FarmTek
Keeping Livestock Fed During Droughts – The Hydroponic Solution
In the midst of the nation’s most expansive
drought of the last 60 years,
many farmers may feel that the futures
of their farms, and their profits, are out
of their control. Corn crops are quickly
deteriorating in the extreme, dry heat
and pastures are full of brown, dead
grass. Feed prices are on the rise and
some farmers are debating whether they
can afford to feed their livestock or if
they will be forced to sell.
With the drought forecasted to last
through October and uncertainty over future
weather patterns, forward-thinking
farmers are taking matters into their own
hands to ensure fresh feed is available to
their livestock, no matter the weather conditions.
They are achieving this by turning
to hydroponic fodder systems, such as
Fodder-Pro Feed Systems from FarmTek.
Fodder Explained
Fodder is any agricultural foodstuff
that is specifically used to feed cattle,
horses and other livestock. The term
refers to food given to animals, rather
than the food they forage for themselves.
Types of plants typically grown for fodder
include alfalfa, barley, oats, clover,
grass and wheat. When grown hydroponically,
it is most commonly used as
a feed supplement for livestock, rather
than a feed replacement. Hydroponically
grown fodder has been common for
years in Australia, Canada and Europe
and is now a developing trend for feeding
livestock in the United States.
Why Grow Fodder
Hydroponically?
Hydroponics, in the simplest terms,
is growing plants without soil. There
are many types of hydroponic systems,
but all have similar advantages, including
no pesticides or herbicides needed,
high yields in a limited space and up to
90% less water required compared to
soil production.
By growing fodder in these systems,
farmers will see increased yields of highly
palatable feed for their livestock. For example,
one pound of dry barley seed can
produce more than seven pounds of fodder.
Fodder that is grown hydroponically
has a digestibility averaging 75% to 80%;
the digestibility of field-grown grasses
can be as small as 30%. The higher nutritional
value of hydroponic fodder promotes
animal health.
A variety of seeds can be grown in fod-
der systems, including barley, winter and
red rye, oats, sorghum, wheat and more.
The nutritional content of the fodder will
depend on the seed. Depending on the
system and seed type, fodder can be ready
to harvest in as little as seven days.
FarmTek’s Fodder-Pro
Feed Systems
Fodder-Pro Feed Systems are state-ofthe-art
hydroponic fodder growing systems
designed to rapidly produce highly
nutritious fodder at a low cost, with
minimal labor. Fodder can be grown in a
Fodder-Pro Feed System year long, with
minimal water required, when housed in a
climate-controlled space. Utilize the fullsize
system’s seven-day growing cycle to
produce over 250 lbs. of nutrient-, protein-
and enzyme-rich fodder each day.
Mini and custom systems are also available
to meet any fodder demand.
The full-size system consists of seven
tiers of four 12’ long UV-stabilized,
NSF-quality, food-grade PVC channels
that sit on a heavy-duty galvanized
steel frame. It provides 336 linear ft. of
growing space. Featuring a hydroponic
nutrient film technique (NFT) recirculation
system, the Fodder-Pro eliminates
the need for overhead watering, reducing
humidity levels that may promote
fungus and mold growth.
A Fodder-Pro Feed System requires on
average less than an hour of daily maintenance,
but it is important to provide a
proper growing environment. Without
this environment, poor germination and
low conversions will occur, creating a
situation where mold can thrive and destroy
the crop. To prevent this, keep the
water clean with a balanced pH. The
area containing the system should also
be cleaned at least once a week.
Adding Fodder to
Livestock’s Diet
Typically, a fodder diet will consist
of 2% of the livestock’s live body
weight per day, but feeding hay or other
dry matter is still necessary to aid with
digestion. To feed the fodder, lay it out
in the pasture, feed troughs, buckets or
hay racks. Livestock should be transitioned
onto fodder over a week to tenday
period so that they can adjust to
the change in their routine. Fodder can
also be offered as a treat at first to help
livestock acclimate to the new feed. It
is always best to consult your veterinar-
ian before changing any feed regimens.
The Benefits of Fodder as a
Feed Supplement
Adding fodder to the daily diet of
livestock should increase all-around
physical wellbeing. It will result in
higher energy levels, while minimizing
feed costs. During times of heat
stress, feeding fodder will stimulate
the appetite, keeping livestock full and
healthy. Since fodder is fed soon after
it is produced, it will not get moldy or
dusty like traditional hay, resulting in
improved respiratory health in animals.
In addition to improving livestock
health, farmers will reap higher yields
and save considerably on feed and energy
costs when using fodder as a feed supplement.
The Fodder-Pro Feed System
typically utilizes low energy and water
consumption. Fodder can be grown year
long, regardless of climate, as long as the
system is located in a climate-controlled
environment. Because hydroponic systems
do not require large footprints, a
field’s worth of food can be produced in a
Farm & Ranch News www.fandrn.com
September / October 2012 (99)
building, barn or basement, reducing the
amount of land needed to produce feed.
Also, since all of the fodder produced is
edible, including the seed mat, waste and
spoilage are virtually eliminated.
The Future of Livestock Feed
With droughts becoming so extreme
that governments are declaring states of
emergencies, it is time for farmers to rethink
the traditional methods of feeding
their livestock. Growing fodder hydroponically
offers a solution to rising feed
costs. Fodder systems rapidly produce
large amounts of lush fodder in a small
footprint, allowing farmers to provide
livestock with highly nutritious greens
in their feed regimen, regardless of the
weather conditions.
FarmTek designs and manufactures a
line of fodder systems which can be customized
for any feed demand. FarmTek
also offers livestock housing, feeders,
waterers, fencing solutions and more.
E TIP, Inc.
stop filter fuel Gelling in Cold Weather
E TIP, Inc. says to help prevent diesel/
biodiesel fuel gelling in cold weather the
Universal Fuel Filter Preheater mounts
easily to the engine fuel filter. It is one
of their extensive line of products for cold
weather starting, Security, Safety and
Maintenance. Some of the more popular
products include the Cable Lock Alarm,
Personal Strobe Lights and Steering Controls
for heavy trucks.
Cold conditions often affect fuel flow
during start-up and in daily operations.
When it is cold enough to cause gelling
in the fuel over-the-road trucks, heavy
machinery, automobiles, generators and
other equipment that must operate in low
temperatures can become disabled. The
gelling plugs the filter preventing passage
of the fuel. The only solution is to
replace the filter or warm up the fuel until
it flows again. It sometimes requires
towing the equipment to an inside location
or bringing a heater to the equipment
site. Fuel filters for bulk tank dispensing
pumps can also be affected. See our new
Filter Heater for Bulk Fuel Tanks and
Dispensing Pumps. The costs related
to fuel gelling can become expensive in
downtime and in repair cost.
The Universal Filter Preheater offers
a simple solution. It is a thin, flexible,
silicone/fiberglass heating pad that easily
wraps around the metal filter housing to
maintain full contact and to evenly transmit
heat quickly through the metal of the
filter housing helping to avoid the risk of
fuel gelling. It converts the metal filter
housing into the heating element. It is an
electric blanket for the fuel filter housing.
Springs and nylon ties hold it in place
When it is time to change the filter element,
the Universal Filter Preheater
is easily released for transfer to the new
filter housing. Fuel gelling and related
problems are avoided.
Drawing 85 watts it is available in
several voltages: direct current 12v &
24v, and alternating current 120v & 240v
and a dual grid model combining the option
of powering with direct current or
alternating current in the same Universal
Filter Preheater. Measuring 4” X 7”
it is designed to fit a diameter of 2.5” to
4” (circumference of 8” to 12”). See it
on the website at http://www.etipinc.com
under Maintenance. The Universal Filter
Preheater carries a three year materials
and workmanship warranty. A standard
12v Universal Filter Preheater is
priced at $138 each.
The standard engine oil and hydraulic
Peel & Stick Fiberglass/Silicone Preheaters
also are being used to warm fuel
tanks. 120v they stick to the outside of
the tank and warm the fuel overnight.
No cutting or welding, just thoroughly
clean off the mounting area & stick it
on. The cold weather products offered
by the Universal Heater Co., Inc. help
improve starting and operations and bottom
line business performance. “THE
BEST WAY TO PREHEAT ALMOST
ANYTHING.”
Preheater for engines, hydraulic
systems, transmissions, gear boxes, etc.
Massey ferguson® introduces GC1700 series sub-Compact tractors
the third generation of classic, hardworking massey Ferguson tractors provides a rugged and reliable experience
DULUTH, GA — Massey Ferguson ® a
global brand of AGCO (NYSE: AGCO),
introduces the GC1700 Series sub-compact
tractors, which deliver hardworking performance
and reliability plus redesigned styling,
functionality and control placement,
making this Series of tractors easy to own
and a pleasure to operate. From gardening
to moving bulky material, whether the job
is commercial or residential, the GC1700
Series will get the job done right.
The new GC1700 Series can be
equipped to take on multiple tasks and
has the exceptional durability and performance
features expected from a Massey
Ferguson. This new offering includes
four models that replace the previous GC
range. The GC1705 and GC1710 TLB are
rated 22.5 gross engine horsepower and
the GC1715 and GC1720 TLB are rated
at 24.5 gross engine horsepower.
Engine features: a quiet and
efficient powerhouse
The GC1700 Series sub-compact tractors
effortlessly undertake a vast number
of projects, powered by the fuel-efficient,
three-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel engine.
The high-torque engine is protected under a
very functional, solid metal hood with a tilt
up design that makes access to the engine
quick and easy.
All four models feature a low-rated
engine rpm that reduces vibration and
noise, to improve engine life and decrease
fuel consumption. The radiator
and radiator fan are strategically placed
behind the engine, pulling hot air away
from the operator, keeping both the operator
and engine cooler.
Redesigned for greater operator
convenience and comfort
Guided by customer input and constant
testing, the design of the GC1700 Series
offers improvements that make the tractors
more convenient, comfortable and easier to
operate. A wide-open, clutter-free platform
allows the operator to move on and off the
tractor with ease and offers plenty of space
for natural leg movement. The new seat is
ergonomically designed with adjustments
to custom-fit any body profile for exceptional
driving comfort.
To improve overall operating performance
for multiple functions, the hydraulic
joystick has been moved to the right side of
the front console, putting the control lever
within easy reach of the operator. Its refined
linkage provides smoother operation
to reduce the amount of arm movement for
the operator. A new safety lockout lever
prevents the operator from inadvertently
bumping the joystick or operating the hydraulics
when in the locked position. Finally,
the loader and backhoe quick-attach
design allows the operator to effortlessly
remove each attachment when necessary.
