Diamond Shelters offer a number of advantages
over conventional buildings. The
structures allow in an abundance of natural
lighting while blocking harmful ultraviolet
rays. Diamond Shelters provide the most
cost effective space for a clear span structure.
They can be erected in a very short
period of time, which reduces construction
costs. As a complete building, their
fire hazard rating is comparable to or superior.
Because of these advantages, Diamond
Shelters are versatile structures that
are suited to a wide range of applications.
They are ideal for housing livestock, dairy,
hay or grain, and machinery storage. They
are being used in the commercial, industrial
and mining sectors as warehouses and
manufacturing facilities.
Diamond Shelters are available in sizes
ranging from 15 feet wide to 160 feet
wide and whatever length is required.
the Talladega Speedway.
The SumaGrow treated portion is
treated with SumaGrow only and no
other inputs. Mr. Lynch was so pleased
with how it looked that he was excited
about sharing these results with other
farmers and ranchers. -
with
sumagrow
The Single Hoop shelters, 15 feet to 38
feet wide, have a rafter made of a single
structural tube. The Welded Truss shelters,
28 feet to 160 feet wide, have a rafter
with a truss design. Both types of shelters
have Ponywall, Freestanding and High
Profile Models.
The tubing used in the structures is
made of North American produced steel
with yield and tensile strengths that allow
the structures to withstand heavy stress
loads. The steel can be powder coated
with a variety of different colors. The
steel structures are covered with a fabric
made of a weave of double stacked, high
density polyolefin slit tapes, also produced
in North America. The covers come in a
number of different colors.
Diamond Shelters offer customization
of their structures. Some of the alterations
that have been done include end
L & S Farm Supply
“the Latest in Cattle fly Control”
In 2012, the ultimate fly control
system for cattle called “The Terminator”
was released for sale by L&S
Farm Supply.
This innovative piece of equipment
was field tested on a cattle farm in
east central Minnesota in 2011. The
study consisted of 100 head of Angus
cattle and yielded results that astounded
the designers and the farmer
beyond anticipated expectations. The
weaning weights averaged 55 pounds
heavier over the previous fall weights
when the bull calves were sold off.
By mostly eliminating the fly and pest
problems the cattle faced on a daily
basis, they expended significantly
less energy maintaining comfort levels
adding dollars to their marketable
weight. These weights were significant
enough that they elicited curiosity
from the local stockyard, as they
were some of the best spring calves
that had been through that year!
This patented design is the perfect
solution for any farm or ranch. The
Terminator’s heavy-duty construction
will withstand rubbing, kicking and
leaning and the thick rubber tray will
resist deterioration from exposure
to the elements. Forklift openings
designed right into the body allow
a tractor or skid-loader to move the
equipment to any pasture. The Terminator
is solar powered so it never
needs an electrical outlet. The Terminator
is built with heavy gage steel
and durable powder coating for years
of trouble free service.
The on-board electronics will sense
each cow as it visits the mineral tray.
The motion of the animal triggers the
light misting of insecticide, which is
applied evenly across the back and
neck of the animal. The Terminator is
also fitted with three outriggers, which
allow the misting of other cattle in the
immediate vicinity congregating to
use the mineral tray.
The Terminator comes with a comprehensive
assembly and operations
manual and two people with minimal
tools can assemble the unit in less than
one hour. Each Terminator comes with
a single bottle of concentrated insecticide
that mixes with water to yield
hundreds of gallons of effective control.
A farm or ranch with 100 head of
cattle can expect to control flies and
other pest insects for approximately
$60.00 each grazing season.
The Terminator is an absolute must
for any cattle rancher or farmer. It
will eliminate flies and ticks PERI-
Berry farmer recognized
By: Margaret Fogarty,
Farm Credit
In celebration of the Farm Credit System’s
95th anniversary, Farm Credit is
recognizing agricultural producers
through the Producing Excellence program.
Using a series of customer profiles,
Farm Credit is highlighting 95
successful farmers and ranchers during
its 95th anniversary year.
Jimmy Carter operates Southern
Belle Farms in McDonough, GA. He
was selected to be featured as one of
Farm Credit’s profiles because of his
diversification and innovation.
Jimmy is a sixth generation farmer
and long-time board member of Ag-
South Farm Credit, joined his father
and uncle on the family farm in the
1970s. Over two decades later, Jimmy
has transitioned from the dairy busi-
for excellence
ness to the feed business, and over
the next several years, expanded further
into beef cattle and hay. Jimmy
wasn’t done diversifying though – he
established an artificial insemination
business in the 1970s, which has since
evolved to primarily providing insemination
supplies to local farmers.
Jimmy is not alone in his drive for
diversification. His wife, Kathy, built
a successful catering business, Farm
House Catering, which she sold two
years ago to a long-time employee.
Their son, Jake, started bringing new
ideas to the farm soon after college: he
planted a “pick-your-own” strawberry
operation on two acres, which was
so successful he later expanded the
strawberry acreage and added blueberries
and blackberries on an additional
two acres. This winter they are adding
peach trees to the operation.
Perhaps one of Jake’s biggest diversification
efforts was opening the
farm for agri-tourism in 2005, a business
that has grown to host several
thousand visitors in a single weekend.
In addition to activities including a
petting zoo, pedal bike track and corn
cannon, the Carter’s create an intricate
corn maze each year. In 2008, their
maze gained national attention on
ESPN when the local college sports
announcer featured in the maze announced
his retirement. Their 2011
maze focused on breast cancer awareness.
Southern Belle Farm is also an
event center, hosting large and small
groups for everything from children’s
parties to corporate events and weddings,
up to 1,000 guests at a single
event. The farm also has a passion
for providing educational opportunities
for school children where they
see a cow being milked, pick cotton,
strawberries, and pumpkins, and many
other farm activities.
In the Carter’s latest development,
they’ve expanded their agri-tainment
operation through the Christmas holidays,
now selling fir trees, decorations
and wreaths and offering hay ride tours
of the farm. This expansion effectively
makes the Southern Belle Farm
a year-round agri-tainment facility,
providing a consistent income stream
for this innovative family.
As for the future, Jimmy says, “Looking
back, it’s hard to imagine how we
got to where we are today. Looking
forward, who knows what we’ll be doing
next. It’s exciting to see the potential
we have.” -
up with two AGCO 7444 4x4 balers.
“This machine, I really believe is going
to change the way we put up hay in
New Mexico” says Doug, it is a very
practical alternative for us. Instead of
having to get up and check hay in the
middle of the night, we just wait until
the afternoon sun gets lower in the sky
and start in baling.”
Doug continues, “It’s been a real
Godsend this year to be able to have
this kind of technology because there
have been a lot of nights this year that
we had no dew at all. It’s not magic but
it sure helps the condition we can put up
hay in and make it a lot better feed.”
Perry Van Tassel, Hay Farmer
and Dairyman said, “After baling
with this machine, I NEVER want to
bale without it again.” Perry received
his new DewPoint 6110 (Pictured on
this page) in May 2011 and used it exclusively
with his MF Hesston 2190
4x4 Cutter Baler to bale all the hay on
his 2,200 acre farm in Paul, Idaho this
year. “This machine paid for itself in
my 3rd cutting alone. I had only three
hours of decent dew during the whole
crop but I baled every day. The last
day I baled and hauled the last of my
hay into the barn and it started raining
the very next day. I could have never
gotten it up in time with natural dew.”
