It isalso the winner of the Resene TotalColour Nightingale Award for 2011. Theschool spearheads new teaching andlearning pedagogies enabling studentfocused integrated learning, so a wholenew approach to the design of learningspaces was required. How colour was used is a key componentin integrating this pedagogy into thephysical space. The 10 learning commonsopen onto a central circulation spinewith large voids allowing natural lightfrom skylights to penetrate the centralspace. These voids visually connect thelearning commons to facilitate crosscurricularinteraction and foster teamwork between teachers of variousdisciplines. The colours of each learningcommon define and orient the studentsas well as serving as their ‘house’ colours, enhancing a sense of identity.Colour is central to all aspects of AlbanySenior High School, best summed up asa neutral tonal canvas with splashes ofcolour providing meaning to the visionof the school. The exterior facade uses a combinationof black aluminium joinery panelsand green glass in an offset randompattern to echo the depth of the nativebush and help the bulk of the buildingrecede into the retained bush behindwhile the narrow red green and yellowpanels provide welcome splashes ofcolour characteristic of the Puriri berries,Kowhai flowers and brighter leaves. The steel is painted Resene Condor(powerful grey) to evoke the earthinessof the material while concrete is clearfinished with Resene Uracryl to bringout the inherent texture. The interior is a continuation of theexterior colour concept. The blackand white contrast is reflected in thegeneral wall colour of Resene QuarterTea (muted beige) contrasting with blackdoors and wall panels along the spineof the building together with charcoalcarpet. The steel structure is exposed andpainted in Resene Condor.Onto this neutral palette splashes of 10separate strong colours are introduced, one for each of the 10 learningcommunities played off against brightcarpet stripes and muted pinboardstripes. All the school’s colours are then broughttogether in the heart of the school, the entry foyer, where they are allrepresented in a larger than life pixelatedwall that encloses the library. Here the colours represent the diverseaspects of the school coming together asone new, exciting and thought provokingschool.Architectural Specifier: Hamish Boyd (Project Director), Roy Blok(Project Architect, Jeremy Bennett,Joseph Muir, Jasmax Ltd www.jasmax.co.nzBuilding Contractor: Arrow InternationalPainting Contractor: NTP DecoratorsPhotographer: Dave OlsenQuarterTeaFilmProDigitalGreenRed BerryRoyalHeathSurfieGreenTeaTitaniaTrafficTrojanBrightSparkRainForestCondorBlackMilkChocolateGeyserGorseGreyChateauHavocCamaroneStudioTrue Blue

new eraZiera Shoes, a new era of Kumfs, is an iconic brandthat’s recently been rebranded and emerged as Ziera.Same blissfully comfortable shoes, different nameand a whole new stylish look for its Australasianstores. The rebranding to Ziera provided the perfectopportunity to look at all the stores afresh. ZieraShoes are all about the perfect blend of fashion, comfort and style and the new store look neededto reflect that. While Ziera wanted their new stores to have amodern, fresh look it was important not to alienatetheir existing loyal customer base.Resene Eighth Stonehenge (muted grey) andResene Quarter Oilskin (grey brown) were chosenfrom the extensive Resene colour palette as perfectlycomplementing the new store’s colour scheme andwhile having an elegant and fashionable look, thecolours will easily stand the test of time. Thesecolours are joined by three custom corporatecolours, Ziera White, Ziera Light Lime and ZieraDark Lime, developed using the Resene TotalColour System. This palette of colours is now being used throughoutall 50 new look Ziera Shoe stores across Australasiawith many more in the planning stages. The storecolourway and concept works brilliantly alongsidethe new Ziera logo and modern design, with thesuperior level of comfort and quality matching theunique selling proposition of the shoes themselves.Architectural Specifier: Design EnvironmentsColour Selection: John McDonald, Design Environmentswww.designenvironments.co.nzPhotographer: Polyflorlively diningLotus is a pan-Asian restaurant in Marrickville and, unlikeother Asian