Speed and control
The GC1700 features a dual-range hydrostatic
transmission with infinitely variable
speeds from zero to top speed in each
range. Redesigned hydrostatic foot pedals
are strategically located on the right side of
the platform, while the brake pedal is on the
left side. The foot pedals are spring-loaded
and are designed to return to a neutral position
when released. The cruise control also
has been redesigned and moved to the front
dash panel for easy access. This allows
effortless engagement by simply pushing
down on the orange handle once the desired
speed is reached. Pulling up on the handle
diamond W Corral
Diamond W Corrals introduces the
portable sorting and gathering system
by the original designer of the Wilson
Wheel Corral.
You will not believe the size of this
system! The ease of sorting your cattle
or horses in the field will amaze you!
No more gathering, loading, unloading,
sorting and then reloading. No more
stressing your herd to get them out of
the pasture. Thanks to Burlington Welding,
LLC, home of the Diamond W Corral,
those days are gone. One system,
one move, and you’re done and home in
time for lunch.
This is a goose-neck unit that opens
for access in or out of the front. There
is a total 16 gates throughout the system.
On each end of the alley there are two
sets of 6’ gates that open between the
split goose-neck hitch and the rear axle
pens measuring 15’ 6” X 15’ 6” with a
height of all panels at 6’. This gives the
rancher the ability to tie into the sorting
system with any type of portable corral
or stock trailer in the field.
A hydraulic system sets the unit
down on the ground, and when ready
to move, lifts it up for transport. The
hydraulic system is operated by a 12volt
battery charged with a solar panel
and the ease of pushing a button. All
systems are assembled with springloaded
latches on the interior gates
for added convenience. A 10’ gate
allows you to drive thru the alleyway
with a cake truck.
New Horizon Inc.
earth-friendly Way to Heat
New Horizon Inc. is announcing a new extended
line of Wood Gasification Boilers which
provide a safe and environmentally friendly
way to heat your home and domestic hot water
with wood and other biomass byproducts. The
boiler uses wood gasification combustion (with
a secondary combustion process) which gives a
high, overall heating efficiency.
BioMass Gasification Boilers utilize wood
(biomass) in the burning process, which uses the
energy contained in the wood with efficiency
– up to three times higher than traditional boilers
or wood stoves. In simple words, it releases
wood gas, also known as syngas or producer gas,
from biomass and burn it in a secondary combustion
process. Smoke and other emissions are
cut to a very low level, due to very high temperature
of secondary combustion, making our
boilers nature-friendly.
The wood gasification combustion technology
used in BioMass wood boilers is the
most efficient way to burn firewood. As a result,
our boilers use substantially less wood
than conventional wood boilers and outdoor
water stoves. Additionally, this high efficiency
burn technology produces little or no
creosote, virtually eliminating the risk of a
chimney fire and greatly reducing greenhouse
gas emissions.
Environmental Benefits
of Wood Gasification:
Reduce carbon dioxide emissions (Greenhouse
gas)
Reduce fossil fuel consumption
Reduce SO2 and NOx emissions (acid rain
gases)
Wood as a fuel is a good solution due to the fact
that it is a renewable resource like solar, water or
wind power. These energy sources will never be
depleted unless improperly taken care of.
industry teams Up With Farmers to
manage herbicide-resistant Weeds
Proactive weed management helps keep soybean fields clean.
(NAPS) – A combination of the latest weed
management recommendations and financial
incentives is helping farmers fight tough-tocontrol
and glyphosate-resistant weeds.
They’re participating in Roundup Ready
PLUS Weed Management Solutions developed
by Monsanto in conjunction with and
supported by university academics, agronomists
and other industry partners.
“Last year, more than 50,000 soybean, cotton
and corn growers participated and received financial
incentives totaling nearly $100 million to
help offset the cost of using qualifying, industryleading
residual herbicide products,” says Chris
Reat, marketing manager for Roundup Ready
PLUS Weed Management Solutions.
Midwest farmer Darrin Johnson follows the
weed management recommendations to help
control lambsquarters and waterhemp in his
corn and soybeans. “On our farm, we feel it’s
better to be proactive than reactive where these
weeds are concerned,” Johnson says. “Using
herbicides with different modes of action is a
great strategy, and the financial incentive we
receive is an added bonus.”
In the South, many cotton and soybean farmers
are seeing improved control of glyphosate-resistant
pigweed by participating in the platform.
“We have such high pressure from resistant
weeds in this area that it is critical that we use
residual herbicides,” says farmer Hugh Dollar.
“Without residual herbicides, we would not be
able to stay ahead of these weeds, which grow
two to three times faster than our cotton.”
Farmers can visit the site www.Roundup
ReadyPLUS.com to learn more about toughto-control
weeds, assess their risk of developing
weed resistance in their fields and
access weed management guidelines, local
agronomic articles and other weed management
resources.
Always read and follow pesticide label directions.
Individual results may vary. -
have donated 20 tablet computers to
the school district.
“I think it’s great,” said Dale Bernard,
superintendent of Geyser Public
Schools, about the wind farm. “They’ve
all been more than generous.”
As for the computer tablets, “School
just started and the kids are already using
them, Bernard said.
He also predicted the wind farm
“will have a good effect on the local
property taxpayers.”
Sam Milodragovich of Butte,
wildlife biologist for NorthWestern
Energy, said there is a potential for
deaths of birds and bats, but he said
Compass Wind has worked to reduce
wildlife problems.
He said the area has a “relatively
low numbers of bats” except during
migrations in the fall. He said sites
for three wind turbines were moved
to make way for a sharptail grouse
nesting site.
H & M ® Gopher Control
Pressurized exhaust kills Underground rodents
The patented H & M ® gopher
control system uses carbon monoxide
from pressurized engine
exhaust to kill burrowing rodents
such as gophers, ground squirrels,
moles, voles, prairie dogs and
ground hogs.
According to the company, exhaust
gas has long been one of the most
lethal and least expensive methods
to kill burrowing rodents. But until
now there hasn’t been an economical,
efficient delivery system.
Company owners, Allen Hurlburt
and Virginia Massey, said that the
PERC ® system (Pressurized Exhaust
Rodent Controller) involves
a 1/4 inch diameter steel wand that
is used to probe the burrow and
injects pressurized exhaust via a
hand piece valve that fills the burrow
with lethal concentrations of
carbon monoxide before the rodent
has a chance to either escape or
block the burrow.
An internal combustion engine,
that also drives a compressor pump
that pressurizes the exhaust gas to
110 psi in a storage tank, generates
the carbon monoxide.
Three basic models are available.
The PERC ® 412 is a trailermounted
unit with a 14 hp Kohler
engine and four reels each with a
50 foot hose and the hand probe.
The 412 features turf tires and
is designed to be pulled behind
an ATV. It sells for $8,295 plus
S&H.
The PERC ® 206 is a skid-mounted
unit with a 7 hp Kohler engine,
two reels with 50 foot hoses and
hand probes. It sells for $4,995 plus
S&H. There is a trailer available for
the PERC ® 206. This combination
is popular for use in vineyards and
other small acreage applications.
Price of trailer is $595.
The newest addition to the line is
the PERC ® 620. It is designed for
large acreage and custom operators.
With a Twin 20 hp Kohler engine
and a V4-70 cfm compressor pump,
the six reel 620 has tandem axles as
standard equipment.
Crop stands are not damaged by
the carbon monoxide injected into
the burrow, Hurlburt says. It is simple
to use and safe for the operator
as well as wildlife since there is no
poison bait or explosions involved.
No other control method is as effective,
efficient and as inexpensive to
operate as ours.
A PERC ® system can treat moderately
infested alfalfa fields at about
3.5 acres an hour with a single operator,
he adds. Each probed location
requires only about two minutes
injection time.
delayed Castration is A benefit
How much money would it take
for you to put an extra day in working
your bull calves. Study after study has
proven along with millions of castrations
per year that waiting to castrate
your bull calves prior to weaning will
get you up to 50 extra pounds per calf.
At a 1.65 per pound this will get you
an extra $825.00 on just ten head or
$8250.00 on 100 head.
Pretty good payday for a little
extra work we think anyway. We
were the first to make the products
to take advantage of delayed castration
when we started producing the
EZE bander in 1989 and since then
we have added two more castration
products to help you do the job
whenever it benefits you the best.
From new born to the big guys we
have you covered with the best cost
per head and warranty out there and
scientists look At Genetic Crops to beat drought
FORT COLLINS, CO (AP) – Colorado
scientists are looking at genetically
modified crops as a way farmers
can beat the drought as worries
continue about the safety of eating
altered foods.
Colorado State University professor
Phil Westra says attitudes are
changing toward crops that have been
altered to resist drought and pests
because of a continuing drought that
has slashed harvests and increased the
price of food.
Westra said a new type of droughtresistant
corn was introduced this year
that is already showing promise.
“Obviously, it’s going to be important
to be able to have those varieties in the
future if nobody knows if this is going
to be a one-year, two-year, five-year, 10year
drought. If the drought continues
for 10 years, you’re probably going to
see a lot more sympathy for genetic engineering
than if we had all kinds of rain
and all kinds of water,’’ Westra said.
The genetically modified foods
are showing up in everything from
cereal to eggs, and no warning label
is required.
According to KMGH-TV, corn and
sugar beets, two of the largest crops
in Colorado, are already genetically
altered and used by many farmers.
Farmer Dave Eckhardt said this
year’s harvest would have been worse
without limited use of “genetically
modified organisms’’ in crops, also
known as GMOs.
In addition to health concerns, opponents
are worried that seeds from
genetic crops will be dispersed and
make their way into organic crops, resulting
in mutations no one can predict
or control.
Last year, there was a political fight
in Boulder County over use of altered
crops. County commissioner Will Toor
said surveys showed residents split
over their use.
In response, Boulder County commissioners
approved a compromise
that allows GMO corn and sugar beets
but does not allow GMO alfalfa. They
also ruled that GMOs can only be
grown for two years out of a five-year
period on any specific plot. -
ionia garden helps Feed
ionia community
AP Wire Service
By Karin Armbruster, Sentinel-Standard (Ionia)
IONIA, MI (AP) – Families in need are enjoying locally
grown fresh, organic produce thanks to a number
of community members who have turned a weed field
into a flourishing garden.
Jim Killion, a member at Zion United Methodist
Church in Ionia, said in 2010 he came up with the idea
for a garden after the Zion Community Food Pantry lost
its grant for a food truck. He said he bought a plot of
land that May, made payments to the city and began
planting by June.
“I had the means to do it,’’ Jim said. “It just felt
right.’’ The garden spans 12,000 square feet and bears
produce including watermelon, tomatoes, onions, summer
squash, green beans, peppers, potatoes, snap peas,
strawberries, cucumbers, zucchini, lettuce, radishes
and herbs.
Harvesting takes place every Tuesday so the produce
can be transported and prepared for those in need to
pick up at the pantry Wednesday.
“It’s pretty humbling,’’ Jim said about the process
of growing the crops, taking them to the pantry and
knowing families are happy to have them.
