Putting Learning First<strong>Community</strong>Space ChallengeFour <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> students, who haveattended the Motiv8 drop-in deliveryon a Wednesday evening at <strong>Brune</strong><strong>Park</strong>, accompanied Motiv8 staff in the<strong>Community</strong> Space Challenge held atPortsmouth Water Sports Centre onFriday 31 May. The students involvedwere Leon Tricket Year 8, LewisTrickett Year 7, Tom Wilson Year 7 andTom Tabb Year 7.The boys worked for 2½ hours clearingsome of the external areas of thecentre, including litter picking andgardening.All of the boys responded fantasticallyto the task set, with positive attitudesand consistent effort made throughoutthe day.Carl Stanton, Support WorkerYear 9 HampshireTrack Knock OutChampionships <strong>2013</strong>– Wednesday 1 MayA mixed Year 9 team travelled toThornden <strong>School</strong> in Chandlers Fordto compete in the first athleticscompetition of the season. Thecompetition involved a group of sixschools from around Hampshire. <strong>Brune</strong><strong>Park</strong>’s aim was to make the next roundof the competition. They have almostfaultless navigation skills across verydifficult terrain. Year 11 have done their best to set themselves up for theirfutures by completing the exams and the wait is on for 22nd Augustwhen the results arrive. We hope they have done themselves justiceand extend our good wishes to them throughout their lives as theyR Kelly - Headteacher continue to belong to the <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> family.The following staff move on after dedicating their time at <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> to supporting thestudents in their care and ensuring they make the maximum progress. Particular thanks go to MrsWebling, Head of PDL for 11 years, in which time she has driven the understanding of manycomplex issues and shaped students’ opinions. Thanks also to Mr Gilchrist who has, overthe past 25 years, taught in many areas of the curriculum and has for much of that time beenof support pastorally to significant numbers of students as Head of Year and Head of LennonHouse. More recently he has helped students working outside and participating in the OceanYouth Sailing Trust. Huge thanks finally to Mrs Thorpe for 33 years of service within Science,much of that time spent in a senior position as Director, successfully leading staff and studentsas evidenced in the department’s results. Many students over the years will look back on theirtime here and appreciate all that passion for Science which has helped them through theirlives. We wish everyone success as they pursue the next chapter of their lives. We preceded this work with a Transition Evening where parentswere invited to meet their child’s mentor. This was an extremely successful event and we lookforward to many years of working successfully with you and your child.And FinallyAs well as welcoming new students and their families, I want to finish where I started bysaying thank you to all of you – current students and parents. Do have a really good summerbreak and we look forward to continuing the improvements with you in September.SummerFest <strong>2013</strong>At 7.00am on Saturday 6 <strong>July</strong> <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> field was empty and silent. At 1.00pm whenSummerFest was formally opened by Deputy Mayor Wayne Ronayne and Deputy MayoressPaula Carter the huge field had been transformed with three different performance areas,lots of inflatables, stalls, refreshments and a Harrier Jump Jet cockpit. Most importantlyit was full of people helping raise money for the four House charities, Help for Heroes,Hampshire Autistic Society, GADSAD and Rowans Hospice.It was a wonderful afternoon with glorious weather. The crowds were entertained bystunning performances from local bands on the main stage and various displays andshows in the Arena and on the Satellite stage.So far the amount raised is a staggering £3829.30, which is amazing!Thank you to everyone whose help and support made SummerFest happen and toeveryone who came along and supported the event making it such a fantastic experience.BRUNE<strong>Park</strong>LifeNewsletter Issue 8 | <strong>July</strong> <strong>2013</strong>Year 9 EnterpriseDays – <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong>App ChallengeIn June all Year 9 students had a dayoff timetable to face an EnterpriseChallenge from the Education BusinessPartnership (EBP). The day was styled‘Dragons Den v The Apprentice’ andstudents were challenged to work inteams of 4-5 and design an App whichcould be useful to anyone coming to the<strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> site – visitor, sports team,student or teacher.Students worked in House teams withthe help of Business Mentors (whocame from a range of organisationsincluding IBM, Enterprise, Rent-a-Car and the Enterprise Academy atHighbury College). They looked into thedifferent uses, finances and marketingof their App and, towards the end of theday, had to make a presentation abouttheir App. Each House had a winningteam which went into the final to pitchtheir idea to the Dragons.The Business Advisors were impressedby the range of ideas produced, thecreativity and focus of <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong>students. Over the three days, FonteynHouse came out narrowly on top. Theirwinning team from Thursday are shownabove with the Dragons.

