McCourtBarbara ’72 andNeal McGettiganUCSF Bornand RaisedIn 1957, Professor Marion Kalkman, one of the foremost psychiatric nursingeducators of her time, approached BettyFuruta (née Sasaki) and offered her agrant to pursue graduate education inpsychiatric nursing. “She told me, ‘Youhave great potential,’” Furuta recalls.“I wanted to know what the catch was.”The catch was that the NationalInstitute of Mental Health traineeshipwould pay for Furuta’s education, butrecipients were asked for one year ofwork in the specialty for each yearthe grant was provided. She readilyaccepted. Furuta, who went to graduateschool in the dawn of the clinical nursespecialist, would help grow the field ofpsychiatric and mental health nursing.“UCSF is a special place to me,”she says. “For my life in nursing, I wasborn and raised at UCSF. It essentiallydefined my professional career.”Furuta received her bachelor’s degreein 1957 and her master’s degree in1959 from UC Berkeley (the awardinggraduate institution was changed in 1960to UCSF). She would serve as an assistantclinical professor and a consultantbefore being appointed in 1980 to theOffice of Academic Programs ascoordinator of student services. Furutaeventually became the assistant dean ofstudents and international/special studies.Although she officially retired fromUCSF in 1994, Furuta spent the next eightyears teaching psychiatric and mentalhealth nursing on the faculty of KawasakiUniversity of Medical Welfare in Japan.“UCSF is a special place to me.For my life in nursing, I was bornand raised at UCSF. It essentiallydefined my professional career.”– Betty Furuta ’57“That was also through UCSF, from allthe international contacts I made whilethere,” she states. “It was fortuitousand fabulous.”Now retired for the second time andback in Richmond, Calif., Furuta reflectsupon the direction her life took. “I couldn’thave chosen a better profession,” shesays, noting that nursing allowed her theflexibility to be a stay-at-home mom forsix years and raise two sons with herhusband, all the while consulting parttime. To show her appreciation, Furutacontributes regularly to the School ofNursing, her $10 check in 1980 growing toDean’s Associates-level giving. “Nursingoffered me rewards and options farbeyond anything I could have anticipated.”*deceasedHonor Roll of Giving July 1, 2008–June 30, 2009 | 11
