Dr. Dewitt in a discourse deliveredin the North Reformed Dutch Church (cornerof William and Fulton Streets) on the last Sabbathin August, 1856, one of the illustrations in which isa ''facsimile on a reduced scale of a print of theold Middle Dutch Church in its original state as firstbuilt, executed in 1731."The old church in the fort had become inconvenientlylocated, was beginning to decay, and thepopularity of Dom. Selyns called for more spaciousaccommodations. Tradition says that a diversity ofopinions existed as to the site to be selected, a portionof the congregation contending that the spotafterwards chosen was too far out of town. The24