Jim is not the only member of the community tending
to the garden, however. His wife, Gretchen, his
daughter, Julie, and Julie’s fiance´ Rob Wright also
have spent countless hours in the dirt.
In addition, Jim said he has been working with
Robbie Bradford out of the Ionia County Probation
Office to bring in members of the Ionia Treatment
and Sobriety Court (ITASC) in need of community
service hours.
“With the extra help we’ve had this year, we’ve been
able to build compost bins, take care of the weeds,
planting, harvesting and watering,’’ Jim added.
He said he hopes the court will keep sending people
to help out, because they begin to genuinely care about
the garden.
As for security, he said the neighbors have made
sure to keep a close eye on the plants and the fruits
they bear.
Julie said she is happy to know families in the community
are benefiting from their hard work.
“(What’s gratifying is) the purpose of why we’re
doing this,’’ she said.
Both she and Jim said they would love to have a
greenhouse to keep the garden running year-round
and would not hesitate to begin a second garden if the
volunteers were provided.
“I’m just thankful that I have the means of starting
something like this,’’ Jim added.
He and the other volunteers will likely be harvesting
throughout October or until the first snow falls and
have yielded hundreds of pounds of vegetables for the
Zion Community Food Pantry.
new Challenger® 500C series Combines boost
Harvesting Capacity, fuel efficiency
DULUTH, GA – Challenger ® (www.
challenger-ag.com), a global brand of
AGCO (NYSE: AGCO), introduces
new 500C Series combines that set a
higher standard for harvesting capacity
and fuel efficiency compared to previous
models, thanks to a redesigned
crop inlet and threshing system, plus
new in-line positioning of the industry-leading
AGCO POWER TM 9.8-liter
seven-cylinder engine. Both the 540C
[Class 7] and 560C [Class 8] combines
offer 350-bushel bin capacities and
best-in-class peak unloading rates of
4.5 bushels per second.
“The new 540C and 560C combines
feature an all-new multi-zone crop inlet
that improves capacity and control
of crop material in the segmented rotor
and concave sections, which we’ve also
redesigned,” says Kevin Cobb, product
marketing manager, combines. “These
changes, along with the repositioned
engine, boost throughput, reduce power
needs and dramatically improve overall
efficiency of the power train, reducing
fuel use.”
The redesigned threshing system
includes twelve modular concave sections.
This allows one person to easily
change out the individual concave
sections with a choice of three options
and fine-tune the machine for optimal
threshing performance. Consistent
threshing is delivered by the new Hframe-designed
concave support system,
which keeps concaves concentric
with the rotor throughout the adjustment
range, but also includes a unique
suspension system to allow large
Tier 4i engine with AGCO e3
technology for more power, less fuel
The AGCO e3 TM technology in the
AGCO POWER 9.8-liter, seven-cylinder
engine provides outstanding fuel
efficiency compared to other Class 7
and Class 8 combines. Advanced e3
clean-air technology minimizes fluid
costs by varying the diesel exhaust
fluid (DEF) rate based on real-time
emission measurements.
Horsepower ratings at 2,100 rpm for
the 540C is 370 HP (276 kW) with an
unloading boost of 426 HP (318 kW)
and ratings for the 560C are 460 HP
(343 kW) with an unloading boost of
502 HP (374 kW), respectively.
Fuel efficiency gets even better by
turning this impressive power plant 90
degrees, so the engine is in-line with
the rotor. As a result, 500C Series combines
achieve an engine-to-rotor transfer
efficiency that tops 90 percent. Inline
engine positioning offers several
other advantages, including requiring
fewer moving parts, which reduces servicing
needs and downtime.
The new engine alignment also
makes room for the V-Cool TM cooling
system, which draws air into the system
from the cleanest part of the machine
— at the top of the combine. The
V-Cool system is designed with a variable-speed,
reversing fan, which blows
chaff and dirt off the inlet screen. The
“smart” V-cool system measures ambient
air temperature, as well as temperatures
of machine functions, then
Challenger ® 500C Series combines deliver harvest capacity plus fuel efficiency, due to a redesigned crop inlet
and threshing system, plus new in-line positioning of the AGCO POWER 9.8-liter seven-cylinder engine
operates at the optimum speed needed
to maintain proper cooling. This reduces
power and fuel needs, especially
on cooler fall days. And because the
cooling elements are not stacked, as
found on conventional designs, chaff
is not trapped between coolers. This
virtually eliminates the need for cleaning
the cooling elements during the
harvest season.
partners to arrange for the release
of 209 shipments of American products
valued at more than $39 million
in 2012. The goods had been detained
at foreign ports of entry pending resolution
of various animal and plant
health questions. In addition, APHIS
has helped to open or maintain more
than $51 million in overseas markets
for U.S. agricultural products. Under
Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack’s
leadership, USDA has aggressively
worked to expand export opportunities
and reduce barriers to trade, helping
to push agricultural exports to record
levels since 2009. The work of USDA
agencies, including APHIS, and other
federal partners helps to prevent and
remove unwarranted barriers to trade,
saving and securing American jobs and
businesses, and supporting President
Obama’s goal of doubling American
exports by the end of 2014.
“APHIS works diligently every day
to help ensure overseas markets for our
country’s agricultural products,” said
Rebecca Blue, deputy undersecretary
for marketing and regulatory programs.
“In the past six months, APHIS has negotiated
to reopen the Chinese market
for U.S. log exports in a six-month pilot
program, facilitated the first export
of 1,400 cattle to Angola, helped California
producers ship their stonefruit to
important markets in Mexico, and arranged
for the release of six shipments
of cherries and $1.5 million of cotton
held at Chinese ports.”
APHIS addresses animal and plant
health concerns that limit the export
of American agricultural goods and
negotiates with international trade
partners to remove trade barriers and
resolve trade-related issues. APHIS
personnel stationed in countries overseas
work closely with foreign regulatory
counterparts to exchange infor-
mation on agricultural health issues
and ensure the safe trade of agricultural
products. By working on these
technical trade matters with overseas
officials, as well as within international
standard-setting organizations,
APHIS personnel are in key positions
to support U.S. agricultural exports
and ensure that trading partners adhere
to agreed-upon standards.
When American shipments are detained
at foreign ports of entry, APHIS
and other USDA officials negotiate with
international officials to resolve the issue.
APHIS’ team of technical experts
certify that U.S. animal and plant products
are free of pests and diseases and
meet the entry requirements set by our
trading partners. In negotiations to protect,
expand, and open new trade markets,
APHIS advocates on behalf of
U.S. agricultural industries to ensure a
free flow of American agricultural products
in international markets.
APHIS has launched a new website
that will contain trade related information
and accomplishments. The website
will help exporters find information on
APHIS’s services, including trade information
and regulations. It also serves
as the news hub for APHIS trade updates,
with links to trade-related feeds
from the APHIS’ Newsroom, Twitter,
and the USDA blog. The website is
located at: www.aphis.usda.gov/newsroom/hot_issues/trade/index.shtml
U.S. agriculture is currently experiencing
one of its best periods in
history thanks to the productivity and
resourcefulness of America’s producers.
Today, net farm income is at
near record levels while debt has been
cut in half since the 1980s. Overall,
American agriculture supports 1 in 12
jobs in the United States and provides
American consumers with 83 percent
of the food we consume, while
maintaining affordability and choice.
Strong agricultural exports contribute
to a positive U.S. trade balance, create
jobs, boost economic growth and
support President Obama’s National
Export Initiative goal of doubling all
U.S. exports by the end of 2014. -
Good-bye to Pocket Gophers!
Bye, bye, to your pocket gophers
and the damage they cause! If you
are seeing mounds, like the one in the
picture you have the cute furry friends
– pocket gophers. The mounds are
usually fan-shaped and tunnel entrances
are plugged, keeping various
intruders out of the burrows.
Identifying – Typically the pocket
gopher fur is brown. However, may
vary to black. Most pocket gophers
range from six to thirteen inches long
(body and head). Color of fur range
from nearly black to pale brown. The
adult male gopher is larger than the
female. They have small external ears
and small eyes. Their head is blunt
and you can always see their large
incisor teeth. The paws have large
sharp claws. The pocket gopher’s tail
is sparsely haired and works as a sensory
mechanism in guiding the gopher
while moving backwards through its
tunnel system.
Damage – Pocket gopher causes
major damage to any root system
from alfalfa to zinnias. They are
found in lawns, gardens, ditches and
agricultural crop areas. Damage can
occur to machinery, such as dulling
and plugging sickle bars, when
harvesting hay or alfalfa caused by
the mounds of dirt the pocket gopher
brings to the surface. Gophers damage
trees by stem girdling and clipping,
root pruning, and possibly root
exposure caused by burrowing. The
tunneling the pocket gopher makes
causes erosion in ditch banks and
earthen dams weakening these structures.
In irrigated areas their tunneling
can channel water runoff, causing
loss of surface irrigation water. In
addition, they may damage plastic
water lines, lawn sprinkler systems,
and buried cables.
Control – The main methods of
controlling the gophers are trapping,
gassing, and poison baits.
Traps are quick and positive when
properly set. They are a good way of
controlling gophers if you have only a
few gophers. The labor of setting the
traps every day can be time consuming
and costly. You will only get one
gopher per trap a day.
Gassing is of limited effectiveness
against pocket gophers. The gopher
will quickly plug off or escape the
runway when he senses the poisonous
gas is detected. Therefore, making the
use of gassing unsatisfactory.
Poison baits are easy to apply and
cost effective. There are anti-coagulant
baits that give some control. They are
more expensive to use as the gopher
must eat the bait three to four days
in a row, therefore more bait must be
placed in the runways. Plus you have
the added labor of checking to make
sure there is bait available every day.
The most effective, less expensive,
and least labor involved method of
treating for gophers is the strychnine
bait. The gopher only needs to eat
the bait one time and within five to 20
minutes the gopher is dead.
Fort Dodge Gopher Bait is a strychnine
bait and can be applied either
by spoon, hand-held probe, or tractor
drawn machine.
This is a general overview of the
gopher, how to identify the gopher,
the damage they cause, and different
methods of control. I hope this article
will be of use to you in your battle
with the gophers. If you would like
Coalition Urges Waiver Of rfs because Of drought
— petition asks epa For one-Year Waiver of ethanol production mandate
WASHINGTON – As drought conditions
become the worst in 50 years and
corn yields are expected to drop significantly,
a coalition of meat and poultry
organizations recently asked the
U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
(EPA) to waive the federal mandate for
the production of corn ethanol.
In a petition delivered to EPA Administrator
Lisa Jackson, the coalition
asked for a waiver “in whole or
in substantial part” of the amount of
renewable fuel that must be produced
under the Renewable Fuels Standard
(RFS) for the remainder of this year
and for the portion of 2013 that is
one year from the time the waiver becomes
effective.
