<strong>and</strong> Youth Engagement. Meetings were held at Fall CreekAcademy charter school <strong>and</strong> upwards to 100 communitystakeholders attended each <strong>of</strong> the nine meetings.Working <strong>of</strong>f <strong>of</strong> a results based accountability model,participants started with the results <strong>and</strong> then workedtheir way backwards to the specific action steps to createthe plan. The meetings also included ongoing outreachto organizational partners in the community that wouldbe accountable for taking the lead in making the differentaction steps happen. In addition to the Action Teammeetings, $15,000 was made available from the LocalInitiatives Support Corporation to promote “Early Action”community projects that would be completed while theplanning process was still underway. The grants had tomeet criteria such as:which boasts many graduates in the Mid-North area, isalso registered as a national l<strong>and</strong>mark. On the day <strong>of</strong> theSummit, more than 300 residents <strong>and</strong> other stakeholderskicked <strong>of</strong>f activities in the Caleb Mills auditorium at theschool. Attendees were entertained by local dancers, givensome background on the quality <strong>of</strong> life plan effort <strong>and</strong> thenmoved to the school cafeteria to begin their work. Using theoriginal interviews completed by area stakeholders as thebackdrop, participants were able to brainstorm in smallgroups to come up with several priority areas upon whichthe community should focus. The morning activities werefollowed by lunch as members <strong>of</strong> the collaboration teambelieved “breaking bread” with neighbors was one <strong>of</strong>the best ways to bring people to the table. All the food wasdonated in-kind <strong>and</strong> contact information was collectedto further engage residents in the process. Just like theinterviews, the Summit was the kick start to the next leg <strong>of</strong>the planning process.The Action TeamsThe ideas from the Summit were transformed into ActionTeams. These Action Teams, comprised <strong>of</strong> stakeholders inthe community, met over the summer <strong>of</strong> 2011 to come upwith their part <strong>of</strong> the plan. The Action Teams were formedaround six areas: Aesthetics, Business Development,Crime <strong>and</strong> Safety, Education, Housing, Senior Advocacy,• Show visible results within three to six months;• Benefit residents <strong>of</strong> all six neighborhoods;• Promote stakeholder engagement;• Complement the purposes <strong>of</strong> the Mid-North Quality<strong>of</strong> Life Plan;Out <strong>of</strong> more than 20 grant proposals submitted, projectswere ultimately funded that completed a Mid-NorthInfrastructure Survey, allowed local entrepreneurs tostart up businesses, trained area youth in neighborhoodcanvassing <strong>and</strong> started an oral history project.The Next PhaseIn September <strong>of</strong> 2011, members <strong>of</strong> the Action Teams cametogether again to tie all the pieces <strong>of</strong> the plan together.Members also used group exercises to come up withthemes that represented their visions. These themes wouldultimately be used in the plan document. The later part<strong>of</strong> 2011 was used to solidify partners <strong>and</strong> a sustainabilitygroup was also created to work on the implementationphase <strong>of</strong> the plan. The Mid-North residents <strong>and</strong> otherstakeholders completed their plan in December 2011<strong>and</strong> celebrated with a Community Unveiling event at theChildren’s Museum <strong>of</strong> <strong>Indianapolis</strong> in January <strong>of</strong> 2012.Mid-North Quality <strong>of</strong> Life Plan9
