2000 FIRE SERVICE RECOGNITION DAY<br />
This year Fire Service Recognition Day will be on Saturday,<br />
May 13, 2000, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This annual event<br />
provides each <strong>of</strong> us with an opportunity to increase the public’s<br />
awareness <strong>of</strong> their Fire Department’s varied roles.<br />
This year the Department’s theme for Fire Service<br />
Recognition Day is “Bonding with the Community.” Each<br />
LAFD fire station will be opened to the community for educational<br />
tours and informational displays.<br />
There will be special demonstrations and displays at the following<br />

The assign hiring has been reduced due to several factors, including the<br />
following. On October 10th, Apparatus Operators, Engineers and<br />
Inspectors were allowed to be hired as a Firefighter or<br />
Firefighter/Paramedic five days prior to the unfilled vacancy. On October<br />
24th, Firefighter/Paramedics were detailed to fill vacancies on Paramedic<br />
Rescue Ambulances. A total <strong>of</strong> 84 Firefighter/Paramedics were detailed<br />
for one month durations through January 12th. On November 10th,<br />
Captains were allowed to work overtime as a Firefighter or<br />
Firefighter/Paramedic on rescue ambulances five days prior to the<br />
unfilled vacancy. During the months <strong>of</strong> January and February, 14<br />
Firefighters graduated from paramedic school and were assigned to<br />
Paramedic Rescue Ambulances. On February 13th, 44 Firefighter<br />
recruits began their one-year probation at their first assignment.<br />