Don Roberts, Hay Farmer and
Dairyman operates 3,500 acres with
his father, Gordon and son Ben, in
the Parowan Valley in Southern Utah.
Don bought his first DewPoint 6110
machine in the fall of 2010 and operated
it with one of his MF Hesston 2170
3x4 balers through the 2011 season.
While his first machine was being
built Don used a neighbor’s Dew-
Point 6110 in the 2010 season to bale
his 2nd crop hay that had been rained
on. “Hay prices were tough that year
but it turned $80 feeder hay into $110
hay that cutting. I got $30/ton more
for that hay than I would have without
the ‘steamer’ and I had enough tons of
that kind of hay that the increase in the
value of that one crop paid for my new
DewPoint machine.”
Don purchased a second machine
this year which his father Gordon
proudly operates alongside Don or
Ben now. Don says, “We pull into a
pivot now with the two machines and
we are finished in two hours. We can
keep doing that as long as we want to
each day but my objective is to bale
500 acres each day with the two Dew-
Point machines. These machines have
taken the pressure off from the baling
operation completely”.
PowerFlex Fence TM
Powerflex PolyBraid, neW PowerPost
and electrifiable Hi-tensile Woven Wire
PowerFlex PolyBraid is the newest
generation polywire. The conductive
filaments, either 9 strands
of stainless steel or a 6 strand stainless
steel and 3 strand tinned copper
mixed metal, are tightly braided with
a high quality poly product giving it
greater breaking strength, more visibility,
and superior conductivity
than other polywire products. It is
abrasion and kink resistant which
contributes to a longer life span. A
1320’ roll fits on the PowerFlex
Geared Reel or most standard size
reels, 2640’ fits on mega reels, and
the new PowerFlex PowerPost (portable,
combination anchor/end post
and reel holder) handles up to 3 reels.
Progressive graziers will appreciate
the quality of this PolyBraid. Because
the filaments are protected by
the braided configuration, there is
far less chance of broken filaments.
Unlike a twisted polywire where
the flow of energy stops at a break,
the flow of energy in the PolyBraid
would be picked up again when
other filaments are crossed. This is
an unparalleled product at a very affordable
price.
Another product unique to PowerFlex
Fence is the superior quality,
hi-tensile woven wire with fixed
lock knot. It is 12.5-gauge hi-tensile
wire, minimum 180,000 psi
breaking strength, with outstanding
quality coating. Guaranteed
rust resistant for at least 30 years, it
can be fully electrified. The price
is a pleasant surprise as well. It is
perfect for keeping livestock in and
predators out!
TOWNER, ND – I was honored
to give the Memorial Day address in
West Fargo, ND, at the Veterans of
Foreign Wars Arthur W. Jones Post
7564. It was a day of remembrance
and gratitude, and the hall was filled
with veterans, families and citizens
ranging in age from young children to
our greatest generation.
I’ve always found a lot of meaning
in the Memorial Day programs I’ve attended
in towns both large and small
across North Dakota. Whenever I speak
at one, I have to admit to the listeners
that I’m humbled by the invitation to
speak because I’m not actually a veteran
myself, but I was raised by and around a
lot of humble veterans in my family.
They were part of what I call my
family fortune. Our family fortune
didn’t lie in stocks and bonds or pieces
of gold and silver, it was a fortune of
Family Fortune
More Valuable Than Gold
people and personalities who would
gather around the kitchen table to recount
stories, not coins.
I always felt particularly fortunate
because I was one of the very few in my
age group who was raised by a father
who was a combat veteran of World
War Two. The secret to that circumstance
was only that Dad waited until
he was 37 to marry and was 48 years
old when I was born. So while some of
my generation might have had a grandfather
who served in WWII, I had a father
who was in the Philippines, New
Guinea and the Japanese occupation.
I also had a bunch of uncles who
served and fought in that war. Of the
six uncles I had on my mother’s side of
the family, five of them were a part of
the war. Everyone who could serve, did
serve. Their service ranged from North
Africa, Italy, the Battle of the Bulge, the
Aleutian Islands Campaign, the Pacific
Theatre, the Merchant Marines and the
Norwegian Resistance Army.
Some of their areas of service are
not so well known. The Aleutian Islands
of the Alaska Territory actually
had foreign occupiers on American
soil. The Merchant Marines were in
charge of supplying the war effort and
had the highest percentage of war related
deaths of any branch of service.
One in 26 mariners aboard ships died
in the line of duty. The Norwegian Resistance
was the service of a teenaged
Norwegian who would later marry my
aunt when he came to America. The
little known Norwegian Resistance was
a story of underground guerilla fighting
and sabotage, and deserves the credit
for crippling Germany’s nuclear program
as Axis and Ally raced to build
the first atomic weapon.
I learned a lot when these uncles and
veterans gathered around our kitchen
table and talked of the Depression, the
war, the homecoming and the lives
they led. Like a lot of veterans, they
were often most content in silence of
what they had seen and experienced
half a world away from their farms,
ranches and homes.
But you would catch the occasional
reminiscence of some humor or cama-
raderie they shared with fellow soldiers
in their worldly adventure. And,
on other occasions, I would catch a
small glimpse of the sadness and trauma
that still haunted some of them,
like my Dad, even fifty years after
he came home from the fighting and
the dying. I knew then that not every
wound of war bleeds or leaves a scar
that we can see. Some are the wounds
we cannot see, but they are painful
wounds just the same and deserve our
care and compassion.
That’s why Memorial Day is observed,
not celebrated. That’s why we
gathered on that day to remember the
soldiers who never came home. We
realize that wars, even when won, are
still about loss for many families and
for our close knit communities.
God bless the soldiers lost and the
families who mourn them, and God
bless the veterans of every conflict who
are with us still.
educing Operator fatigue, And Boosting Comfort
the spraCoupe 7660 makes it easy For applicators to get in the Field and Work Long hours
One of the many features on the SpraCoupe 7660 is its “flex frame” design, which enhances the machine’s ability to traverse rough terrain, maintain
wheel contact and soften the ride of the operator.
With more and more hours spent applying
crop protection products, producers
should be looking at features that
improve operator comfort in their sprayers.
Improving operator comfort was a
significant goal in the recent SpraCoupe
7660 enhancements.
And, those significant changes have
helped the 700-gallon sprayer gain numerous
industry awards for innovation.
“It’s an evolution to a bigger machine,”
says Joel Krause, SpraCoupe
sales engineer for AGCO. “Farming
practices have changed and farms have
gotten larger.”
And, while improving operator comfort
and reducing fatigue are always important,
they’ll be essential factors in the
upcoming spring, as tighter application
windows could add significant hours in
the sprayer.
“Operators are spending up to 16
hours per day in these machines, and
they are almost becoming second
homes,” Krause says. “We updated the
suspension to soften the ride, improve
operator comfort and lengthen the life
of the machine.”
For applicators that are looking for
a more comfortable ride, the Spra-
Coupe offers that and more. The design
of the 7660 incorporates an improved
front and rear suspension, new
joystick controls, an extendable axle
and a Tier III engine.
