Tennis is inherentlycompetitive, but what about the others?Yes, from about age 6 to 13 I was atswim meets almost every weekend. But then the other kids got biggerand I didn’t grow so much, so I didn’tdo so well and got more into running.I ran cross-country in middle schooland high school, and a little in collegetoo. But I really liked riding my bike. Soafter graduation a friend and I decidedto ride across the country. For me, it was too much fun tothink about what I wanted to do withmy life. And so at the end it seemed anticlimacticto just fly home, so insteadI took a greyhound bus to visit myone friend in New York. I arrived inPort Authority, assembled my bikeand trailer and went met my friend.I eventually got an apartment withthat friend, worked a shitty job forfour months and also got up thenerve to commute by bike after gettingtired of the subway.I was scared of cabs and still adorky-looking rider with reflectivevest, flag on the bike that had beenon my trailer. I had toconvince my parents, and part of thatwas telling them I’d use the time tothink about what I would do in lifeafter graduation. I’d been a biologymajor but wasn’t sure what I wantedto do after finishing. So I worked a lot that summer tosave money and got a real touringToga Bikes – and it hit me: “Since Ilove riding so much I should workhere!”Luckily the timing was right and Igot a job there.I hadn’t ridden outside the city, and was anxious to explore, so I keptpestering the guys at the shop to takeme on their rides, including to thismysterious mecca called “BearMountain.” And finally they did – IB Field1. We’d just ride up and askto stay the night.People were very hospitable andopen to these two girls with a peculiarmethod of travel. We saw a lotand met a lot of people.
