The advances inscience and navigation, coupled with advancesin reproduction through moveable type andthe engraving process, launched a new view ofEarth and its controversial place as an orbitingplanet. This exhibition from the Wendt Collectionpresents works pivotal to the developmentof maps with attention to the spatial andmathematical principles of Ptolemy, Macrobius,Galileo, Kepler, Newton and Halley, and theartistic convergence of printmakers and cartographersincluding, Holbein, Mercator, Ortelius,Visscher, and Coronelli. These colorful mapsdepict the guiding shifts in historical, religious,and cultural views of the world driven by thedesire for accurate cartographic records.This exhibition is organized and circulated bythe Sonoma County Museum.
