A guide to the use <strong>of</strong> advertising signageWhat is classified as signage?<strong>Signage</strong> and/or an advertisement means;“Advertisement” means any word, letter, model, sign, placard, board, notice,device or representation, whether illuminated or not, in the nature <strong>of</strong>, andemployed wholly or partly for the purposes <strong>of</strong>, advertisement, announcement ordirection, and includes any hoarding or similar structure used, or adapted for use,for the display <strong>of</strong> advertisements.What <strong>Signage</strong> requires the Approval <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>.All signage on private land requires the approval <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong> prior toerection/installation. However, the <strong>City</strong> applies a number <strong>of</strong> exemptions andrequirements to allow smaller signs without the need for planning approval.Some signage may also require a building permit (see Does my sign require abuilding permit?).The main planning exemptions are set out in the schedule <strong>of</strong> exemptionsand include, but are not limited to;- For sale signs 2m² maximum (One per property frontage)- Signs indicating name occupation or pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> the occupier <strong>of</strong> theproperty. 0.2m² maximum- Advertisements painted on a shop window- Advertisements not visible from a public space- Advertisement smaller than 0.6m² for an approved non residential use inthe residential zone- A wall signs not greater than 5m² on any non residential building.- Freestanding and wall signs for various zones and land uses based on thetype <strong>of</strong> use, the zoning and the location/size <strong>of</strong> the sign.If you need assistance to determine whether a proposed sign requires approvalprior to erection then please contact the planning enquiries <strong>of</strong>ficer at the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Busselton</strong> on 9781 0444.


What Information do I need to include in the application?The <strong>City</strong> will need a range <strong>of</strong> information including the type, scale, colour andlocation <strong>of</strong> the sign prior to determining the application.Please follow the links to the development application form and the AdditionalInformation for Advertisement Approval form which includes the specificapplication details. The fees for signage are set out in the developmentapplication form and are calculated on the cost <strong>of</strong> development.How Will the <strong>City</strong> Assess the Suitability <strong>of</strong> My <strong>Application</strong>?The <strong>City</strong> will have regard to the existing amenity <strong>of</strong> areas as well as seeking toavoid a proliferation <strong>of</strong> signs, particularly in rural and residential areas. <strong>Signage</strong>in industrial areas and commercial zones will normally need to be more visible,therefore a higher standard <strong>of</strong> design and finish will be expected. <strong>Application</strong>will be assessed by the <strong>City</strong>’s planning department having regard to the mattersset out in the town planning scheme. If you need further information prior tolodging an application please contact the planning enquiries <strong>of</strong>ficer at the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong><strong>Busselton</strong> on 9781 0444.Does my sign require a Building Permit?Yes, some signs will need both a planning approval and a building permit.Freestanding signs which do not exceed 3m in height and/or exceed 2.2m² inarea will not require a building permit. Wall signs which do not protrude greaterthan 200mm from the side <strong>of</strong> the building will not require a building permit. Allsigns which exceed these thresholds will require a building permit.My Sign is proposed on Public Land – Does it need Approval?The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Busselton</strong> does not permit advertising signage on public land. Publicland includes road reserves, parks, foreshore areas etc.Some community events such as fun runs, fetes, agricultural shows, sportingevents and fundraisers are permitted to place event signage on public landsubject to approval by the <strong>City</strong> and in some instances Main roads separateapproval is also required. Please use the attached application form to apply forany events with a member <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>’s events team who may be contacted on9781 0444. Events signage will only be permitted were there is a clearcommunity benefit from doing so and all safety and amenity considerations havebeen taken into accountAll directional signage within road reserves which seeks to direct the travellingpublic to a traveller service (such as accommodation or restaurant), tourismattraction, or community facility will require the prior approval <strong>of</strong> the <strong>City</strong>.Queries should be directed to the <strong>City</strong>'s development control team on9781 0444.