Updates include:
New, more flexible suspension that
is designed to reduce the left-right roll
of the machine. The new “flex frame”
design enhances the machine’s ability
to traverse rough terrain, maintain
wheel contact and soften the ride of
the operator.
Quieter cab using sound-absorbing
materials and the new Tier III Perkins
diesel engines have reduced noise levels
by 4.2 decibels.
Flotation tires lighten the footprint
on early, damp field conditions and help
widen the spraying window.
New boom suspension smoothes
boom ride and delivers improved application
accuracy and consistency.
The 7660 SpraCoupe also carries
on the brand’s 40 year tradition as a
light-footed, maneuverable sprayer
that can get into a field faster than
almost any other machine on the
market. This makes Spra-Coupe the
sprayer of choice for many producers
for timely, accurate application of
crop protection products. -
WASHINGTON (AP) – The Senate completed a
five-year, half-trillion-dollar farm bill that cuts farm
subsidies and land conservation spending by about
$2 billion a year but largely protects sugar growers.
The vote was 65-34. The measure now goes to the
Republican-led House where conservatives are certain
to resist its costs.
Eighty percent of the farm bill supports a program
of food subsidies that benefit some 46 million poor
and low income families.
Farm subsidies often become a stumbling block in
international trade negotiations. Developing countries
say the subsidies drive down prices reducing the income
they derive when these nations sell their products.
While transforming the subsidy system, the Senate
left intact the sugar program that for some 80 years
has protected beet and sugarcane growers and sugar
refiners by controlling prices and limiting imports.
The program is opposed by consumer groups and
food and beverage companies that use sugar. They
say it drives up costs and leads to confectioners relocating
overseas. Amendments to either phase out
or narrow the scope of the sugar program both failed
on close votes.
While overall spending on programs covered by the
bill has climbed because more people are receiving
help buying food, the committee head, Sen. Debbie
Stabenow, a Democrat, and the top Republican, Sen.
Pat Roberts, said the bill would save $23 billion over
the next 10 years compared with spending under the
current farm bill that expires in September.
That comes from replacing four farm commodity
subsidy programs with one, consolidating 23
conservation programs into 13. The biggest change
comes from eliminating direct payments to farmers
whether they plant crops or not. The program,
which costs about $5 billion a year, has lost much of
its support at a time of $1 trillion federal deficits and
when farmers in general are prospering.
The bill also prevents farm “managers,” often
wealthy people who may not live or work on a farm,
from receiving subsidy payments and gives greater
help to fruit and vegetable producers and healthy food
programs. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack praised
the Senate bill for making progress toward “providing
a reformed safety net for producers in times of needs,”
supporting agriculture research, conserving natural
resources, strengthening local food systems and promoting
jobs. He expressed hope the House “will produce
a bill with those same goals in mind.”
Rep. Frank Lucas, the Republican chairman of the
House Agriculture Committee, said that while there
will be differences between the House and Senate approaches,
“I hope my colleagues are encouraged by
this success.” His committee is scheduled to meet on
July 11 to vote on a House version of the bill. -
e-Kay enterprises Ltd.
George Ekman started making
many different things for the farm
when he and his wife, Joan were
farming. They farmed for many
years in the Coronation district and
then moved to the Killam district in
Alberta. The Ekmans’ had two grain
augers and two 3 ton trucks at the
time, so at harvest time when one was
on the road home to be unloaded the
other one was being filled.
Joan hauled the grain while George
ran the combine. However, when the
two bins were full George would have
to shut the combine down, go home
and move the augers. The solution
was to make the augers self-propelled
so Joan could move them.
Necessity is the mother of invention
and so the E-Kay Mover came into existence.
The thought was, if the Ekmans’
needed a self-propelled auger,
so would every other farmer. In the
fall of 1984 the self-propelled auger
went to the first trade show in Red
Deer, Alberta. It was the laughing
stock of the show. Who in the world
would need a self-propelled auger?
The fall of 1986 was wet and all
the grain was taken off tough or
damp. Ekman had a grain dryer
and he dried grain all winter for his
neighbors. Nobody had a bin sweep,
so again necessity was the mother of
invention and the E-Kay Bin Sweep
was invented.
By the next summer George had
built six sweeps and they all sold. The
thought was, if the neighbors would
buy them, then the world would. So a
young farm boy was hired and sweeps
were built all winter and sold. The
summer of 1987 the Ekmans’ went to
the Western Farm Progress Show in
Regina and sold eight auger movers
and ten bin sweeps.
The farming business in the 80’s
was not good and E-Kay Manufacturing
did not make enough to survive, so
the farm land was turned back to farm
credit, the machinery was sold, bills
paid, and the Ekmans’ moved to town.
They rented a small shop and house
and went to work. It wasn’t long before
E-Kay was a profitable business.
Things went well until September
17, 1999 at 2:15 a.m. when a fire
broke out in the shop and it burned to
the ground. The Pastor was there and
he asked George, “what will you do
now?” Ekman replied, “the Lord giveth
and the Lord taketh away, blessed
be the Name of the Lord. We will
carry on.”
George and Joan rented a shop out
Midwest Bio-Tech, Inc.
enzyme increases Livestock Profits Without toxins
Last year, Midwest Bio-Tech, Inc. of Erie,
Illinois, began its fourth decade of providing
non-toxic enzyme products for agriculture,
including the complete line of Chandler Livestock
Products. The main livestock product
is Biobase Rumen, which is an enzyme-based
feed additive that multiplies the beneficial
digestive microorganisms in the rumen. The
product works to increase feed digestion and
nutrient absorption, which helps to reduce
feeding costs and to improve the daily rate of
gain in beef cattle and other ruminant meat
animals. The treated animals tend to exhibit
fewer health problems and are less susceptible
to stress while on the feed, and the market-ready
animals will have more lean muscle
with a higher dressing percentage. Biobase
Rumen may also be fed to dairy cattle, and the
product helps to increase milk daily production,
improve protein and butterfat content,
and reduce sematic cell counts. The product
may be mixed with farm-raised or commercial
feeds, and the recommended feeding rate is 3
to 4 cc’s (0.10 to 0.13 ounces) per head per
day for animals over 400 pounds. The dosage
rate is slightly lower for smaller animals
like sheep and goats or for newborn cattle and
calves. Biobase Rumen does not contain any
drugs or live biological cultures and the ingredients
are non-toxic and natural, so a withdrawal
period is not required after use.
Chandler also manufactures Biocat 3000,
which is a liquid enzyme treatment for manure
pits and lagoons. The product multiplies the
bacteria and other microbes that break down
manure solids so that more of the waste sediment
that accumulates in pits or lagoons may
be pumped as a liquid. Over time, Biocat
3000 will help to break down and liquify all
manure solids, which allows you to utilize the
full capacity of the pit or lagoon. The speed
of product performance depends on the initial
level of microbial life in the manure system,
but a significant impact is typically observed
within a few weeks after the first treatment.
For example, in one of the first product trials
on a dairy farm, the amount of remaining solids
in a million-gallon manure pit was cut in
half (from 30 inches to 15 inches) in just 21
weeks. Biocat 3000 also helps to reduce manure
odor by decreasing ammonia emissions,
and the observed decline has exceeded 60
percent in some cases. Finally, Biocat 3000
makes more of the manure nutrients available
for crops when applied to farmland. In one
test, the nitrogen (nitrate) content of dairy
manure increased by 80 percent in the first
month after the initial treatment.
