Yoga is the perception of the Soul in every actionDear Kriya friends,This year it is 10 years since our beloved Gurudev BabaHariharanandaji left his physical body. His life was a life ofdivinity. He would remain continuously in a state of Godconsciousness. Such a master is very rare in this universe and wewere very fortunate to be in his presence. However it is notnecessary to be in his physical company to experience that he isalive and with us, through the precious Kriya Yoga and through histeachings. So let us all meditate sincerely and that through this he will givehis blessings to all of us.Baba Hariharanandaji told us:“Yoga is the perception of the Soul in every action. People arebusy with different works, so they forget God, the Soul. The power of God remains in your body temple and he activates inyou. He helps you to do the work, so intelligent persons try toperceive the Soul in every action. They realize that the Soul is thesole doer in this body house.Without Soul, nothing is possible. Without Soul this body cannotexist. This is the basic principle of Kriya Yoga: to perceive Soul inevery breath, in every moment. Then you are free and liberated. Then you are in knowledge, consciousness and super-consciousness.Through this you will attain wisdom i.e. Self-realization.”May the blessings of God and Gurus be with you.In divine friendship,Peter van Breukelen(President of Kriya Yoga Centre Vienna)3

The mysterious MonkExcerpt from “River of Compassion”God is omniscient. The scriptures say, yadrishi bhavanar yasyasiddhir bhavati tadrishi: “As is the desire, so is the success.”Persistent effort, perseverance, self-discipline, and meditation willbring success in one’s life. During this period of intense sadhana,Brahmachari Rabinarayan enjoyed both visible and invisible helpfrom the Divine. Once while he was meditating and observing silencein his closed room, somebody shouting like a madman knocked on thedoor. When Brahmachariji opened the door, a strange sight confrontedhim. Although the stranger’s dress and appearance suggested amadman, his face and eyes radiated inner peace and love. This wildlookingcharacter entered the room and studied the Saraswati idol thatRabinarayan had made. He asked why there is a woman in the room ofa brahmachari meditating in seclusion. Of course this was a verystrange remark, but Rabinarayan understood the inner meaning, whichwas to perceive and experience advaita, the non-dual state. Then themysterious caller said he was hungry. Brahmachari Rabinarayanoffered him a plate of sweets made of milk and sugar. He acceptedthem, and holding them before the statue of Saraswati, casuallyaddressed her: “Eat, eat…” His words were neither a mantra nor aformal prayer, but when he spoke them, two rays of sweet smoke, likethe kind arising from a burning incense stick, swirled out of the eyesof the Saraswati statue and settled onto the plate. The phenomenonastonished Brahmachari Rabinarayan, who quickly realized that hisvisitor was no ordinary man, but an extraordinary man in disguise. The stranger ate some of the sweets, and Brahmachari Rabinarayanwished for a little piece, for they had become holy prasad.People with a little spiritual prowess may flaunt it for name, fame, andpublic applause. But often, advanced yogis shun publicity. They moveincognito through the world. Rabinarayan’s visitor was one such holyman, who then gave him some practical instructions in spiritual life tohelp him achieve realization. This type of encounter betweenBrahmachari Rabinarayan and the wandering holy man is not amiracle or accident. Such experiences are the fruits of heard labor inloving, faithful, spiritual practice. The strange monk taughtRabinarayan some intricacies of meditation and spiritual life. He4

invited Rabinarayan to come to visit him, and several times, he did.Nothing else is known concerning the whereabouts of this mysteriousholy man, but his presence in Rabinarayan’s life was no doubt adivine blessing.Excerpt from the talk given byParamahamsa Hariharananda at All India Conference of theDivine Life Society at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack, in 1974In Chanakya Niti, it is said:sadhunam darshanam punyamtirtha bhuta hi sadhavahtirtham phalati kalenasadyah sadhu samagamah“It is auspicious and meritorious to glimpse holy persons; they arethe personification of holy places of pilgrimage. Visiting holy placeson a pilgrimage gives results in time, but visiting holy people givesinstant results.”Sadhus are always undertaking inner pilgrimages of forgiveness, selfcontrol, truthfulness, and joy. Inspiration, devotion, and innerstrength flow into our heart just by seeing them. The fruits of visitingholy places (tirthas) are less in comparison to visiting holy people. The benefits of beholding sadhus are immediate and profuse.Listening to the nectar-like words of wisdom from the mouth ofsadhus, practicing their truth-embedded instructions, and thencontemplating, conceiving and meditating on them, will yield goodresults in life. Adversity, bewilderment, despondency, and immoralityhave punctuated the everyday life of human beings not only in India, but everywhere. Surrendering to and taking refuge in highly Selfrealizedsouls and practicing their truth-laden words in everyday lifewill certainly foster a spiritual revolution among the people. There isno doubt about it.5

