The best of iT’s The PiTTs by lee Pitts On the first day of my nephew’s annual summer visit I decked him out in his jeans and boots, and put him up on my horse, Gentleman. We had to bring in a cow to send to the auction. “What do you want for your birthday?” I asked as we road along. “Do you want money or a toy?” “I want a stuffed animal,” replied Scott. “Wouldn’t you really rather have some money?” Scott replied, “Old people sleep with money, kids sleep with teddy bears.” Did I mention that Scott is a pretty bright child? Against the wishes of his parents, I am trying to make a cowboy out of Scott. I asked, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” “I want to be twelve,” answered Scott. Kids worry a lot about how old they are. In that respect they are like women, always fudging when asked about their age. Kids exaggerate on the upside and women on the downside. Ask a three year old how old he is and he will hold up four fingers. Ask a woman how old she is and she’ll hold up five fingers, and then slap you with them. As we struggled up a steep hill Scott asked how old Gentleman was. “He’s eleven,” I replied. “Will I have to work this hard when I am eleven?” “You will if you don’t have any money.” After much effort we finally got the cow in the chute. I opened her mouth and explained. “This cow is very old. She’s about ten years old. In Dog Years She is losing her teeth and will not be able to eat.” Scott got a scared look on his face, wiggled one of his loose baby teeth and asked, “Will I be able to eat when I am ten?” “Only if you have money,” I replied. Scott was deep in thought. “How old is Studly the ram?” “Studly is 8 years old.” “Will I have thirty girl friends like he has when I am eight?” “You will if you have money,” I answered, trying to drive home my point. “Uncle Lee,” said Scott, “maybe you just better give me money for my birthday. I’m not getting any younger, you know.” “Seven isn’t all that old Scott. It is different with animals,” I tried to explain. “A cow at ten years is the same as a human at seventy. A dog at two is really fourteen. A dog only lives one seventh as long as a human so you have to multiply their age by seven. Then he dropped the bombshell I never saw coming. “How old is my mother?” he asked. Now it was time for a much more thorough, well thought out and delicate explanation. I stumbled and stuttered and said, “Scott, it’s a well known fact, if not a biological one, that girls age slower than men. A woman, you see, never lives past the age of 39. But when she is 39 she could actually be the same age as a man might be at 60.” Scott digested all of this information, got a pensive look on his face and then deduced, “With women it’s sort of like dog years.” Did I mention how smart my nephew is? www.LeePittsbooks.com - global seed Company, University Of idaho Agree On novel Wheat Pact IDAHO FALLS, ID – The Idaho State Board of Education on June 22 approved an innovative agreement between the University of Idaho and Limagrain Cereal Seeds, one of the world’s largest seed companies, that expands graduate education in agriculture and wheat variety development opportunities. “This agreement is important to meet the needs of Idaho’s wheat growers and our ability to serve agriculture both in Idaho and in the Northwest,” said College of Agricultural and Life Sciences Dean John Hammel “We have had detailed discussions for more than a year with the Idaho Wheat Commission, Limagrain Cereal Seeds and others to make sure this agreement works for all parties,” said Donn Thill, Idaho Agricultural Experiment Station director in the college at Moscow. Limagrain Cereal Seeds will contribute to research and education endowments for the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences to fund wheat-focused research and two $20,000 graduate-level assistantships annually. The research endowments will help fund field studies by college faculty members focused on better ways to grow wheat on the Palouse surrounding Moscow, Thill noted. A July 9 field day at the college’s Palouse Research, Extension and Education Center Parker Farm east of Moscow will offer wheat growers and the public a chance to explore the collaboration at the ground level with officials from the university, company and other groups. Hundreds of plots of Limagrain Cereal Seeds wheat varieties and breeding lines and those developed by the college will be on display. “From the Limagrain Cereal Seeds standpoint, we’re really excited about the opportunity to partner with the University of Idaho and by extension with the Idaho Wheat commission,” said Jim Peterson, vice president for research for Limagrain Cereal Seeds at Fort Collins, CO. “We feel we bring some unique things to the table, a global germplasm base, some modern technologies and the opportunity to partner with the researchers and extension at the University of Idaho to really bring better information and better products to the growers of Idaho,” said Peterson. He previously worked as Oregon State University’s wheat breeder and has strong ties to the University of Idaho, where his uncle Chuck Peterson, an agricultural engineer and biodiesel pioneer served as College of Engineering dean. The Idaho Wheat Commission will participate in the collaboration in a formal advisory role. Cathy Wilson, the commission’s director of research collaboration, will serve as an ex-officio member of a joint university-company steering committee that will meet four times a year. “My experience shows that where there is collaboration, there is opportunity,” Wilson said. On Jan. 6 in Gov. C.L. “Butch” Otter’s office, Peterson of Limagrain Cereal Seeds joined an Idaho Wheat Commission announcement of endowments that will total $2 million to support the university’s wheat research. The agreement was previewed by the State Board of Education during its April meeting in Moscow. The non-exclusive agreement between the university and Limagrain means the two will develop and market some wheat varieties together under the trade name Varsity Idaho. The company and university will continue to develop varieties independently, collaborate with other parties and market varieties separately. The strength of the agreement, Thill said, is that it provides the university with a tie to the company’s vast collection of germplasm from throughout Europe and its scientific and marketing expertise. - Page 27
