2013 Model InformationMODEL NAME: Z800MODEL CODE: ZR800ADFZ: UNLEASHEDKawasaki proudly presents the newest model in the Z family.40 years after the birth of the original Z, the Z800 takes the Z design in an aggressive new direction. While thedesign of its popular predecessor may be considered somewhat reserved, for the Z800 designers were givenfree rein to pursue a more vivid expression of the Z brand for the mid-size class.Engineers were equally unconstrained when it came to engine and chassis design. With increased enginedisplacement and increased chassis performance delivering even greater exhilaration, the Z800 offers an excitingand expressive choice of ride that makes other options seem pale in comparison.

UNLEASHED DESIGNGiven the freedom to create an unrestrained design for the Z800, designers pursued a much moreaggressive and visceral appearance. The Z800 exudes a palpable presence – less a machine and more a living, breathing entity. Numerousstreet-fighter touches contribute to the more aggressive package.BodyworkH Compact headlamp cowl uses a multi-facet design to create a more aggressive, glaring visage for theZ800. (1)H The fierce appearance is one of the key styling elements of the aggressive new design. From the sidethe engine shrouds and under-cowl appear to grip the engine, creating the image of a predator holding preyin its mouth.H Standard under-cowl contributes to the aggressive streetfighter design.H Like on the Z1000, the key cylinder is located at the front of the tank. This contributes to the compactdesign of the headlamp and front cowl, and moves the front cowl and instrument panel closer to the rider.Covers added to the side of the fuel tank contribute to the fierce street-fighter design. (2)Rider’s seat cover features a Z-pattern.Slim tail cowl design contributes to the Z800’s aggressive mass-forward image.New LED taillight design complements the slim tail. The LED bulbs form a “Z”. (3)Sharp design of the unitised footpeg (front and rear) stays enhances the light image for the rear of theHHHHHbike.(1)A(2) (3)

Street-fighter detailsHHandlebar has flatter bend, contributing to the strong street-fighter image. Taller handlebar risers ensurethe grip position is unchanged. (4)H Engine design is important for a “naked” motorcycle. New engine covers compliment the Z800’saggressive styling.H Attractive bend of the exhaust header pipes adds to the appeal of a “naked” motorcycle. The buffed finish (ZR800A/B only) of the header pipes further enhances appearance in this area. (5)H Rear inner fender adds to the streetfighter design, and helps to keep the under-tail and rear suspensioncleaner. (6)H Supersport-style aluminium die-cast footpegs add to the sporty appearance. Knurled finish offersexcellent grip when sport riding and the lack of rubber coating offers riders more direct feel.(4)(6)(5)Full digital instrumentationHThe Z800’s futuristic looking instrument panel featuresthree LCD screens.H The centre display contains a level-meter-style tachometer.Three tachometer display patterns allow riders to customisetheir ride.H In addition to speedometer, odometer, clock, dual tripmeters and engine temperature, newly added functionsinclude: fuel gauge, remaining range, and the EconomicalRiding Indicator.UNLEASHED PERFORMANCE: ENGINEWith its larger displacement, the Z800 engine offers increased performance at all rpm. The greaterperformance is especially noticeable in the low-mid range, adding to greater everyday usability as well asincreased riding exhilaration. Shorter final gearing complements the new engine character and emphasisesthe Z800’s stronger acceleration.806 cc In-Line Four engineHResponsive liquid-cooled engine with efficient4-valve, DOHC cylinder head displaces 806 ccfrom a bore and stroke of 71.0 x 50.9 mm.With bore increased from 68.4 mm to 71.0 mm,the new engine offers greater performance at allrpm. (Illustration A)H Fuel injection system is managed by a highprecisionECU.Ultra-fine injectors and larger-diameter 34 mmthrottle bodies (previously 32 mm) with subthrottlesoffer ultra-smooth response across therev-range.A