Nirvikalpa SamadhiExcerpt from “River of Compassion” by Paramahamsa PrajnananandaAs a plant grows slowly with the care of the gardener and, in duecourse, bears flowers and fruits, Brahmachari Rabinarayan’s journeyon the path of Self-Realization slowly progressed. Along the way, heknew many inner experiences and the taste of different stages ofsamadhi. During the year of 1944 to 1945, he was freed from theturmoil of the lower centers (chakras) and became more absorbed inthe superconscious stage. The period from 1945 to 1948 was the mostsignificant in his spiritual life.Once while he was meditating in his closed room at the Puri ashram,he entered into a deep state. His body slowly fell over and lay near thewindow; his head bled from an injury inflicted by the fall. The bloodwas flowing under the door, and outside, crows were drinking thefresh blood. When Swami Satyanandaji saw the crows and blood, hecame outside and saw that the blood was coming from BrahmachariRabinarayan’s room. Forcing the locked door open, he observed thebody of Brahmachari Rabinarayan on the ground. He felt no pulse, butthe body was not cold, so he massaged the soles of Brahmachari’sfeet, the palms of his hands, and his chest to bring him back to hissenses. On another occasion, Brahmachari Rabinarayan had gone toKetakijhar forest to meditate. He usually came back to the ashrambefore dark, but on that day he did not return. A resident student of theashram went to the forest in search of him, carrying a light and callingloudly “Brahmachariji ! Brahmachariji !” His own voice echoed in thedark silence, but no reply came from Brahmachari Rabinarayan. Aftera long search, the student finally found Brahmachari’s body leaningagainst a tree, looking almost dead and showing no sign of breath orpulse. Frightened, the student prodded the body while shouting inpanic, “Brahmachariji"!” Much to his relief, Brahmachari graduallyregained body consciousness and opened his eyes. As if awakeningfrom a long sleep, he asked, “Where am I?” In a little while heregained complete consciousness, but he was unable to walkunassisted. Only with the physical support of this strong young mandid he manage to return to the ashram that night.6

This was how Brahmachari Rabinarayan attained the extremely rarestate of nirvikalpa samadhi. In the yogic scriptures, it is said that afterattaining nirvikalpa samadhi, very few return to physicalconsciousness. Only a blessed few come back as God’s instruments tolead other seekers on the spiritual path to fulfill His divine mission. After 1948, through deep meditation, he was able to reach this stage ofsamadhi at any time he wished. In the history of modern saints and sages, Ramakrishna Paramahamsa,Lahiri Mahasaya, Swami Shriyukteswarji, and ParamahamsaYoganandaji were also able to experience this state at will. In theVedic literature, it is said, brahmavid brahmaiva bhavati: “Theknower of Brahman is Brahman.” One who has penetrated into theveil of nature’s meadows and perceived the illusive dance of maya isalways absorbed in the ocean of bliss. The pure mind always anchorsat brahmarandhra (the door of the divine), also known as sahasrara, the fontanel in the crown of the head. Once this closed door is opened,it is open forever, enabling one always to be charged with divineconsciousness and supernormal power. Brahmachari Rabinarayan hadachieved this rare state of samadhi, which was observed by manypeople, including doctors and scientists in both the East and West.Fire, sin, and truth cannot be kept hidden. They always revealthemselves. Slowly, the devotees at the ashram recognized howBrahmachari Rabinarayan had changed. The serenity, bliss, and joy ofcontentment in his countenance proved that he was well established inthis state of wisdom.Life on this Earth, in this body, is merely a preparation, a steptowards the higher life. Life is divine worship.Paramahamsa Hariharananda7

I am for All„Do you think that I am living for myself? Do you not know that Iam for all? My life is not for me – it is for all.” These words were hisconstant reminder to those who lived close to him. “A candle burnsnot for itself, but for others. Similarly, I live for the emancipationand liberation of others. I eat for others. I work for others. I doeverything for others.” Such was his divine life and message for all.One who does only for one´s own self is selfish. One who serves allis free and divine. The lives of great people exemplify beautiful qualities through theirordinary way of living and behaving. Through their lives flow loveand wisdom, helping us to know the reality and truth of life. Likelighthouses in the night on the vast, worldly ocean, they illuminateour way.8