The RFS requires 13.2 billion gallons
of corn-based ethanol to be produced in
2012 and 13.8 billion gallons in 2013,
amounts that will use about 4.7 billion
and 4.9 billion bushels, respectively,
of the nation’s corn. Some agricultural
forecasters now are estimating that just
11.8 billion bushels of corn will be harvested
this year – about 13 billion were
harvested in 2011 – meaning corn-ethanol
production will use about four of
every 10 bushels.
The RFS has “directly affected the
supply and cost of feed in major agricultural
sectors of this country, causing
the type of economic harm that
justifies issuance of an RFS waiver,”
said the coalition in its petition.
It pointed out that EPA was granted
the authority in the 2005 Energy
Policy Act, which set the initial RFS,
the fuels standard, to waive because
of severe economic or environmental
harm the annual volume of renewable
fuel that must be produced.
In asking Jackson to take prompt action
to provide a measure of relief for
livestock and poultry producers, the coalition
petition said, “[i]t is abundantly
clear that sufficient harm is occurring
now and that economic conditions affecting
grain supplies and feed prices
will worsen in the months ahead. Both
conditions provide an independent basis
for a waiver of the RFS.”
“America’s pork producers are extremely
worried, given the drought
affecting much of the corn-growing
regions, about having feed for their animals,”
said NPPC President-elect Randy
Spronk, a producer from Edgerton,
MN. “And their anxiety is compounded
knowing that the RFS requires corn
ethanol to be produced no matter what.
We’re asking EPA to give livestock and
poultry producers and, ultimately, consumers
a little help.”
“Relief from the RFS is extremely
urgent. This very short corn crop will
undoubtedly prove to be devastating to
the animal agriculture industry, food
manufacturers, food service providers
and consumers,” added Michael
Welch, president and CEO of Harrison
the livelihoods of family farmers are
all at risk. The chicken industry is
urging EPA to implement the law and
promptly grant a full or partial waiver
of the RFS. If not now, when?”
“I support American ethanol and
what it has done for rural communities
in Nebraska and in many other states
throughout the country,” said J.D. Alexander,
Nebraska cattleman and National
Cattlemen’s Beef Association
president. “What I do not support are
federal mandates picking winners and
losers and a federal government sitting
patiently by, forking over taxpayer dollars
to artificially inflate the price of
corn for livestock producers and other
end-users. I find it concerning to the
viability of the livestock industry that
these mandates are allowed to continue
today in the worst drought I have seen
in my lifetime. This isn’t rocket science.
Implement the law, waive the
RFS, let the market work and embrace
free market principles.”
“As a small, independent turkey
grower from Minnesota who buys
about 100,000 bushels of corn every
year, my family’s livelihood is being
threatened by the looming drought disaster,”
said John Burkel, of Badger,
MN. “The EPA granting a waiver from
the RFS is needed now. This is the only
immediate relief for this country’s livestock
and poultry producers. We need
to stabilize the markets. The reality is,
at these volatile, high prices, even the
most prudent, cautious farmer can find
themselves out of business.”
Medi-Dart Inc.
20 years Of Making your
Medication Go farther
Twenty years ago we developed
the Medi-Dart to treat our own
pasture cattle. We had sick and
sore animals in pastures with no
corrals. We were encouraged to
produce the Medi-Dart commercially
to help local cattlemen with
the same problem.
Here we are 20 years later still
producing, marketing and distributing
Medi-Darts with just the
two inventors and one long time
employee. We still use the darts
on our farm and still ask the neighbors
and our customers for input
on changes we have made to the
product. We listen to our clients
and count on their feedback. Satisfying
our customers continues
to be number 1. When you phone
Medi-Dart you can count on fast,
friendly service and the best advice
can offer.
The COMPLETELY REUSABLE
Medi-Dart syringe gives an intramuscular
or subcutaneous injection
using air pressure, provided by a
simple air pump. There is no cost
per shot. The injection, up to 30
cc, is completed in a few seconds
(approx. 10cc per sec). As the
plunger finishes the injection it
pushes out an ejector loop, around
the needle, releasing the syringe
from the animal. The syringe falls
to the ground, that animal has been
medicated. Sound easy? It is.
Medi-Dart offers three styles
suitable for any operation. The
Extension Medi-Dart gives the producer
a 6 foot or the NEW 10 foot
reach. The Bow and Arrow Medi-
Dart uses a 30 pound recurve bow.
The Crossbow Medi-Dart uses a
specially designed crossbow that is
adjustable. Because it is so handy,
the Crossbow Medi-Dart is the favorite
among cattle producers.
UW Lures Big Donors From
Dairy, Meat Industries
MILWAUKEE, WI (AP) – Paying
for new academic buildings often
requires universities to engage in
creative financing, and sometimes to
conduct ambitious fundraising from
special interests that could benefit
from the research produced there.
Fortunately for the University of
Wisconsin, the state has a vested interest
in cheese and sausages.
A dairy plant addition and a new meat
science laboratory are on the drawing
board for the University of Wisconsin-
Madison. Half the money to build them
is being raised privately by the dairy
and the meat industries, the Milwaukee
Journal Sentinel reported.
The $32 million Babcock Hall
Dairy Plant renovation and the $42.8
million Meat Science & Muscle Biology
Laboratory received preliminary
approval recently from the UW
Board of Regents. The Legislature
and the governor would need to sign
off on the projects, too, before they
could move forward in the 2013 state
budget cycle.
“These two projects are linked to
vibrant state industries,’’ said Heidi
Zoerb, a spokeswoman for the College
of Agriculture and Life Sciences.
Naming rights are available for
both projects. A $10 million gift will
name on the Babcock Hall project
will have to settle for a cheese vat
or an ice cream freezer. Both naming
rights have a suggested gift of
$250,000 to $499,999.
Babcock Hall will always be called
Babcock Hall to honor the late professor
Stephen M. Babcock, often
referred to as the Edison of the dairy
industry. He developed a milk fat test
in 1890 to quickly and easily measure
the quality of milk for butter- and
cheese-making so farmers could get a
higher price for better milk.
The dairy industry already has
raised $12 million of its $16 million
share of the $32 million Babcock Hall
project, which would renovate and
expand a 60-year-old dairy plant that
is best known among students for its
award-winning gourmet ice cream.
It also houses the internationally
known Wisconsin Center for Dairy
Research, which trains cheese-makers
and serves as “doctor on call’’ to help
develop new dairy products, including
award-winning cheeses. The center
supports Wisconsin’s $27 billiona-year
dairy industry, which employs
146,000 and is rapidly expanding to
international markets.
Money for the Babcock Hall renovation
has come from all over the
country, said Deb Wendorf Boyke,
communications coordinator for the
Wisconsin Center for Dairy Research.
The industry’s fundraising campaign
is headed by Lou Gentine, CEO of
Plymouth-based Sargento Foods Inc.,
and Dave Fuhrmann, president of Baraboo-based
Foremost Farms USA.
The campaign for the Meat Science
& Muscle Biology Laboratory is
headed by Kevin Ladwig, vice president
of Johnsonville, a sausage company
based in Sheboygan Falls.
So far, $7.3 million of the $20 million
private fundraising goal has been
met to help pay for the new $42.8 million
lab, Zoerb said.
“We have an enormous number of
meat processing plants in Wisconsin
– over 400,’’ Zoerb said.
dairy real estate trends
It is interesting what is being seen in
the real estate market for dairy farms.
DairyRealty.com continues to be the go
to website for the dairy farm market.
By the number of site and page hits to
DairyRealty.com, the hot weather and
the economic conditions has had its impact.
Buyers are looking for deals, sellers
are looking for top dollar and banks
are willing to deal on bank owned properties.
Money is available for the purchase
with 50% down and no guarantee.
Using a guarantee bank may go as low
as 20% down.
That being said, there is still a great
deal of interest in buying and selling
dairy farms. The main concern is getting
positive cash flows. Lenders will
work with producers who have high ethics
and minimum equity. Lender owned
properties are the best deals. The sellers
are coming to understand that “top
dollar” today is a lot different than “top
dollar” was before milk pricing became
so unstable. Priced right, the dairy will
sell, but it may take longer. The property
cannot be priced for what is needed, but
must be priced at its value. Value is what
a qualified buyer is willing to give and a
seller is willing to accept. Sellers must
ask themselves, “Do I want to sell my
farm or just have it for sale”.
Located 20 miles south of the World
Dairy Expo in Madison, WI we have our
finger on the pulse of the dairy industry.
UsdA Celebrates the start Of A Healthier school year for America’s kids
New Standards Ensure Students Are Offered Healthier, More Nutritious Foods In The Lunch Line
WASHINGTON — Agriculture Under
Secretary for Food, Nutrition and
Consumer Services Kevin Concannon
announced that America’s students will
see healthier and more nutritious foods
in the cafeteria as they return to school
this year. The new nutrition standards
for school meals, implemented as a
result of the historic Healthy, Hunger-
Free Kids Act of 2010, will help to
combat child hunger and obesity and
improve the health and nutrition of the
nation’s children.
“Improving the nutrition of school
meals is an important investment in
the future of America’s children,” said
Concannon. “We know that healthy
food plays a vital role in strengthening
a child’s body and mind and the healthier
school meals will help to ensure our
children can learn, grow, and reach their
full potential.”
Starting this school year, schools
will phase in the nutrition standards
over a three-year period. Schools will
focus on changes in the lunches in the
first year, with most changes in breakfast
to take place in future years. The
new meal standards:
• Ensure students are offered both fruits
and vegetables every day of the week;
• Substantially increase offerings of
knowledgeable in:
• Large & small dairy operations and management
• Cash flow projections • expansion proposals • Land acquisition
• Nutrition requirements • Animal Husbandry • Cattle acquisition
Dairy Realty says it all:
whole grain-rich foods and low-fat milk
or fat-free milk varieties;
• Limit calories based on the age of
children being served to ensure proper
portion size; and
• Focus on reducing the amounts of
saturated fat, trans fats and sodium.
The new meal requirements are raising
standards for the first time in more
than fifteen years and improving the
health and nutrition of nearly 32 million
kids that participate in school
meal programs every school day. The
Pittsburgh Power Inc.
High fuel Mileage And Performance diesels
You HAVE to let your engine
breathe! Over the years, we have written
many articles about the advantages
of straight-through quiet-performance
mufflers and the fuel mileage gains of
¼ to ½ mpg. This equates to a savings
of about $6,000 per year in diesel fuel.
That is why we design mufflers and
promote the Fleet-Air Filters made of
several layers of washable foam. This
is a lifetime air filter and will allow
the engine to gain another ¼ mpg in
fuel savings. However, there is something
else on the engine that needs to
breathe, and that is the crankcase, or
the oil pan area of the engine. Blowby
is a by-product of combustion and
as the piston is slammed down when
the injector fires, the air beneath the
piston and some of the combustion
that escapes past the piston rings is
blow-by, and must escape the crankcase
by way of the breather tube.
