Medical Education <strong>Section</strong> - 4SECTION 4 : MEDICAL EDUCATIONCentral Council <strong>of</strong> Indian Medicine (CCIM) is the statutory bodyconstituted under the 'Indian Medicine Central Council Act,1970' which lays down the standards <strong>of</strong> medical education inAyurveda, Unani & Siddha through its various regulations.Similarly, Homoeopathy medical education is being regulatedby Central Council <strong>of</strong> Homoeopathy (CCH) through its variousregulations under the 'Homoeopathy Central Council Act,1973'. For medical education in Yoga & Naturopathy, no suchgoverning body exists.(a) Under Graduate Education:Since the inception <strong>of</strong> a separate <strong>Department</strong> for IndianSystems <strong>of</strong> Medicine and Homoeopathy in 1995, there has beena substantial increase in the number <strong>of</strong> <strong>AYUSH</strong> colleges in thecountry. There were 479 colleges conducting undergraduate<strong>AYUSH</strong> education with an admission capacity <strong>of</strong> 27135students in India as on 1.4.2007. Out <strong>of</strong> which, 20.5% <strong>of</strong> thetotal colleges with 15.8% intake capacity belong to Governmentsector. About 50% <strong>of</strong> the colleges with 41.4% admissioncapacity were <strong>of</strong> Ayurveda, whereas, about 38% <strong>of</strong> the collegeswith 49.5% admission capacity belong to Homoeopathy. The state <strong>of</strong>Maharashtra had a lead over other states for having themaximum number <strong>of</strong> <strong>AYUSH</strong> colleges (23.8%), and also havingmaximum number <strong>of</strong> Ayurveda (25.8%) and Homoeopathy(25.7%) colleges in the country. The states <strong>of</strong> Uttar Pradesh andTamil Nadu had the maximum number <strong>of</strong> Unani (28.2%) andNaturopathy (40%) colleges respectively. As Siddha system <strong>of</strong>medicine is widely practiced in the state <strong>of</strong> Tamil Nadu, 85.7% <strong>of</strong>the Siddha colleges hail from this state.<strong>AYUSH</strong> IN INDIA 2007 83