Biocat 3000 should be applied to the remaining
manure solids after each time the
pit or lagoon is pumped. The recommended
application rate is one gallon for each 10,000
gallons of non-liquid manure or solid waste
sediment that cannot be pumped, and each gallon
should be diluted with at least 10 gallons
of water. To calculate the capacity of a storage
tank in gallons, we can compute the number of
cubic feet in the storage system and multiply
by 7.5 gallons of manure per cubic foot. For
example, a circular manure storage tank with
a 60-foot diameter will have about 20,000 gallons
per foot of depth. If there are two feet
of manure solids in the tank, the initial treatment
requires about 4 gallons of Biocat 3000
diluted in 40 gallons of water.
Midwest Bio-Tech, Inc., was founded
by James and Carole Miller in 1981, and
the company is still operated by James and
Ubly direct Bean Harvesting
Bean growers using direct harvesting
of dry edible beans with the sickle cutting
header are losing about 11 percent of their
beans. Some of them are the riper and larger
beans. Taking the Michigan harvested
yield of 22 bags (the actual yield was 24
bags) and at $49 per hundredweight, that
equals $120 lost per acre.
North Dakota bean acreage in 2011 was
410,000 with an average bean seed loss
of 11%. They lost $28,728,700 worth of
beans in the ground plus the overhead cost
which are all bottom line profit losses.
The Ubly direct harvesting of dry edible
bean concept has been designed, invented
and patented by John J. Misico of Ubly,
Michigan. This method eliminates all bean
seed losses caused by the direct harvest
sickle cutter header now used because the
sickle cutter bar is eliminated.
The Ubly hard-faced, self sharpening
bean knives are bolted to the patented
mount which is bolted to the header. The
knives sever the bean plant stalk one to two
inches underground and 12 inches ahead of
the header, thus taking less than 1/2 second
for the bean plants to be laid on the header
and augured to the combine.
There is no need for a $10,000 wind reel.
The existing reel will perform sufficiently.
The wind reel air can split open dryer pods
causing earlier harvest termination.
There is no need to purchase a $25,000
header, since the existing grain or soybean
header can have the Ubly system attached
to the grain header. With the Ubly system
the bottom of the header is raised about
three inches above ground level. There is
no need to roll the stones into the ground.
Rolling restricts cultivation to control
weeds, needing more chemicals and the
packed soil causes rain run off. Cultivated
loose soil absorbs more rain and insulates
root areas from excessive heat. All these
benefits increase yields and aids in bean
knife undercutting with its hilled soil.
Bush type beans out yield upright beans
which are being developed to reduce seed
losses with the direct harvest sickle cutter
header. Bush beans give more shade to retard
weed sprouting and growth, and reduces
moisture evaporation. Most bean growers on
seeing the Ubly Direct Bean Harvest display
at the Michigan Bean Day in Saginaw said
they would convert to it after it was tested.
I plan to have some bean growers from
the Michigan Thumb area help test the Ubly
System during this bean harvest season, in
their field with their equipment. I will furnish
all of the Ubly direct harvest material
needed and, if necessary, some finances.
revolutionize bean harvesting and increase
profits or for more information, please
sea Minerals fA
Sea Minerals FA works as a soil
fertility supplement that re-mineralizes
the soil. It comes from processing
very clean sea water and
contains 85 or more minerals and
trace minerals in the same proportions
that those same minerals occur
in the blood of healthy animals.
In addition to the positive impact
sea minerals have on the
since 1975. The TSR Straw chopper
developed in the late 90’s from a
need for service parts for older John
available through their local JD dealers.
TSR takes great pride in their
spray on green plants. Not only
is it a cheaper method, but Sea
Minerals FA has a lasting positive
effect on the microbes in the soil.
Sea Mineral nutrients stay in the
soil from year to year and build
and enhance the soil.
Sea Minerals FA can be used
without any other fertilizer with
good results. It can also be mixed
with other ingredients, such as weed
killers or fertilizer in the sprayer.
Sea Minerals FA also makes
great free-choice mineral for cattle.
Cows will consume one pound per
month on average. They will not
require any other mineral or salt
einke Manufacturing Launches reinke design Pro, Version ii
Deshler, NE - Reinke ® Manufacturing,
Inc., a leading manufacturer of mechanized
irrigation systems, announces the release
of Reinke Design Pro, Version II. Reinke
worked closely with Ag Connections, Inc.,
a Kentucky-based crop management software
design company, to develop this new
version of proposal software. The program
features a custom design to incorporate
Reinke products, and will allow Reinke
dealers to geo-target a grower’s property
where they are interested in installing an
irrigation system and develop customized
field options.
“We are excited to release the new Reinke
Design Pro, Version II software to our
dealer network,” said Cody Bailey, sales
and marketing support specialist, Reinke
Manufacturing. “Growers can now actually
visualize their field and see how our Reinke
products will work to optimize their yield
and maximize water coverage. It’s a great
tool for our dealers to have available.”
“Reinke Design Pro Version II was a
challenging project,” said Andrés Ferreyra,
Ph.D., manager of special projects for Ag
Connections. “Making the software solve
the necessary math fast enough for a pleasant
user experience was very difficult. I
think Reinke dealers have a unique tool as a
result of our collective efforts, and it’s built
on a state-of-the art software platform that
will provide many years of service.”
Reinke Design Pro, Version II is currently
the only software of its kind available
on the market. Its complex math-
ematical algorithms work with USDA
high-resolution georeferenced aerial images
to place pivots and accessories on top
of the exact piece of land that a grower is
considering for an irrigation system.
With the help of the program, growers
can see the precise location and how a
Reinke center pivot, lateral move, swing
arm corner, drop span or wrap span would
perform on their property. The software is
able to show the preciseness of such Reinke
equipment within an inch. Reinke dealers
are then able to create a customized report
for the grower showing what options are
best for their field.
“Reinke Design Pro, Version II is going
to help growers make the right decision
about what Reinke product will work
in their field and increase their overall returns,”
said Bailey. “The program, coupled
with our dealers’ knowledge, will ensure
the grower gets the best fit for that field.”
Additionally with this new program, the
Reinke dealer is able to go out to the field with
a handheld GPS system and turn the detailed
report into a survey ready project. “Reinke
Design Pro Version II is not only a proposal
software program; when it’s coupled with the
GPS survey, we are able to get the survey
done and that pivot on the ground in the right
place at the right time,” added Bailey.
To learn more about Reinke Design Pro,
Version II, visit your local Reinke dealer.
High fuel Mileage engines Along With A great running engine!
by Bruce Mallinson
Freightliner Coronados with the DD5 515
hp. engine have very restrictive mufflers under
the cab. This muffler has the exhaust coming
in the front and out the front sides of the muffler
to the dual stacks on the side of the cab.
