Theorigin of this historic society was a chance encounterof two artists painting on location in Rock CreekPark in DC in 1913. This led to additional paintingexcursions that were joined by other avid weekendpainters. However, its popularity was stifled byWWII and the modern art movement, whichlasted several decades. In the last 15 years, withincreased interest in realism and plein air painting, the society has enjoyed an enthusiastic resurgence. There is a considerable waiting list of interestedartists eager to become members.