restaurants in the area, the clients wantedan upmarket look and feel for their new restaurant. The layout of the restaurant is long and relativelynarrow, so a semi-divide was incorporated withcolumns and bulkhead to break up the space. Thisfeature was painted in a contrasting colour, ReseneRaspberry (warm berry red) which, together withthe wall colour, Resene Joie De Vivre (persimmon),and skirting in Resene Mexican Wave (red basedorange), creates a colourful and lively colour scheme. The colours were chosen for how they appear in theevening, as the restaurant does not open for lunch,as well as to give a fun and convivial atmosphere. This colour scheme is complemented with twowallpapers used in the back section and behind theservery. Five framed wallpaper panels hang on thepainted walls in the restaurant.Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel,Resene Lumbersider low sheen waterborne andResene Lustacryl, semi-gloss waterborne enameland Resene Ceiling Paint were used for the interior. All of these paint systems are Environmental Choiceapproved and low odour, minimising the disruptionto the smooth running of the restaurant. The rear door and the street window frames arepainted in Resene Dark Rum, a deep brown, whichalso matches the exterior of the restaurant.Matching business cards, menus and signage werealso created, incorporating the colour schemeensuring that all elements from the restaurant to thepromotional tools project the same modern image.Architectural Specifier: Judith Briggswww.colourconsultants.com.au

fresh flowerWhen the new owners undertook the task oftransforming Passion Café into Buttercup Café,they carefully considered all elements, includingthe floor. Situated in Kimbolton Road, Feilding, this café is a local favourite. But with all thosefeet traipsing in and out, the floor is subject tosignificant wear and tear. The dated vanished floors were high gloss andextensively yellowed as solventborne clearfinishes tend to do. Keen to make the most of thetimber flooring but in a more natural looking way,the previous coating was completely sanded offbefore the entire floor was coated with ReseneQristal ClearFloor 2K, a durable waterborneflooring finish, much lower in VOCs and odourthan traditional solventborne finishes. ReseneQristal ClearFloor 2K is a satin finish that looksnatural while imparting a hardwearing floorfinish so that it can withstand the foot traffic, dropped dishes and spilt food and beverages. Now the café is humming along the owners areenjoying the hardness of the floor and the easeof cleaning that comes with it and customersare showing their appreciation with theircompliments on how good it looks.Resene: BJ Searancke, Manawatu Trade Representativehome awayfrom homeParents of children having treatment at StarshipChildren’s Hospital have one less thing to worryabout thanks to the opening of Ronald McDonaldHouse Trust’s newest family accommodationfacility, Grafton Mews. standing ovationThe historic Theatre Royal in Nelson has beenconserved creating a fully functional theatre of 21stcentury standards while respecting its heritage. Thetheatre was built in 1878 and is New Zealand’soldest functioning theatre of timber construction. In true Victorian style the façade is an elaborateattempt to hide the predominantly shed-likestructure behind, the bulk of which was increasedwith the need for a substantially higher flytower tomeet modern day functionality.Looking at historic black and white photos it wasapparent the Theatre had been elaborately paintedenhancing the Victorian details. It was important tore-establish the building’s position in the communityby rethinking its bland appearance. The colour selection needed to give the buildinga presence on the street without being brazen. From the façade right through to the auditoriumsubtle connections have been made. The outsidenow looks resplendent in Resene Anticipation(mushroom rose), Resene Brunette (red brown),Resene Gold Dust (gold metallic), Resene Havana(smouldering brown), Resene Kidman (soft pink),Resene Quarter Lumberjack (dusky rose) andResene Warhol (rose pink).Appropriate sustainable Resene systems werechosen for use on recycled and refurbishedmaterials including the historic upper level façade, and roof ventilators. Resene Sonyx 101 semiglosswaterborne