Now if your Coronado has a single stack up
the back of the bunk, then this is a totally different
muffler. Back to the Coronado with the
stacks up the sides: If you stood this muffler
on end, it would look like a human body with
the head and arms and legs cut off, so we call
this the “Little Man Muffler”. This was designed
by Pete Sharp, our vice-president, and
we are seeing 1/2-3/4 mpg improvement just
by changing to this Little Man Muffler. Ed
Hess, out of Idaho and one of the participants
at the owner-operator snowmobile conference,
just installed one on his Coronado and loved
the performance and fuel mileage gain, which
is right in there at 3/4 mpg. When we are
working on a truck to improve the fuel mileage
and performance, we always start with the
muffler. Stock mufflers are ultra quiet and
extremely high on back pressure (restrictive),
which robs the engine of fuel mileage and
produces extra soot in the engine because it
can’t get out of the muffler. Our “Little Man”
will also keep your oil cleaner by reducing
the back pressure in the exhaust system. An
increase in the engine’s performance is also a
likely result of the change in the muffler.
Big Cam Cummins: Even though these engines
are old, they’re what we learned on, so we
still keep most of the parts in stock. So if you
are in need of Big Cam Cummins parts, give us
a call: We just might have the part you are looking
for. Because of the computer age, if a part
doesn’t sell every month, most truck dealers, engine
dealers, and parts stores will not keep that
part in inventory. We are a little old fashioned,
even old school, and like to have what others
don’t. And we appreciate your business!
Lucas Oil is at it again, meaning they are
developing a lot of new products that do exactly
what they say they will do. I just purchased
their Octane Booster which is NOT STREET
LEGAL, so it must be good, and according
to Forrest will raise the 93 octane fuel to 96.3
octane. I have a 2009 Harley with the 110 cu.
in. engine and it pings while pulling a hill, so
I installed the Lucas Octane Booster and yes
the ping is gone! Forrest also told me he now
has Hot Rod Oil, so I asked him what makes
an oil Hot Rod Oil. Forrest says: “Zinc was
removed out of today’s oil because of catalytic
converters, and it was the zinc that lubricates
the metal-to-metal surfaces such as flat tappet
cam and lifters.” Interesting: I remember
when the zinc was removed and there were a
lot of camshaft failures. So I called two old
friends of mine from my racecar days, Chuck
Dinunzio of B & R Speed in Verona, PA and
Rich Mercaldi, who is a Nascar engine builder
and they agreed that when a flat tappet cam is
installed in a gasoline engine, it’s coated with
zinc phosphate additive to aid in the breaking
in of the cam and lifter. So, if you have an
older gasoline engine with a flat tappet camshaft,
you need to use an oil with zinc such as
Lucas Hot Rod Oil.
Scheduling work to be performed at our shop
in Saxonburg, PA: We are scheduling large jobs
for the month of January, so we are booked for
6 months. However, Pete Sharp, our vice-president
calls everyone on Wednesday the week before
to remind you of the work you are to have
done. Many times we get one or two cancellations
a week because the schedule is so full.
Now we DO realize that many of you can’t wait
6 months to get your truck worked on, but if you
call us on Thursday or Friday and ask if we have
any cancellations for next week, chances are we
will be able to get you into our shop. We are
currently in the process of adding 10,000 square
feet of garage and engineering space to our existing
building. It will be ready in late August.
By doubling our shop space, we hope to be able
to shorten the waiting list.
“Pedal-Mashing”: I have noticed that some
owner-operators just push the throttle to the
floor starting out and after every shift and
even up-shift at 1300 and 1400 RPM, grabbing
a full gear and mashing the throttle at 900
RPM, expecting the ECM to take care of their
reckless driving habits. Now, these usually
happen to be people who’ve NEVER driven a
performance mechanical diesel engine. Here
is the problem: When you have us re-program
your ECM to make it responsive and pull,
well it will OF COURSE put out some smoke
when you mash it to the floor at low RPMs. It
takes fuel to make response and you need to
just ease onto the throttle. It’s the old theory
of driving like you have an egg between your
foot and the throttle. -
Ambraco
Announces new tamatec+ tM feature to John
deere Brand net Wrap - Hi-UV Protection
By Mike Bieber,
Marketing Director
AMBRACO is pleased to introduce
the new TamaTec+ TM feature
to John Deere brand Net Wrap.
This new feature will be available
in Edge to Edge and CoverEdge
John Deere net wrap.
TamaTec+ TM is a combination of
innovations in the formula of the
basic polymer group and the manufacturing
process of the net. These
two advancements combined allow
more feet of net to be wound onto
the roll without adding weight or
changing the physical dimensions
of the roll. The end result is more
time baling and less time loading
wrap into the baler.
AMBRACO introduced the XXL
version of John Deere Edge to Edge
and John Deere CoverEdge three
years ago. The longer length rolls
has proven to be the “choice” of
the end user because a lower cost
per bale is realized.
For the 2012 use season the following
sizes will be available:
TamaTec+ TM
67 Inch JD CoverEdge 9,000 Feet
51 Inch JD CoverEdge 12,100 Feet
64 Inch JD Edge to Edge 9,700 Feet
48 Inch JD Edge to Edge 12,000 Feet
XXL
67 Inch JD CoverEdge 7,800 Feet
51 Inch JD CoverEdge 11,000 Feet
64 Inch JD Edge to Edge 8,800 Feet
48 Inch JD Edge to Edge 13,200 Feet
The new TamaTec+ TM feature is
easily distinguished by the solid wide
green stripe on the right hand end of
the roll. This new Zebra stripe pattern
on the roll has been altered to make
it easier to identify which direction
the bale was rolled to make unrolling
easier when feeding. Of course, the
wide stripe is always installed with
the wide stripe to the right hand side
of the baler in the direction of travel.
This helps the operator make sure
that when handling the roll that the
roll is positioned properly for installation
into the baler.
Additional improvements to the
“handle system” make it easier to
remove the handles without using a
knife. A simple “twist” of the end of
the handle strip unlocks the handle.
When buying net ALWAYS check
the length of the roll to make sure
that a comparative purchase is being
made. As usual, at the end of
the day it is not about the price of
the roll but how many feet are on
the roll and how many bales can be
made with one roll.
20 years Of Making your Medication go farther
Twenty years ago we developed the
Medi-Dart to treat our own pasture
cattle. We had sick and sore animals
in pastures with no corrals. We were
encouraged to produce the Medi-Dart
commercially to help local cattlemen
with the same problem. Here we are
20 years later still producing, marketing
and distributing Medi-Darts with
just the two inventors and one long
time employee. We still use the darts
on our farm and still ask the neighbors
and our customers for input on
changes we have made to the product.
We listen to our clients and count
on their feedback. Satisfying our
customers continues to be number 1.
When you phone Medi-Dart you can
count on fast, friendly service and the
best advice twenty years of darting
cattle can offer.
The COMPLETELY REUSABLE
Medi-Dart syringe gives an intramuscular
or subcutaneous injection using
air pressure, provided by a simple air
pump. There is no cost per shot. The
injection, up to 30 cc, is completed in
a few seconds (approx. 10cc per sec).
As the plunger finishes the injection
it pushes out an ejector loop, around
the needle, releasing the syringe from
the animal. The syringe falls to the
ground, that animal has been medicated.
Sound easy? It is.
Medi-Dart offers three styles suitable
for any operation. The Extension
Medi-Dart gives the producer a 6 foot
or the NEW 10 foot reach. The Bow
The best of
iT’s The PiTTs
by lee Pitts
On the first day of my nephew’s annual
summer visit I decked him out in
his jeans and boots, and put him up on
my horse, Gentleman. We had to bring
in a cow to send to the auction. “What
do you want for your birthday?” I
asked as we road along. “Do you want
money or a toy?”
