2006 annual report

LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR AND BOARD PRESIDENTWhile the year 2006 represented the 45th anniversary of Urban Gateways’founding, it served, too, as a bridge into the next chapter of this organization’slife. It was unquestionably a year of transition in which Urban Gateways’ bidfarewell to Executive Director Libby Lai-Bun Chiu. An inspired leader whoushered this institution through the past eight years, Libby ensured thatthe high-quality programming, essential research and powerful curriculumdevelopment that have been synonymous with the name “Urban Gateways”remained vital. With 2006 came an invitation to Urban Gateways to take part in apromising collaborative undertaking alongside our colleagues in the cultural, educational, and civic spheres. We were given the chance to work closelywith the Chicago Public Schools to systemically create opportunities forall Chicago public school children to learn through the arts. How perfectthen, that 2006 was the year when we first understood that in a small butextremely significant way, Urban Gateways had realized one of its dreams:An arts-infused school, Horace Greeley Elementary School, where childrenH Ken Bergren and Julie F. Simpsonin grades K through 8 achieve great academic success, was not only wellestablishedin Chicago, but was poised to help others enjoy the benefits thearts can provide. Our challenge now becomes one of delivering shared expertise andknowledge. The wealth of understanding that Urban Gateways has amassedover the course of its fifteen-year partnership with Greeley School must bemade available to others. There are scores of educational leaders anxious toembrace the arts as a window into the world of academic achievement; theymust now be given the chance to learn from us and from their peers.Like other trail-blazing guides in the world of learning, Urban Gateways hasgained a solid understanding of the processes and practices that, whenpursued courageously, offer innovative results. We are eager to embraceour next organizational chapter in which a good portion of our efforts willbe dedicated to assuming our rightful role in a crucial collective effort. Weremain committed to assisting our colleagues at CPS and our fellow culturalambassadors and purveyors of arts learning to fully realize our ongoingvision … the systemic delivery of an arts-rich education across the region forevery child in every school.Ken BergrenChair, Board of TrusteesJulie F. SimpsonExecutive Director

This scenario for many schools is a dream. For one Urban Gateways school in 2006 it becamea reality and one of our proudest accomplishments.E Luna Negra Dance Theater

Greeley Elementary School, located in Chicago’s Buena Parkneighborhood declared itself this year a school dedicated to art, culture, and world languages. “Without our partnership with Urban Gateways thiscould never have happened,” stated Principal Haydee Alvarez. “The culturalcomposite of our school has allowed us to develop a solid educationalcurriculum that affirms the cultural richness of Chicago. For our school, thearts serve as the catalyst in connecting the various cultural backgrounds ofour students and their parents.”For almost fifteen years, Urban Gateways has partnered with GreeleySchool in building an arts-based curriculum that serves as a foundation forlearning throughout the school. We began our work in the mid-1990s with performance-based programsand workshops that provided students with access to the arts. A learningcontinuum was developed, beginning with short-term programs, advancingto complex long-term partnerships that included extensive professionaldevelopment for educators, administrators, and parents; artist-in-residenceprograms for students in all classrooms; and the development andimplementation of sequential curriculum. When Greeley was designatedas a 21st Century Community Learning Center our programming extendedbeyond traditional school hours, fully engaging students and integratingparents into their children’s education.1011

As we aspire to attain this level of success with more and more schools, weare identifying essential components to build the infrastructure needed totransform all of our potential “Greeleys” into high-achieving, well-functioningarts learning environments:B Quality instruction by trained, professional artists and teachersB The Study of works of arts at the core of programmingB Recognizing the Value of discipline-based learningB Multicultural inclusion in all programmingB A Collaborative learning environmentB The nurturing of Imagination and CreativityB The Partnership between the classroom trio of teacher, student, andartist – supported by school administrators, parents, donors, programpartners, and Urban Gateways staff and board. The future of Urban Gateways centers on our ability to proactively nurtureother schools to become fine arts laboratories specializing in multiculturalarts that promote learning. Just as Greeley was once a dream, we continueto envision a vibrant arts culture permeating every school forevery child. With Urban Gateways, schools can build learning environments where:B Students develop their creative and aesthetic awareness in the literary, performing, and visual arts while increasing their capabilities in otheracademic areasB Teachers integrate the arts within their teaching methodologiesB Principals commit to recognizing the arts as a core academic subjectB Parents and the community value the arts in the educational processB And professional artists unveil the creativity in every child, every day.1213
