"<strong>The</strong>economy's so upside-down, peoplehave no money. <strong>The</strong>y're scared tobuy."For 32 years, like her father andgrandfather before her, Teter hasmanaged the car and truck dealershipthe family started in 1929.Each year, she rode out the slowfirst quarter until the uptick thatalways came in March or April."<strong>The</strong>n in the last few years, itgot up to May, and then June. It'sclean into the summer now," shesays. "And this year, it's been thewhole year."With an unrelenting credit crisis,swings in the stock market andmounting consumer anxiety, Teternow wonders if winter will everend; she trusts that her conservativeinstincts will keep her in business,but there's no guarantee.Last month, the biggest Chevychain in the country — Bill HeardEnterprises Inc. — went bust andclosed 13 dealerships in six states.High gas prices and the other problemsthat thousands of small dealersface every day were magnifiedby its size — too much inventoryand overhead, too few people qualifyingfor loans or even trying."It's the big ones, the smallones. We're all in the same boatafloating," Teter says.
