January 1993Revised: August 2004, June 2008, February 2012<strong>UNITY</strong><strong>JOB</strong> <strong>DESCRIPTION</strong><strong>EXECUTIVE</strong> <strong>DIRECTOR</strong><strong>Position</strong> SummaryThe Executive Director has responsibility for the leadership and strategic direction of theachievement of the organization’s mission including the coordination and supervision of Unity’sHospice, Palliative and Bereavement programs.Reports toUnity’s Executive CommitteeQualifications1. Master’s degree in business administration, healthcare administration, accounting, or healthrelatedfield preferred. Bachelor’s degree required.2. Current clinical/professional licensure or eligibility in State of Wisconsin, if required.3. Requires a minimum of five years health care management experience. Preferably, fiveyears management experience of a Medicare-certified hospice program or similar agency.4. Proven leadership, communication, and organizational skills.Key Job DutiesAccountability1. Accountable for annual budget and five year plan.2. Provides the Executive and Management Committees with required/requested financialstatements and reports.Program1. Works with Medical Director to ensure patient care is clinically appropriate andappropriate visit utilization is achieved.2. Ensures that applicable local, state and federal regulations are met to maintainlicensure/certification/accreditation.3. Acts as liaison with other organizations, contract facilities or contract service providers.4. Ensures policy compliance.5. Maintains financial integrity of the organization by providing controls to ensure accurateand appropriate use of organization funds.6. Works closely with owners to ensure organization needs are met.Planning, Organization, Evaluation1. Develops annual goals with leadership staff and Management Committee input andpresents to Executive Committee for approval.2. Ensures the program provides the services outlined in the mission statement.3. Maintains current knowledge regarding standards pertaining to all programs. Aware offederal, state, and OSHA regulations and ensures compliance.4. Monitors program through quality improvement indicators on an on-going basis.Coordination/Supervision1. Ensures strong leadership team is in place to support current business and to supportgrowth.2. Oversees the selection, supervision, training and evaluation of employees andvolunteers.3. Works with Executive Chair in preparing agendas for meetings.4. Develops and/or reviews proposals for new services/programs.

Maintains awareness of legislation which may impact Unity’s programs.QualitySupport organizational efforts focused on continuous improvement.1. Responsible for quality plan.2. Ensures organization is patient and family focused.3. Identifies issues as they relate to the process improvement and customersatisfaction.Compliance1. Complies with all applicable local, state and federal laws and regulations as well aspolicies and procedures of Unity.2. Satisfies mandatory training requirements regarding local, state and federal regulationsand/or Unity’s policies and procedures.3. Documents, consistently and concisely, activity according to department protocols andstandards.4. Promotes and maintains confidentiality.5. Maintains personal and professional boundaries.6. Shares in providing 24-hour, seven day-a-week coverage.Physical and Environmental RequirementsEssential Physical/Environmental/Technical Skills:Employee must have the ability to; operate computers, telephones, and other officeequipment, communicate both verbally and in writing, sit for prolonged periods of time asrequired by position, walk, bend and lift up to 10 pounds on occasion, organize andprioritize tasks.Exposure to Hazards:In the course of duties there may be a risk of “occupational exposure”. An occupationalexposure defined by OSHA is “reasonable anticipated skin, eye, mucous membrane,nonimpact skin, or parental contact with blood and other potentially infectious materialthat may result from the performance of an employee’s duties.” This may also includeother potentially hazardous materials.Personal Protective Equipment (PPE):PPE is one measure available to all employees to help reduce the risk of contractingblood borne illnesses and other diseases. It is the employee’s duty to assess the needfor PPE’s and the appropriate kind to be used. Furthermore, it is the employee’s
