special projectsBlack CreativityThe Museum of Science and Industry’s 2006Black Creativity celebration highlightedthe contributions of African Americansand encouraged deeper interest in, andunderstanding of, black culture and heritage.Special programming for student and familyaudiences complements the exhibition. As inpast years, the museum contracted with UrbanGateways to provide the series. Performancesfrom our touring roster included: Images ofAfrica, Morikeba: Griot of Senegal, MotownAlive, Music of Bob Marley, African VillageFolktales, King Syncopation, TraditionalJamaican Music and Dance, The LargestAfrican Empire, and One World Dance. It wasthe largest contract in Urban Gateways’ historyof partnering with the museum.Children of UgandaThe matinee performance series featureda weeklong residency by Children of Uganda,a group of children ages 8 to 18 presenting anexhilarating program of music and dance fromEast Africa. In addition to the daytime studentperformances, three public performances werepresented at the Athenaeum Theatre.Wyland FoundationStudents from Nativity Blessed Virgin Maryworked with visual artist Jeff Maldonado onstudying colors, forms, shapes, and patternsfound in marine habitats in preparation for aproject with renowned marine life artist Wyland.Classroom teachers also had access to theOcean Challenge Curriculum. After their initialresidency with Maldonado, students workedwith Wyland on creating a mural that wasdedicated to the school.
