The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong>. Inspired by the Robbins-Miller family history<strong>of</strong> mining in Canada and as a result <strong>of</strong> a generous exchange <strong>of</strong> Robbins/Miller land titles with HudBayMinerals Inc. the outcome <strong>of</strong> the partnership was a generous gift toward the new Complex.Marguerite Mol - Thanks to a generous gift made by Mrs. Marguerite Mol, to honour the legacy <strong>of</strong> herlate husband, renowned artist Dr. Leo Mol, outstanding students studying Environmental Science in the newComplex will benefit from the Leo Mol Scholarship in Environmental Science. Dr. Mol was a talented sculptor andfriend <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, and received an honorary doctorate from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong> in 1974.Robert W. Cunningham Family and Cunningham Business Interiors Ltd. - The gift <strong>of</strong> a classroom, to beknown as The Robert W. Cunningham Family and Cunningham Business Interiors Ltd. RANDY KOBES, ASSOCIATEDEAN OF SCIENCEThe late Randy Kobes, Associate Dean <strong>of</strong> Science, wasan outstanding academic, physicist and educator <strong>of</strong> youngpeople. He was fully dedicated to public engagement in science.His contributions to community learning at The <strong>University</strong><strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong> are immeasurable. One <strong>of</strong> his manycontributions is founding the Manitoba chapter <strong>of</strong> Let'sTalk Science, which promotes scientific literacy by havingU<strong>Winnipeg</strong> volunteer scientists visit classrooms, presentinteractive experiments and raise awareness <strong>of</strong> science.Dr. Kobes was a participant and a driving force in many other <strong>University</strong> and communityprograms, such as Eco-Kids, CSI (Community School Investigators), and the WiiChiiwaakanak Learning Centre.In October 1999 he won the Erica and Arnold Rogers Award for Excellence in Researchand Scholarship and in June 2005 he was awarded the Marsha Hanen Award forExcellence in Creating Community Awareness.Most recently, he realized a long time ambition <strong>of</strong> developing a degree program inScience, Environment and Indigenous Knowledge at The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Winnipeg</strong>.Upon his passing and in memory <strong>of</strong> Dr. Kobes’ many great works, the Dr. Randy KobesMemorial Scholarship Fund was established.