HIntake and exhaust ports, designed to suit the engine’s larger displacement, move the peak torque to alower rpm for stronger low-mid range and greater everyday usability.H Intake funnels of two different lengths optimise airflow: funnels #1, #4 are short; funnels #2, #3 are long.(Previously, all intake funnels were of a uniform length.)H Longer intake ducts (36.5 mm >> 41.5 mm) also suit the increased engine displacement and help to movethe peak torque to a lower rpm.H The ducts are also wider to accommodate the larger-diameter throttle bodies.H Cylinder is an aluminium die-cast piece with plated bores (previously gravity cast with steel liners). Itsopen-deck construction (previously closed deck) contributes to a weight savings of approximately 1 kg.HHOil pan features redesigned internal ribbing for increased durability.New cam chain with smaller side plates reduces the amount of the chain that contacts the chain guide forreduced operating friction.HHHHHHNew intake valve seat material offers increased wear and heat resistance.Exhaust systemCurved exhaust header pipes were made as long as possible. Equaliser tubes connect headers #1-#4and #2-#3. Both features contribute to increased low-mid rangeperformance.H Dual 300-cell catalysers in the collector pipe ensure thatemissions regulations are met.H Unitised exhaust device positioned just upstream of the silencerentrance helps to “tune” back-pressure waves for enhancedresponse in the low-mid range.H Short-style exhaust system eliminates the centre pipe and usesa short silencer for increased mass centralisation and a strongstreet-fighter image.H Silencer’s complex cross-section enables the requisite volumewhile ensuring an ample lean angle.Transmission, shift mechanism and drivetrainSmooth-shifting 6-speed transmission has a gear for every situation, from low-speed city traffic to highspeedhighway use.H Shorter final gearing care of a larger rear sprocket (43T >> 45T) contributes to stronger acceleration.H Finishing treatment for 1st output gear and 5th input and output gears (dry cut >> shaving) deliverincreased gear tooth durability.Revised layout for the clutch release shaft (5 mm longer, rotated 5 degrees clockwise) offers improvedclutch operation.Stronger spring setting load for the transmission’s position lever contributes to improved shift feel.Revised shape for the change shaft’s over-shift stopper offers increased durability.UNLEASHED PERFORMANCE: CHASSISWhile maintaining a highly sporty nature, the Z800’s friendly character makes it an accommodating mount forall riders. Increased road holding performance, and hence traction, on all types of road surfaces enablesboth sporty and friendly riding characteristics.

FrameHChassis geometry results in a package withnimble, responsive handling characteristics, together with a very stable feel. Posture is slightlyforward leaning (front lowered, rear raised),contributing to the more aggressive appearance.H The Z800’s high-tensile steel tubular backbonemain frame is based on the Z750R, with revisedrigidity balance.H Use of a cast aluminium engine sub-frameallows the front engine mounts to be positionedbehind the cylinder, close to the engine’s centre ofgravity. This reduces engine vibration transmitted tothe rider (particularly at the handlebars), greatlycontributing to ride quality. The engine sub-framealso allows the main frame construction to beslimmer, and contributes to the optimised rigiditybalance.H Pipe used to connect the front of the engine sub-frames (from left to right) contributes to optimised framerigidity (in particular, torsional rigidity) for increased handling stability.H Through the use of a combination of rigid and rubber mounts, chassis tuning delivers a very planted feeland a high level of feedback. The result is a superb level of control: the rider is better able to understandwhat the bike is doing.SuspensionH41 mm KYB inverted fork features settings optimised for the increased engine displacement and revisedframe rigidity.HFront fork is adjustable for rebound damping and preload.H KYB rear shock positioned 20 mm to the left of the bike centreline. Previously the shock was located 38mm to the right of the centreline. Repositioning the shock to the left side allows more room for the silenceron the right side, and enables a better left-right balance.H The rear shock features an aluminium body with a piggyback reservoir. It is adjustable for rebounddamping and preload.

BrakesH Large-diameter 310 mm (previously 300 mm) petal discs with sintered pads offer increased brakingpower.Dual opposed 4-piston calipers contribute to enhanced controllability.HErgonomicsHThe relationship between pegs, seat and handlebars was designed to enhance communication betweenrider and machine, giving the rider a confidence inspiring feeling of control that perfectly complements itsaccurate and precise handling qualities.H Fuel tank is narrow at the rear, making it easy for riders to grip the bike with their knees.H New seat design contributes to more comfortable ergonomics.H Revised shift lever arrangement (now on a separate axis from the footpeg) enables an even narrowerfootpeg position, further facilitating control.H The overall position is spacious and relaxed, helping to reduce fatigue on long highway rides, and uprightenough to facilitate seeing ahead in urban riding situations.H The slim overall design (Z800 seat and cover design are actually slimmer than its predecessor’s) and anatural riding position also make it easier for riders to reach the ground with their feet.ADDITIONAL FEATURESChassisHNew mirror design offers increase rearward visibility.H Luggage hooks are incorporated into the design of the rear footpegstays.H Rear flap is also equipped with luggage hooks (on non- Australianmodels), providing additional tie-down points for securing gear.AccessoriesHHHHTaller accessory meter visor adds a measure of wind protection. (7)Engine sliders help protect the engine cases in case of a fall. (8)Axle sliders help protect the fork ends in case of a fall.Sporty single seat cover blends seamlessly with the slim tail cowl, reinforcing the Z800’s street-fighterlooks.