“I want a stuffed animal,” replied
Scott. “Wouldn’t you really rather
have some money?”
Scott replied, “Old people sleep with
money, kids sleep with teddy bears.”
Did I mention that Scott is a pretty
bright child?
Against the wishes of his parents,
I am trying to make a cowboy out of
Scott. I asked, “What do you want to
be when you grow up?” “I want to be
twelve,” answered Scott.
Kids worry a lot about how old they
are. In that respect they are like women,
always fudging when asked about their
age. Kids exaggerate on the upside and
women on the downside. Ask a three
year old how old he is and he will hold
up four fingers. Ask a woman how old
she is and she’ll hold up five fingers,
and then slap you with them.
As we struggled up a steep hill Scott
asked how old Gentleman was.
“He’s eleven,” I replied.
“Will I have to work this hard when
I am eleven?”
“You will if you don’t have any
money.”
After much effort we finally got
the cow in the chute. I opened her
mouth and explained. “This cow is
very old. She’s about ten years old.
In Dog Years
She is losing her teeth and will not be
able to eat.”
Scott got a scared look on his face,
wiggled one of his loose baby teeth
and asked, “Will I be able to eat when
I am ten?”
“Only if you have money,” I replied.
Scott was deep in thought. “How
old is Studly the ram?”
“Studly is 8 years old.”
“Will I have thirty girl friends like
he has when I am eight?”
“You will if you have money,” I answered,
trying to drive home my point.
“Uncle Lee,” said Scott, “maybe
you just better give me money for my
birthday. I’m not getting any younger,
you know.”
“Seven isn’t all that old Scott. It is
different with animals,” I tried to explain.
“A cow at ten years is the same
as a human at seventy. A dog at two is
really fourteen. A dog only lives one
seventh as long as a human so you have
to multiply their age by seven. You have
Farm & Ranch News www.fandrn.com
July / August 2012 (98)
to convert everything to dog years.”
“How old is Aussie, the dog, then?”
“She’s only 5.”
“I didn’t think a dog could get that
stupid in just 5 years,” said my observant
nephew. Then he dropped the
bombshell I never saw coming. “How
old is my mother?” he asked.
Now it was time for a much more
thorough, well thought out and delicate
explanation. I stumbled and
stuttered and said, “Scott, it’s a well
known fact, if not a biological one,
that girls age slower than men. A
woman, you see, never lives past the
age of 39. But when she is 39 she
could actually be the same age as a
man might be at 60.”
Scott digested all of this information,
got a pensive look on his face and
then deduced, “With women it’s sort
of like dog years.”
Did I mention how smart my nephew
is?
global seed Company, University Of idaho
Agree On novel Wheat Pact
IDAHO FALLS, ID – The Idaho State
Board of Education on June 22 approved
an innovative agreement between the
University of Idaho and Limagrain Cereal
Seeds, one of the world’s largest
seed companies, that expands graduate
education in agriculture and wheat variety
development opportunities.
“This agreement is important to meet
the needs of Idaho’s wheat growers and
our ability to serve agriculture both in
Idaho and in the Northwest,” said College
of Agricultural and Life Sciences
Dean John Hammel
“We have had detailed discussions for
more than a year with the Idaho Wheat
Commission, Limagrain Cereal Seeds
and others to make sure this agreement
works for all parties,” said Donn Thill,
Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station
director in the college at Moscow.
Limagrain Cereal Seeds will contribute
to research and education endowments
for the College of Agricultural
and Life Sciences to fund wheat-focused
research and two $20,000 graduate-level
assistantships annually.
The research endowments will help
fund field studies by college faculty
members focused on better ways to
grow wheat on the Palouse surrounding
Moscow, Thill noted.
A July 9 field day at the college’s
Palouse Research, Extension and Education
Center Parker Farm east of Moscow
will offer wheat growers and the public
a chance to explore the collaboration at
the ground level with officials from the
university, company and other groups.
Hundreds of plots of Limagrain Cereal
Seeds wheat varieties and breeding lines
and those developed by the college will
be on display.
“From the Limagrain Cereal Seeds
standpoint, we’re really excited about
the opportunity to partner with the University
of Idaho and by extension with
the Idaho Wheat commission,” said Jim
Peterson, vice president for research for
Limagrain Cereal Seeds at Fort Collins,
CO. “We feel we bring some unique
things to the table, a global germplasm
base, some modern technologies and
the opportunity to partner with the researchers
and extension at the University
of Idaho to really bring better
information and better products to the
growers of Idaho,” said Peterson.
He previously worked as Oregon
State University’s wheat breeder and
has strong ties to the University of Idaho,
where his uncle Chuck Peterson,
an agricultural engineer and biodiesel
pioneer served as College of Engineering
dean.
The Idaho Wheat Commission will
participate in the collaboration in a formal
advisory role. Cathy Wilson, the
commission’s director of research collaboration,
will serve as an ex-officio
member of a joint university-company
steering committee that will meet four
times a year.
“My experience shows that where
there is collaboration, there is opportu-
nity,” Wilson said.
On Jan. 6 in Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s
office, Peterson of Limagrain Cereal
Seeds joined an Idaho Wheat Commission
announcement of endowments
that will total $2 million to support the
university’s wheat research.
The agreement was previewed by
the State Board of Education during its
April meeting in Moscow.
The non-exclusive agreement between
the university and Limagrain
means the two will develop and market
some wheat varieties together under
the trade name Varsity Idaho. The
company and university will continue
to develop varieties independently, collaborate
with other parties and market
varieties separately.
The strength of the agreement, Thill
said, is that it provides the university
with a tie to the company’s vast collection
of germplasm from throughout
Europe and its scientific and marketing
expertise. -
Fast Hay Movers Inc.
Birth Of the Hay Baby
“That does it!” – Shouted my wife Betty
with a firm foot stomp. “We are getting
a round hay baler”. Why such a dramatic
declaration? Looking over our 10 acre
field dotted like the freckles I used to have
on my teenage face were 900 bales of hay
ready for manual pick-up and stacking in
our barn. No big deal if our kids had not
grown and “flew the coop”. But on this
hot June day it was just mom and dad!
Get the picture? Life is a book and
each chapter requires change and challenges.
Our kids were the garage door
openers... Now it’s done with a push of a
button. Washing dishes was a family happening...
Now an automatic dishwasher
does the job. It didn’t take long for dad to
acquire a husky riding lawn mower after
our teens took their flight!
By next hay season a N.H. 630 round
hay baler was sitting on our 50 acre
schiltz Manufacturing
Schiltz Manufacturing was established
in the mid-1980’s. This small manufacturing
company was born of a concept from
a farmer, Tom Schiltz, who was looking
for an easier way to unload grain from
his bins (after his three sons grew up and
moved away).
Today, Schiltz Manufacturing is located
in Northwest Iowa. Each Center
Unload System is custom-built to your
bin specifications.
If you have bins with concrete or aeration
floors, the Schiltz Center Unload
north central WV farm. Just as Betty
declared, with no IF’s or BUT’s. Of
course our M.F. Tractor did the job. But
that tractor sure made deep tire ruts in
our lovely meadow and pasture field.