Years ago, back in the early 1980s,
the breather tube on the older small
cam and early big cam Cummins engines
would clog from oil deposits
and not allow the blow-by to escape
the engine. Being that the blow-by
continues, it has to go somewhere.
As the pressure builds up in the engine,
it will push the oil down the
valve stems and oil consumption will
occur, where you can see a bluish
smoke coming out of the stacks. The
majority of the blow-by will escape
up the turbocharger oil drain line and
force the oil out of the seals. Now
when we say seals in a turbo, we think
of the type of oil seal on the axles of
the truck because that is what we’re
all familiar with. However, because
of the tremendous heat inside a bearing
housing on a turbocharger, the
normal type of oil seal could not live,
so the turbo oil seal is actually a small
piston ring and exhaust pressure in
the turbine side of the turbo (exhaust
housing) and the compressed air on
the compressor side of the turbo (the
aluminum housing) help to keep the
oil in the bearing housing. The oil
comes into the bearing housing under
pressure and exits the turbo via gravity
in a whipped foamy state and must
have a drain tube no more than 30 degrees
off of vertical and the drain tube
has to be about 5 times the volume
of the oil feed line. So, the oil drain
tube has a very important function in
keeping the oil in the bearing housing
and out of the charge air cooler and
exhaust pipe. In order for the turbo
oil drain tube to properly perform its
function, the breather tube on the engine
must be able to breathe.
Now Caterpillar has installed a
blow-by canister on the Acert engines
due to the fact that a twin-turbo engine
develops more crankcase pressure,
and the canister is supposed to keep
the oil found in blow-by from traveling
down the tube and landing on the
street and accumulating on the undercarriage
of your truck. The Cummins
ISX engine has a blow-by filter on the
top left side of the engine and there is
a one-way valve in the canister filter
that could malfunction, creating excess
crankcase pressure in the engine,
enabling the filter to clog again, creating
the excess blow-by pressure in
the crankcase and causing the turbo
to throw oil into the exhaust pipe or
charge air cooler. Are you getting the
picture of how everything must work
together on the engine to allow it to
function properly?
On August 10th, Henry Good
called me from just south of Scranton,
PA, and said he had lost the Turbo.
As it turned out, the hose connecting
the charge air pipe to the charge air
cooler on the right side of the engine
had blown off the cooler. So, he loosened
the clamp and installed the hose
and as soon as the turbo developed
boost, it blew off again. Again he reinstalled
the hose and never made it
up the ramp to the interstate.
So, I had him remove the elbow
from the compressor side of the turbo
and rev the engine to about 1500
RPM and shine a flashlight across the
outlet of the compressor housing and
look for oil. He found oil. Well, by
now it’s 10 p.m. and I’m ready for
bed, so we resumed this problem in
the morning. Now Henry needs another
turbo and this is not a stock
turbo on the ISX, it is a Holset, just
not the original one so we contacted
Chuck at CG Customs out of Scranton
and he put us in touch with Mike
and he went to where Henry was and
removed the leaking turbo and installed
the new one we shipped to CG
Customs. The next day, Henry Good
brings the leaking turbo to our shop
and we found nothing wrong with the
turbo other than the oil coming out of
the compressor housing. Upon inspection
of his W-900L Kenworth,
we found nothing wrong. The air fil-
ters were clean. He wasn’t in a rain
storm: Wet air filters will cause the
turbo to leak oil into the compressor
housing as well. Upon inspection of
his crankcase breather, we decided to
remove the crankcase breather filter
(after more than a half million miles,
it was rather dirty).
I must admit that I did not know
there was a filter on the breather tube
of the ISX (I don’t get to spend as
much time in the shop as I would like
to, because I have to answer phone
questions from owner-operators). So
now every time an ISX comes into our
shop with a crankcase ventilation filter,
we will be removing it for inspection.
The cost of this filter is $77.51,
but this is economical compared
to the price of a new turbocharger.
Henry lost three days of downtime
and spent about $380.00 in labor to
have the charge air cooler removed
and cleaned of the oil. It’s always
SO much cheaper to do preventative
maintenance as opposed to waiting
for the problem to surface. We now
have the ISX crankcase breather filter
in stock.
canela russet – a new Light russet potato For the Fresh market
by Robert Davidson, CSU Extension
Seed Potato Specialist
Canela Russet has been grown by
San Luis Valley growers for the past
few years, sometimes with great
success, but often with problems
related to its individual cultivar
characteristics. This cultivar has
the potential for producing a high
percentage of US No 1 tubers in a
very tight size profile, but overall
yields may be less than other cultivars.
Even though yields may be
less (380 cwt/a +) Canela Russet
has the potential for long term storage
and has been very profitable for
many growers when sold late season
(early May to late June). This cultivar,
however, has seen its share of
problems in the last couple of years.
This article will help to put some of
these issues into perspective and,
hopefully, provide some insight
into understanding the cultivar so
that each grower will have a greater
chance for success.
Late storage to early season:
Canela Russet is a cultivar which has
a long dormancy (147 days average
from the time of harvest to sprouting)
which translates into a need to
warm the tubers prior to planting
(50-55 o F for two weeks) to assure
proper germination. This is especially
critical when deciding to cut
the tubers to help promote growth
of each eye. Cutting is problematic
since the tubers are very smooth
and have few eyes, with more eyes
concentrated near the bud end of
the tuber. It is very easy to cut the
seed too small producing seed pieces
with no more than one eye. This
in turn produces a crop with a high
percentage of single stems. During
the early trials for this cultivar, the
number of stems per plant was 1.9.
This is quite low, so efforts must
be made to increase the number of
stems per plants from 1.9 to near
3.0. This requires the use of slightly
larger seed pieces (3.0 to 3.5 oz)
and cutting no larger than splitters
when available. Additionally,
warming the seed prior to planting
and avoiding fresh cutting the tubers
can pay big dividends in terms
of stem numbers.
Growing season: Nitrogen management
is critical during the season.
Total N rates should not exceed
140 to 160 units total for the season
including residual from soil and N
from irrigation water. These levels
appear to be critical for proper
growth during the season and also
for the finishing of the vines during
the late summer. We know that
excess N applied later in the season
has a dramatic effect on the vine
maturity and on tuber maturity coupled
with skin set. The past couple
of years, late season environmental
factors have delayed vine maturity
on those fields with excess N present
and made for very difficult tuber
skin set conditions.
Harvest/Storage: It is crucial for
this cultivar to have the appropriate
length of time for good skin set, assuming
that the vines are actually
maturing and ready to go down.
Four weeks is not too long for skin
set, so proper planning is essential
in terms of N management and vine
killing. In the past two to three
years many growers have experienced
problems relating to Fusarium
spp. and tuber dry rot. After much
investigation, we believe that these
problems are related to harvesting
immature tubers which bruise more
easily and provide wound areas for
the pathogen to enter. Additionally,
very cool late season harvest temperatures
set the tubers up for greater
wounding and, thus, more potential
for dry rot. While this cultivar
is not resistant to dry rot, it is no
more susceptible than many other
common cultivars raised by growers
in the San Luis Valley. There
is one notable difference, however.
It appears that Canela Russet takes
slightly longer to heal than for example,
Russet Norkotah, which can
provide greater likelihood of Fusarium
spp. becoming established in
the tuber. Also, keeping early storage
temperatures in the 50 o F range
for longer than two to three weeks
can have a very detrimental effect
on the amount of dry rot seen in the
crop, especially when dealing with
immature tubers. Finally, growers
should recognize that this cultivar
will store for a very long period, but
only if the crop has been properly
managed during the season and the
tubers are mature.
The use of Canela Russet as a
long term storage alternative for
SLV producers can be very successful
when following the appropriate
management guidelines. Please
keep in mind a few rules as you
produce this cultivar. Larger seed,
more eyes/seed piece, warming
seed prior to planting, N management,
proper vine maturity and vine
kill with plenty of time for skin set,
good harvest practices and proper
early storage management. Following
some of these practices can help
you become more successful with
this cultivar and increase both yields
and profits. -
High fuel Mileage And Great running diesel engines
Hard Work Pay Off! Who said there is
no work in this great country? Who thinks
you can’t get ahead in the trucking industry
today? Eight months ago we had the opportunity
to meet two young brothers who own
a small trucking and construction business.
These two brothers happen to be 25 and 22
years old and are now the proud owners of a
Pittsburgh Power built 389 Peterbilt Glider
Kit. Their names are Brad and Josh Deeter
of Deeter Farms and Construction in Cooperstown,
PA, 40 miles north of I-80 on Rt.
8 in northern Pennsylvania. These two boys
were raised on the family farm of 900 acres
growing soybeans and corn. Their grandfather
Paul Deeter and their father Craig not
only worked the farm they decided to drill oil
wells in the late 1970’s and purchased some
trucks and lowboy trailers to haul their own
equipment. Back then the oil and gas industry
was doing ok in Franklin and Oil City,
PA, and the Deeters would do construction
for the industry. Once the oil industry left
that part of PA the father decided to close
down the trucking and construction business
and just work the farm. So bankruptcy was
close, and Paul Deeter called Brad who was
a junior at Penn State University studying
mechanical engineering and said if you want
the business come and get it. This was 2009
and Brad decided he wanted the trucking
and construction business and still wanted
to finish his degree at Penn State. Now he
has a full time job trying to resurrect a defunct
business along with studying to become
a mechanical engineer. His commute
to the business was 150 miles each way
and he did it; he finished college, married
a beautiful women by the name of Allison,
while rebuilding the trucking and construction
business and avoided bankruptcy with a
hard intelligent work ethic. When Josh was
a junior in high school he joined the company
working in the evenings, weekends, and
summers building ponds for frack water for
the oil and gas industry in the Washington,
PA area. They moved their office to Hickory,
PA and since 2009 have accumulated 28
trucks, bull dozers, excavators, skid steers
and 58 employees. Of the 28 trucks 17 are
2008 and newer and are equipped with the
DPF filters and EGR. Two or three of the
trucks are in the shop for warranty repairs
all the time and five more are running with
the check engine light on waiting to get into
the truck dealership.
Some of their earth moving equipment also
have the Tier 4 emissions and drives them crazy
waiting for the re-gen to complete so they
can go back to moving dirt.
Part # 138-4611. Recommended by Pittsburgh Power (not a sleeve gasket)
Fed up with all of the emission equipment
on their trucks and in need of a new
heavy haul truck they contacted Pittsburgh
Power Inc. to build them a new 389 Peterbilt
glider kit. This truck is equipped with an
ISX 600 Cummins, Pittsburgh Power Computer,
Fass Fuel System, Mercury filled engine
balancer, 46,000 rears, 3:70 gear ratio,
18 speed transmission, 8”stacks with quiet
spools in the stacks. Great care was taken
by the mechanics and service manager of
Pittsburgh Power to make the engine installation
as clean as possible. We wanted to
keep all of the wires and hoses hidden as
much as possible for the clean look and I
think we obtained our goal.