From Brahmacharya to SannyasaFrom Brahmachari Rabinarayan to Swami Hariharananda GiriExcerpt from “River of Compassion” by Paramahamsa PrajnananandaSannyasa, or the path of monastic life, involves innertransformation through a self-disciplined, divine existence. There are two types of sannyas: vidvat sannyas, who entermonastic life after realization, and vividisha sannyas, whoembrace monkhood to attain Self-realization. Blessed arethose who sincerely embrace this life from the core of theheart, not owing to emotion or the influence of others. In thescriptures it is said: “One who carries a water pot and staff inthe hand becomes divine.” In essence, this means, one who hashis spine (staff) and brain (water pot) under complete controlis divine. Such a person was Brahmachari Rabinarayan. He leda strictly celibate life of sincere meditation and achieved therarest state of nirvikalpa samadhi.Rabinarayan’s twenty years of brahmachari life ended on May27, 1959. Consulting the Indian calendar, JagadguruShankaracharya chose the 13 th day of Vaisakha as the day forRabinarayan’s initiation into monastic life. At the end of thesannyasa ceremony, the guru gives the robe, staff, and name tothe initiate. Jagadguru Bharati Krishna Teertha gaveRabinarayan the monastic name of Swami Hariharananda Giri.“Swami” is a title conferred on a monk, and “Giri” is one ofthe ten orders of the guru-disciple monks chosen by AdiShankaracharya. (* 788 -† 820)As Jagadguru Shankaracharya explainded, the nameHariharananda consists of three words: hari, hara, andananda. Hari and hara are two aspects of the divine trinity –sustenance and dissolution of the universe – and ananda isbliss.9

Miles to GoExcerpt from “River of Compassion“ by Paramahamsa PrajnananandaParamahamsa Hariharananda taught that one who travels, and onewho serves the old and wise, is rewarded with a purified intellect;such a person’s knowledge expands like a drop of oil spilled onwater. Living mostly in seclusion in his early years, he later acceptedthe role of teacher and spiritual guide. Then, he traveled far andwide. Travel brings new experiences and one has to face newchallenges. Paramahamsaji used to say that true knowledge is like afriend and guide on one’s own journey. One’s trust in God and gurusbecomes stronger as one roam about the world to learn and to teach.A bridge between the East and the WestParamahamsaji lived in India until 1974, when he started traveling tothe West. From 1974 until 1996 he traveled back and forth betweenIndia and other countries in Europe, and North and South America, spending a few months in the West and few months in the East. Thushis life became a bridge between the East and West. What did he do to bridge the East and West? History shows thatIndia’s ancient spiritual wisdom is unique, but the West, with itspriorities of efficiency, industry, and science, has become the beaconof modern civilization. The spiritual wisdom of the East, especiallyof India is needed in the West to bring more calmness, love, andpeace in daily life. At the same time, discipline, punctuality, hardword, and other Western qualities are needed in India to bringmodern ways of thinking and living.Swami Vivekananda brought to the West the spiritual wisdom ofIndia, but he left much work for the generations to come.Paramahamsa Yoganandaji also traveled to the West, and althoughhe intended to stay only for a short time, he settled down in the USApermanently. What he brought from India, he gave to the West.Paramahamsa Hariharananda’s life was a life of balance. He wantedto bring the goodness of the East and distribute it to the West, andtake the goodness of the West to India.10

Synthesis of Scriptural WisdomAlthough the Eastern scriptures as the Bhagavad Gita or theUpanishads, and the scriptures in the West such as the Bible, appearto be the holy books of two completely different religions,Paramahamsa Hariharananda found a synthesis between them andtaught it to students in both India and the West.Paramahamsaji revealed the similarities in the messages of all thesescriptures. His deep insight into the Bible has amazed many people. He was invited to speak in many churches during his travels in theWest, where scholars, priests, and nuns were impressed with his lovefor Jesus and his thorough knowledge and understanding of theBible. He always made a comparative study of the Bible and theGita, and the Bible and the Upanishads, to show how a commonmessage can be found in these holy books, he encouraged hisstudents to acquire this knowledge, to study deeply and to apply it indaily life.Although he was born in an orthodox Brahmin Hindu family andwas raised in a very strict spiritual atmosphere, his love for allreligions and his perception of their unity were remarkable. He wentto churches and mosques; he met and had discussions with manyspiritual leaders of various religions. His message was universal. People asked him: “What is yourreligion?” He would usually reply, “My religion is the religion ofbreath.” The breath is the link to God, and through this link one canachieve calmness, divinity, and godhood. These can be achievedonly through the breath. When one speaks of breath, there is nosectarian belief; there is no religious boundary which obstructs, because everyone breathes. Paramahamsaji referred to the Bible(John 4:23-24) and said, “The worshipper of God should worshiphim in spirit and truth.” He explained that one meaning of spirit isbreath; God is breath. We should worship God through breath. Hehad a unique and fascinating way of explaining scriptural truths insimple, practical terms.11

