President’s ViewBy John Francis, ‘83To say that our first alumni newsletter was a successwould be an understatement. The responsefrom our old boy ranks has been overwhelming.The Wentworth Alumni office phone has beenringing off the hook with one consistent question,“what can I do to help the school?” A heartfeltthank you to all who have responded followingthe newsletter mailing. Our association membershiphas grown two fold in the last three monthswith more applications arriving daily. In the monthof June alone we welcomed two lifetime associationmembers, David Johnson Class of ’63, andScott Hefner ‘92.Within this edition we will highlight summeractivities on campus, recent Red Dragon rallies,and logistics for homecoming. We are justmonths away from Homecoming and are expectingrecord attendance so book your hotel roomsearly. With 2010 Homecoming honoring veteransand an all ‘80’s class reunion, I look forwardto reuniting with many of my classmates. Forthose not returning to campus for homecoming,please consider entering our raffle. Your alumniassociation is raffling off an IPAD and you neednot be present to win. Details can be found on theweb site www.wma.edu. There are also a numberof sponsorship opportunities including theCommander Ed Ellis golf outing and the Fridayevening BBQ dinner. If you are interested in contributingto either events, contact Al McCormickat the Wentworth Alumni house.An upcoming Red Dragon rally is set for September18th in Chicago. The event will be hostedby Ditkas restaurant in downtown Chicago.On behalf of Rick Scheer ’84, Joe Frueh ’83 andAnteco Cross ‘93, please join us for a great afternoonof food, drink and storytelling. In October,John Stahlnecker ’84 will be hosting a Red Dragonrally in Omaha. There will be a get together atJohn’s home the afternoon of October 29th, followedby a tailgate party on October 30th in Lincoln,Nebraska prior to the Corn Husker footballgame. A mailing with details about both eventswill be forthcoming. Any questions regarding eitherof the events can be directed to myself orthe alumni office. If you have not yet taken advantageof the association membership, an applicationis included in this newsletter.Effective communication with our alumni willcontinue to be our focus with the goal of securingyour trust and support for decades to come. Toquote Anne Morrow Lindbergh, “good communicationis as stimulating as black coffee, and justas hard to sleep after”. Again, thank you for yoursupport.PS. I would like to extend a belated happy birthdayto my English teacher Mrs. James M SellersJr. In June she celebrated her 75th year of beingyoung.John FrancisAl McCormick has a new roommate in the MaringAlumni House....A Duck, who laid an eggand left some other souveniers. Director’s CornerBy Al McCormick, ‘67Membership isrelevant andreflectsstrength.The strength ofany organizationis its membership,not only those whojoin and choose tobe a part of the activityprocess butthat of financialstrength. Membership in your Alumni Associationis open to any former Cadet who is in goodstanding with the Academy.We are in a growth period and openly invitingyou to consider supporting your alumni membershipwith submission of dues. We openly supportthe mission, goals, and objectives of WentworthMilitary Academy. Monies provided fromour funds towards support of the academy arein the range of 99.8%, we have literally no overheadand extremely low administrative expenses.This gives you a unique position in terms ofnational alumni organizations, or perhaps betterstated any tax exempt organization. As we grow,it may not always remain so but for now it is.When you provide dues monies or contributionsyou have the satisfaction of knowing it will bespent wisely on academy needs.What do we support with the money? Here isa short list:The Annual Ed Ellis Golf Tournament. Yourassociation is a sponsor. We would also welcomeindividual sponsorship if you have interest.Annual Alumni (graduates) Pizza Party. Weare responsible for the annual party to recognizegraduates leaving for service, other colleges, orto enter the business world. We also include staffand educators on campus to this event as theyare the individuals who guided the students fromentrance as a RAT to graduation. The graduatesinclude, High School, Junior College, and theFalcon Scholars. This year, we added a sponsorout of Lincoln, Nebraska, Valentino’s Pizza whoprovided some of the best pizza around and reducedour overall out of pocket expense.“Goodies” in the registration bag for Homecoming.That’s a bad expression but you get thedrift. This year’s registration bag will have somethingyou can use to show Red Dragon powerduring the football game.Work Weekend. The annual alumni workweekend held every August has been an assetto the Academy. We have painted, repaired,and fixed items on campus that help relieve themaintenance group duties. This year, we willpaint the porches on the health center and thealumni house. If your hand fits a brush, then weneed you. Here is a short list: We have paintedclassrooms, the facilities in the stadium, varioushousing assets owned by Wentworth. We use aportion of your dues to feed the volunteers whoattend, every dollar is accounted for.Memorial Projects. A portion of your funds areawarded to preserving and expanding campusmemorials. Although we as an association arenot responsible for the assets, we have and willcontinue to provide maintenance to some of themonuments and memorials.Cadet Scholarships. Annually for severalyears, we have awarded scholarships to returningcadets. Generally, there are two awarded andthe amounts in relationship to the cost of tuitionare nominal. This is one of the areas we need toconcentrate on as we grow, not only do we needto increase our amounts per individual, we needto offer more than two per year. This will dependentirely upon the finances we can attract andcount on, along with support from membership.Yes, your membership is relevant, we look forwardto your involvement, and a membership applicationis included in this newsletter.Note: We can now accept some credit cards:American Express, Discover, and Visa.