One day I looked over at our ATV sitting
there idle. No Way! I prayed, “Dear
Lord, there has got to be a way to move
and feed round bales with this 4-wheeler
ATV. Please show me how”. My precious
Lord Jesus Christ heard this plea
and the concept of “Lateral oppositional
force” came to me.
With this concept and use of two steel
/ iron wheels salvaged from a scraped
hay sweep, scrap steel, chains and a stick
welder came our first “Hay Baby”. Boy,
was it in the rough. But it worked! Later
came the “Hay Mama” with a wider axle
and the “Hay Papa” for the big boys, up to
2,000 lb. bales.
system is your solution.
The Schiltz Push Blade
When the snow is heavy, you need a
real workhorse to keep your yard and
roads clear. Works on any tractor, payloader
or skidloader for moving rocks,
cleaning feed lots and leveling dirt.
• Attachments available for any style
loader
• 3/8” back plate and 1/2”sides plates
• Equipped with skid plates for depth
control
• Dual cutting edge
With years of research and development
our new deluxe modernized “Hay Baby”
was on the market. It quickly connects
/ disconnects to most ATV’s/UTV’s and
compact tractors. A 3-pt hitch system is
now possible for category #1 implements
by simply using our new conversion kit.
Now, no more tractor tire ruts with
freeze and thaw conditions. It saves fuel
and wear on our 50-year old tractor.
These machines can be used in summer,
winter or any time there’s a need to
transport round hay bales. Betty and I can
back into tight places because it will not
jack-knife like a trailer. A push of a button
on the handle bar raises or lowers the
bales. All this done while sitting on your
vehicle seat... Amazing!!!
diamond W Corrals
Diamond W Corrals introduces the
portable sorting and gathering system
by the original designer of the Wilson
Wheel Corral.
You will not believe the size of this
system! The ease of sorting your cattle
or horses in the field will amaze you! No
more gathering, loading, unloading, sorting
and then reloading. No more stressing
your herd to get them out of the pasture.
Thanks to Burlington Welding, LLC, home
of the Diamond W Corral, those days are
gone. One system, one move, and you’re
done and home in time for lunch.
This is a goose-neck unit that opens
for access in or out of the front. There
is a total 16 gates throughout the system.
On each end of the alley there are two
sets of 6’ gates that open between the
split goose-neck hitch and the rear axle
assembly. The rancher has four sorting
pens measuring 15’ 6” X 15’ 6” with a
height of all panels at 6’. This gives the
rancher the ability to tie into the sorting
system with any type of portable corral
or stock trailer in the field.
A hydraulic system sets the unit down
on the ground, and when ready to move,
lifts it up for transport. The hydraulic
system is operated by a 12-volt battery
charged with a solar panel and the ease
of pushing a button. All systems are assembled
with spring-loaded latches on the
interior gates for added convenience. A
10’ gate allows you to drive thru the alleyway
with a cake truck.
Birth Of A Sprayer
After carefully listening to customers who
were disappointed with the performance or
lack of features in ATV sprayers available,
C&R Supply set out to design a series of
sprayers to meet their needs.
“Instead of taking an off the shelf tank
and attaching features, we needed to get
all the input we could from customers and
ATV manufacturers,” said product manager
Dusty Miller.
“With a good vision of what features and
options were required, it became obvious that
a completely new tank design was needed.”
The EZ ATV Sprayer was designed with
the operator in mind for ease of operation
and functional ability and safety. The sleek
design brings the weight forward and more
to a center of gravity for better machine
balance. Allowing the legs of the tank to
wrap around the fenders of the ATV gives
the sprayer dual sumps to give maximum
drainage and the ability to run on side hills
without losing its prime. The pump, strainer,
and main shut-off are mounted underneath
the tank in a protected cavity, which also
serves as a dual slosh baffle. The top of the
tank is designed with a fill catch area to prevent
chemical from getting on the operator.
The EZ is fitted with a 4 gpm Shurflo Pump
and a quality Tee-Jet trigger style handgun
in the convenient control panel at your side.
All brackets and boomless nozzle or boom
accessories are attached to the tank for quick
and easy mounting. The EZ ATV Sprayer has
several different options and accessories to
meet your requirements and needs.
farm to table:
Protecting your Crops
Soybeans and corn are in high demand – and the need continues to grow.
(NAPS) – You may not think of farming
as a gamble, but farmers know all
about taking risks. Minimizing those
risks is essential to a farm’s survival, and
the growing need for some crops means
farmers must maximize their yields to
stay competitive.
Fortunately, a better understanding of
risk management can give farmers a greater
edge in the high-stakes, high-reward
world of modern agriculture.
Corn prices have recently seen record
highs, while demand for soybeans continues
to grow. The United Soybean Board points
out that global consumption of soybeans is
projected to increase by 70 to 80 million
tons annually during the next decade.
U.S. farmers are the world’s top producers
of corn and soybeans. As droughts
affect other soybean-producing countries
such as Brazil and Argentina, the challenge
facing growers in the U.S. is a familiar
one: How will they manage their
crops and maximize yields to take advantage
of international demand?
Multiyear research conducted by BASF
and university partners shows growers can
significantly improve production with the
right management plan. A comprehensive
pest management plan includes:
• Herbicides to control yieldrobbing
weeds;
• Fungicides to protect against diseases
that crops are susceptible to because of unpredictable
weather conditions;
• Insecticides to protect crops from damaging
insect pests.
According to the research, using a complete
pest management program in corn
led to an average 11.7 bushels per acre increase
over the common approach that involves
applying a mix containing a popular
herbicide, atrazine.
Researchers took this yield increase
and, based on the commodity prices for
the years when research was conducted,
calculated a revenue increase. Weighing
that against the cost of the comprehensive
pest management program, the return on
investment (ROI) was $2.70 for each $1
invested over the common approach.
In soybeans, the research found that a
complete pest management program led to
an average 6.8 bushels per acre increase over
a common approach that involves a simple
application of the herbicide glyphosate.
During one year of the soy bean studies,
researchers found an ROI as high as $3.47
for every $1 invested over the common approach
– well above farmers’ common goal
of $2 returned for every $1 invested.
Safejary – Heat Related Illness Prevention
Jary Winstead – Work Safety Services, LLC
We have discussed this subject before,
but it just can’t be over stated. It won’t
be long until summer’s heat has arrived,
and along with it, heat related illnesses.
Through the years I’ve seen workers of
all ages affected by heat related illnesses,
even an athlete in top condition can be
overcome by the heat of summer. It is
possible to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The important thing is to stay well-hydrated
to make sure that your body can
get rid of extra heat, and to be careful
about exertion in hot, humid weather.
Your body’s cooling system is much
like an automobile’s. When your vehicle’s
radiator is full, the coolant is circulating,
and air is passing through the
radiator to cool the coolant, you can run
the vehicle in hot weather without any
problems. Take any of those components
away, and your vehicle overheats.
Keeping your body’s cooling system
full during hot weather is essential in heat
related illness prevention. Your sweat is
your body’s main system for getting rid
of extra heat. When you sweat, and the
water evaporates from your skin, the heat
that evaporates the sweat comes mainly
from your skin. As long as blood is
flowing properly to your skin, extra heat
from the core of your body is “pumped”
to the skin and removed by sweat evaporation.