2002 – The Journey ContinuesExcerpt from „Last Decade“ by Paramahamsa PrajnananandaBack in the USAThis year (2002) I left India and came straight to the USA after thebrahmachari training course, reaching the Miami ashram on October 2,coincidentally the anniversary of my coming to the West in 1994.Through your grace, eight years of a life of transformation had passedfilled with your love and divine guidance and ceaseless activity. In theevening I spent some time with you, Gurudev, and you were askingabout all the training programs. The next morning at 10:30 I had to go to Bogotá in South America.Early in the morning, you wanted me to be with you. The passing ofyour elder brother in July was still painful for you. When you spoke with me, your speech was related to death. I wascurious why you were talking so much about death. I thought it wasbecause I had lost my father. I did not know that you were preparing mefor what was going to happen.Advice on OrganizationOn October 3, I was supposed to go to Bogotá to resume my travels. Iwas in your room before 5:30 a.m. silently meditating. When you gotup, you had a lot to say to me. After your breakfast until 10:00 a.m., fora little over three hours, you lay on your bed and talked. Normally itwas your rest time, but on this day, you did not want to rest. One of themothers who took care of you kept coming into the room saying thatyou should rest, trying to close the curtain over the sliding glass door. But you were very strict. You said you had a lot of urgent matters todiscuss with me so she should go. I felt a little guilty at first, feeling likeI was spoiling your rest time. But you wanted to speak in detail, elaborately, about the future of the organization, the future of differentpeople, and the future course of action, explaining how I should dealwith situations. You were asking about everything in detail in India, in Europe, and herein the USA. You were completely happy with the way I was handling13

all the situations. You gave me clear-cut instructions about what to do,how to do it, and how to move forward. You told me who would stay inthe organization and who would leave. You emphasized that the comingtwo years would be a very crucial, difficult period for me. At the sametime you said, “I have left lots of trouble and difficulties with you. Youwill not be unhappy with me. When I saw you, I saw your destiny. When I saw you, I felt joy in my heart that the Divine Mother, at least, had sent someone who could be the instrument in my hands.Throughout more than two decades, I have observed you and have seenyou in every situation. My soul is content that you are with me and doing my work. Your lifeis blessed, a liberated life.” You blessed me and assured me that I wouldnever be unhappy with the difficulties and the problems you left behind. You also told me to remember that within the next two years time allthe problems would go away, and everything I did would flourish.I have seen in my life that whatever you promised or blessed has cometrue. A little after 10:00 a.m., you asked me: “Have you packed yourbags?” I said, “Yes Baba!” I needed only five minutes time just to dofinal packing and leave. I packed everything as usual. You came out just14

as you did every time someone left the ashram. With love, with joy, youbid farewell. You hugged me and you blessed me with your lovingtouch. You went all the way to the gate of the ashram in yourwheelchair. This picture cannot be forgotten. The last PlantingOn the 27 th of October you wanted to plant a mango tree in yourdoctor´s garden. Since you first came to Homestead to live, we had beensearching for a physician who could come to take care of you whenneeded. We found a beautiful, loving, angelic doctor mother, DoctorBarkett, living not far away. She readily accepted the invitation to beyour doctor, and you had special affection for her. Many noticed thatyou were a joy to the doctors who treated you. Many times the doctorcame just to see you, to feel better. You gave her a grafted mango tree. You grafted so many mango trees of good quality and good variety. This was the divine gardener´s last planting. Taking a few disciples, youwent in the van with a truckload of soil and the mango tree to thedoctors’ residence. The doctor was surprised to see all this. You locateda place to plant the tree and explained how much to dig. You supervisedeverything, and you told her how to take care of the tree. At the end of15

