The chief celebrant and homilistwill be the Most Reverend Gerald R. Barnes, Bishop of the Diocese ofSan Bernardino. A dinner reception in the parish hall hosted by theSteering Committee will follow the Mass.The Red Mass is for members of the legal community and theirfamilies to invoke God’s blessing and guidance in the administration ofjustice. All who are involved in the judicial system, including lawyers,judges, court personnel, court reporters, court security officers, andpeace officers are encouraged to attend the Red Mass.Judge Cynthia Ludvigsen Will Be Honored at the ReceptionSan Bernardino County Superior Court Judge Cynthia Ludvigsenwill be the recipient of the Saint Thomas More Award for her extraordinaryservice and devotion to church, community, and justice. TheSaint Thomas More Award is given to a lawyer in the community whoseprofession is an extension of his or her faith, who has filled the livesof the faithful with hope by being a legal advocate for those in need,who has shown kindness and generosity of spirit, and who is overall anexemplary human being. United States District Judge Robert J. Timlinwill present the award to Judge Ludvigsen at the reception immediatelyfollowing the mass.The Tradition of the Red MassThe Red Mass has a rich history. The name “Red Mass” is derivedfrom the liturgical color used in the vestments worn at the Mass, symbolizingthe gifts of the Holy Spirit bestowed through tongues of fire.The Red Mass is a Solemn Votive Mass of the Holy Spirit – the word“votive” indicating that the Mass is offered for the special intention ofthose present.The first recorded Red Mass was celebrated in Paris in 1245. In theUnited States, the tradition of the Red Mass was inaugurated in 1928 inNew York, where a Guild of Catholic Lawyers met with judges and membersof law faculties in old Saint Andrew’s Church in the courthouse district.The Red Mass is celebrated each year in Washington, D.C., whereSupreme Court justices, members of Congress, and the President attendat the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception.