paint with Resene CoolColourtechnology was used for the timber cladding anddetailing to reduce the stress of darker colourson the historic façade and improve longevity. Thehistoric roof ventilation cupolas were finished inResene Uracryl semi-gloss to achieve a high levelof durability in an exposed location. On the inside at the outset of the project theauditorium paintwork was a tatty array of garishand loud colours – theatrical yes, but not befittingthe vision for this grand old lady’s future. The careful conservation work within the auditoriumrevealed a wealth of information about previouscolours used and these informed the final colourselection assembled to create a rich lustrous interiorbefitting the auditorium’s heritage.A small section of original frieze uncoveredbeneath a doorway architrave confirmed colourdevelopments were appropriate while allowing thisto be replicated and reinstated to further embellishthe space.A sense of opulence is achieved with the metallicgold painted details and deep velvet fabric curtainsand upholstery. The broad areas of soft warm coloursembrace the audience as the auditorium lights dim.Subtle use of contrasting Resene sheens recreatean original wall panel border stencil pattern foundbeneath layers of paper. Darker colours of thedado and flooring solidly ground the scheme withintegrity. The interior palette incorporatesan impressive array of huesincludingResene Aqua Squeeze,Resene Birthday Suit, ReseneBreathless, Resene Buffalo,ReseneBurgundy, ReseneCashmere, Resene Desperado,Resene Emperor, Resene Feta,Resene Gold, Resene GoldDust, Resene Green Mist,Resene Miso, Resene MuleFawn (brown red oxide),Resene Peanut (earthbrown), Resene Quicksand (muddy brown),Resene Rebel (warm earth brown), Resene Rialto(deep red), Resene Sienna (red brown), Resene Silk(soft beige), Resene Soapstone (warm neutral),Resene Sonique (pastel mauve), Resene Toast(red oxide brown), Resene Van Cleef (reddenedbrown), Resene Ventura (old sharp gold), ReseneVintage (brown rose) and Resene White. The foyer colours mediate between the exterior andthe auditorium with luxurious details on a fresh crispbackground. The Back of House utility areas are finishedin Resene’s PaintWise EchoPaint grey 100%recycled waterborne paint, recovered from unwantedreturned paint products.Other appropriate sustainable Resene systems werechosen for use on recycled and refurbished materials, including the refurbished theatre seats, recycledtimber benchtops, the re-laid rimu auditorium floor, the restored and reproduced decorative embossedceiling paper, and the chandeliers recycled fromprevious light fittings.Winner of a Resene Total Colour Commercial Interior– Public + Retail Maestro Award 2011, this theatre istestament to what can be achieved with dedicationto details.Architectural Specifier: Palmer & Palmer Architects LtdBuilding Contractor: Fitzgerald Construction LtdPainting Contractor (exterior): Brown & Syme Holdings LtdPainting Contractor (interior): Peter Wood Decorating,Brown & Syme Holdings LtdPhotography: Palmer & Palmer Architects Ltd,Kiki Nichols PhotographyProject Manager: Delta Projects LtdAquaSqueezeBirthdaySuitBreathless Buffalo BurgundyCashmereDesperado Emperor Feta Gold Green Mist MisoQuicksand

colour trendsfor 2012As we emerge from the depths of the recession, lifehas taken on new meaning. We yearn for a simpler, more relaxed way of living and we find comfort inthe familiar. Objects that remind us of happier timestake centre stage, and splashes of bold, upliftingcolours are fully embraced.Cheerful, optimistic yellows andoranges speak to our playful side, while tranquil blues and greensmuster a sense of wellbeing andwarmth. Add to that a vibrant mix ofpurples, mustards, ochres and earthytones – all colours that celebrateour past – and the new season’scolours combine to refresh, inspire, motivate and lift our spirits. Hueshave a feminine edge with a senseof cosiness. Alongside femininity liesretro. Old is the new new, as we lookto surround ourselves with nostalgicpieces. Raw, unembellished beautysits easily beside luxurious materialsor simple, upcycled objects.Splashes of strong colour feature notjust on accent walls – our appliancesand homewares are getting anoverhaul too. Toasters, mixers, fridges, rangehoods, ovens and