This truck was NOT financed by a bank or
loan institution, the Deeter Boys paid cash for
this truck! Like all growing companies they
are in need of a few good local truck drivers
and they are an all Kenworth fleet except for
one new Pete. If you are interested in working
in the Washington, PA area and being home
every night, even though the days are long
hours, please e-mail Allison.deeterfarms@
gmail.com
Caterpillar exhaust manifold gaskets; if you
are changing the exhaust manifold gaskets on
a C-15 Caterpillar and the gaskets have the
sleeve that protrudes into the exhaust port
please do NOT use those gaskets. The sleeve
breaks off and wipes out the turbine wheel and
now the turbo is junk and there is NO warranty
on those gaskets. Always install the Cat gasket
without the sleeve.
It has been brought to our attention that the
Kenworth T-660 and the T-800 are now available
as Glider Kits. That is great news; 2 years
ago I had several long conversations with the
Vice President of Kenworth and explained to
him the demand for glider kits. I’m glad they
saw the light!
Please don’t think that building a glider kit
is more economical than buying a new truck,
it’s not, in-fact it’s more expensive, however
you do not have the problems associated with
the new trucks, so you are truck trouble free
with more power and no break downs. ISX-
EGR, DD5-EGR Engines, if you are having
problems with these engines we can repair
them and your problems are solved, however
we need the truck at our shop in Saxonburg,
PA. There are too many small items that must
be addressed so doing this type of work at
your home is nearly impossible.
Enthusiasm drives owner-operators and
small business, the problem is government
employees have no enthusiasm and they
control us.
IT’S THe PITTS
by Lee Pitts
“Is she open or bred?” It’s a simple
question really. What the inquirer is wanting
to know is if the female farm animal in
question is in the family way. The answer
depends on who’s asking.
The cattle feeder does not want a heifer
to be bred because a feedlot is not a good
place for children to grow up. If a cattle
feeder had his way all heifers would be
spayed when born, which would put us all
out of business in one generation. Intelligent
cattle feeders demand to know the
pregnancy status of the heifers they buy and
this has created some creative thinking.
“They have been run to be open,” is the
typical cowboy answer. Translated to truth
this means, “I have no idea.” Or that the
bovine equivalent to teenagers, a bunch of
yearling bulls, has been shacked up with
the heifers for the past six months.
Ranchers have thought up some interesting
answers to the “open or bred” question...
The old bull did break in but he was
crippled and couldn’t do anything.”
“The bull and the heifers he was with
for the past ninety days come from different
breeds and I’m sure they wouldn’t
mix. He’s from the same family and I
doubt they’d engage in incestuous activity.
Their personalities clashed.”
In all honesty, my royally bred cows
did not find my neighbor’s inferior bull
all that attractive.”
“That sterile old bull is harmless as a
gopher snake. He’s blind in one eye and
can’t see out the other. He had as much
chance of breeding those heifers as a Duroc
boar would.”
ensured the size and weight of the rollers
apply the ideal pressure for pressing
in rocks and smoothing the field without
compacting it. And because each landroller
is built with shorter segments, it more
easily follows contours of your land.
When Rite Way started to manufacture
the MAXI rotary harrow, they made it affordable,
and included those innovations
that would make your life easier. For example,
by allowing you to change the tine
angle from your tractor cab, it’s simple
There was a no trespassing sign on
that pasture.”
“Those heifers have been saving themselves
for a $10,000 purebred bull.”
Females found in male company are often
referred to as “California opens.“ In
other words, they’ve only been exposed
to a bull. Yeah right. Like you’re 33 year
old son or daughter who’s been living with
someone for ten years. They only shacked
up to save on household expenses.
“I never saw nothing happening,” is another
common rejoinder. This always reminds
me of the time I loaned one of my
black-faced rams to a neighbor to breed his
white-faced sheep. He complained my ram
never did anything and all his ewes were
getting was companionship. So my friend
introduced a white faced buck as back up.
Come lambing time all the babies had black
faces. I guess my buck wasn’t sleeping on
the job after all.
Of course, it works the other way.
Some rancher silly enough to buy heifers
he has to calve out usually wants them
bred when he buys them. The big difference
in price one gets for a bred heifer
versus a yearling feeder heifer calls for
some originality and marketing.
“Is this heifer bred, you ask? Sure.
Judging by the way those bull calves were
following her around this morning I’d say
she got bred this very morning.”
Oh well, a calf and a rain are welcome
any time, I suppose.
Then there are times heifers may actually
be bred but the parentage could be
called into question. “Of course she’s bred.
to change the aggressiveness of the harrows
as your field conditions change. So
whether you want to lightly harrow your
field or smooth out big lumps and dig up
roots – you can make the adjustment on
the go.
Rite Way Jumbo Harrows are one of
the most popular heavy harrows in the
industry because of those same user-focused
innovations. And with the continued
enhancements Rite Way is making to
its Jumbo Junior midrange harrows, this
versatile product promises to follow in
its big brother’s footsteps.
From the first rock picker that Rite
Way built 40 years ago and which continues
to set the standards today – to the
Crush-Rite that Rite Way was asked to
develop for organic farmers, practical
and farmer-friendly innovations have
always been a way of life and a way of
doing business for Rite Way. You can
Accidents Of Biology
We leave every tenth calf of ours a bull at
branding time and we run all our cattle together
all the time and never introduce any
outside blood.”
You’ll probably get a calf all right, but it
might be born with two heads or five legs.
Early in my cattleman career I asked an
old snake if his heifers were bred and he
avoided the question thusly: “Listen, son.
Those heifers had two choices. They could
get bred or become hamburger. Now which
would you pick?”
Smart ranchers always hedge a little to
account for accidents of biology. “I cannot
guarantee she’s safe in calf but she’s been
exposed.” (There’s that word again).
The most honest answer I ever heard
when asked the pregnant question was.....
“How do you want her?”
nM river Water remains At Center Of Water dispute
AP Wire Service
TRUTH OR CONSEQUENCES, NM
(AP) – A dispute over whether New
Mexico’s river water is being improperly
funneled to Texas or if enough groundwater
is being preserved for farmers along the Rio
Grande was front and center at a hearing before
state lawmakers. About 30 lawmakers
from around the state met Aug. 27 to listen
to opposing sides of a major legal dispute
over the Lower Rio Grande Basin, the Las
Cruces Sun-News reported.
The debate centers on a 2008 settlement
between Dona Ana County and irrigators in
Texas’ El Paso County. New Mexico Attorney
General Gary King challenged the settlement
in a federal lawsuit last year, claiming
the agreement undermines New Mexico’s
water future along the Rio Grande.
Assistant Attorney General Steve Farris
told the lawmakers that the Rio Grande is
flowing “bank-to-bank’’ south of Elephant
Butte Reservoir and while the water belongs
to New Mexico, it’s being allowed
to flow to Texas.
“One-hundred percent of that water is
New Mexico’s credit water that’s being taken
from New Mexico without New Mexico’s
permission,’’ he said.
Farris said the irrigation allotment
given by an El Paso irrigation district to
its members is about three times what the
Elephant Butte Irrigation District gave to its
members. He said the disparity is one of the
reasons the attorney general’s office is suing
the federal government and the two irriga-
tion districts over the 2008 agreement.
Farris added that New Mexico farmers
have been increasing their use of groundwater
for irrigation to make up for less
river water and that’s having an impact on
groundwater levels in the basin.
Elephant Butte Irrigation District’s irrigation
season lasted only weeks this year. In
past wetter years, farmers have been able to
call for water deliveries for months. Rep.
Joseph Cervantes, D-Las Cruces, said Dona
Ana County irrigators, including his family
farm, didn’t get the full allotment of river
water they were promised in 2012.
District water engineer Phil King said
that was the case for farmers who placed
their water orders at the last-minute, and
the district ran out of supply.
District officials argue that the 2008
agreement heads off a legal battle between
New Mexico and Texas that could ultimately
harm Dona Ana County farmers by cutting
off their right to use groundwater.
“If the operating agreement goes away,
we will be in the U.S. Supreme Court,’’ said
Steve Hernandez, the district’s attorney.
He said the fight would be complicated
by the fact that Dona Ana County belongs
to New Mexico because of its geographic
boundaries, but also to Texas for water
management reasons, thanks to the structure
of a historic, interstate compact governing
use of the Rio Grande.
“In the end, nobody takes care of us,’’
Hernandez said, referring to the irrigators
in Dona Ana County. -
sea Minerals fA
Sea Minerals FA works as a soil fertility
supplement that re-mineralizes
the soil. It comes from processing very
clean sea water and contains 85 or more
minerals and trace minerals in the same
proportions that those same minerals
occur in the blood of healthy animals.
In addition to the positive impact
sea minerals have on the plants and
land, it is a much less expensive alternative
to commercial fertilizer. The
farmer can fertilize an acre for $8 per
application with a suggestion of three
applications per year for $24/acre/
year. It is applied as a foliar spray on
green plants. Not only is it a cheaper
method, but Sea Minerals FA has a
lasting positive effect on the microbes
in the soil. Sea Mineral nutrients stay
in the soil from year to year and build
and enhance the soil.
Sea Minerals FA can be used without
any other fertilizer with good results.
It can also be mixed with other
ingredients, such as weed killers or
fertilizer in the sprayer.
Sea Minerals FA also makes great
free-choice mineral for cattle. Cows
will consume one pound per month
on average. They will not require any
other mineral or salt for a savings of
over 50%. It has been shown to decrease
cell count in dairy cattle. It
plays a key role in producing better
quality milk and butcher beef. The
cows and calves stay healthier. Check
Safejary – Back Injury Prevention
Jary Winstead – Work Safety Services, LLC
Preventing back injuries in the workplace
is essential in maintaining a healthy and productive
workforce. For many of us, back
pain is a daily part of our life. According to
statistics, back injuries account for nearly 27
percent of all injuries and illnesses involving
days away from work, and cost the nation an
estimated $20 to $50 billion a year.
According to the Bureau of Labor and
Statistics (BLS); 36 percent of the sprain,
strain, and tear cases, the back was injured,
while 12 percent involved the shoulder.
Your back is made up of an intricate
set of muscles, bones, nerves, and supporting
tissues and you use it every day in
ways you never notice. Usually the only
time you think about your back is when it
hurts. An injured back affects your ability
to move your limbs, your neck, your hips,
and your head.
How can a workplace
prevent back injuries?
Encouraging employees in maintaining a
healthy life style, and exercising, can play
an important role in keeping your employee’s
backs strong, healthy, and flexible. A
well exercised back is less likely to be injured.
Use these safety tips for your next
safety training topic, and reinforce the importance
of back injury prevention.
Injury Prevention
Look over the object and know your
load before you try to lift it?