the planting, when the doctor asked you whether this made you happy, you said: “I am neither happy nor unhappy.” Perplexed by this and yourvisit to her house, she asked, “Baba, why are you doing this for me?”You replied, “Love.”On October 28 you signed many documents and many papers includingyour last will. Although the will had been drawn up before, you wantedto modify it. The attorney came and the documents were signed. Iremembered that on October 3, you had told me, “I have come to thisworld happily. I will leave happily. Remember, you will not beunhappy. Why are you so attached to me? What is there in this body? The body is born, and the body will die.”I was little emotional, with tears in my eye I asked you to whom Ishould be attached to other than you. You said, “No need.”You were telling me that you and I are one, and that there is no separateexistence. The beauty of the Guru manifests in the disciple. A sinceredisciple, with surrender and love, becomes one with the Guru. It is notreally attachment; it is oneness. You taught me to perceive that oneness.Attachment exists where there is duality. When there is unity, there isoneness. The child and mother are not attached to each other, they areone, although they appear as two. Mother Mary and Jesus are one. Theexperience of that oneness is beyond all attachment. This is pure love.In ordinary love there is attachment, but in pure love there is onlyoneness. You knew very well my love and devotion for you. You knew that thetime was coming when a physical association would no longer bepossible. You told me several times that when a mango is not ripe, it isattachment, but once it is ripe, it will become detached from the treewith even a little wind. The ripe mango is the beauty in the tree. I wasthinking about why you said, “No need.” Jesus said that the tree isknown by its fruit. If you are the tree, and we are the fruit, are we reallyready? You know everything better than what we think. You also said at that time: “You will never allow an operation on mybody. I do not want it.” You said that you had come to the world in joyand peace and would leave the world in love and peace.16

After signing the documents you were content and happy. The next daywas my departure to Europe. Before your lunch I spent nearly an hourwith you. When the food was ready, you told everyone to leave. Youcaught hold of both my hands, looked at me with a very piercing look, and kept on looking. I was thinking, “Gurudev, you told everybody thatyou had important things to say to me, but you did not say anything.”Your look however, spoke a lot. You hugged me and kissed myforehead. Then you spoke a few sentences about the swamis living inthe ashram and said it was time for me to go to the airport.I did not know the significance of all this. Later I remembered andrealized why. October 29 was the last day you came outside to bidgoodbye to me. I went to Europe with a heavy heart. I was concernedabout the way you looked and that your health was not good. I did notimagine that you were preparing to leave so soon.A Call from GurudevPhysically I was gone, but mentally I was trying to be closer and closerto you, Gurudev. From Vienna, I went to Paris, then back to London. When I came to London on November 23, I had my last telephoneconversation with you. Although you were speaking a littleinconsistently, you were very clear about what you were saying. Youasked me when I was coming to Miami. My usual schedule was to stayaway until February. I told you, “I will come very soon.” You said,“Come just now, don’t delay.”On the evening of the 23 rd you said, “Come just now.” To the mothersyou said, “Open the door, Prajnananandaji is coming just now.” On the24 th , I had a strange telephone call. I picked up the telephone and heardnoise in the background. It was early in the morning, and it seemed thatthe background noise was related to your room. Something was goingon. Were they taking you to the hospital? I did not know. I tried todisconnect the telephone, but could not. I went to the program and fromthere I called the ashram to know about you, Gurudev.Canceling my program, I flew straight to Miami and went directly toyour room to see you. I found you lying on your bed, not talking, Itouched your feet and I bowed to you. You looked at me. I leaned overyour body. You looked at me with your hands folded and smiled, but17

you did not speak. You touched my head. The doctor arrived andarrangements were made for you to go to the hospital. In the HospitalNobody knew what to expect. Initially, it appeared that it would benothing more than a short visit so you could be thoroughly checked byyour divine physicians; as events unfolded however, you remained inthe hospital for a longer and longer period. The harsh reality began todawn on us all.Slowly, you recovered the first night. You started singing songs andspeaking with me. You said, “How are you?” I said, “I am all right".You asked me, “Have you finished your work?” I said, “Yes.”You said, “I have also finished everything, let us go.”Until that moment, I did not know that you were preparing yourself toleave your body. You spoke in Bengali and others asked me what youhad said. I told them. That night we watched you carefully, and the nextmorning they did many other tests. At lunchtime, the Swamis broughtfood for all of us. Soon you were moved to a room with all the facilities.Gurudev, most of your talk was related to India. Physically you werehere, but mentally you were in India. You asked me if I knew aparticular Bengali song. I recited the words, and Vidyadhishandajiwrote them on paper. You looked at the paper while we sang the song. Isang with love and you smiled. Your joy was our joy.On the 30 th of November, you asked me about my father´s death: whathappened and who did the shraddha ceremony – the funeral rituals in aHindu Brahmin family. When I told you my elder brother did it, yousaid, “Why did your brother do it, why not you? Will you do one thing,a favor for me? Can you do the death rituals, even though for a monknothing has to be done? Will you do it in a special way for me and yourfather?” Until then, I did not know why you were talking about this.During this period, when the doctors would ask you: “How are youBaba?” you would say, “I am all right. How are you?”18