If you do not sweat enough, you
cannot get rid of extra heat well, and you
also can’t get rid of heat as well if blood
is not flowing to the skin. Dehydration
will make it harder for you to cool off
in two ways: if you are dehydrated you
won’t sweat as much, and your body will
try to keep blood away from the skin to
keep your blood pressure at the right level
in the core of your body. But, since
you lose water when you sweat, you must
make up that water to keep from becoming
dehydrated. If the air is humid, it’s
harder for your sweat to evaporate – this
means that your body cannot get rid of
extra heat as well when it’s muggy, as it
can when it’s relatively dry.
Drink plenty of water in the morning,
and all day long. Don’t wait until you’re
thirsty. If you wait until you’re thirsty,
you’ve waited too long. The best fluid
to drink when you are sweating is water.
There are numerous sports drinks on the
market containing electrolytes and vitamins,
and they certainly work well in hydrating
the human body. Be careful when
taking salt or other electrolyte tables, it
is possible to actually consume excessive
amounts and end up causing other medical
conditions to occur. It’s recommended
that you talk to your physician before
taking these tablets. There are many
reports out on this subject, and they all
seem to agree that water is the best thing
for keeping your body hydrated. Always
remember; beverages containing alcohol
and caffeine are not recommended as
hydration fluids, and will actually dehydrate
you even further.
It’s also important to be sensible about
how much you exert yourself in hot
weather. The hotter and more humid it
is, the harder it will be for your body to
maintain a safe temperature, and get rid
of the excess heat. The clothing you wear
makes a big difference. The lighter, more
breathable clothing is best during hot and
humid days. Like in winter conditions,
layering is best. It’s much easier to stay
comfortable when dressing in layers.
Let’s discuss the common heat re-
lated illnesses:
Heat cramps: Heat cramps are muscular
pains and spasms due to heavy exertion.
They usually involve the abdominal
muscles or the legs. It is generally thought
that the loss of water and salt from heavy
sweating causes the cramps.
Heat exhaustion: Heat exhaustion is
less dangerous than heat stroke. It typically
occurs when people exercise heavily
or work in a warm, humid place where
body fluids are lost through heavy sweating.
Fluid loss causes blood flow to decrease
in the vital organs, resulting in a
form of shock. With heat exhaustion,
sweat does not evaporate as it should,
possibly because of high humidity or
too many layers of clothing. As a result,
the body is not cooled properly. Signals
include cool, moist, pale or flushed
skin; heavy sweating; headache; nausea
or vomiting; dizziness; and exhaustion.
Body temperature may be slightly elevated
or near normal.
Heat stroke: Also known as sunstroke,
which is a life-threatening emergency.
The victim’s temperature control system,
which produces sweating to cool the body,
stops working. The body temperature can
rise so high that brain damage and death
may result if the body is not cooled quickly.
Signals include hot, red and dry skin;
changes in consciousness; rapid, weak
pulse; and rapid, shallow breathing. Body
temperature can be very high, sometimes
as high as 105 F.
The best way to help treat someone
with heat related illnesses is to get them
out of the heat and into a cool place. Even
the shade of a tree can be much cooler
than being in the sun. Give them cool
water, remove excess clothing, and allow
them to rest. Placing wet towels on them,
a fan, or even cool water bottles under the
arms and between the persons legs can
help in cooling them down. When someone
is suffering from a heat related illness,
be careful not to allow them to drink
too much, too fast, and never give anyone
food or drink, if they are semi-conscious,
this may cause them to vomit.
Heat exhaustion can develop into heat
stroke, if the person is not hydrated, and
allowed to cool and rest. Heat stroke is
a life threatening emergency. A person
suffering from heat stroke needs immediate
medical assistance, and you should
always call your local emergency EMS
number or 911, whichever applies. If
you’re not sure which heat related illness
a person is suffering from, call your local
EMS number, and get help on the way,
it’s always better to be safe, than sorry.
Experienced agricultural
representatives wanted
growing Healthier, Better Crops
Researchers have discovered how to protect both
phosphorus and nitrogen in soil for increased crop
yields and better crop perfor mance, as these early
corn roots show. The corn on the top was treated with
manure+MTM; the bottom was treated with manure only.
(NAPS) – Both farmers and consumers
may soon be able to enjoy
more abundant crops, thanks to a recent
scientific development.
Researchers have found a way to
protect both the phosphorus (P) and the
nitrogen (N) in manures used as fertilizers,
which can lead to yield increases
and better overall crop performance.
The Problem
Of the 15.8 million acres of U.S.
cropland fertilized with ma nure, varied
percentages of N and P are lost
during handling and storage as well as
after application, leaving both nutrients
un available for crops.
The Solution
The new product, called More
Than Manure ® Nutrient Manager, also
known as MTM, from SFP, reduces
P lock-up and N leaching, denitrification
and volatilization in all manures
and litters – both dry and liquid.
Additionally, when added to an inground
lagoon or pit, it can reduce solids
and ammonia levels in livestockconfinement
operations.
The Proof of Growth
Independent, third-party research
shows increased plant growth, root
development and yield when MTM is
used in manure-fertilizer applications.
“The cost of liquid N seems to continue
to increase, increase, increase,”
says Jonathan McClain, a Georgia
grower who’s adopted MTM on his
farm, “but [after] using MTM in conjunction
with boiler house litter that
we used, we saw better results and
darker foliage, and it was more equally
dispersed.”
Easy to Use and
Environmentally Safe
No special equipment is re quired
to effectively apply MTM, and it offers
crop-rotation flexibility so soybeans
or other crops can be planted
after application.
Additionally, research shows less
ammonia in barns with MTM pretreated
pits. “The ammonia level
reduction was immediate; you could
walk in a barn and really couldn’t
tell you were in a hog barn anymore.
Your eyes weren’t burning and the
odor was more or less gone instantly
as soon as you dumped it in,” says
Sam McKnight, a producer and custom
applicator in Iowa.
MTM is biodegradable, leaves no
environmental footprint and is nontoxic
to livestock and soil bacteria.
going green Can Put green in your Pocket!!
Watson Ranch Organic has been helping Farmers
and Ranchers like you save money for the past 15
years. We are a family owned business that strives to
manufacture superior Organic Products from premium
Organic Ingredients.
We start out with ingredients taken directly from
Mother Nature and turn them into the highest quality Fertilizers
and Soil Amendments.
Following Watson Ranch Organic Programs can also
reduce the cost, or eliminate the need for inputs such as
lime, herbicides and pesticides. The healthier your soil
the less weeds you have. One of the many benefits to
using organic products is fewer fire ants. The microbes
that thrive in natural soil attack the fire ant larvae. Organics
also deters army-worms.
Soil rich in the right nutrients and minerals can help
your crops become more resistant to severe droughts and
freezes. This means longer growing seasons for your
crops and more return on your investment.
The line of Watson Ranch products are manufactured
with the goal of putting micro-organisms back into the
soil. This helps the plants take up the nutrition they need.
The microbiological life has a relationship with the plant
and they help to supply it with its needs and wants. Did
you know that by using Organic Products you can not
only have healthier crops and land but also livestock?
Think about how much
money you can save on
vet bills by having livestock
that are healthier
because of the forage
they are eating.