• Test every load before you lift by pushing
the object lightly with your hands or
feet to see how easily it moves. This tells
you about how heavy it is.
• A small size does not always mean a
light load.
• Large, awkward, items can be more dangerous
to lift, even when the load is light.
• Make sure the weight is balanced and
packed so it won’t move around.
• Loose pieces inside a box can cause accidents
if the box becomes unbalanced.
Is it easy to grip the load?
• Be sure you have a tight grip on the
object before you lift it.
• Look for the best hand positions
• Clean any grease or oil from the area
before putting your hands there.
• Use gloves to assist in your ability to
grip the object
Is it easy to reach the load?
• To avoid hurting your back, use a ladder
when you’re lifting something over
your head.
• When loading shelving, store heavier
objects in the middle shelves, and lighter
objects on the upper and lower shelving.
• When accessing items from the back
of a pickup bed, never reach over the sides
of the pickup bed or the tailgate. Bring the
items to the rear of the bed, and open the
tailgate. This will reduce shoulder and
back strains.
• Get as close as you can to the load.
Slide the load towards you if you can.
• Don’t arch your back – avoid reaching
out for an object.
• Do the work with your legs and your
arms – not your back.
The best ways to pick up an object?
• Keeping your body straight when lifting
will reduce strains and sprains.
• Use slow and smooth movements.
Rushed, jerky movements can strain the
muscles in your back.
• Keep your body facing the object while
you lift it. Twisting while lifting can hurt
your back.
• Place your feet a shoulder width apart.
• Keep the load close to your body.
The farther away the object is, the more
weight and strain you’re putting on your
back and shoulders.
• “Lifting with your legs” should be
done only when you can straddle the load.
To lift with your legs, bend your knees, not
your back, to pick up the load. Keep your
back straight.
• Try to carry the load in the space between
your shoulder and your waist. This
puts less strain on your back muscles.
Team work
• Always get help when lifting. Never
be embarrassed to get assistance.
• Lift as a team.
• Countdown from 3 when lifting to as-
Kern county tractor parts
If you are looking for a supplier of
used, rebuilt and new agricultural parts,
your search is over. Kern County Tractor
Parts has dismantled over 10,000 tractors,
combines, swathers & cotton pickers. We
disassemble each unit, clean & inspect every
part. In most cases we have the part
sure you lift at the same time.
• Walk slowly & never rush.
Know your route
• Know your pathway
• Make sure you have enough room to
lift safely. Clear a space around the object
before lifting it.
• Carry the item in such a way that it does
not block your view of your intended path.
• Look around before you lift, and look
around as you carry. Make sure you can see
where you are walking. Know where you
are going to put down the load.
• Avoid walking on slippery, uneven surfaces
while carrying something.
• Clean up spills promptly, and when
absorbents are used, do not leave it on the
floor to create further slip or trip hazards.
• Turn with your feet and legs to change
direction with the load, never twist your
back or shoulders.
• Avoid obstacles whenever possible.
• Carry the object so both team members
can see the route.
How can you avoid back injuries?
• Warm up. Stretch your legs and your
back before lifting anything.
• Pace yourself. Take many small
breaks between lifts if you are lifting a
number of things.
• Don’t overdo it – don’t try to lift something
too heavy for you. If you have to
strain to carry the load, it’s too heavy.
• Never rely on a back belt support to
protect you. It hasn’t been proven that back
belts can protect you from back injury.
• Get help before you try to lift a heavy load.
Cowboy Logic
by ryan M. Taylor
TOWNER, ND – Some people like carnivals
and midway rides, some people don’t.
I’ve always been one of the likers. Something
about the thrill seeking expositions traveling
the countryside amuses me, just like it’s supposed
to in the amusement park business.
Maybe it’s because my birthday always
coincided with our state fair. I spent a lot of
birthdays marking another year on my personal
calendar while hitting the midway on the
fairgrounds. The games of slim chance, the
food with questionable health repercussions,
the rides that you can’t help but inspect and
check the welds on as they whirl you around.
This year, I shared the whole experience
with my kids. Mostly, with the boys, because
we were all over 48 inches tall and could do
the really scary rides. I did ride the Ferris
wheel with our little girl though. She was
tall enough to get on that ride, but still little
enough that she buried her face in my chest
Fehr Cab Interiors
Get A quieter, Cleaner Cab environment With a new fehr Cab kit
Is your cab environment healthy and
quiet? Have you ever noticed how the
wall and ceiling insulation deteriorates
into powder, sifting into dusty particles,
making your cab environment dirty and
noisy? Or have the mice chewed up all
the foam in your combine cab? Fehr Cab
Interiors Co. has manufactured replacement
acoustical cab kits to renew the cabs
on most tractors and combines since 1988.
When the insulation deteriorates, you also
lose all the acoustical noise control that
you need to keep the sound decibels down
that can damage your hearing.
Fehr Cab Interiors kits consist of original
material pre-cut to replace the old, deteriorated
acoustical foam on the walls and headliners of
agri-equipment, making the cabs quieter and
improving appearance. FCI kits also include
the best aerosol adhesive made for foam to
metal contact and easy-to-follow instructions.
Pre-cut floormats are available for most cabs,
Carnival Thrills
On The State Fair Midway
as I held her near the top.
I rode the Tornado, the Hurricane, the
Starship 2000, and others with my 8-yearold
and 5-year-old boys and my nearly
teenaged nephew who joined us.
It was one of our first midway ride riding
experiences all together as a family. That’s
probably a good thing because when I tallied
up the cost for the “ride all day” wrist
bands for my wife and I, our three children
and our nephew, it came to $180. And that
was with the Co-op Day discount! Paying
that tab is what gave me the chill for our day
of thrills and chills on the rides.
Genetic code
There’s affection for carnivals in my blood,
though, that helped me get over the sticker
shock. I found an old letter in our family
photo box to prove up my genetic carnival
connection. It was written to the elder cousin
who was the father figure in my dad’s life af-
ter his father died when he was just a toddler.
It was written by one E.L. Pheister of
Northern Exposition Shows, Hazelton, ND,
to Gordon Taylor in 1942. The letterhead
said his show featured the highest Ferris
wheel ever exhibited in North Dakota,
and his agent’s name was Dusty Rhodes—a
great name for an agent in the traveling exhibition
business in the dirt road days.
It seems Gordon, my horse ranching
ancestor from Culbertson, MT, was toying
with the idea of getting into the show
business and Mr. Pheister had a “nice chair
plane to sell” for $2,000, provided Gordon
would book it on the show. It was in fine
shape, he said, and came with everything—
truck, fences, lighting, engine.
The Northern Exposition was having a
tough time keeping workers and operators
on the show circuit during World War II.
The letter said the draft took about half of
composed of industrial quality matting bonded
to closed-cell insulation. Fehr Cab Interiors
has expanded their product lines to include
most preformed headliners, which are vacuum-formed,
including the AC 8000-series,
Ford 7700 & TW-series, the Case-IH Magnum,
Ambraco
Announces new tamatec+ tM feature to John
deere brand net Wrap - Hi-UV Protection
By Mike Bieber,
Marketing Director
AMBRACO is pleased to introduce
the new TamaTec+ TM feature to John
Deere brand Net Wrap. This new
feature will be available in Edge to
Edge and CoverEdge John Deere
net wrap.
TamaTec+ TM is a combination of
innovations in the formula of the basic
polymer group and the manufacturing
process of the net. These two
advancements combined allow more
feet of net to be wound onto the roll
without adding weight or changing the
physical dimensions of the roll. The
end result is more time baling and less
time loading wrap into the baler.
AMBRACO introduced the XXL
version of John Deere Edge to Edge
and John Deere CoverEdge three
years ago. The longer length rolls has
proven to be the “choice” of the end
user because a lower cost per bale is
realized.
For the 2012 use season the following
sizes will be available:
TamaTec+ TM
67 Inch JD CoverEdge 9,000 Feet
51 Inch JD CoverEdge 12,100 Feet
64 Inch JD Edge to Edge 9,700 Feet
48 Inch JD Edge to Edge 12,000 Feet
XXL
67 Inch JD CoverEdge 7,800 Feet
51 Inch JD CoverEdge 11,000 Feet
64 Inch JD Edge to Edge 8,800 Feet
48 Inch JD Edge to Edge 13,200 Feet
The new TamaTec+ TM feature is easily
distinguished by the solid wide green
stripe on the right hand end of the roll.
This new Zebra stripe pattern on the
roll has been altered to make it easier
to identify which direction the bale was
rolled to make unrolling easier when
feeding. Of course, the wide stripe is
always installed with the wide stripe to
the right hand side of the baler in the
direction of travel. This helps the operator
make sure that when handling the
roll that the roll is positioned properly
for installation into the baler.
Additional improvements to the
“handle system” make it easier to
remove the handles without using a
knife. A simple “twist” of the end of
the handle strip unlocks the handle.
When buying net ALWAYS check
the length of the roll to make sure
that a comparative purchase is being
made. As usual, at the end of the day
it is not about the price of the roll
but how many feet are on the roll and
how many bales can be made with
one roll.
The John Deere Brand of net wrap
has UV stabilization ingredients to
ePA Grants exemption to MsU Ag technology to fight Potato Virus
Contact: Barry Jacobsen
BOZEMAN, MT – A biological pesticide
developed at Montana State University
will enter the fight this month to control a
threat to Montana’s $38 million seed potato
industry after receiving a provisional goahead
from the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency.
EPA’s emergency exemption for Certis
USA’s product BmJ WG will allow Montana
growers to use the agent discovered
by researchers with MSU’s College of
Agriculture to combat potato virus Y, or
PVY. The virus has shown a resurgence
in seed potatoes in the United States, said
Nina Zidack, director of the MSU Potato
Lab, the facility that certifies that seed
potatoes grown in Montana meet very
strict disease tolerances.
“The growers are certainly very enthusiastic
for the arrival of any new tool to reduce
infection from PVY,” Zidack said.
The “Section 18” regulatory exemption
spurred BmJ onto the commercial market
for Montana seed potato growers months
earlier than a normal EPA registration process
would have permitted.
Barry Jacobsen, a professor of plant sciences
and plant pathology in MSU’s College
of Agriculture, discovered BmJ in
1994 during efforts to tame outbreaks of
Cercospora leaf spot in northeast Montana.
By isolating from the healthy plants
in otherwise devastated fields, Jacobsen
discovered a bacterium he dubbed Bacillus
mycoides isolate J, or BmJ, that could trigger
the plants’ immune response to various
pathogens. In the research Jacobsen has
led since, BmJ has shown an astonishing
ability to control plant diseases caused by
fungi, bacteria and viruses.
A biological control – as opposed to
an industrial chemical-based pesticide –
BmJ induces what scientists call systemic
acquired resistance in plants. The bacterium
has the potential to be an important
disease-control tool for growers of a wide
variety of crops, Jacobsen said.