On December 1, you asked me again, “Are you ready?” I said, “Yes, Iam ready.” You said, “I am also ready; let us go.” This was the secondtime you indicated that you were going. On the afternoon of December 2, you were immersed in bhava samadhiand the ecstatic state. Your mind was elsewhere. I sat on one side ofyou, and Swami Shuddhanandaji was on the other side. You were lyingon the bed looking at us and then you started speaking in Bengali. Youstarted speaking in such a beautiful voice about life on the other planesand the five streams of five vital energies going and merging in thecosmic energy. You described your visit to Jagannath Temple andKamakhya Temple in Assam. Your language was a special Bengalilanguage similar to that of the writings of Bijoy Krishna. You have never spoken this kind of Bengali to me before. It wascompletely different, and you discussed how the life and fire pranasmerge in the Brahman. You described Kamakshaya Temple and goingthere to meditate on the Divine Mother. We told you about our visitJagannath Temple and meditation on Lord Jagannath. You also askedwhich door of the four doors we entered through. We had used thesouthern or eastern door.On December 1, I wrote a letter and mailed it to a disciple. I had afeeling that you were preparing yourself for the onward journey. Whileyou were in the hospital, I telephoned Debi Baba, your nephew, in Indiaalmost every day. I asked the Miami ashram to relay information aboutyour health to all the ashrams in India and Europe, and asked them tocontinue the prayer service for this period.Your ForbearanceDuring your last days in the hospital, you spoke to me several times inBengali about spiritual life and how to keep the mind on God in spite ofdifficulties. In the hospital, I saw your pain and suffering. The doctorswere amazed how you could rise above the pain and smile, with joy onyour beautiful face. And everyone started calling you “Baba.” When wetook you to have scans of the body, I was allowed to go in the roomwith you. You were saying “Why are you doing all these on me? I don’tneed them.” I usually said, “Baba, in a few moments it will be done,19

and we will go.” The medical staff would say, “Mr. Baba, in a fewminutes, it will be done.” They enjoyed your company.Even when you were sick, people came to receive your company, yourlove, and your compassion. Whenever you would go to the doctor or tothe dentist, it was memorable. You told everybody who accompaniedyou to bring baskets of fruits and other things to the doctor and dentist. When I went with you for your dental checkups, you asked us to carry abasket of mangos and bananas with you. You gave mangos foreverybody in the hospital. It was really unusual; every hospital staffperson was enjoying your grace, your love, and your compassion.Truly we were all blessed that your monks and mothers were able toconstantly be at your side during the last eight days of your earthlysojourn. Tirelessly they attended to your every need with unceasinglove and devotion. Communication between the hospital and the ashramwas constant during those last few days. As information was received, itwas relayed across the globe with the help of the center leaders,Anneliese Ma from Tattendorf, and the Kriya Yoga Institute website, where the latest news was being posted as soon as it was received. On the 2 nd of December you were physically in a lot of pain. It waspainful to watch you suffer. Katharine Ma and I discussed how weshould take care of you when you got a little better and returned to theashram. Dr. Barkett took me outside and asked me whether they shoulddo more tests. I asked, “What do you think? What are you trying to say?Is there any physical torture?” She said, “Yes. There will be some painand discomfort in the body.” I said, “He doesn’t need this. Gurudev hastold me not to do anything.” The doctor was very happy to hear thisremark, and she said “I am not God; I am not an astrologer or a fortuneteller. Let him live as long as he lives peacefully. It could be only a fewdays, few weeks, or a few months, not more than that.”Seeing your condition, I sent information to Brahmanandaji in Indiaasking him to come. Katharine Ma asked, “Do you think he should go?”I said, “Yes.” Then she said, “I will not sleep tonight, I will stay up allnight to watch him. I do not know how many more times I will be ableto do this.” All night, we sat and watched. You were in pain, and we20

