201-268 have Brown Boveri equipment with full electronic chopper control and Telma eddy current braking.<br />

120-139 had Ansaldo electrical equipment and had been withdrawn by WCT in 1990 (120-135) and 1991<br />

(136-9). <strong>The</strong> story behind these vehicles is well known but is worth repeating. <strong>The</strong>y were ordered by<br />

Auckland Regional Council as part of a fleet replacement programme but before delivery, a change of<br />

political hue at the Council led to the abandonment of the entire trolleybus system. <strong>The</strong>y were locked into<br />

the contract, however, and had to take delivery of them, only to sell them on to Wellington, unused, at a<br />

considerable financial loss. <strong>The</strong>y did not prove to be a great bargain for their new operator as the<br />

‘Ansaldos’ were dogged by electrical problems that were never satisfactorily overcome, and they were all<br />

withdrawn in 1990/1. After laying around Kilbirnie depot in varying states of dereliction for several years,<br />

they were sold in 1997/8 for conversion to diesel buses, as shown below.
