In the process, General Griffith’s troops completed thedestruction of the Iraqi 26th Infantry Division and, once in the objectivearea, discovered they had taken the enemy VII Corps headquarters anda corps logistical base as well. More than one hundred tons of munitionswere captured and large numbers of tanks and other vehicles destroyed.The 1st Armored Division pressed on, turning northeast and hitting theTawakalna Division of the Republican Guard. Late that night, Griffithmounted a night assault on the elite enemy unit and, in fighting thatcontinued the next day, killed thirty to thirty-five tanks and ten to fifteenother vehicles.In the 3d Armored Division sector, General Funk’s men attacked tothe east of Al Busayyah. Through the evening, the division fought itstoughest battles in defeating elements of the Tawakalna Division. TheVII Corps reached the wheeling point in its advance and began to pivotto the east. From here, General Franks’ divisions began the main assaulton Republican Guard strongholds. Meanwhile, the 1st Infantry Divisionwas ordered north from its position inside the mine-belt breach.