were administering some medicine to you. You looked at me and closedyour eyes. We were giving you a gentle massage on the body.Early in the next morning, maybe for 15 or 20 minutes, I slept in thecorner of the room on the floor while others looked after you. Dr.Barkett came to check on you and emphasized the decline in yourhealth. I got up and touched your feet and found that your feet werecold up to the knee. I told Katharine Ma you would leave today. Itelephoned Miami ashram to inform everybody that anything couldhappen at any time. I told them to tell the local disciples and everybodyfrom the ashram that they could come and see you. Again the lower partof your body became a little warmer. I knew clearly that you wereleaving, but still playing with us. Durga Ma, Elizabeth Ma, oursecretary, Karen Ma, and many disciples from Miami and northernFlorida came to the hospital. Along with others, Dr. Chandrasekharafrom Winterhaven also came to see you.In the morning you played a trick on us. Again, your feet became warm. The hope of recovery was there. Nonetheless, you looked at me andspoke your last words. You said, “Peace, bliss, love, joy, divinity.”Uttering these words, you took my right hand. I was leaning on you;then you took my right hand and placed it on your lower belly, gentlyindicating to massage. While I was massaging you, people were comingand going. Slowly you were more peaceful, opening your eyes, lookingat us. During this period in the hospital, it was so beautiful in one way.Sometimes, you would open your eyes and look at me and the others.Your smile was so meaningful and so loving. I have never seen such abeautiful smile on anybody´s face, anywhere, even on your face. It wasa divine heavenly smile. The Swamis came to the hospital. Shuddhanandaji started chanting theBhagavad Gita. I think he chanted it continuously three times. I toldothers to meditate and chant the Mahamritunjaya mantra, andShuddhanandaji´s voice choked. I told him to have strength. We weresending information to India and other ashrams from the hospital.Gurudev, your breath was slow and irregular, and all of us were veryattentive. We started chanting the Gayatri mantra and looking at you. That evening, you were breathing in a very special way. One inhalation,a pause of some seconds, then another exhalation and another inhalation21

as when a yogi does pranayama, breath control. After one inhalation wedid not know whether you were breathing out or not. All were eagerlywaiting and waiting. The Swamis checked your pulse. It was there, butthere was no breath. Everyone´s eyes were centered on you. Thebeloved master of their life, a hero of life and death was lyingmotionless and peaceful. The sign of calmness and love was emanatingfrom your face. We called the doctor and the doctor came and checkedand declared it was over.Near the end many disciples came to show their love and gratitude toyou. Throughout this fateful day a constant stream of kriyavans came tobow and give love at your lotus feet. They were all well received, and inyour inimitable fashion each would be given a smile or a glance. Indeedmany disciples were present in the hospital when you took your finalbreath. Even until the very end, you used your body to give love to yourwayward children. Soon after your Mahasamadhi, Christine Ma,Mangalanandaji, and then Peter Baba arrived. We brought your body straight from the hospital to the funeral home, and from the funeral home to the ashram. The evening was gloomy inthe ashram. Many disciples were eagerly waiting to see their belovedGuruji´s physical form.In the ashram, there were signs of darkness, and lamps were burningalong the driveway for you. Your body was put on your bed. Everyonecame silently, bowed down, and left.Excerpt of a letter from Claudia Ma to Debi Baba (Dec. 2002).“….At 6 in the morning Silvia-Ma called us with the news...Yes, then suddenlyI remembered that some 10 years ago in India, Baba had told that I would notbe there at the time of His departure. So this was it. We came too late. Peter Baba was in the same plane. We metBrahmanandaji at the airport in Miami. He did not know the news yet since hehad come straight from India. We went to the ashram. They had just broughtGurudev from the hospital and He laid on the bed, decorated with flowers. Helooked different to me. I had never seen this face before. Also the wholeashram looked different: the banana trees, the roses, everything was22

different, as if a whirlwind had gone through the ashram. But there was aserene peace and I felt even a great, immense joy in the air: Babaji was freenow!Next morning I meditated near the altar of the dining room. I put my fingers inthe ears and I heard an extremely loud sound of church bells, as if all thechurch bells in the world were ringing in heaven, to welcome Gurudev.A beautiful week went by. Baba was so close. Many people told about theirbeautiful experiences of Baba, before and after His departure......”The word 'yoga' means union and denotesthe union of a person with God. This union is always presentand has merely to be realized.Paramahamsa Hariharananda23