That promise prompted Jacobsen and
MSU to patent the discovery. Certis licensed
the technology in 2011 and is in the process
of clearing the EPA regulatory hurdles required
for the product’s commercial release
in the U.S.
Facing increased pressure by potato virus
Y in seed potatoes, and the difficulty in controlling
the aphids that spread the disease,
Jacobsen and Zidack asked the Montana Department
of Agriculture to petition the EPA
for what is known as Section 18 emergency
exemption on BmJ.
Section 18 of Federal Insecticide, Fungicide,
and Rodenticide Act allows the EPA to
allow an unregistered use of a pesticide for
a limited time if the EPA determines that an
emergency condition exists.
Jacobsen said the problem is the possibility
that potato virus Y could disrupt the
cycle of production in the certified seed potatoes,
which must meet minimum requirements
for disease tolerance. Growers begin
the four-year cycle of seed potato production
with what is called nuclear generation
seed – a product that has been certified as
free of any virus or bacterial diseases by
Zidack’s lab.
“The emergency is, if you miss enough
generations, you have to start all over
again,” Jacobsen said. “So this year’s
crop is critical to protect. And based on
three years of field research on BmJ in potato
crops, we believe that it will give the
farmers a much-needed boost in the fight
against potato virus Y.”
Montana is an important source of seed
stock for U.S. potato farmers. Zidack said
MSU College of Agriculture Professor Barry Jacobsen holds a sample of an agricultural disease-fighting technology
that could save farmers around the world millions of dollars. MSU research has shown the technology, a
naturally occurring bacterium dubbed BmJ, works on a wide array of crops and diseases and initiates an innate
immune response by activating a gene found in most plants. It was granted an emergency exemption from EPA
registration for use to combat potato virus Y infections in Montana’s seed potato crop.
more than 12 percent of potatoes grown in
the United States comes from the certified
seed potatoes produced in Montana.
There are 52 families growing seed potatoes
in Montana, with the largest production
coming from the Gallatin Valley. Additional
seed potato acreage is located in Beaverhead,
Madison, Broadwater, Lake, Flathead,
Deerlodge, and Kinsey counties.
In June, the EPA granted a Section-18
exemption that calls for the use of BmJ on
up to 2,675 acres of seed potatoes in the
If you are considering upgrading your
ground drive planter to hydraulics, you need
to consider our electric planter drive system.
It is more accurate, removes high maintenance
chains and bearings, offers more functionality
and most likely less cost than a hydraulic
drive and row shutoffs combined.
Graham Equipment has an electric planter
drive (patent pending) now available for all
planters replacing the need for any ground or
hydraulic drive. An electric motor on each
row is controlled by our micro-processor
based drive system which gives Precise Seed
Placement, Variable Rate and Row Control.
state. The first shipments of BmJ will land
on the shelves of Montana agricultural supply
stores this week. Jacobsen said he was
glad the technology will have its official
debut in Montana.
“Since we discovered it in Montana and
we did years of research on it here, it’s nice
that its first commercial use will be by Montana
farmers,” Jacobsen said.
Staheli West, Inc.
dewPoint 6110 steams Across the West
a revolution For hay operations From oregon to texas
Just 18 months ago there were only six
of the new DewPoint 6110 machines in
existence in several western states. Currently
there are 42 machines working
in nine western states with more on the
way. “These are not BIG numbers considering
the potential market, but we are
moving forward at a fast pace to meet the
developing demand”, says Dave Staheli,
founding President of Staheli West, Inc.
in Cedar City, Utah. “We will be very
busy this winter.”
“Our best sales tools are the people
who have purchased DewPoint machines
and put them to use. When we get a new
contact we simply give them a list of Dew-
Point owners. After they talk with a few
of these owners they are generally ready to
join the ranks.”
“This is a highly specialized business.
Our top priority is to keep our customers
moving if they have a little problem. The
result is a 100% customer satisfaction rate
as far as we are aware. Here are comments
from just a few of them.”
Ben McIntyre, Idaho – “It’s a whole
shift of how you put up hay. We really
really really like it. We wish we would
have gotten into it sooner. We’ve seen
all of the benefits. Our bale weight is up
[and] we’re about a 20 point difference on
relative feed value. We’ve opened up our
window of making hay so big…that it’s
almost unlimited. It took a huge variable
out of putting up hay.”
Perry Van Tassel, Idaho – It’s an expensive
machine, I’m not going to say
that it’s not. But I paid for my machine
in one cutting last year. I’ve baled 600
acres in a little over 30 hours, and I figure
I would have baled for 3 hours with [natural]
dew. When you want to go bale, you
just go bale. It used to take me a good ten
days to bale my hay, now I do it in 4-5.
After baling with this machine, I NEVER
want to bale without it again.”
Ryan Schwebach, New Mexico –“The
DewPoint machine has made my life so
much easier. It’s taken the stress out of trying
to get the baling done. It’s a whole new
level of management. My hay quality has
increased by 25% on average over last year.
My bale weights for 4x4 bales have gone
from the 1,750 lbs. last year to 1,900 lbs.
now. The biggest money maker out there
with this machine is the fact that you are not
held up, you don’t have to wait to bale. I
have shaved two days off every cutting this
year. At the end of the year I will have an
additional ½ - ¾ ton of production because
of that. It is like ‘Cookie Cutter’ production,
I don’t know how else to say it. It Works.”
Garrit Bakker, Nevada – “It’s been
perfect, let’s put it that way. You just pick
a time you want to go bale, and you just go
bale hay. I like it so well I’m going to get
me another one.”
Jeff Wood, Utah – “I’ve picked up
at least 100-150 pounds per bale. I used
to think it was all water weight, but it’s
not. You take a look at the leaf in those
bales, and you understand exactly where
it’s coming from. You can put up hay 10-
12 hours instead of 2-3 hours per day if
you’re waiting for dew.”
Sam Halterman, Utah – “It expanded
our baling window by five to ten hours a
day and you still bale hay with leaf on it.
The expanded baling window is worth a
lot. It’s been great for us.”
Mark Dunn, Nevada – “With our
situation, we needed quality, and to be
able to count on it. As dry as it is here,
at least first and second cutting, I’m not
sure how else we could do it. For most
people, I think it’s going to come down
to how people want to run their operation.
For us we’re trying to get by with
as little equipment as possible. This is
perfect. We have friends that are running
seven [balers] at a time, and they are
Farm & Ranch News www.fandrn.com
September / October 2012 (99)
looking at changing out to two [balers],
and two steamers. I think it makes a lot
of sense.”
Don Roberts, Utah – “We pull into
a pivot now with the two DewPoint machines
and we are finished in 2 hours. We
can keep doing that as long as we want to
each day but my objective is to bale 500
acres each day with the two DewPoint
machines. These machines have taken
the pressure off from the baling operation
completely”.
Replacement Flighting Supply
Giving you the “edGe”
Replacement Flighting Supply has been
manufacturing auger flighting for more than
28 years. R.F.S. is a division of Top Flite Corporation
and located in Aurora, NE. Over
the last 28 years, we have expanded from our
original location in Aurora and have added
two facilities in Princeton, IL. Our goal is to
provide our customers a quality cost effective
product with quick service.
By keeping a large inventory (more than
1200 sizes) in stock, we can process and
ship most repair orders on the same day. If
customers need a size that we do not have in
stock, we can usually get the order made and
shipped out within just a few days. From
our centralized locations, we can ship orders
to all parts of the country and the world
in a quick and simple manner. We utilize
the United Parcel Service to ship the majority
of our small repair orders and work with
most LTL carriers for larger orders.
We are always striving to produce the best
product for our customers, and are constantly
researching and developing new ideas for the
auger business. We developed and patented
the process with which we roll our “Super-
Edge Flighting” TM . “Super-Edge Flighting”
is rolled so that the outer edge of the flighting
is up to 50% thicker than conventional Helicoid
flighting.
With our process, we can put more material
on the outer edge where most of the wear
occurs, thus giving our customers augers a
longer life span. With today’s farm economy
and new machinery prices, we know that the
farmers want to and need to get the most out
of the life of their equipment.
Between our three locations, we manufacture
continuous rolled flighting in both
standard Helicoid and “Super-Edge”, we
also make heavy duty Sectional flighting
and wound helicoids flighting made from
bat stock. We manufacture continuous
flighting out of carbon steel and also type
304 stainless steel material and sectional
flites from carbon steel, stainless steel, and
abrasive resistant material.
We manufacture flighting that ranges in
size from 1.5 to 2 inch outside diameter up to
40 inch outside diameter. We range in material
thickness of 1/8” thick to 7/16” thick in
continuous flighting and from 3/16” thick to
1” thick in sectional flighting.
(NAPS) – For the nearly 70,000 U.S. communities
threatened by wildfires, it isn’t a matter of if, but when fire
will be a natural occurrence in their ecosystem. Wildfires
cost billions of dollars each year in suppression costs and
damage to homes, infrastructure, the economy and resources.
In addition, wildfires put both civilian and firefighter
lives at risk.
But there is help.
The nation’s leaders in wildfire mitigation have partnered
to develop Fire Adapted Communities, a prefire strategy to
help communities at risk of wildfire save lives and reduce
risk to homes, infrastructure and resources.
The U.S. Forest Service and the National Fire Protection
Association partnered with a coalition of other prominent
nonprofit organizations and government agencies to create
the Fire Adapted Communities initiative.
The campaign website, www.Fireadapted.org, provides
straightforward information on national programs, tools
and funding sources to help communities at risk from wildfire
prepare for fire before it starts. The program takes a
community-based approach, encouraging homeowners,
land managers, civic leaders and first responders to take
proactive steps to make their communities fire adapted.
The Ad Council has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service
to help deliver the Fire Adapted Communities message
nationwide. This national public service advertising
campaign raises awareness that those living in fire-prone
communities must prepare in advance to mitigate wildfire
damage when it occurs. The more proactive actions a community
takes, the more fire adapted it becomes.
Partnering to Reduce Wildfire Risk
According to U.S. Forest Service Chief Tom Tidwell,
the campaign will help individual homeowners and communities
safeguard their homes from wildfire threats. Said
Tidwell, “We are pleased to partner with the Ad Council
and the National Fire Protection Association to help educate
communities – especially those next to wooded areas –
on simple steps they can take to help protect their property
and families when wildfires strike.”
A History of Collaboration
The campaign was created pro bono by advertising
agency Draftfcb, which has worked with the Ad Council
and U.S. Forest Service for more than 68 years, to address
the issue of wildfire prevention with the iconic character
Smokey Bear and his famous tagline “Only You Can Prevent
Wildfires.”
Said Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council,
“We hope that our efforts will influence property owners
and community leaders in fire-prone areas to take the
necessary steps to prepare in advance of a wildfire, improving
the safety and resiliency of their communities.”