otherhomewares are becoming brighterReseneSwitched OnReseneOutrageousReseneKoruReseneNirvanaReseneZealand cheerier, with oranges, yellows, reds and bluescoming through.Splash those feel-good colours onto walls andyou have instant pick-me-up pizzazz. Try ReseneWild Thing, a star-bright yellow gold that’s bold, energetic and frivolous. For the really adventurous, pair this playful colour with blacks or blues, suchas Resene Bowie, a clear litmus and cyan bluereminiscent of the 1960s.Resene Fleetwood harks back to the good old daystoo, with its gentle combination of green, brownand mustard yellow. It’s a fabulous match for yellowgreens, rouge violets and lemon sherbets, such asResene Nirvana, Resene Boogie Wonderlandand Resene First Light.Oranges are coming through murkier, though they’restill full of fire and splendour. Resene Ayers Rock isa modern take on burnt orange and teams well withreptilian olives (such as Resene Evolution), warmgreys (Resene Kookaburra) and spearmint greens(Resene Howzat).Reds are still mostly blue-based – your cherry redsrather than in-your-face reds – evoking energy, excitement and passion. The richly sensuous ReseneX Factor sets the mood with its deep, plush tones, while the brighter cherry red of Resene Bullseyewill heat things up without blowing a fuse.Rust red hues also move through into browns andearthy tones. Resene Courage is an earth reddarkened with brown. Try it with a smoulderingcopper metallic such as Resene Triumph or anearthy olive green such as Resene Butterfly Creek.Pink, the sweet side of red, diverges into many huesfrom pale pastels to the more luscious. ReseneSmitten is a vivacious fuchsia pinkwith a pinch of violet, while ReseneDevoted is a delicate cherryblossom blushed pink – sweetlyfeminine and soft.Blues feature widely in the colourpalette – after all, we’re happiestwhen the sky is blue. From intenseblues to washed out indigo blues aswell as cyan and lagoon blues, thisis a hue that instils confidence andpromotes an overall sense of serenity.Resene Escape is refreshing andoptimistic, a pale cerulean blue, dreamy and calm. It’s the perfectcomplement to the stormy blue greyof Resene Jetsetter. Deeply intenseblues such as Resene Magnum andResene Nite Life provide a viableneutral alternative to grey or black.Mixed with silver you can achievethe elegance of a more traditionalblack and gold combination.Purples are also varied – frombold violet to the softened purplesof dried flowers, such as ReseneBelieve and Resene Poet. Theyall have an underlying warmth incommon, ultramodern, majestic orsubtle.Nature takes last season’s greens toa whole new level, with a broader, fresher, more back-to-earth range.Greens are coming indoors as peopletreat their home as a sanctuary andrecreate the illusion of being nestledin nature, rather than in the middleof suburbia.Minty apple greens, like ReseneKandinsky, are one flavour ofthe season as a fresh exterior lookand inside in reading rooms andbedrooms. The palette also extends to yellowgreens, such as Resene Koru andResene Nirvana, and turquoiseand emerald greens such as ReseneZeal and Resene Moxie. There’sReseneFree SpiritReseneFleetwoodReseneCode RedReseneRock N RollReseneSmittenReseneDevotedReseneAyers RockReseneMagnumReseneNite LifeReseneEscapeReseneBowiealso crossover hues moving from greento blue, such as Resene Free Spirit. Our thirst for sustainability tricklesthrough into the 2012 colour range, with a palette that’s infused withearthy, neutral tones – showing ourgrowing appreciation for the earth andits resources. Wood tones are reflectedin beiges and browns and offset bysoft golden metallics, such as ReseneIgnition. Neutrals, browns and beigestend towards warmer, comfortingvariants, such as Resene Secret Roadand Resene Fantail.Greys are trending softer teamed withfresh whites, with the rapid rise inpopularity of Resene Thorndon Creamreflecting this trend.Off-whites are pure and uncomplicated, and there is a definite comeback of coolwhite, such as Resene Barely There, asa background neutral. Plain white, suchas Resene Half Alabaster, is clean andelegant, a stark contrast to the growingrange of blacks, such as Resene BlackSheep and Resene Blackout.Cosy, casual elegance, stability andfamiliarity are key trends for 2012, withcomfort playing a leading role.