There were awards for hardwork and effort in all subjects, specialawards for noteworthy achievementsin special areas of the school as wellas House Leader and HeadteacherAwards for students displayingoutstanding personal values in eachHouse. This is something her familydo annually. The campaign centreson filling jam jars with spare change.As a tutor group we set our targetat £200, the cost of bringing a childfrom Chernobyl to England for oneweek. We have been fortunate enoughto have received such a visitor to ourtutor group.The idea was rolled out during HouseAssemblies, bravely led by Tiffany,Ashlyn Collins (Year 7) and Jack Roberts(Year 8), featuring pictures created bythe whole tutor group.These 3 students have beenoutstanding and really challengedthemselves to do more for others.We have currently raised about £80.We are now continuing our fundraisingand considering other ideas in order tomeet our target.Anyone wishing to make a donationcan do so by contacting Mr Butt in G1.Ex <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> Student OwenBallantyne Graduates with aFirst Class Honours DegreeSports Day <strong>2013</strong>In June a week of beautiful summerweather enabled <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> to hostthree excellent days of athletics.The first two days consisted of fieldevents and sprint heats as well as funinflatable games, cross bar challengeand assault course.The third day was our official wholeschool Sports Day which consistedof an afternoon of track sprint finalsalong with some staff races and tugof-war.There was a fantastic carnivalatmosphere as the Houses battled it outon the track for the honour of becomingthe Sports Day Champions.After some fantastic races by bothstudents and staff, Lennon won theoverall competition. Congratulationsto Mr Searley, House Leader, and theentire Lennon team on their victory!More importantly the event wasenjoyed by the entire school.Behaviour on the day was excellent andthe positive attitudes of the studentsboth competing and supportingtheir ‘Houses’ contributed to a verysuccessful afternoon.Please could I thank all staff whocontributed to the successful organisingand running of the three days and inparticular the Sports Leaders whoassisted staff with setting up equipmentand placing and timing athletes - theywere all fantastic!Mr Thurgood, Acting Director of PE,Sport and HealthAfter getting my GCSEs from <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> I headed outto St Vincent College where I studied Art, AdvancedActing and Media Techniques. When finished I gota placement through the college at PortsmouthUniversity studying a Foundation Degree in Art andDesign. This was great as it allowed me to explorelots of fields and then hone it into one specialisation.Throughout the year I got a little taste of Animationand I decided to study this further through a BAHonours Degree. As a subject it was great as it combined the things I am passionateabout, Design, Performance and Motion. University was great, sometimes verytough but definitely worth it. The experience of meeting new people and workingalongside really inspirational Tutors was incredible and I am insanely pleased to begraduating with a First Class Honours Degree this month.Governors - WelcomeThe Governing Body would like to welcome Donna Dayand Emma Fisher as new Parent Governors to <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong>and look forward to working with them over the next fouryears, and beyond.Donna is a volunteer with Girlguiding UK and doesvoluntary work at Newtown Primary <strong>School</strong>; she alsoworks in the local community as a Pharmacy Technician.Donna has a keen interest in the success of <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong>and welcomes the opportunity to contribute in any wayshe can towards this goal.Emma is currently Chair of Governors at a local Infant<strong>School</strong> and has 8 years’ experience as a governor. She isalso the Secretary of Friends of Grange Infant <strong>School</strong> PTA.She is employed as Staff Nurse at NICI, Queen AlexandraHospital working with families intensively. Emma wouldlike to extend her experience and skills to a secondaryschool and is keen to be part of the education of herchildren. She supports the values of <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> and feelsit is a great school to be involved in.Accelerated ReaderUpdateThe school has now reached50,000,000 words read! In total wehave read 3,723 books and 50,257,712words. Our favourite book remains as‘The Hunger Games’ by Suzanne Collins.We have two new one million wordreaders, both from Year 7, JamesHensman and Storm Milton. Well done.One million word readers: Fonteyn - 4,Lennon - 2, Gielgud - 1, Hepburn - 1.Big Share -Art WorkshopThe Big Share event proved to be abig success as students from clusterschools attended <strong>Brune</strong> <strong>Park</strong> to takepart in Expressive Arts activities.Thirty students from St John’s <strong>School</strong>and Brockhurst <strong>School</strong> workedhard in teams to build 3D willowfish sculptures. The week was filled with manyinteresting and fun activities.The first few days were spent in Romevisiting the Trevi Fountain, the AncientForum, the Coliseum, the splendidVatican City and the Spanish Steps.Students also took a ride on the TimeElevator, an interactive experiencetaking them back in time to thefoundation of Rome.Day four we travelled on to Sorrento,stopping along the way at the sereneMonte Cassino for lunch. Thatevening the accompanying teacherswere entertained by the studentsin the Trash Fashion Show with itsRoman theme. The next few dayssaw the students climb a very foggyVesuvuis, visit the Roman wonders ofHerculaneum, explore the ancient cityof Pompeii and take in the aroma of thevery smelly sulphur fields of Solfatara.The last day was rainy but this didn’tdampen our mood and we continuedwith our planned visit to explore thecoastal towns of Amalfi and Ravello,stopping at a delicious mozzarellafarm on the way. That evening wecelebrated our trip by holding anawards ceremony.The students were all fantastic and weall had a wonderful trip.Mrs Read, Assistant Subject LeaderHistoryGeorge Elsom - CongratulationsOn 3 <strong>July</strong> <strong>2013</strong> George Elsom completed his first GCSE pastpaper in French listening. He scored 34 out of 35.This is a brilliant achievement, especially as he is stillin Year 9! Congratulations George.
