Automated Airplane Flight TipsBy BRIAN ADDISBrian Addis Cheif Flight Instructor -Lake&Air Pilot ShopIt has been almost 20 years sincethe first automated airplanes cameon the scene. You know, glass cockpittypes with those fancy autopilots.Now days we just call them automatedairplanes. Most of these displaysstarted with the large airplanes andover the years, this technology hasmigrated down through the ranks tothe lightest airplanes. I have beenquite fortunate to learn and teach inthese designs most of these past 20years. I started with the Airbus A320and moved up the ladder to the GVand finally to the Avidyne and G1000systems. It seems somewhat unusualto start with a large airplane and endup in a C-172, but that’s the way itworked as the result of technology,not choice. It is amazing to see thesimilarities in the training process andthe similarities in the frustration levelof the pilots in all of these automateddesigns. After 20 years instructing inautomated airplanes, do I have somefundamental suggestions? Yes, ofcourse I do.Point 1: Try to relax through thisprocess. Remember, many have gonebefore you and the vast majority ofpilots have been successful users.Almost all have been just as frustratedas you at one time or another.Point 2: You will find yourselflearning the same tasks over andover again. No, you’re not stupid.The tasks are so similar, interferenceis very high. Psychologists call itretroactive and proactive inhibition.You call it a pain in the neck.Point 3: There are three things youcan do during flight. 1. Press the rightbutton at the right time. 2. Press theright button at the wrong time. 3.Press the wrong button at the wrongtime. Number 3 is the worst.Point 4: Never use sentences suchas: “Where is this thing going now?”“Why is it doing that?” “What’s goingon with this thing?” Remember, youare the pilot. When your automatedworld starts to fall apart—and itwill—disconnect the autopilot;hand fly it. Get control of the properattitude, altitude, heading andairspeed. Then re-engage the autopilotpressing one button at a time whileyou monitor how well it does whatyou want it to do. RETROFIT GLASS COCKPIT IS HERE!by Rick Walhman, Avionics ManagerAs I see it, the big three inretrofit Electronic FlightInstrument Systems (EFIS) arethe Chelton Flight logic system,the Garmin G600 and the AspenEvolution.Chelton has been the leader ofthe race. The Flight Logic systemhas been available for some timeand is approved for installation inmost general aviation aircraft.The FlightLogic Synthetic VisionEFIS is a complete flight/navigation instrumentationsystem that provides information to a pilot via panelmounted LCD displays. The FlightLogic system includesan integral WAAS GPS receiver and integrates a Class CTAWS (Terrain Awareness and Warning System), whichmay be upgraded to Class B or Class A TAWS. TheFlightLogic system supports optional traffic and weathersystems to create a single, unified console for all flightdeck operations.Separating FlightLogic from nearly all other EFIS systemsare real-time, forward-looking 3D Synthetic Vision andHighway-In-The-Sky capabilities. In real time, the systemis able to present precise three-dimensional visual imagesof your aircraft’s relation to the terrain surrounding it onthe Primary Flight Display (PFD) and Multi-FunctionDisplays (MFDs).Garmin introduced the G1000 system several years ago,but this is not able to be retrofit in most aircraft. Theanswer is the new G600. This system has just recentlybeen certified and has an Approved Model List (AML)that includes most general aviation aircraft.The G600 combines critical flight data and displays it ontwo 6.5 inch diagonal flat-panel LCDs. High resolutionscreens are mounted side by side in a single bezel that fitsneatly into the “six-pack” slot in your instrument panel.On the left-hand side, the PFD integrates all situationalinformation regarding your aircraft’s position, speed,attitude, vertical rate, altitude, steering and flight progress.On the right side, the MFD provides detailed movingmapgraphics of your aircraft’s current position in relationto ground features, chart data, navaids, flight plan routingsand more.Aspen Avionics EFD1000 Pro system is nowSTC’d in many general aviation aircraft. TheirAML includes most GA aircraft with a 6000pound or less gross weight. Aircraft weighingover 6000 pounds will be added in the nearfuture.The EFD1000 Pro PFD gives you all themajor tools that help professional pilots flysafely and easily in instrument conditions. ThePro features an integral ADAHRS, backupbattery, emergency GPS, altitude alerter andlot more. The Horizontal Situation Indicator(HSI) integrates a course pointer and course deviationindicator (CDI) onto your slaved compass rose, and addstwo bearing pointers that you can set to any VOR orGPS waypoint, for added situational awareness. In thenear future you will be able to overlay datalink weathergraphics and traffic on the map. The Attitude DirectorIndicator (ADI) shows the aircraft attitude with airspeedand altitude tapes. Aspen will have an optional Multi-Function display available early next year.All of these systems require back up instrumentation;in most cases an airspeed indicator, attitude gyro andaltimeter. Many times the existing instrumentscan be used.The new generation Glass Cockpit is more affordable thanever before. What is Your Aircraft Interior Made Of?Does your aircraft interior pass FAA burn requirements? Has youraircraft interior been fabricated from normal upholstery supplies?By using these non-compliant materials the safety of your passengersis put at risk. In accordance with FARs, all materials used to fabricateyour interior must have proper burn testing documentation.Questionable materials being used would more than likely be caughton a pre-buy inspection and would lessen the value of your aircraft attime of resale. All thecolors, mild temps and fallfestival destinations aroundthe tri-state area make forperfect conditions for aenjoyable time. Once theleaves fall and the cold rainsstart, flying is typicallynot high on the list. Asyour plane sits, (hopefullyin a hangar) your batteryis slowly draining, youroil with 20 hours on itis collecting moisture,and your windshield is collecting dust. Personally, I havedealt with this matter and had a few times in which Iregretted neglecting my ship. Floatplanes and landplaneshave different concerns and share some of the same. Bothsuffer from slow draining batteries. You can attack thisby installing a battery maintainer so you have full voltagefor your next trip. Your oil should be changed at regularintervals to combat moisture and corrosion due to lackof use. You should put your winter fronts on soon andconsider switching to multi-grade oil. There are countlessJason Erickson-Director of Maintenance -WipCairearticles on the use of engineheaters but we all know thedamage caused by cold starts. Itmay be time to think of installingan engine heater. Floatplanesshould remove inspection coversand dry the bays of all water. Evensmall amounts of water can splitsuction tubes and large amountsof water can split bulkheads oreven split skins. Fall is a timeto schedule any of your wintermaintenance items with yourprovider and catch up on any ofthose items that have bothered youall summer. Large projects such as paint, interiors, avionicsinstallations, annuals, or modifications are best completed inthe off season. With all of us working ample overtime andjuggling families, precious days in the summer need not bewasted with downtime.