From Form to FormlessExcerpt from “River of Compassion” by Paramahamsa PrajnananandaLike clouds in the sky that fall to earth as raindrops, then become theriver, merging in the ocean before they again become the clouds, lifeis a play of form and formlessness. The formless soul residing in theform of the body plays its role and then leaves the body – a processpeople call birth and death. For a realized person, birth and deathhave no meaning; both are just the play of consciousness. A realizedperson, through spiritual power, tries to help humanity as a whole toevolve and grow. Such a person’s life is the life of love and sacrifice. Many people have experienced the presence of the great master,Paramahamsa Hariharanandaji, after his physical disappearance. Hisdivine teaching continues.Paramahamsaji’s physical health began to deteriorate in the fall2002, and he was hospitalized for one week before his physicaldeparture. During his last days he spoke about spiritual life, abouthow to keep the mind on God despite difficulties. Although heshowed signs of physical discomfort, he remained calm and quiet, showing a strong sense of forbearance. He continued to be humorousand loving with the doctors, nurses, and other hospital staff, oftenshowing more concern for their well being than for his own health.People came from all over to show their love and gratitude, and toenjoy his company, love, and compassion. All had prayed that Paramahamsaji would live one hundred years, for he always blessed everyone that they should live that long. Noone present could believe that he would depart so soon. One day hewas immersed in bhava samadhi and the ecstatic state, and he spokeabout other planes and the five streams of five vital energies mergingin the cosmic energy. He also spoke about merging with Brahman, and about some of his other spiritual experiences visiting holyplaces. Instructions about monastic life were given to the author. The morning of his departure, he uttered his last words: “Peace, bliss, love, joy, divinity.” Slowly he became more peaceful, now andthen opening his eyes to look at those present with a divine heavenlysmile. Pure love and calmness emanated from his face as he drew hislast breath.24

At 6:48 p.m. EST, on December 3, 2002. ParamahamsaHariharananda peacefully left his mortal body. He exited the body toimmerse himself once more in the supreme almighty Lord.Traditional Vedic last rites were performed the next morning.Paramahamsaji’s mortal body remained in his ashram in Homestead,Florida, USA for one week to allow his disciples a final darshanwith the breathless master. The monks, yogacharyas, ashram residents, and others present metto discuss what final preparations needed to be made withParamahamsaji’s body. There had been some confusion about whatto do with his body, and although Paramahamsaji’s will left thisdecision to his disciple, the author, everyone’s opinion was honored. On the 10th of December, 2002, the mortal body ParamahamsaHariharananda left the Florida Ashram, homeward bound for thedistant shores of Mother India to be laid to rest with his forefathers. On December 13, 2002, his body arrived in Mumbai and was flownto Bhubaneswar on Saturday, December 14. The Government ofOrissa had decided to accord state honors to ParamahamsaHariharananda upon the arrival of his remains. Never before hassuch an honor been bestowed upon a monk. His body arrived inBhubaneswar, where the guard of honor, senior governmentministers and officials from the state of Orissa, and more than onethousand people eagerly waited at the airport to pay tribute to him.His body was escorted from the airport by the police, followed by aconvoy of many hundreds of cars to Hariharananda Gurukulam,Balighai, Puri, Orissa, his final resting place.Paramahamsa Hariharananda’s samadhi temple, the Gurus’ Temple, was inaugurated during his birth centenary year. Kriya Yoga Acharyas from Europearamahamsa Hariharananda helped the students to progress through his personalPguidance and care. Many of them received higher kriyas and a deep level of spiritualexperience. He said “A student goes to school not to remain a student, but to be educatedand to be even better than the teacher. Students in primary school do not remainthere forever. With the help of teachers they should learn and progress academically.Similarly, a spiritual seeker should progress on the path through his own self-effort andthe help of the teacher.“Picture on the opposite page: Paramahamsa Hariharananda with his designated successorParamahamsa Prajnanananda.Yogacharyas from Europe authorized to initiate and teach Kriya Yoga: First row above Peter vanBreukelen, Christine Jacobsen, Second row Swami Mangalananda Giri, Uschi Schmidtke, Thirdrow Petra Helwig und Claudia Cremers - together with their Master Paramahamsa Hariharananda
