They are:1) Production of toxic products (i.e. 4-OH-nonenal) following lipid peroxidation induced by haloalkenals,bromo-benzene and allyl alcohol in liver cells and under diabetic conditions: thiols groupsin membranes of subcellular compartments (i.e. mitochondria, endoplasmic reticulum, etc.) and inthe cytoplasm.2) Calcium homeostasis in liver cells: role of smooth and rough endoplasmic reticulum of livercells in maintaining a physiological level of cytosolic free Ca2+ using glucose 6-phosphate orinorganic phosphates to enlarge the pools of intracellular Ca2+ mobilizable by inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate and GTP.3) Magnesium homeostasis, transport and redistribution in cardiac and liver cells underphysiological (i.e. stimulation by catecholamines and insulin) and pathological (i.e. following acuteand chronic ethanol administration and under diabetic conditions) conditions.
