Bottle ageing further contributes tospicy, mineral qualities and truffle aromas.Over time, <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion takes on an orangey, brick-redcolour and displays an attractive complexity on the palatethat invites another glass!The first vineyard in the world listedas a World Heritage Site by UNESCOAn international reputationThe fact that the wines of <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion are respected allover the planet is due in no small part to the great job doneby the Jurade, whose actions have had a major impact inFrance and abroad.As early as 1884, local producers established the firstsyndicat viticole (winegrowers association) in France.This was just one of many steps taken in <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion overthe years to enhance the production, promotion, and saleof the town’s world-class wines.The Syndicat Viticole created two appellations: <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion and <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion Grand Cru.They also instituted a classification enabling wines in the<strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion Grand Cru appellation to attain status as aGrand Cru Classé, Premier Grand Cru Classé B, or PremierGrand Cru Classé A.This classification is updated every 10 years.The Syndicat, which has since changed its name to Conseildes Vins de <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion (Wine Council), works hard tomaintain and guarantee the origin, authenticity, and qualityof <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion wine.A unique and harmonious creation of both nature andmankind, the <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion landscape bears witnessto centuries of history. According to UNESCO, «theJurisdiction of <strong>Saint</strong>-Émilion is an outstanding example ofan historic vineyard landscape that has survived intact andin activity to the present day.»Well aware of its special status, the Community ofCommunes of the Jurisdiction of <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Emilion</strong> asked to belisted as a World Heritage Site.In 1999, for the first time ever, a vineyard landscape wasacknowledged as a «cultural landscape» worthy of listingas a World Heritage Site.Since then, the Tourist Office of the Jurisdiction of <strong>Saint</strong>Émilion, the Community of Communes of the Jurisdictionof <strong>Saint</strong>-<strong>Emilion</strong>, and the Conseil des Vins have united theirefforts to help several million visitors discover the richheritage and beauty of their region.1011
