WHAT’S NEXT?
This issue which features print
media across the globe and the art
of successful communication is all
about language. Sign language,
body language, bad language, good
language – it’s how we
communicate with one another that
defines who we are. But don’t take
our word for it; see how children in
Haiti and graffiti artists in Mumbai
express themselves.
A Class of Their Own
High up in the mountains of Haiti, and
with support from Sappi, the pupils of the
Ecole Soleil de Hollande learn from a
young age how to express themselves in
an increasingly multilingual modern
world. Alongside Creole and Spanish, the
children learn French – and here, chalk
in hand, scribble for us a few words
about their daily lives.
A Novel Approach
Does a world of ever more e-books and e-readers mean that self-publishing is set to
replace traditional book publishing? Go to www.whatsnextmagazine.net to read the story
self-published author Neal Pollack has to tell.
Facts on self-publishing
• The founder of print-on-demand company lulu.com said, in a 2007 interview, that his
business goal was to have a million authors selling ‘100 copies each, rather than 100
authors selling a million copies each’.
• In the same year, self-publishing company Xlibris estimated that its average title sold
127 copies. The head of self-publishing company Author Solutions, meanwhile, says that
her average author sells about 150 copies.
• Twenty-six-year-old self-published novelist Amanda Hocking sold more than 450,000
ebooks in January 2011 alone. Soon after, she switched channels and signed a multimillion-dollar,
multi-book contract with a mainstream publisher.
